Seriously. 30-40k people at once on one server is nothing for Eve. That said, I'm glad I have bad enough Alt-itis to be on 6 different servers.

It's not one server. The "Tranquility" name is the name of the entire farm of servers. Tranquility is the entry point. It's actually a HUGE server farm custom built for them by IBM (I believe). They have the shared universe model.

Did the Devs not say something about increasing the load capacity of the servers to compensate for this?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes. We upgraded our server hardware as part of our re-investment plan for City of Heroes/Villains, but the fact of the matter is that we've actually hit a new capacity threshhold.

To be clear....There are more players on Freedom now than have ever played on that server. Ever.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ok, in a fair response and hopefully a good idea, may I make a suggestion?

During any closed beta testing for any new issue release, you have the ability to lock certain people out, and allow certain people in.

I have noticed that on x2 XP weekend, alot of the people who are doing 2XP weekend are people who do not normally play the game or even have a constant active account. They only log in to farm, and when it is over, they go back to whatever lame game it is they played before coming to load up the servers.

In reference to this, is there a way this can be done to allow the regulars to log in freely while making the ones who do not regularly play be forced to wait for an empty spot?

I know this seems like a bit much, but in my mind and I am sure to alot of other regular players, this would seem a fair solution to the problem. If not now then maybe in the near future?

I'm kind of baffled why anyone that doesn't play on Freedom normally even has an opinion on this?

Not locked out of your toons? Good for you. Go play them.

I'm in agreement with the "let them run laggy if they have to" side of things. And yes, if they servers crash, then let them. Maybe the inf farmers and other "just started and/or transferred to Freedom this week" would go somewhere else.

My biggest wish for the Double XP and new Issue releases? For the love of all that is holy, STOP ADVERSTISING IT TO PEOPLE THAT DON'T PLAY ANYMORE. Wait a few weeks after a new issue. Don't tell them about double xp. Do people honestly think that the majority of these new players will be here next weekend? They won't. They'll be heading back to WoW or some other game and wait for the next double XP weekend. It's pathetic that they cater to these losers that do nothing to support this game.

I'm starting to think that they should prioritize login rights for by registration date and how current your subscription is. Oh, been playing for 36 months nonstop? Come right in, and thank your for your patronage. Started playing in 2005 but haven't logged in for 8 months? Well, we'll put you in a queue until things free up a bit.

I'm sorry, but "play on another server" holds no water. My SG, base, and friends are here. I don't want to start over somewhere else. I don't want to level up a level 1 toon when I want to play my lvl 41 TA/A defender that is a pain to level.

Go back to your low population server and play how you want. Until you get locked out of your home server, please just go away.

Funny, except for the 2xXP weekends, we laugh at people who're everywhere except Freedom cuz of all the "tumbleweed" complaints I hear about your 2 or 3 different servers.

What's your home server, Turbo? I'll ask Lighthouse to designate that the official PL server of CoX, so all the farmers can move there and boost your population. I mean, you have 2 or 3 others, so it's all hunky dory, right?

/e start rant

ya know, im kinda mad at all the comments that you guys (regular freedomites) you are getting about not being able to log in.

These people are coming from other servers and saying basically it's your own fault for only playing on freedom, and that you should just re-roll on another server and be done with it. that just irks me.

As a long time player (granted not since beta- but I've been playing a long time), who are YOU to tell ME that I can't complain? you have alt-itis? yea YOU! why should I have to catch YOUR DISEASE to enjoy a game? Every1 I know plays on freedom-- maybe its about more then just being able to level the character I want-- maybe I want to play with my friends. maybe I want to use my fully functional base?

I have to laugh when some1 says that every server is the same. NOT every server has the same people playing on it-- maybe I don't want to make new friends-- maybe I don't want to have to listen to RP in atlas park or pocket D. I don't WANT to make new friends on different servers- I like the friends that I have now- (who make enough demands on my time). ever try belonging to 3 different SG's? try belonging to different SG's on different servers. maybe I don't want to have to build a new rep, I have an excellent rep on MY SERVER now! I don't want to have to go back and start on day 1. MAYBE, i am just a SHY person- and don't like to talk to people I don't know??? hmmmmm?

I DO have my villains on another server (pin*hic*cle) --- but somehow i end up making *1* villain here and have leveled her farther then I do with my 5 other villains on the other server-- why? because I am able to find teams with my friends a LOT easier then I can over on that other server. why should I have to sell myself to people on another server-- when I have already done so on freedom? hmmm?

This might come off a bit harsh, but it's something I want to say. It's a forum, deal with it. I'm allowed an opinion.

