Opinions needed.

I'm designing an in game ad for the Scoop, and I'd like some feedback from this section.

These were my first few.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...oard_2_1_H.png

Result: I was told it needed to be made a single version because there was no way to target between CoH and CoV.

Version 3:
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...illboard_3.png

Result: I had some disagreement with the body copy with a couple of people on the staff.

Version 4:
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...illboard_4.png

Result: More visually appealing, fixed body copy. Generally favorable by Scoop staff, but someone said it was "too wordy" and needed more visual impact.

Version 5:

Opinions? Did anyone want to do do an Billboard for the Scoop?

I agree that versions 3 and 4 were too wordy, but version 5 isn't wordy enough (just to drive you extra insane!)

I think you need to get in there somewhere as to what the City Scoop is, or at least to go to the boards.

It's a shame you can't do like a whole advertising campaign type thing with differening ads here and there and in the future...

But that said those all look ok to me. I honestly haven't even -noticed- any ads so chances are, I won't see these in game either :-/

hmmm, as much as i like the shots of States and LR, i think that version 4 is the best. Not sure if it's too wordy, maybe, maybe not, but graphically it's rather appealing, and it comes off as an ad, the last one doesn't, just looks like a picture. for my money i would go 4 (but sense i have actually paid nothing, take this how you will ) maybe edit the text, say more with less.

Oh yeah, that was the time that girl got her whatchamacallit stuck in that guys dooblickitz and then what his name did that thing with the lizards and it cleared right up.

screw your joke, i want "FREEM"

Maybe a newspaper-ish background to show it as a "news" thing?

And a weblink to show people where to look for it, since not everyone who plays the game posts or reads the forums.

Or something

I like number 4, but I do think there are too many words for an ad. Maybe something like:

City Scoop
for supers, by supers (like you had)

Keep tabs on the game, the forums, and all things City of... Read The City Scoop!

I Like 5 but there's not enough info there. Maybe a blend of 3 and 5.

How about "The trusted source of City of information."

Find it on the Community Forums.

We'd love to have some great options to put in front of the dev team (from Community) for use in optional in-game advertisements. If anyone else out there reading has some ideas or images they would like to share, we'd love to hear and see them!

Do the images have to advertise something real?

Is there anyway for targeted advertising (like by server) or is it just a cross server cross faction advert?

Are there any time constraints we can add (for limited time events) or are they going to be put in and stay in?

Is there a link to a thread specifically for in game adverts with all the size, format, dementional and content restrictions?

I don't like "read it on the forums", because that's pretty much the definition of Breaking Immersion. I don't mind the idea of there being a newspaper about supers by supers (I'm sure there would be in a real superhero world), but read it on the forums shatters the fourth wall.

Hey - get back to the grill! I still want a couple more brats!!

Seriously, can these be made-up ads (i.e., advertising some made-up product or business)? Can we advertise for an in-game business or product? For a SG?

Optional in-game Ads are only limited by your real geographic location (as in the game doesn't serve North American optional ads to those outside North America or European optional ads to those outside of Europe). There is no current functionality to serve optional ads to only one server (or a specific server) or to just those playing Hero side or Villain side.

Is the team also looking at doing public service ads? Such as anti-drug use, etc.?

Missing persons ads? It won't be a money maker, but ads like the milk carton ads for children missing long term might be useful, and certainly fit with the heroes theme.

In game store fronts would cool too. An art gallery that you click on the door to visit inside, or a (national chain) food place that you pop inside to order food from, that then gets delivered to your home.

Setting up ad space in Pocket D would be cool too. There are a lot of special events held there, and I bet it would generate a lot of player interest and submissions. For example, to have pictures of bride/groom in the background of a virtual wedding.

I hate to say this, but in cases like this I would think "screw immersion". I mean the point of the ads is to increase awareness of a product and/or service. But awareness of said product and/or service does nothing if you do not know where to get it from. And in this case, you need to break in-game immersion to tell them. I know what you guys are getting at and understand, but there are times that you just have no other option and this is one of them.

That all said, I like the 6th one, 4th being my second choice, but I personally think that something should be added to note that a new one goes up every friday.

Either something like "Read it on the forums every Friday!" or "Read it on the forums! New edition released every Friday!"

Well, back to the subject of the City Scoop ads- The purpose of an ad is to bring in more customers. In order to do this, you have to let them know what you're "selling", in this case the OFFICIAL CoX fanzine. It has to get their attention, and the information needs to be easily memorable. That is the purpose of the URL at the bottom of this mock-up. I would think that it wouldn't be *too* hard for the marketing/community relations folk to put up a page that would link to the various issues of the Scoop- kind of like a devtracker for City Scoop issues.

Anyway, here's a quick and dirty mockup, using images from the ANCIENT fan website kit. (Hint to the community relations dept. : that CoV logo was the ONLY CoV item in the fansite kit!)

Of course there is another option. Not breaking immersion.

There are plenty of ads in the world that "tease" - that give limited information about a product in order to entice the viewer to learn what it's about for themselves. Suggesting (in-game) that the City Scoop is a completely in-game news service would still increase buzz about the real life, out-of-game Scoop.

Think about Positron for a second. Matt Miller is not a computer-generated guy in an armored suit ... but he is still Positron. Yet, in-game, Positron isn't a game designer. Nevertheless, when my heroes are in Steel Canyon looking at the guy who dispenses his Task Force, sometimes I think of the lead designer. And when the lead designer posts here on the board, I see his name and think of the radiation guy in Steel Canyon. Yet no one could say that the guy in Steel Canyon somehow breaks immersion. Why can't in-game ads be built on the same principle?
