NCsoft President Speaks on Publisher's Future
[ QUOTE ]
We're going to introduce a lot of new services that will make it easier for people to start playing games right away and make them have easier connections to the people and friends that they play with.
[/ QUOTE ]
So, I wonder what this means, if anything for CoH? Is City Vault part of these "new services" Ability to access global chat from outside the game perhaps?
I sincerely hope one of these new services is a multi-game subscription model. While I'd like to give Tabula Rasa a shot, I don't see myself paying full price to subscriber to two MMOs at the same time. Give me a good discounted plan, and I'm in though.
I don't know why the interviewer assumed that the President couldn't give numbers for TR boxes sold. Seems like the interview may not be aware that NCSoft publically reports that kind of information in its reports to stockholders. Unless he was working from a "its too soon" point of view.

I'm indifferent to a PS3 conversion. I wonder if a PS3 port would conincide with a sequel to the game? It would certainly be an avenue of approach I would look into.
Interestingly, there's a single player game coming out on the PS3 called Infamous, which (according to its wiki page) borrows elements of CoH, but it makes no mention of additional online gameplay with others.
first off who says sony wont make a keyboard for ps3
second who says it wont be online becuase ps3 has online capabilities
third it wont change your game play at all except add more people in to the game
the real issue is how will updates be handeled
reast that crap is trivial look at xmen legends each xman has about 9 powers one your done leveling them and they make it work on controler
this doent really effect any of you becuase controler are more efficient
but they should focus on a single player mode aswell so players wont be forced to do the whole monthly fee if they dont
looking at the situation with the ideals why we cant doesnt solve anything
seeing how this is suggested alot some one got their wish

Re: the whole PS3 keyboard issue: I suspect very much that they will build voice chat into the engine, both for the PS3 version and the PC. Some newer MMO's seem to be going that way now. LOTRO certainly has and I expect others too as well (if they haven't already). Not that I'm a fan of it to be honest, especially as now in LOTRO you can have problems getting a group at times if you don't voice chat as some group leaders insist that you do. My problem is it ruins the immersion a little when you find yourself teamed with a dwarf with a strong Mexican accent (_NOT_ a dig at Mexicans - dwarves seem to get cast as Scots a lot so I'm used to that more) and a female elf hunter with a deep booming voice... Not that it matters so much in a Super Hero game I guess. Plus there are already a number of people who use Ventrilo and similar while playing (not me though). Anyhow, that's the direction I'm expecting it to head.
Of course voice chat doesn't solve all the issues and a keyboard might still be needed.

Ugh, CoH on a console. What an abomination.

I'm curious to how it would work...given the amount of powers you acquire...though my friend uses his 360 controller when playing FF11
[/ QUOTE ]
Have you seen a 360 controller? Mine has the following that would be available for any game to address and use:
[*] Two analog thumbsticks[*] Two buttons "under" those thumbsticks (you can click them "down" or "in", relative to the controller main body, and it registers as a separate button)[*] One four-register "Directional Pad"[*] The Start and Back buttons[*] The four A/B/X/Y buttons[*] Two trigger buttons, left and right[*] Two shoulder buttons, left and right
So ...
[*] Right button to cycle between Power trays and Inspiration trays[*] A, B, X, Y, and both triggers - that's six controls. If we use the left trigger as a "shift" / modifier button, we can get ten controls (A, B, X, Y, and Right trigger with ... versus A, B, X, Y, and Right trigger without). That's an entire power tray covered.[*] Ignoring the Shift function, the Inspiration tray is only ever, what, five columns? So the Left Trigger could be "free select" mode within the Inspiration tray, guided by the right thumbstick; once you release, whichever inspiration was highlighted, is used. Add a single "Cancel" spot above the topmost row and you're golden.[*] The Back button can be used to call up a series of management screens - Enhancements, the various Options tabs, etc. Standard menu navigation in there would work fine.[*] Toggle Mouse -vs- Camera for the right thumbstick, via the button right under it.[*] "Tab: next enemy" can be handled by the button under the left thumbstick[*] Movement, via the left thumbstick. Left shoulder button modifies this for strafing up/down instead of forward/backward.[*] D-pad "up" toggles the Salvage tray open[*] D-pad "down" toggles the Recipe tray open[*] D-pad "right" cycles through [nul]<-->[map]<-->[contacts]<-->[missions][*] D-pad "left" opens the Costume Selection window
...
That's not complete, and can almost definitely be improved upon. But, it's WITHOUT the Messenger Kit addon, and it's covered most of the controls you need to get to "fast" in this game. ^_^
And all that ignores simply using a USB keyboard and USB mouse.
...
I'm not saying I want a console version of CoH ... but I am saying, it's physically feasible, in terms of the UI.
Did anyone other than me play Diablo on the Playstation after playing it on a PC? I did not think it ported over well to the console myself, and I truthfully do not see CoX porting over very well.
How do you control 3 trays of powers with a console controller with any sembelance [sp?] of speed?
I see a lot of problems with porting this over to a console, nevermind that I have too much invested in my PC to spend $ buying a console that I don't really want.
[ QUOTE ]
While I am admittedly hesitant about the idea of a PS3 port of Co*... it may be a good idea to incorporate a stable platform for gaming and a mass of people that haven't played it yet, infusing the game with more people (and maybe new servers? One could hope) and more money to give everyone even more awesomeness...
[/ QUOTE ]
If they're going to release CoH on another platform to attract a mass of people who haven't played it yet, I would highly suggest that the platform be native Mac and Linux clients instead of a console. There would be a fraction of the work involved. And I know that CoH runs under Cedega and I think Parallels, but not as well as a native client would. (I haven't tried Parallels, but I have and still do run it under Cedega, and there are graphics card detection issues that keep the game from using some advanced graphics settings.)
I think they would capture a pretty decent share of the Mac and Linux gaming market right up front, and the publicity generated by it would increase the subscriber base by quite a bit.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
If people are worried about "an element" of gamers that is "unsavory" entering CoX as a result of PS3 access need I remind you that everyone and their granny has a computer these days. Anyone who's an MMO fan will probably already be playing it on the PC. Including the numerous unsavory folks we already tolerate daily. PS3 won't add anything to it that we aren't already putting up with. Meet a moron in game? Ignore an never team with em again.
My advice would be to consolidate some of the commonly low traffic servers (2-4 of them) and use that hardware for PS3 players if the existing fanbase is really that scared of console gamers.
Honestly, I can't see trying to get PS3 gamers into MMOs as anything but a waste of time (and Dev time and money) except for the few who don't have as much access to their family PC as they do their PS3.
In all honesty though, I've heard of people playing CoX with the xBox360 remote on their PCs and we could always plug a USB keyboard into a PS3 or use voice chat. But Tabula Rasa is probably the most likely to end up a PS3 port. Voice chat is already something that is preferable to typing in such a fast paced game and the necessary controls are minimal.