You bunch of social hypocrites. Every one of the negative posters in this thread has posts that encompass a wide variety of interests and interacts with a large amount of people. I'm startled by the fact you miss this simple parallel between social interaction in a forum and interaction on a high population server. Where you all like to move around to different sections freely, that's how I view Freedom. If you feel like discussing art, you go to the fan art or comic book section. If I feel like talking about things like that I start up a conversation with the really excellent bio writers I know on Freedom, or the ones that are phenomenal with putting together a costume to fit a theme.

There are so many people on this server that I feel most long time Freedom players have formed as large, if not larger friend networks than most might have just through regular play. I feel this way because that's how I've "met" people on Freedom, and how my friends on Freedom have told me they met their friends. Speaking for myself, the vast majority of my friends play exclusively on Freedom. Global channels and global friends is just a way to stay in contact with them when they're on the opposite side as I am.

You want a direct correlation to what it's like to a forumite? Our entire friendship network resides on this server. We have all the different types of social connections we want or need in this one place. A lot of my friends on this server have one character they love to play, and they love to play them with their friends who also love to play one (and possibly two) different characters. For the connection how about when there's a paradigm shift in a forum section or moderation policies. There is a large outcry from the entire population on both sides of the situation. This is no different.

How about we take it a step further, then I'll share a very recent example of something like this happening in the forums. Imagine there was no distinction of topics in the forum and only a limited number of people could be logged in to post at any one time. Someone had to close a browser or actively log out for a new person to log in and be able to post. My previous history example is of the Suggestions & Ideas section movement and change in tenor. I'd say that it is highly likely the reactions it had that something like that would be even more polarizing. They're both (forums and the game) social constructs. Both are playstyles. One is more traditional play, the forum example is a more (arguably) intellectual way to play. Ask yourself this. If they put the same restrictions on the forums, how would you react? The same way the people who play on Freedom are?

Grow up. You vent steam in your own threads about things you don't like that the Developers do, we're allowed to do the same. Call us names, but at least be consistent with it and don't act like your way is better. A lot of the posters in this Freedom thread and the ones in the Tech section I've lost respect for from this. I'd thought some of you were a little better than you've acted.

dude- guys, chill out-- you know as well as I do - that if we weren't locked out and we were on the game and it was unplayable due to lag or rubberbanding or the MSC that there would be a thread a mile long about how you cant get your double xp because of it. I know there would be cause every single time we have double xp a thread like that pops up. so ya gotta wait to log in... seriously-- it's not like y'all weren't warned that there would be lock outs if the server hit threshholds. i do think that the devs should make a queing system tho- so at least you don't have to keep refreshing the page to try to get in....

i feel your pain guys- but seriously-- its only a lil bit of wait time- chillax

I have a couple of comments on this.

First theres nothing we can do about the cap. Its a smarter decision to have a capped number of people on a server for stability then it does to have everyone on and laggy. It sucks if your on the wrong side of the fence but if you were on a laggy server you'd be mad as well.

To all the people who have nothing better to do then come to another servers forum and try to start trouble. That tells me one of two things. Either you don't understand what a community in COX is and miss out on a large part of the game if you don't. Try joining a SG or finding friends you really enjoy playing with then be told tough luck go do something else. Or you have nothing better to do with your time then go to a forum that has nothing to do with you and start trouble. Try taking up a hobby.

The thing that makes a game server fun is the community. So if you like the community you are in why would you leave and make toons in another one? You would want to play with your freinds. So you make toons on that server you enjoy playing. Not being able to play them on a day you get double xp is angering. Why should you play on another toon on another server you have no intention of staying on? Personally I have my heroes on Freedom and my villains on another server because I like playing both but if I only played one of the other I'd stick to one community and not be everywhere.

Thank Heaven! the crisis-
The danger is past,
And the lingering illness
Is over at last-
And the fever called "Living"
Is conquered at last.

Sadly, I know
I am shorn of my strength,
And no muscle I move
As I lie at full length-
But no matter!-I feel
I am better at length.

And I rest so composedly,
Now, in my bed
That any beholder
Might fancy me dead-
Might start at beholding me,
Thinking me dead.

The moaning and groaning,
The sighing and sobbing,
Are quieted now,
With that horrible throbbing
At heart:- ah, that horrible,
Horrible throbbing!

The sickness- the nausea-
The pitiless pain-
Have ceased, with the fever
That maddened my brain-
With the fever called "Living"
That burned in my brain.

And oh! of all tortures
That torture the worst
Has abated- the terrible
Torture of thirst
For the naphthaline river
Of Passion accurst:-
I have drunk of a water
That quenches all thirst:-

Of a water that flows,
With a lullaby sound,
From a spring but a very few
Feet under ground-
From a cavern not very far
Down under ground.

