Cryptic coolness

Hmm. Some animation-prodigy needs to do the Thriller dance on this CrypticAR rig thing. Then we can finally give the Banished Pantheon something to do in Dark Astoria.
[/ QUOTE ]
That would be freaking HILARIOUS.
"Ooo! A little fight in you! I like that..."
"Then you're going to love me."
I can actually see this taking off a bit. There were numerous people who did animations and models for Freedom Force, and I think this game is way more popular than that ever was.

I'm all for community created things but without a tremendous ammount of oversight the likes of which you would be totally unable to do you would just be asking for trouble.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's basically what he's describing. Players generating animations and submitting it for conversion to something they'd use in the future. If we can't do power customization then there'd be no way we could have some kind of open system like you seem to think he's suggesting.
[/ QUOTE ]
Will someone review each individual animation or will it be automated? I understood what he was saying just not the level of oversight and control that would be implemented.
[/ QUOTE ]
He said IF they saw cool things they COULD include them in-game as emotes. That's selective review, no matter how you look at it.
Other MMO's have learned from the SL-related content/continuity issues as well. Pirates of the Burning Sea (still in beta) has a process for submitting flags, sails, ships (and I believe, in a while, to include hilts & jewelry). Everything submitted is voted on by the community. Only those items with a sufficient score and sufficient votes are reviewed by the devs. They retain final veto power.
So, I'd say they're not planning such an open inclusion system at all, compared to SL... but the potential is still incredible

Yes, folks, get going on the new player animations. >_>
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.
Oooo...
... someone get working on the proposed travel emotes!

Awesome..Wonder if people will be able to use this to design costume parts? I have 3DS max training, albeit a few years out of date.

Oh and I was kinda expecting that this tool was pretty much for MUO only

I think its a great idea especially with oversight. I like the badge idea - maybe even a special ostume option (feather in ones cap so to speak)

Just as a warning, the devs have to be somewhat careful about rewards. Many "volunteer" programs got shut down a few years ago when the IRS started monetizing the "rewards" given to the volunteers. You have to be very careful on what you give back or how you recognize contributors.
If you let the players start animating it will mean just one thing: Hello Kitty skins on everything.

The difference is that in FF, it was very likely your animation would be used (and by many). In COH, more likely than not, no one but you will see the animation, as its probably not going to be put into the game.

Right - no guarantees. But it MIGHT be used - sometimes that's more than enough motivation, especially for artistic types.

If anyone can get this to work with the slightly older 3ds7 for me, I WILL do this. After all, I have not invested over 30 years in comics, 20 years Gamemastering super heroes, and 6 years in digital graphics to not attempt to be a part of this. If I lived near Cryptic I would have been bugging them daily for a job as it is. Jay and I could play blackjack under his desk while Positron oohs and ahhs over our uber-sexy designs.

Ok, I tried to skim though this and I have to admit I got a little confused.
If someone can bottomline this for me, I would be helpful:
What program can be used to make "COX-style" models and animations and that could possibly imported to Cryptic themselves?

None at the moment.
The CrypticAR is (I'm guessing) mostly used for Marvel Universe Online; however, Back Alley Brawler said that if the community did something really awesome there might be a way for the devs to translate what was done in CrypticAR to CoH/CoV.

Well, I just got 3D9 installed and got the CrypticAR installed and good freaking lord. I have no idea what I'm doing, but moving the parts around and just tinkering with the stuff is a ton of fun. I'm going to run through some of the tutorials and try and get some more know how on the stuff. I've used AutoCAD and modeled in 3D before for some engineering projects, so hopefully that experience will help in some way with this
Haha, I was actually thinking of doing some AS animations now that people brought it up. I had a vision for Claws where both arms are outstretched behind their body and they bring them both together at the same time and stab upward for their AS.
For Dark I had pictured a sort of ninja-esque pose where they have their left palm against the lower back of their target while crouching down with their right leg stretched back to brace them. Their left leg would be holding them up with the knee bent and their head would be looking down as they had their right hand up to their mouth in a sort of "gun" pose to show them "chanting" I guess? and then you'd see the AS landing animation with the skulls and blackness.
Hehe, sorry, it's hard to try and explain it, but if I can ever figure this out, I'll def post some pics. They've got some cool stuff on the forums already over on the CrypticAR site.

Just a quick head's up about the new CrypticAR rig. This is not the rig we use for CoX.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well that's mighty odd... where did this come from, then? Is it a tool being used on something we don't yet know about? There's a missing piece there...
[ QUOTE ]
I submit my 1st born to the one who makes new AS animations.

Well, at least you didn't just say "SS"
Very cool rig BTW. **/IK switching, full hand controls (with export and import), body scaling, and squash stretch controls. Daddy likes!
So if this isn't the rig used in CoX, any chance of you guys releasing that rig? Even if it's not as cool as this rig, that would make user created animations easier to integrate wouldn't it? Or if not maybe some guidelines for compatibility with the CoX rig... ie: which bones don't have a corisponding CoX rig bone, don't use squash/stretch, that kind of stuff, so we know not to bother animating somthing that would just get stripped out in the conversion anyway.
User generated content (of various sorts) is a clear winner for the MMO environment and such an obvious solution to the insatiable thirst for content I'm surprised it hasn't already been done.
Good to see Cryptic sticking a toe in the water.
