Regarding the Admin Channel For Invasion Messages
Personally, I think the messages are fine as is

The big deal is simple:
An online game where chat is broken, is not much of an online game.
The unfilterable red admin spam breaks chat.
It reminds me of AC2, and their frequently broken chat server. It pretty much strangled that game in the crib.

Drama queen much, are we? There were 3 lines for each zone being invaded (that is 3 times over the course of 20 or so minutes). Even when zones were invaded overlapping in both Paragon City and the Rogue Islands at the same time that did not amount to more than one line of admin message every several minutes...
Yes, the message showing up in all chat windows was perhaps slightly overkill, but in all honesty, had the developers not done that the boards would have been full instead with people whining that they were caught unawares by an invasion and were killed by it.
I suppose they could plaster the warning messages screenwide over the game window in flashing red and yellow letters (to emulate how pervasive air raid warnings would be in reality) and keep the sirens running throughout the entire event...

I didnt see much of a problem with it myself BUT I think if they just cut out the warnings for a hero side invasion for villains, and vill side warnings for heroes it would calm alot of people down.

Just wanted to add my vote to the "it's fine the way it is" tally.

your absolutely right. if the devs did not use admin chat to let folks know when zones were being invaded these same people would have came on here whining about not knowing when or complained when they got attacked and died. everyone on here keep giving these extreme examples like they were true.
Let the administrators stop sending messeges, The crying will increase because all of you huddled under atlas will have no warnings.
Then you will complain about getting swarmed by Ritiki.
[ QUOTE ]
Personally, I really never understood why the Rikti invasion announcements needed to be made global. I'm in St. Martial, running missions. Do I really give a hoot if Mercy Island is being invaded? No, not really.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah but that badge hunter searching for the accolade or that person who enjoys taking part in defending against the invasion does.
No, the game doesn't revolve around your personal wants and desires.
He paid his money to be entertained, not bombarded with false admin warnings which are really only event warnings. Not everyone has to participate in PvP. Not everyone gets messages about Giant Monsters. You can opt out of ever joining a Super Group. The point is everyone has paid money to be entertained. For many people the admin warnings of the rikti invasion are an intrusion to their experience. Giving a person no ability to prevent the rikti warning from plastering their chat window was poor design in my opinion.

There are plenty of clues the rikti invasion is happening while on the map the rikti are invading, before a single message ever appears. The purpose of the warnings was for people in other zones to know where the invasion is occuring and come join if they wanted to.
I understand the chat channels are full. But they still could have invested a few hours to maybe putting these warnings in a different color or italics or something to differentiate these messages from the actual Admin Warnings about Servers shutting down.
It should have at least been fixed before they started it up again on special days.

[/ QUOTE ]
The original purpose to the warnings was almost certainly to warn people in the zone that an invasion was imminent, because the warning signs would not be recognized by players who were not intimately familiar with the invasion design (in other words, *most* players), and because originally players were not debt-protected during them.

Putting this is SYSTEM guarantees it will be buried and those who want to see it and aren't lucky enough to be in the zone WILL miss it.
For example, every time a critter is defeated by you, your teammate, anyone in your vicinity there is a system message. Among other system messages. Try spotting invasion messages in THAT.
(There is a reason I don't even have system on my primary windows, and instead have it on another tab with "combat stuff". I tried adding it in preparation for the upcoming change that is on test just to see what it would be like and promptly removed it again within minutes.)
I understand the complaints of the people who don't like it being in ADMIN, even if I don't agree with them, there are enough of them that clearly there needs to be an adjustment to how this is handled.
This is a bad fix. Try another channel. Add another channel (yes, yes, I've heard you can't for programming reasons). Give us a sixth global channel then, and give the admin system speaker only priviliges. Something! This defeats the purpose.
Late Saturday night, when server population was low, I was only able to find one other player to help me defend Founders Falls against the Invasion. We both came to the zone for the event. Founders had two people in the zone at the time, one went into University, the other left the zone. (The resulting fight made for some interesting screenshots)
Don't turn Invasions into nonevents by making it impossible for those of us who want to come to know it's happening.

IMO, the best fix would be to remake the Friends channel into an Events channel. This has been suggested before, I believe. I have, literally, seen the Friends channel used twice in 3 years. I think this would nicely solve the problem.

There are systems in place to have civilians chat about something you or another character did. Could they be used to mention the invasion? For instance, what if the civilians would say things like "Kings Row is being invaded! Run for your life!"
that sounds interesting. Personally I would stick with the old simple broadcast over all channels in the red admin /vanguard, or call it civil defense. but definately would rather see that than miss it.

Honestly, why the hell complicate things, why not just put a tab flag or option to turn on or off Admin announcements? You can do it for opposing side chat already.