And ah! let it never
Be foolishly said
That my room it is gloomy
And narrow my bed;
For man never slept
In a different bed-
And, to sleep, you must slumber
In just such a bed.

My tantalized spirit
Here blandly reposes,
Forgetting, or never
Regretting its roses-
Its old agitations
Of myrtles and roses:

For now, while so quietly
Lying, it fancies
A holier odor
About it, of pansies-
A rosemary odor,
Commingled with pansies-
With rue and the beautiful
Puritan pansies.

And so it lies happily,
Bathing in many
A dream of the truth
And the beauty of Annie-
Drowned in a bath
Of the tresses of Annie.

She tenderly kissed me,
She fondly caressed,
And then I fell gently
To sleep on her breast-
Deeply to sleep
From the heaven of her breast.

When the light was extinguished,
She covered me warm,
And she prayed to the angels
To keep me from harm-
To the queen of the angels
To shield me from harm.

And I lie so composedly,
Now, in my bed,
(Knowing her love)
That you fancy me dead-
And I rest so contentedly,
Now, in my bed,
(With her love at my breast)
That you fancy me dead-
That you shudder to look at me,
Thinking me dead.

But my heart it is brighter
Than all of the many
Stars in the sky,
For it sparkles with Annie-
It glows with the light
Of the love of my Annie-
With the thought of the light
Of the eyes of my Annie.

I don't know that those people forcibly moved would be very happy about that solution either.

Folks, the bottom line is that we've accommodated more people playing than we ever have before. In the last Double XP, the server would lag out and simply drop you or people would log in disgust over a poor play experience. The gameplay experience is significantly improved over that and with significantly more people playing.

[/ QUOTE ]

If I am reading this right, y'all kinda KNEW this was an issue and didn't at all prepare the playerbase. That is a shame, and really, really poor PR work. If the lockout was a contingency plan or something y'all were going to do, WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Not that it probably would have made much of a difference, but knowledge being power and all, you could have at least prepared us for the possibility that the server load would be capped and that it would be possible that some of us would not be able to get on (and I will admit this did NOT happen to me).

[ QUOTE ]

Yes, server transfers are something we will be looking at. However, they are there so people can play where they want to play. We don't want to force someone to not be able to play with their friends. While it is certainly less than optimal to resort to a server cap for a few peak hours on a double XP weekend, we feel that allowing people to move where they want for 99.9% of the rest of the time is a very nice feature.

Ultimately, we will continue to review how the service is run and make the choices we feel will benefit our customers as best as possible. Hopefully more of you will agree than not. Again, our thanks for your continued patronage and support.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ultimately I think that once again the PR staff needs a swift kick in the rear. Please take the time to review your policy of apologizing after the fact instead of preparing us beforehand. It stinks. I can't believe that such a "hope for the best" instead of "preparing for the worst" policy still exists today.

I sincerely hope that you review and revise your policies towards keeping the playerbase informed about such possibilities in the future.

I'm from Triumph, so pardon me if I'm not getting the picture.

Y'all are complaining of the overpopulated servers being locked out? And you blame server transfers, right? Um...

Doesn't everyone have the same number of character slots on Freedom? Everyone has the same capacity to create characters on Freedom as everyone else. What difference does it make if the characters there are transfers or "home grown?" I personally have every slot on Freedom filled with an alt, and not a single one of them is a transfer. If I decide to play these alts this weekend, I'm as much a part of the problem as the "rampant transfers" everyone seems so paranoid about. Everyone thought transfers should be restricted... Should we restrict the number of characters a player can create too?

I truly don't understand why everyone is complaining about the population caps. The caps are OVER the previous population limits... and the lag/stability issues have all but disappeared. This means that the servers can handle more people, and handle them better than ever before. The only issue here is that so many people are logging on (across ALL of the servers) that people are now aware there IS a cap. There might not have been a true ceiling before, but a lagfest server DOES indicate a server that is very overtaxed, which is kinda the whole issue the server upgrades were trying to take care of.

Servers are finite, people, and character slots are the same for everybody. I'd hate to be locked out of my home too, but as several have mentioned before, everyone complaining here would have started a different thread about lag if there was NO cap.

the notion that the client base should change to support a non-scalable server is just goofy.

to stagger the load you have to change the parameters of double xp weekend ~

the easy solution is an in game timer on each account. everyone gets X amount of predetermined double xp hours; same as a the concept of a nemi staff ~

this ALSO allows for those that work weekends to participate.
