Hmm... I heard the game was just "meh", what's the source of the discontent?

The hype I fear.

Richard Garriott's newest title promises to break the MMO mold and chart a new direction for the future of gaming!

It's a game. There is some new stuff but honestly, I don't think the tech exists yet to do what the hype promised.

Bingo - people are expecting something... groundbreaking, and they are not truly getting it.

I have been in the Beta for a while and seen lots of changes, I just couldn't see myself playing for long - it is fun and can be engaging, but for me there is something missing.. and I am not sure what that something is.

If the all access multi pass doohickey comes to fruition, I'll play TR. It's a fun diversion from CoX. But I can't see dropping CoX for TR. Maybe, in a couple years, TR will have grown enough to have all that they wanted. But for now, my heart stays in Paragon/Rogue Isles.

Yep. Exactly how I feel after playing TR since Feb. A good game, but not good enough to tear me away from CoX.

Frankly ... They wasted a lot of potential in TR.

After you play for a week you've seen all you need to see.

Heh, I've been there since last November. I honestly thought launch would be pushed back a couple of months. But, I've been told by others that having it released before Christmas might be a deciding factor. Especially if they plan to keep adding things.

I hope the buff netguns back up a tad, or at least go a little easier on the whole immunity crap. What is immune to an electrified net? Nothing.

Aye. Played for about 2.5 months. Just didn't get the feeling I get when I first played CoX or currently when I play CoX.

I was really really really pulling for TR also. I wanted a Sci-Fi MMO, but I just couldn't get into it.

Cheers!

The more I think about that, especially how the sharing of revenue with third party developers needs to be negotiated... the more I believe that CoH/V will never be included in an all-access NCSoft pass. Putting myself in Cryptic's shoes:

Cryptic: "Wait, you're going to collect less money per game overall, give us a proportional share of it compared to Lineage, and we're suppose to hope that an increase in volume as players flock to this Great Idea will make up for the reduced income per player?... We'll get back to you on that..."

That would be a very dicey deal for Cryptic, they'd have to bet that the all-access pass will draw and retain *a lot* more customers and that compared to the other NCSoft games, they'll compete well against them for the proportional share of the customers.

If this was ever going to come to pass it should have been done when Korean servers were up and there was the hope that even a tiny sliver of the Korean Lineage players would hop onto CoH occasionally. That moment is gone.

Less TR please, more HEROES! and Villainous stuff!

As for the Devs, Issue 11 has them all chained to their desks, sorry!

Edit: typo, sorry.

Yeah, admittedly I haven't been in beta (closed or open either one) half as long as Athyna...but really, in a lot of ways? It's running around with guns, grinding by shooting bugs, and zapping things with your magic--excuse me, Logos--powers. Been done, heck, I was in a game like that for too long...called Star Wars Galaxies. Don't get me wrong, I see possibilities with it, but really I don't see much 'new' here. The Logos system is even a retread of lots of other games, instead of going around killing monsters to fuel your magic powers (hey, at least I've stopped calling them Jedi powers), you're going to these 'shrines' and copying 'logos' into your 'tabula'. Really, I fail to see the 'breaking the MMO mold' or the 'new direction'...it's fun where it's not totally frustrating, but new? Not really. Heck, there's even the tanker/healer/buffer/DPS system in the character classes.

Ah well. Anyway. Put me in the camp of preferring to have the devs working on CoX instead of posting, if it comes to a choice

I've wondered for a while if I would've liked SWG a lot more had it been an original setting rather than a Star Wars title. I may have to try TR out just to see.

Also, does anyone else recall way, way back when that Tabula Rasa was going to be far more "sandbox" like? I vaguely recall some sort of hype about virtual societies and extremely non-directed gameplay... and then it sounds like they scrapped all that and went for this FPS/MMO hybrid. Did I just hallucinate that version of TR..?

EDIT: Sorry, Lighthouse -- missed your missive. Erm... so, how 'bout them Defenders, huh?

Sorry Lighthouse. Last answer, I promise.

Yesh, they did. They had a setting, then completely scrapped it and started over from scratch, including some of the team.

Ok, but I can't talk about Issue 11 or beyond... but that's pretty much what you guys WANT me to talk about so we are at an impass.

Umm.. I'm happy to wait for any information on future issues.

I want to know,

Why you guys won't fix: MoG, Energy Aura, Consume, Fire Manipulation.

I eagerly await your response and appreciate your willingness to talk about anything other than Issue 11 and beyond!

Consume hasn't gotten fixed yet because they were busy looking to see how well Fiery Aura did after the Healing Flames buff, although I think you can still argue for improvements.

Fire Manipulation can't be fixed by anything short of swapping out several powers, something that the devs absolutely hate to do because it tends to screw up people's existing builds. Every time you see a /Fire blaster stubbornly insisting on using Blazing Aura or Burn, they're the reason /Fire will never get fixed.

The other two, beats me. Castle said he knows EA has issues, but I guess MoG is considered balanced based on the rest of the set being awesome. Really, I don't think Regen users get to complain about anything; a bajillion nerfs later, and it's STILL really good.

Sure.

Don't play the "bonus". They payouts are horrid vs. the actual odds of pulling one of those hands.

Build up a good rapport with the other players. If everyone is friendly (and you have a full table) you can ask who has the bug. If no one fesses up, it's pretty good odds that the dealer has it. If that's the case be prepared for the flush or straight in the high hand (which usually means a very weak low hand). Get your low hand as good as possible even if it means sacrificing your high hand to do it (like splitting up two low pairs).

Don't drink. You will make bad decisions.

If you are stumped how to play a hand, ask the dealer how the house would play it. The house will ALWAYS play a hand the mathematically best way to play it, since they want to keep their edge. The dealers will always tell you how the house would play that hand, as well.

If you have the bankroll and want some more excitement, bank a hand. You can win big, or lose big. Just be sure to bet the minimum on the hand before you bank (the house will match your previous bet to play against you).

If the dealer starts crushing you over and over with monster hands... get up and walk away. Don't keep raising your bet because you are "due" to get a winning hand eventually.

Don't go thinking that your casino rewards card is getting a lot of points playing hours and hours of Pai Gow. PG poker is, I believe, the least effective time/rewards of all casino games because there are so many pushes and the game takes forever to deal a hand.

Now, back to the design grind... anyone know a good way to pick a handcuff with a mechanical pencil, a Hero Clix, and a poker chip?