So true. You need to put it in a much LOWER used channel than that. I agree with the "Friends" one, that's in orange so it'll show up.
Keep it in admin and put admin in one window not all of them, would be better, or put it in something lower traffic. We don't want to miss the invasions when they get rare and new characters need Watchman accolades.

A very good illustration IMHO. So, the devs ran out of channels huh? Bad design on their part but we gotta shoulder the burden?
They want us to team...want us to team so badly that a whole lot of QoL things can't be done without another person...but then they make talking to other players a pain during an Invasion? Bad design on their part.
I'm in Atlas on my shiny new lvl 2 whatever (remember the alts that they say we should make?) and an invasion frakking red-side (NO bearing on my heroic toons WHATSOEVER!) is interfering with my efforts to gather a team? Bad design.
When Invasions was first announced a bunch of people said that they didn't like it and didn't want to participate. The devs said that getting under cover or indoors avoided the attacks. However trying to carry on a conversation while waiting out the attack is impossible unles your chat window is 3/4 the height of your screen. Yeah, sometimes I don't want to participate but I don't have a choice.
To put it in perspective try talking to your friends sitting near you while someone periodically blasts an air horn at all of you. Yeah...that gets annoying quick doesn't it?
"Comics, you're not a Mastermind...you're an Overlord!"
I agree that the system channel seems to be an extremely poor choice for the reasons Steel Magnolia layed out.
Honestly, I like the idea of recomissioning the Friends channel. Can the devs pull any stats on how many people actually use it? I haven't touched it since Global was added. Despire the fact that I add it to every tab in which I expect to recieve "chat" messages, I haven't gotten anything on it in literally years.
Blue
American Steele: 50 BS/Inv
Nightfall: 50 DDD
Sable Slayer: 50 DM/Rgn
Fortune's Shadow: 50 Dark/Psi
WinterStrike: 47 Ice/Dev
Quantum Well: 43 Inv/EM
Twilit Destiny: 43 MA/DA
Red
Shadowslip: 50 DDC
Final Rest: 50 MA/Rgn
Abyssal Frost: 50 Ice/Dark
Golden Ember: 50 SM/FA
I would like to see several changes to incorporate the world events.
1) Event Channel - Channel that can be added to any tab the player wishes. Event Channel remain global so people willing to switch to an alt on the other side for an invasion can be alerted. Add the event channel by default to any new characters made just like the help channel is added. Event Channel should be read only, any messages sent by players to the event channel should just be discarded.
2) On screen message - Like the badeg/level up message, something that quickly flashes on the screen can be general "World Event" or specific "Rikti Invasion". On screen message should not show for oposing side invasions, heroes only see heroe warnings and villains see villain warnings.
3) Zone Highlighting - On the map of the city, mark the zones with currently active zone events (highlight in a red). Players wouldn't have to add the event channel, just open the city map and look for the zone being attacked. May think of including active fires in steel, troll raves in skyway, and the eochai/jack show down in croatoa as events that cause a zone to highlight. The eochai/jack maybe not since they are not actually terrorizing the city, but the other two have a police presence when they occur, so would make since for them to solicit help by flagging the zone on the map.
[ QUOTE ]
Personally, I think they should take the 'friends' channel that I've never seen anyone actually use past the first week of the game's release and remake it into an 'events' channel.

I don't know what your problem is, but for me they only appear in the upper chat box, if it annoys ppl so much it isn't hard to change your chat windows channels.
That's because they changed the Alerts from the Admin channel to the System channel....which we the players have control over in what windows we want it to appear in unlike Admin that is defaulted to every window[since those playing before maintence can't whine 'Why did I get kick?!'] and have no control over
I for one don't like the new change. I was perfectly happy with it on the Admin channel. I could look for the red text & hop the train for the next wave. Now the Vanguard channel is the same green as most text and I can't find it. I can't vind the Vanguard channedl to add, don't know how to change it to a more easy to observe color. I use the Friends channel, but wouldn't mind vanguard sharing it and being in gradiated orange. I could at least see it then & know where to run. Plus I don't know how to add it to a tab as there doesn't seem to be a vanguard tab. It seems I have to be on the Help tab if I want to see it & I can no longer tell, as it doesn't seem to populate inside missions.
Of course, I want to hunt the spawns while they last. Others who don't may like this change, but it makes it hard to drop everything & run for it when a wave starts.
My vote is just to give me the ability to turn off the messages in the "chat" window. I am fine with it being in the "global" window, but I like my chat window to only display team, supergroup and pm messages.
I have been playing that way since CoH beta and I like it that way. If I want to know anything more than my immediate gameplay communication, I look up into the Global window and there's the rest of what is going on. This to me makes sense. The admin spams in my chat window are forced on me in a way that I cannot work around it. And /ignore Admin doesn't work, I tried it.
Hence my vote for giving me the ability to turn it off in the main chat window and I am good with everything else.
Anyway, my 2 cents worth...
