Free respec for i8?

Do we know if we will get a free respec with i8?

The only thing worse than devs making bad decisions is the hoard of fanboys and bootlickers that keep cheering them on.

No, there's generally only one if they make major changes to powersets.

Unsuprisingly, with a free respec coming with the last few issues people will get used to it. The I7 one was technically for the two year CoH anniversary.

And it looks like I8 will likely hit around the one year CoV anniversary. I'd be suprised if there wasn't a free respec with I8, or slightly afterward.

Thus creating more of a "We get a respec every issue" perception and giving rise to more "Do we know if we get a respec with Issue MCMLXIX?" threads.

Personally, I'd NOT issue a respec just to try breaking the issue = respec stranglehold. They've said they don't want to get into that, so it might be time to run with that theory.

For I7, they pretty much admitted that they do a free respec with every issue (no matter what reason they gave originally for the free respecs from I3-I6), so I'd put money on a free respec in I8.

Yeah, I was a little dissapointed with the whole "free respec every issue" idea too... it's always bad when people get expectations of free stuff, because then it isn't appreciated.

But they've pretty much decided on it at this point, giving respecs when there have been no major changes. So... at this point, I'd expect one, but like others... not really appreciate it.

Zeus - god of expectation leading to a lack of appreciation

Don't count on it. There might be something from the veteran rewards tho.

/respecs are a dangling-carrot that keeps long-time Players playing their old-borked characters which are messed up from improper builds. It costs them nothing to place the code in, doesn't 'imbalance' the game because someone OOCly made a bad build-decision before they reached their 20s, and is a cheap way to ensure longevity with some toons that would otherwise sit at the Selection Menu and collect dust.

Player Attrition is the death of any MMOGs, and anyone who has been here awhile can plainly see that Co* is not immuned to the problem. Slowing that rate down, even a little bit, means a healthier Player community and longer active-subscriptions. I vote/expect that we will see a continued use of this option for things such as Issue updates.

If not a freespec I imagine we'll at least get a free costume token with the addition of wings and trenchcoats, and Jay-knows what else....

Posted

I doubt there will be a freespec this issue for the masses. But there has been hints that one of the vet. rewards might be a respec. So that's probably what we'll get.

"They'll give respecs when there are major changes." OK, define the difference between 'major' changes and 'minor'.

Posi said that they're looking to fix Team TP. If it's truly fixed, then all those people who respecked out of it because of how borked it was will want to respec back into it. Also, fly has been upgraded. Etc....

As the powers and mechanics are fixed, changed, tweaked, and added, there will always be a valid reason to give out a free respec with every issue.

And if they moved free respecs to a *recurring* veteran reward (e.g., available at 9 months, 15 months, 21 months, etc...), then you'd wind up with practically the same thing: a constant supply of respecs to keep up with the constantly changing and growing powers and mechanics.

At this point I would say if there is something in the Vet rewards that changes how toons perform, more then likely there will be a free respec.

Oh free costume tokens are just about guaranteed. They've been giving those out like candy lately.

Yeah the cat is pretty much outta the bag on free respecs now. Agree or disagree, like or dislike, appreaciate or not appreciate, I think they are pretty much the norm now.

So far, everything we've heard, even the Temp Powers (like Perm Nemesis staff) would lead me to believe there's nothing there (other than the Vet Reward issued respec)...

Heh. Except we've barely heard ANYTHING. I for one have a feeling that we've barely tipped the iceberg on the vet rewards. We're not even sure what positron said in that interview holds anymore.

Except that most of the stuff from the rewards is probably just going to be fluff. They arn't going to drasticly effect how you perform. The temp powers will more then likely be "ooo I have a staff yay! Oh it dosnt really do much then look cool."

The other day the American Society for Microbiology sent me a free insulated lunchbox thing, y'know, the canvas kind. I think it's a nice one, too. Out of the blue. I didn't renew my subscription. I hadn't submitted an abstract for anything. I just came home and there was a box with a free lunchbox with their logo stenciled on the side.

By the above logic, I wouldn't have appreciated it because it was free. In fact, I appreciated it quite a bit. I thought it was very nice for them to send me this little bonus doohickey for no reason other than I was a member. Not even an expensive member. I pay grad student dues. I'm more disposed to renew my subscription now than I was before because they sent me this little free whatchit.

I guess the bottom line here is that It was never written in stone that a free respec goes along with every issue release. However, they seem to be in the habit of giving them out with new issues.

So while it is a definite possibility, Nobody knows for sure if it's going to happen until one of they devs or Cricket or someone like that lets us know.

And so the answer to the OP is: I dunno. Maybe.

I don't get it. How do people burn through three earned Respecs and all their free ones?

I've never done a Respec on most of my characters. My Controller just hit 43 and hasn't done a single one, free or otherwise. I've used several free respecs on characters that were impacted by the changes in certain issues. (I'm looking at you, ED!) I've only used one earned Respec on one character.

I can see how sometimes you could Respec into something bad and need to Respec again to fix it, but hey, that's what the test server is for. How are people breaking things so badly they need to Respec this often? Is it a Min/Max thing? Maybe that's why I don't care about them. I don't pay enough attention to the numbers to know if I'm "borked."
