I see there are a number of Bay Area people here. How many were in the Bay Area for the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake?

Is that the one where I saw these old news-videos about highways that got flattened and the pancaked cars stuck inbetween bridges... and watched people getting pullled out of burning houses that lost one story... etc.?

And don't forget a section of the Bay Bridge collapsed. Also, this happened during the Bay Bridge World Series live broadcast. Everyone around the world watching was a witness. I'm wondering, were any Devs in the Bay Area at that time?

I remember Loma Prieta. I felt it while waiting outside for a ride to pick me up. In southern Orange County. But the Northridge quake is the biggest one I've been through. I never experienced eternity until those 45 seconds.

5 hurricanes;
1 tsunami;
1 tornado;
2 earthquakes

Also, while my home wasn't in the path, I've had to deal with wildfires as well.

The one thing I love about living in Wisconsin, no wildfires, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, and not many tornadoes to speak of. I believe that I have a relatively stable home state....but I still want to live in California for some period of my life...maybe Grad School.

Okay, I just gotta say...as a Canadian living in California, that earthquake scared the SNOT out of me.

I'm totally not ashamed to admit it.

I had three kids, a roomate, and a husband looking at me and saying, "Are you kidding me with this? Knock it off, you're scaring the cat."

That was totally not fun. It was the opposite of fun. It was unfun. But...I'm fine. I'm aaaaaaaaaalllright. Ohhhhkay. Just peachy.

It was and I gotta say, not impressed. But I grew up in the south and midwest. I've faced down hurricanes, tornades, thunderstorms, hail, sleet, blizzards, you name it I've been in it. Got myself into a load of trouble by venturing out into a hurricane with a trash can lid when I was a wee lad. I was trying to turn myself into an untethered kite in 100+ mph winds before my mother caught me.

This earthquake just rounded off my exposure to natural disasters. All I need now is a volcanic eruption to complete the set.

Okay, so sure it was surreal, but no more surreal than vibrant green funnel clouds or standing outside in the eye of a hurricane.

It was a small one. Some day.... since you live and work quite near a fault area, you'll probably have the experience of a real earthquake.

I live in the middle of San Diego, and when the Northridge quake back in .... 90whatever it was, happened, I awoke slightly before it actually shook the building (I'm like a dog that way, standing there wondering why the HELL I'm standing up in the middle of the night? oh - because the room's shaking now). And that was several hundred miles away. THAT one was a big quake. Friend lost her house in that, actually.

But look at it this way: you aren't likely to get too hurt in a quake. Hurricanes? Tornadoes? Those things really do a lot of damage for a long time. Earthquakes are things that slap you around a couple times in an hour and then leave you be for another 4 or 5 years.

And look at it THIS way: you're from Canada! The pacific fault line area is actually forcing the coast NORTHward, so .... it just wants to return you to your rightful place! Very, very slowly!

My wife freaks out about earthquakes too.

The second earthquake was the best one.

We were coming of Safeway when it hit... She just start running. I had to run and catch her to make her stop.

How do you fight an eathquake, anyway?

I live in such a boring country, natrural disaster wise. The worst we get here in Denmark is a fierce blizzard every other winter and some flooded basements. Well... that's not completely true. We got a hurricane strength blizzard some years ago. That was a good one... the media still recalls that "December Hurricane" every year, even if it was only a small category 1.

Ah well, boring is good, disaster wise. It's a bit worrying how flat Denmark is and how the oceans are expected to rise. Now that has potential to break up the boredom.

Anyway, good to hear nothing bad happened. I'd probably freak out since I've never been in a real disater before.

I live in Idaho where I lived through one of the most violent earthquakes ever recorded in the Contenental US, 8.6 on the scale.

Hawaii, LOL!! There's a large chunk of Hawaii that is going to break off, causing what will be a disaster of Biblical porportions, a tsunami that will hit at 1000 mph and wash out everything from SF to the tip of South America.

Move inland, folks. I truly hope I don't have to mourn you.

edit: Oh, yeah, another doom-and-gloom prediction. The super volcano that is Yellowstone is overdue to blow and when it does, depending on wind direction, the land for hundreds of miles away will be buried under 10 feet of ash. Denver will be the mile and 10 feet city.

Thus be the predictions of Ar Kain Stormcrow.

Having been a Californian stationed at a California post in the Army, when we got hit with a 6.7, I barely bothered to get out bed after opening one eye to gauge how much the pictures on the wall were rattling. But get up I did to grab a cup of coffee. When the (much lighter) aftershock hit, I happened to glance out the window maybe 2 seconds later to see a sergeant I knew come bolting out of his quarters like he was on fire. Poor guy was from nice stable New Jersey and was reduced to hyperventilating in the exact center of the parking lot. I thought about making something up about large asphalt pads over soft soil being the worst place to be in an earthquake, but he was scared enough already.

Oh my goodness, I know. Satelite maps. Scary stuff. Place has been on a slow boil for centuries, but it's obvious when you look at the surroundings that it *has* erupted in places, before. When that goes, I think we'll be some new creature's dead-dinosaur oils.

Now see, earthquakes, volcanoes, mudslides, hurricanes - wouldn't it be best if Cryptic and NCSoft moved their offices to Kansas City? Tornadoes rarely surprise - just go down and play the Playstation for an hour. Easy peesy. And $200k will buy you a heck of a house. (That's BUY, not act as a 20% down payment.)

I remember my first (only) earthquake. Living in Wisconsin we don't get many. I was playing video games when suddenly the house shaked, similiar to really bad winds (which is what I thought it was). Next day I heard about a minor Earthquake in Illinious (sp).

Was anything damaged?

I was in an earthquake here in Michigan of all place, back in..I think '85. My wife (then) and I were in a big mall, and things shook a little. My first though was "Man, that must've been a big truck going by..." because big trucks shook our little apartment some. Then I realized I was in a huge concrete mall that no truck was going to shake. Read about it in the paper later, I believe epicenter was in Indiana.

Of course, Californians probably wouldn't even have noticed it.

EDIT: Looked it up. Apparently it was '83, and centered in NY state...

Dec out.
