Wow all this is awesome stuff. I'll try to compress as best I can.

Could I get some feedback from early villain teams? What did people bring once Villain pvp started getting organized?

Thanks for all the links and the feedback. I'll sort through it and try to make it into something interesting for old and new.

No mention of JAL?

[/ QUOTE ]

Back before I left the first time, JAL was like the whipping boy of the PvP SGs. Everyone that fought them would beat them by a wide wide margin. I remember a Penance vs JAL match where I scored 61 kills on my ice/devices blaster.

Like Lab said, JAL was a completely different team then.

That tank has 27 kills.

Why don't we do 20-minute matches anymore?

I like to refer to that as the Psypunk Era.

With less arena crashes, it shouldn't take 3 hours. Times between matches are usually long due to people heading to base to get t3s, base buffs, etc.

Yeah I remember coming over from protector with my spines/regen and challenging SoE to a duel when he was the 'best' dueler on freedom. I got an easy first kill then he proceeded to kill me 3 times to get the win. Earth/emp was a beast back when HO's were unnerfed...not as much as Dm/Da though

before the mez resist nerf it'd take 6 stacked holds to break through obsidian shield+acrobatics. plus acro decreases the hold duration, i'd only bring like 8 bf's against a troller and I'd be covered for the entire match

he did beat my spine/regen once (went 1-1 vs him with that build), the dm scrap with acro fared much better vs controllers than regen did. Blasters on the other hand would give me trouble sometimes while they were cake with teh regin

i think ob shield also used to have a higher hold resist than integration did, not entirely sure on that though, i was never a numbers guy.

I remember when we got a good lead in matches we would let Super Ghost play catch with his 2k+ boulder tosses.

ABH got into PvP on Infinity as soon as I4 hit. Agent Q was the founder and leader, and TGIA (the guy who listed the initial roster threads here) became their other leader. I got to know most of them through zone fights in those early days, but I didn't join them until later. (Omega, Skittler, Skin, and I were on the same team in the first IPvPL around that time). I participated with them in the initial server fights, which were total lag fests, but they were great for meeting other people interested in PvP.

I know ABH fought some of the early PvP SGs, including LD several times (you can see one of Rift's posts talking about ABH taking them to a rare, 3rd round on the LD site back in 2/07). One of my earliest Test experiences was playing aginst LD in 2 warm-up matches before they took on HVND (which we actually won, but lol practice matches).

Hey guys,

With #50 of the City Scoop coming up, I'm looking to document Arena history from Issue 4 to now.

Specially looking for:

-Colorful quotes and anecdotes from vets
-Team line-ups and their evolution
-Links to scores from matches back then
-Memorable matches/drama
-Teams from back in the day (seem to remember Tribute, Lion's Den, JAL, HVND, etc)
-How organized it was:

TL DR

Vets: lf some info on how it was back in the day, screenies to some scores, info on old teams, quotes, anything will help.

There were to leagues with drafts prior to the last league.
There were several server v server matches.
TP Foe actually used to be a pretty frequently used power (TP+ET+TF) if I remember correctly.
There were tanks and scrappers.

As mentioned the dead body thing.
Arena bug that shot you into peoples PVE missions instead of the match.

Sure more will come to me.

I remember Freaks fighting ABH in the early days. If my memory is correct, we used multiple bubblers on a match, and I think we caught ABH totally unprepared for that. Soon after we did the HVND fight, and I remember CZ telling me after that one of the reasons for them going with 7 ill trollers was the ABH match with our multiple bubbler setup.

Fun times!

Back when Issue 4 was on Test, the Blaster forums erupted in flames as many Blaster-centric players cried long and loud about how dreadfully gimped and doomed the entire AT was in PvP.

Flash forward to today and you'll see how absolutely ridiculous that claim was and is.

JAL wasn't a "PvP team" until like a year ago. Up until then, it was a normal SG that did PvP on the side. Naturally it couldn't compete with teams that were specifically created for PvP and did nothing but PvP (like every single other PvP team ever). They allowed absolutely anybody to join, as long as they were cool people. Skill didn't matter. If someone wanted to PvP, they could PvP with JAL (after getting turned down by everybody else). Essentially JAL was the only non-elitist team in the game....the only team that didn't look down on people if they lacked "mad pvp skillz".

Then they finally got tired of PvE and went all into PvP...started practicing regularly, actually set guidelines on recruitment, and became another one of the "win at all costs" PvP teams. And a little while later got to be #1. Just shows what it takes to win.

That wasn't before they lost almost all their members and picked up the best players in Unleashed (or all of it, idk how many people were in it)

You are way off when you say "Then they finally got tired of PvE and went all into PvP...started practicing regularly, actually set guidelines on recruitment"

The JAL team that got to be #1 had none, and I mean NONE of the regular original JAL players. Even Psypunk who was supposed to be their leader, was not part of the new PvP group that actually made it to the top.

Basically it was Alarys taking over JAL, and forming a totally new group, that although carried the same nametag, had nothing in common with the old group.

I do agree that it does show what it takes to win.
