Discussion: Configuring Your In-Game Web Options
I love the concept...but I can understand those who are a bit concerned about the privacy issues.
One thing I don't see in the list is "Hide me completely". If you've disabled everything, does your name and costume still show? Perhaps a simple solution would be a new setting, "Show me on web page", defaulting to No. The first thing I'd do would be to log into all my characters and change that to Yes...but the option should be there.
The ability to have a page for supergroups would be great. It wouldn't include people hidden in the roster (perhaps a count of hidden members) but it would be very nice to see.
I'm very excited about this opportunity, it sounds great.
My arcs are constantly shifting, just search for GadgetDon for the latest.

I was playing WoW when the Armory launched. For those that don't know, it's a site that displays all the character information for active WoW characters. This includes all your gear, your faction reputation, your trade skills, and your complete character build. It was like instantly making every WoW character naked to the world, and there was no way to opt out.
I have to admit I felt a little sensitive about it at first. I remember my husband and I talking about it the day it launched and one of us said "this would never fly in CoH, people would go insane about their privacy." I'm guessing the devs knew this would be the case and came up with an opt out option from the get-go.
For the record, our WoW experience wasn't really any worse off because of the Armory. I didn't get any more spam than I was before. I didn't get criticisms of my build, and I never saw anyone kicked from a team because of their build. I did use it to look up the opposing faction at times, but usually after I'd killed them: "Oh that's why I pwned his butt so easily." I found I actually enjoyed using the Armory to show off my character, and to look up my friends' characters.
I'd welcome something like this in CoH: especially if it shows costumes and character bios. I honestly love reading people's bios and admiring a good concept.

I have never played WOW. Truthfully, I never had any interest in MMO's until hearing about COH even before it was in beta. Once I was in COH beta it was all over and I was/am hooked. COH has brought me in to the fold of MMO's.
After reading your post, Anachrodragon. I checked out the Armory site and was blown away. Something like that for COX would be incredible, very impressive use of ingame information to enrich community immersion. I could see the Titan Network or some other fansites growing into that and more.
I would love to see info on my toons online, and the more the better.

The problem with putting the names out there by default means the damage is already done. Once your name is out there the spammers can get you. I would still rather not have to do this for some 100+ alts that I have.
[/ QUOTE ]
Do you play all 100 of those alts regularly? Characters who haven't been logged in recently are excluded.
I have a feeling, EvilRyu (and others with spammer concerns), that they can already find out every name on every server. All they'd need to do is use the name-check feature that has been in the game for months. Wouldn't be too hard to whip up a program that just generates names to search for, and those that get hit as already taken get put into a file for later spamming. How else would they be so good at getting names of characters that are rarely played? I've got more spam mail on my neglected toons than on the ones that I rotate through regularly.
Concern over having your name on a list is a bit late, at this point, I'm afraid. They've already got it, most likely, and have sold it to other sites. Whatever the devs are cooking up to combat it is the only thing thats gonna stem the tide of spammers.

Just wondering for the privacy conscious, even if this system doesn't publish their character names, if someone else has their name on a friend list for positive or negative reasons, their names could still be made public without their consent?
I think the "Friend's List" option is stupid. No one needs to know who your friends are, especially people who like to harrass folks.

The EQ2players site predates the Armory with many similar features- character data, profiles, even guild portals with an (oft-broken) java chat applet that went straight to the in-game guild chat channel.
As is common, WoW took the idea and polished it considerably.
From what I heard, LOTRO was supposed to have something similar, with some sort of built in "journal" blog-ish thing, but I can't find it.
Yay! I've always hoped you guys would put those online. Makes it much easier than remembering to update them by hand for all my alts.
It'd also be super cool if the characters had profile/screen shots or rotatable character views of our costumes online.

It is account based not character base if I am not mistaken. That just like when they did the name purge, they did it based totally on if your account was active not if you had logged into each individual toon.

Shared with the world, maybe not.
But if there was a view that brought up your toons by default (say you logged into it like you might at plaync, and your toons were arranged by account/server), with links to friends' toons based off your in-game list, might be nice. Same with SG members.

Is all of this concerning those web sites that you can log your badges onto and stuff? And things like Herostats? I just don't see what the big deal is. Why do I care if someone sees my power choices or Friends list? Are people really THAT worried? And what I want more to know is why are people looking at my information anywhere but in game? They must be very bored.
I can understand the PvP side of it, but as a whole... pffft and meh.

I guess this is what I was failing to get at. I can see a point to this.
I am decidedly on the fence here!!! heh I want to see it in application, but it could be very kool/ the suk. there has been a lot of concern voiced about the SPAMMERS. only way to get rid of them is to NOT USE THEM!!! does anyone really use the gold farmers services?? really?? come on people have a little pride!

In general, I like this idea. I'm not worried about spammers getting any more information than they already have - characters that don't log in for 50+ days get just as much mail spam as characters who log in daily, so I figure that's not going to change much, and I'm not getting /tells as often.
On the other hand, I am, like several other people, questioning WHY our friends lists are going up? Especially if they're hidden by default. I'm certainly not changing that (on any of my characters), I'm fairly positive Imp's not changing it, and I can be just about as certain that Kendaer's not, either - although both of them had the reaction of "Cool!" to the announcement otherwise. Frankly, I just can't see the reasoning behind this particular choice.
If at all possible, I'd like to hear the official design & development reasoning behind making the "friend's list" publishable. I understand the argued reason (above) of friend-of-a-friend could be my friend, but I also understand the multiple pitfalls, and if that's the actual reason, I'd like to be given the opportunity to write a counter argument.
Once Lighthouse has the "rest of the information," I look forward to finding out what all will actually be published - including such things as costumes, bios, etc; I'd also like to find out if we'll be given the opportunity to link to (or be provided with space for) extended biographies and other, more detailed information on our characters that the game doesn't have space for.

Here's the mindset behind it.
We're only in-game for a finite time, but,
1) as these forums suggest, there are times when we're NOT online, but part of the community. The more resources you give to the community, the more robust it can be.
2) the greatest selling point of the game is the MASSIVE character customization and variety of options. That's tough to see before you download and login. These pages could serve as a great selling point to others.
3) "friend referrals" are some of the most effective ways for games to be adopted. Many gaming mags are seen as untrustworthy and gaming shops are largely "meh" on information. Friends work.
Now, you have a myspae page. You link to feeds of your characters- a bit more interesting to browse through than a text description or a link that says "I play ___."
The problem with putting the names out there by default means the damage is already done. Once your name is out there the spammers can get you. I would still rather not have to do this for some 100+ alts that I have.
