One person starts a thread asking why Statesman's in-game character is grouchy and Jack posts 'Because I'm grouchy'.

If someone hits notify moderator at the bottom of the post , it gets deleted in a few hours .

[/ QUOTE ]

I have known people to claim to report posts they disliked, which did not violate rules, and those posts have remained (good for the mods).

Not every would be forum cop gets his teensy au-thor-it-tay respected when he tries to swagger it.

Clicking the report button is not an automatic delete. People who post "I've said my say so let this thread die now" are often ignored.

After the recent debacle of Sovran and some other issues... I'm really starting to question the even-handedness of the moderation here. Whether that is Lighthouse or the other mods... It's been irking me.

People going around filters, cursing out other players, or just being general jerks... and what do you see at the bottom of their post? Edited by Moderator3. The post could be in clear violation of 2-3 forum rules and guidelines and they get edited? Every one of Sovran's posts in the naked thread were flagged to the mods, they remained, even when other replies were deleted. Cricket had to be PMed to take care of Sovran's responses in the naked thread, and it was obvious to her that they should have been removed... but apparently not to any of the other moderators that went through that thread.

As for me... someone necroposted and deleted a reply in a two year old thread of Statesman's. I post in the thread to lock it and flag my post. Guess what happens to my reply? Deleted. Thread remains at the top of the forum because it has recently been replied to and thus, continues to get new replies. This goes on for a day. I finally post, explaining to the mods that deleting does no good, that the post will remain at the top. The entire thread, Statesman responses and all, disappears.

That thread with the insult in French? Flagged the OP and flagged my response that the OP was using another language to bypass the filter. It apparently took forever for anything to be done, though it sounds like my responses were deleted. I didn't see any of this happen.

Moderating has been uneven. That is my issue. Lighthouse, I would think, should be attempting to set the standards for what problems need what responses. It doesn't seem to be happening. I've heard of people getting PM warnings for far less (heck, even questionable if they were doing anything wrong at all) than other people that don't get in the slightest bit of trouble.

One bad reply in a thread? Delete the bad reply.
Thread plummets into bashing and rudeness? Lock.
Off-topic, double-posted, and/or ranting thread? Lock or delete.

Come on... this is Modding 101.

Let people crack jokes. Let people have fun. Nip it in the bud if it gets too out of control, but if it's just people being a little bit silly, not breaking any rules other than being a bit off-topic, is there really anything wrong with that?

It's about the fact that some posts containing personal attacks and profanity and/or clearly confrontational, provocative trolling are left unmolested while posts containing relatively harmless commentary is smacked.

[/ QUOTE ] Your going to have to show an example of this , because I haven't seen any thread get deleted unless posts were off topic or flames. This forum has 10,000 posts a day , you can't possibly read all of them.

If someone hits notify moderator at the bottom of the post , it gets deleted in a few hours .

[/ QUOTE ]
No, no it doesn't. The posts by Sovran took days, even after all the posts having the notify button hit, and a special request to Cricket to finally get them deleted.

So no, hitting notify moderators doesn't always get anything done, even if the reported post is BLATENTLY breaking rules.

Also, the fact that CuppaJo did not hold herself aloof and act solely as a traffic cop was not a flaw.

I agree that Cuppa's involvement in the community was a good thing. I also dont agree in the slightest that Lighthouse is acting solely as a traffic cop if you were implying that.

We're getting much superior response to bug report threads on the forum than I've observed previously, and Lighthouse has posted a number of non-traffic cop posts in his time here.

CuppaJo => in Austin

It does make a difference.

The reason some replies are deleted along with ones that don't look to be harmful is because any reply "chained" from that deleted one is deleted also unless you reply differently. Thats why harmless posts are sometimes wiped when a forum breaking post gets wiped.

I figured everyone knew that by now...

Definetly. I think whoever decided that some of the NCSoft community people should be on sight at Cryptic's office's had a very good idea.

Its a lot easier to wander down the hall and say "Bob, whats up with this bug we're hearing about on the forums" than it is to talk to Bob on the phone from hundred's of miles away, and possibly a time zone or two away. I'm not up on my American time zones, but I'm guessing Austin is an hour or two ahead of Los Gatos.

Lighthouse is here to do a job. Being your friend is optional.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is important. What is his job? People seem to think his job is "forum moderator". Is it? I was to the understanding that his job was more than just the cheif moderator.

I was to the understanding that his job was to organize and hold together the City of Heroes community. There is more to this than just forum moderation. In game activities are part of this. Contests are part of this. People stay with a game in many cases because of the community and social environment that it brings, and his job is to keep that community together.

Can he do THAT without being friendly?

Zeus - god of differences

[/ QUOTE ]

All good points.

Also, this post and your previous post are pretty close to my own observation - I do think some random out-of-control deletions did happen after Cuppa left, which was when people started noticing things, but the forum was probably undermoderated otherwise.

I think "Lighthouse & Friends" (Good name, huh?) are doing a fine job.

Granted, I've disagreed twice on the Mods choice of thread deletion, although, side from that, there's not one mistake I've seen them make (concerning moderation).

All the closed threads have been a load of nuts and bolts.

It only takes one exception to disprove all, yes?

Miss_Kitty's followup "the tails are clipping" thread. The first thread got out of hand, got locked, Kitty started a second one, it did not get out of hand...it got locked.

Creating new threads when the original gets locked is against forum rules. Sorry.

Except Lighthouse himself explained I could remake the thread if I kept it civil. I did.. it got locked anyway.

I think that he means the more common usage of Godwin's law, at least, the more common one that I have seen used, that states that as soon as Godwin's Law is true, the argument is automatically lost by the one who causes it to be true.