Linux users are all typically knowledgeable enough that if they want to play CoH or ANY PC game they have their Linux system setup to do w/o special software adaptations from the company. Mac can do Boot Camp so people that wanna play anything other than Chess, Solitaire, or WoW would have to already have Windows on their PC. Even then, Mac would still be the most viable to make a special edition for I think.

The PS1 did not have as complex and capable a controller as later consoles.

See above.
My characters get by just fine with ONE tray of "omg I need it faaaaast" powers, and a slightly-delayed access to the other two trays.

Server mergers would cause more catastrophic problems than they could ever solve, EVEN if it's just done to "move the PC users out to make room for the console folks".

Beat me to it.
As a player who's been playing since launch, by choice, on less populated servers, I would riot if they did this. Let's just start the problems with "who gets to keep his/her name" and go from there...
The PS3 has tons of USB ports. You could play the game with a USB mouse and keyboard easily. A bluetooth version would be even better though.
Honestly, the best thing that could come out of CoH on the PS3 is a massive graphics overhaul. It's actually amazing how good this game still looks, but it could use a technical facelift all the same.

I would rather NCSoft and the development team, in their new digs, re-double their efforts in ehancing the current format of CoX by adding new features, working out bugs, and just improving on the overall playability and functions the game already has.
With all the issues that have been released there are still problems with enemies your toon fights getting stuck in a wall, hiccups at Wentworths, lag during game play, spammers in the game, etc. These little things need to be fixed first along with adding all the wonderful oo shiny content that has been added over the past issues.
One arguement being debated on the forum is what to do with LVL 50 toons once you get there along with the rather lack luster "ta dah" that happens when we reach the end game ie lvl 50. Since this is the maximum level we can reach, perhaps the devs could make more content regarding what happens when a toon crosses that threshold.
Another arguement I have heard is that players don't necessarily want more lvls after 50, but want to be able to get the rest of the enhancement slots available for any powers that they were only able to put 2 slots on when it is possible to have 6, but they reached lvl 50 before they could add any more. One possibility to do this is through the new Orobours missions.
At any rate I hope the developers will continue the great work they are doing and look forward to more content as the year goes by.

Dude. It's all I can do to keep from buying a console right now. Anything could end up being the straw that breaks the camel's back on that purchase decision.
Especially if it means that my character feels more super while flying around using the analog sticks and vibrations letting me know I got hit.
Name changes alone would piss off a huge portion of the player base if they merged the servers.

As has already been observed: console gamers are generally NOT substandard to PC gamers, not any more.
Also: we're already here, anyway.
I think it would benefit better if it was a 360 release, but they chose the Ps3, and I suppose whatever reasons they did that for are in their best interests. It would work well on either console, but I'd be hesistant to port anything to Ps3 until their online numbers hit where Live's are. As far as playing on a console, I used to play FFXI with a wireless keyboard on my 360, only reason I stopped playing it was it grew stale. Grats to Chris Chung, hope you can fill the shoes of your predecesor. I wouldn't mind seeing Tabula Rasa on a console. As far as being exclusive, that's just retarded, you're restricting yourself from taking in more money, remember more money is a good thing.
