Discussion: City of Heroes' Future is Groovy

im just wondering how much money do they need to overhaul the game mechcanics..after all..i dont see how you can go forward when the major issue is not capable of being done thanks to a limited system in place

how many times is that the reason for alot of things in the last 4 years

to get bigger they upgraded the servers that sorely needed it...how bout the overhaul of the game now?
we already know not to expect much in way of issue 12..nows a good a time as any to faceplant that money where it belongs before its gone.

im not ungrateful but i am alittle too realistic for my own good, instead of "somedays" i'd like to see the money hit ..the servers were a great start but theres more plan of action that is needed to a outdated database

There are a lot of exciting plans in motion that we expect will knock your socks off and take the City of Heroes/Villains franchise to the next level.

[/ QUOTE ]

But what IS the next level?

(and for the first person that says he means a level cap increase, I will personally spork you in the face)

[/ QUOTE ]

Level cap increase.

Are you gonna "spork" me now? sounds naughty!!

I appreciate the communication from the higher levels of the NCNC Org chart, but this doesn't actually tell us well, anything. I think this might have been a good place to tell us a little something about I12, even if it was "we plan to have I12 in closed beta testing in <insert timeframe>"

So it is exactly like politician talk...

Back on topic, I can't wait to see what tidbits are added for my mind numbing to deepen. Groovy? A trip back in time would be a blast IMHO... Not the flashback system, but a FLASHBACK system. Take me to WWII or even the Bushido days for some time stripping fun.

I think you're just going to have to wait and see before you doomy doomy doom. Or we can just presume the devs are lazy

That's my point though... It sets off a red flag or two when they talk about it being their first Priority but give no details on how they'll actually do it or what they will do differently to ensure we don't have 4 more years of the same old failures.

What we got instead was barely even a Blurb.

That's my point though... As basically the Top-Level of Operations-Management, it should be this guy's job to make sure that the direction they're going in is actually what the Customers want and is an efficient use of those resources. And here they have the most direct way of accessing that information but also a real history of failing to coordinate it efficiently. It sets off a red flag or two when they talk about it being their first Priority but give no details on how they'll actually do it or what they will do differently to ensure we don't have 4 more years of the same old failures.

Well, it is pre-election season for the States. Vague promises with no real plans are the hot thing at the moment right?

[/ QUOTE ]just so we know who we are dealing with, are you counting last year's releases as failures? given that they were hugely popular with the community and rolled out without major bugs, due to the closed beta testing, im just seeing what your definition of failures is, and wether there really is any rational space to debate the point in.

Thanks, NC Soft, for closing my favorite game ever without warning and with plenty of life still left in it, and thus relieving me of the burden of EVER wanting to buy, try or even hear about another game from your company. Will my decision make a dent, or persuade them in anyway, shape or form? Nope, obviously not. Don't care. NC Soft is dead to me. ~ PsyFox

If I knew I was going to be addressing forum readers, I don't think I would make that one of my priorities. If Issue 12 introduced level 60 PvP raid content on the moon soloable by villains with epic archetypes that unlocked customizable power effects while dropping respecifications inventions that allowed you to change your power sets while simultaneously reversed the nipple nerf, forum readers would wonder why there was no big red ball in the first mission, why the evil moon aliens have cooler assault rifles than the players, and why there's no body scaler that allows you to select the number of nipples your body has, all while PLing themselves to 60 and running all the content in one weekend, and then wondering what's holding up Issue 13.

I actually thought the news that CoH/V is going to get some completely new titles added to the franchise as well as continued content expansion was good news.

Having read this thread, obviously I was wrong.

That's nice, but I hope some specific things are going to be fixed.

(1) Big patch, and once again, the players are having to dig out things that look odd, document them, and be told "Oh, yeah, this didn't make it into the patch notes". This has gone on simply far too long. It has to end. The patch notes have to be complete.

(1a) The policy of "we don't document exploits in test server" patch notes has to be looked at, particularly when they are more than just "close that exploit". The XP for Welcome to Vanguard has no significant impact in real play, it's the Ouroboros flashback that had a big impact, so I don't mind that not being documented. But the Rikti Portal XP and the task force changes impact people playing the game as designed. I'm not going to say those changes are right or wrong, but when they impact normal game play, they have to be in the test server patch notes so they can be discussed and adjusted and removed. A hard and fast "if a change is to deal with an exploit, we don't document it" simply isn't acceptable.

(2) New content is great. But much of the old content is broken. There are some serious bugs in the Eden trial, there's a bug in the LRSF that is a REASON that the first mission is often softloaded. And even where there aren't bugs, the Freedom Phalanx and Shard task forces need work. Bases also need work.

New content is great, I'm looking forward to seeing what's coming in I12 and beyond. But if the current problems are just allowed to fester, that's not a good thing. And beyond my disagreements with some of these undocumented changes, I'm appalled at the "well, these things happen" attitude I'm hearing at these big changes going live without documentation. As you recruit and expand your team, will you be fixing your systems so these things can't happen, or will things just be multiplied?

At the end of the day, this dog and pony show will really bring us up to speed and go the extra mile on the fast track when we play hardball and jump headfirst out of the window of opportunity. Are we holding hands on this?

EDIT: And that's why Arcanaville wins the internets.

Does all mean that we get to do something new? Like customizing Mastermind Pets?? That would be pretty nifty to see as an imediate (easy?) feature to implement.

Unfortunatly, when dealing with a corporate structure this is often the case. The more checks and balances are put into place to deal with an upswing in the workforce, the more things fall through the cracks and the less that anyone above lower middle managment will call out the problem because they do not want to be the one blamed for the oversight/problem. So the problems multiply and just keep growing like a snow ball rolling down a mountain of fresh wet snow.

Unless it means a 2.0 game client, taking anything "to the next level" makes me a bit nervous. But, for now I'll just write it off as PM-speak and remain pleasantly optimistic.

Like a lot of folks, I've grown inordinately fond of my City stable of characters over the past few years, and any plan that accommodates me carrying them forward to whatever's next would be the most welcome of all.

Please try MA arc ID 351455, "Shard Stories: Scavenger's Hunt." Originally created for the Dr. Aeon contest, it explores the wild potential of one of the City's most concept-rich but content-poor settings: the Shadow Shard.

Uh oh, that sounds like we're in for an unpredictably bumpy ride. And we all know bumpy rides could be either fun or scarey depending on how old you are (in terms of game years of course).

Please use this thread to discuss the below announcement:

The following comes to you from the desk of Brian Clayton, NCNC Studio Manager and Executive Producer of City of Heroes / City of Villains:

I wanted to take a moment to follow up regarding Geoff's (Geoff Heath, CEO, NCsoft Europe) recent statements regarding City of Heroes future plans. To reiterate Geoff's comments and to restate our position from my original announcement of acquiring the City of Heroes Franchise, the future is very bright as we continue grow and reinvest heavily in this great product and community. There are a lot of exciting plans in motion that we expect will knock your socks off and take the City of Heroes/Villains franchise to the next level. However, our highest priority is to ensure that the quality of all new content being brought to the game meets and exceeds your expectations. With that goal in mind we have built a solid plan that positions us well for delivering just that! We're still not quite ready to reveal the specifics of our longer term initiatives, but know that we will share this info as soon as we can.

We continue to aggressively recruit and expand our team to meet these goals. I'm very happy to report that we've been successful in bringing on board some fantastic talent. I believe we have one of the most experienced, creative, and impassioned development teams in the industry working diligently to take your game experience to places you've been wanting to go, but thought not possible.

Thanks again to you, the community, for making City of Heroes & City of Villains the great online experience that it is!

Best,

-Brian
