Discussion: Configuring Your In-Game Web Options

However, keep in mind that if you have an alt and haven't logged into it in over 90 days, it won't be showing up anyway until you do log into it. So, you only need to be concerned with characters you have logged into in the last 3 months.
[/ QUOTE ]
Would it be possible to default all characters to have the 90-day rule applied? That would allow people to set their characters' options as they logged in to play them rather than having to remember which characters they played in the last 3 months and logging in to each one of them simply to change the settings.
[/ QUOTE ]
This would also be an acceptible approach, IMO; at least then, you don't have to pre-emptively close things down, if you prefer not to share one or another sort of information with others.
Also, keep in mind that there was some bug that set everyone to active 2 days ago. At least all 8 of the SGs I have characters in have completely active rosters. I'd bet that it's the same bit that's used to show inactivity... so uh... everyone's gonna be on that page, including inactives... at least for the next 90 days (Though I suppose this could have only happened on Virtue)

Hey, JKevinCarrier, did you know you can completely opt out of the system before it goes live?

Hey, Creole, did you know osme people have dozens, or even SCORES, of characters ... and to opt out "completely", you have to log into each and every single one?
That's my complaint: no account-wide "set all my characters to 'Not shown', thanks" option. And I consider it a flaw in the plan, even though MOST of my characters will display MOST details happily and unreservedly.

Hi Pax Arcana,
Yes, we hear you and have passed on the desire for some global settings. However, keep in mind that if you have an alt and haven't logged into it in over 90 days, it won't be showing up anyway until you do log into it. So, you only need to be concerned with characters you have logged into in the last 3 months.
Hopefully that will reduce the amount of logging in people have to do. Thanks for your understanding with the system as it currently is. We're very excited to reveal soon the full nature of how these in game settings and their corresponding data will be used.

Even though I'm excited about this web view thingie (I'd racked my brain a few times in the past trying to figure out if it DID anything already and what).. I gotta admit.. a global setting for as many options as possible would be really useful.. especially if it applies to new characters.. Of the two, I'd personally prefer the global settings option, personally.
Just to put into perspective how much some of us would value said global options.

I'll second the motion to make friends lists non viewable by default, it's no one else's business who is friends with who unless said person offers that information.

Well no one made you create that many characters so if it's so inconvenient for you to opt them all out then perhaps you shouldn't bother.
And perhaps you can explain to me what the fear is all about? What exactly are you afraid people are going to see? Are you afraid people will see your character? Seriously, is that the problem?

You might want to actually look at it in-game, because yoru claim is not accurate. Maybe it's SUPPOSED to be "not shown" by default, but the settings currently are defaulting to "shown".

So, if someone plays one character to 50, they should turn their back on CoH forever, and stop paying? Come on - the game is purposefully designed to promote altoholism.

Fear" There's no fear. Hey, most of my characters will be 100% visible (friends list aside). It simply sticks in my craw that, if I felt otherwise, I have to manually change each and every one of them. It strikes me as inexcusably bad planning, and a shocking lack of foresight (or consideration).
Friends list defaults to hidden, it's the only on of them reversed from the others by default, at least when I looked at my options. If not they should force it to off at first just in case (but then any who had enabled it would have to do so again).
At the meet & greet they previewed City Vault (the part of the website for these features) and it was very well done from what I could see. Of course it was still beta so things could still change before it goes live. I'm hoping we do see a feature either ingame or on the City Vault site that allows for a 'apply to all characters on account' setting.
There are pics of the web page in the Meet and Greet thread, on page 144 if I remember right. You can see in the pics some of what info will be available, like how many hours you've played that character, how much time you've spent in each zones, influence earned, how much time you've spent online, and whatnot.
I also realized while looking at them that the web page will be loaded with tons of level 1 SG padding characters because of the padding going on in preperation for the prestige bonus. So there should be plenty of pages for the nosey types to snoop through.

In my options, "Hide Friends from web page" is indeed "Enabled," meaning the friends list would be hidden, just as Lighthouse and the poster you're replying to said it would be. Have you checked several of your characters to see if they're all showing the "Hide friends" line as disabled?
On my characters (39 of them), the option "Hide Friends from Web Page" was not enabled for any of them. I had to enable that option along with the other options on all characters. (Except my newest two, who will be unhidden.)

It's not uniform across all characters on my account, but I've a few who aren't "Hidden: Enabled". I took a screenshot a while ago, of one character I hadn't logged onto in ... well, since before Vet Rewards went live, so, quite a number of months!
And, indeed ... take a look.
So, having a web-based interface, with the options "set account default to THIS" and "restore all characters to account default" would be, IMO, a very very good idea.
I believe there were no options on the characters back then for friends list (but some of the others were there but did nothing). Since you hadn't logged in in so long it would have been exempted from the display anyway (being over 90 days since last login with that character). I suspect this may be the issue some at least are running into. They probably pushed the default settings out to characters that were 'eligigible' to show up in the City Vault only to cut down on database access.
(qr) egad this thread is huge. If it hasn't been mentioned, could there be a blog-friendly thingie for us show off our COH/COV-ness on our favorite blog, similar to those things Xbox Live users have? Just a thought for those of us who blog on Gamespot, MySpace, etc.
I had hoped the devs had enough respect for peoples' privacy that they would provide a way for those not wanting to be a part of this to opt out of it. From what I've read about this 'feature' it seems I was wrong. While we can block four catagories of information our characters, complete with pictures, will still appear on the site. I shouldn't be surprised considering thier pattern of trying to force people to use other game features many don't consider to be fun.
Lighthouse, would there be a possibility for a web-based interface to globally or by character set the options?
Maybe as part of the Account Page?

EQII and WoW don't have ANY 'opt-out" features. They don't give account names, but they don't have any of the options NCSoft is giving us either.
Maybe things have changed but i do remember EQ2 character pics are not automatically displayed. You had to go and manually upload a pic for each character profile. I don't remember all the privacy settings you can check off but there were a lot of them and they were managed on the website not the game client. Still not sure why NCSoft is doing it that way...seems inefficient and awkward from a user perspective.
I haven't had an EQ2 account in a long time so memory is very hazy. Maybe someone who's currently playing EQ2 could chime in.
