  1. Ultimo's first appearance was over forty years ago
  2. [ QUOTE ]
I've been stuck with "Ultimo." since I first started playing because somewhere there's an "Ultimo". If that character is on an inactive account (which seems to be the case), it would sure be nice to have the chance to get rid of that period. Of course, if he's L7+ I won't have that chance anyway, but one never knows.

    [/ QUOTE ]
You may find the actual problem to be that there is a Marvel Comics supervillain named Ultimo.

Below level 6? How many names is that expected to free up?

    [/ QUOTE ]
All the names that were being camped by level 1 placeholders.
  4. YAR YAR HUMP HUMP should be one of the preset function keys.
  5. My problem with the way that Arcana's argument works is that it's like Zeno's dichotomy paradox, except with buffs. While it sounds great that each buffer decreases incoming damage by the same amount in relative terms, the reality is that after a certain point the absolute contribution by the next defender added just isn't worth the time.

Take the hypothetical 50% defense buffers. The first buffer will drop incoming damage by half, and so will the second, and so will the third, and by the third you're already at 87.5% damage mitigation, which is pretty super. Bringing in a fourth will raise that another 6%; a fifth will raise that another 3%, and so forth.

In reality, though, while each of those latter additions is still stopping 50% of the damage that would have penetrated in their absence, the actual threat is relatively fixed. When you add a new teammate, the opposition simply doesn't ramp massively, so there isn't a huge operational difference between stopping ~93% incoming damage and stopping ~96% incoming damage, even though one lets through twice as much damage at the other. For nearly any circumstance I can imagine in the game we all play, no one is going to care about taking 3% less damage when looking for teammates. Even the 6% is pretty questionable.

As a consequence, it's still not going to be in your favor regardless to try and keep pushing in more defensive buffers after some point. You'd hit an effective ceiling if not an actual cap and look to build teams where you're getting the least combinatorial inhibition, and that'll be made worse by the fact that the buff recipient's own powers count against the diminishing returns.

I kinda feel the same way about the debuff resistance loosening the devs did on the AVs. Sure, they tripled how well resisted debuffs do against AVs... but tripling is a relative term, and we're still only getting 15% of nominal debuff value against an AV. It's better, but it's sure not woohoohoo better. The relative improvement makes for nice marketing but the absolute value is still a bit of a downer.

don't hold your breath expecting drop rate changes for anything mere days after the issue goes live.

    I hate you Devs

So I was curious as to what made this different.

    Because it was fun?

First, all of those games mentioned have healthy, strong MOD communities which constantly churn out new maps, weaponry, and options. None of them are remotely the same as they were the day they were released, and most of the modifications come from fans who donated their time to create/alter content.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I have always wondered why MMORPGs did not try harder to develop ways for fan-based content to be published. Players on this forum have asked numerous times for the ability to design missions, and even given certain constraints to avoid "freebie" designs that gave too much reward for the risk, it sure seems like players would happily generate content for each other.

I fully realize that such a system would still have costs - developers would have to review content before publishing, which is no small task - but I still wonder if, ultimately, this would be a better use of the subscription dollars than doing all the content development centrally. (In a way, it's like the Cathedral vs. the Bazaar all over again.)

    Woa, Idea man!

    *Juggernaut*

One player is spawned into the PvP zone, every player in the zone is on the same team, and their goal is to defeat the player that is given super-AV level power.

Said player will have a timer of 5:00 minuntes to be Juggernaut, and it will pick at random, so as to not unfairly pick same person over and over.

If Juggernaut is defeated it will randomly attach to another player, and whoever defeats the Juggernaut will get some kind of really good reward, like bounty. Or something.

Since it will take more than one person to kill the juggernaut, they can make it so its like a monster. Give whichever team that does (10% right?) the rewards.

    That would be severely cool.

    Somebody must play Ogre

The Dev's should follow up on features that were promised, if they're not currently working 'as intended'. Examples would be base raids, power items, PvP and arena stability, etc.

    [/ QUOTE ]
After the reception the devs got when asking for testers for the arena bug fix just recently, they may not be super-psyched about catering to this particular crowd at the moment...

Now, if you have a real solution to dealing with "poo monkeys" I'm all ears.

Shutting them down within the limits of the game seems to work. There is nothing a bully fears more than a united front willing to fight back.

I have yet to see that really work. IME all it does is encourage them.

  15. In re Lord Raptor's comment on this bit of Golgamesh's post:

Challenger Technology - I would assume this is tribute to the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle that exploded on take-off with a civilian on board, Kristin McAuliffe (sp?), who was to be the first civilian in space.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I think this is actually wrong. Like other subzones in Terra Volta, Challenger Technology is named for a pulp hero, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Professor Challenger.

and b) Are the GMs in the Hive/Abyss going to be reworked so they're easier to kill? I ask that because, unless you have a Rad or two on the team spamming Lingering Radiation, GMs take forever to kill due to their high regen rate. Not many people will wanna beat on the GMs much more than the bare minimum it'll take to spawn Hamidon. Special inspiration be damned.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Rather than weakening the GMs, I'd like it if the devs spread regen debuffing into more Heroes powersets. The Villains have much more access to regeneration debuffing than the villains do, and it's not even just Corruptor-type sets that can do it.

It would especially be nice if it were the lower frequency Defender sets that got the regen debuff added - I'd like to see like Acid Arrow from Trick Arrow be regen-debuffing, for instance. TA can already do it with EMP Arrow, but 15 seconds of regen debuffing on a nuke-type recharge timer don't cut it.

Similarly, it'd be cool if Freezing Rain debuffed regen, too
  17. Vampire the Requiem is a pretty good system. It's a rework of the old Vampire the Masquerade. I like it all right.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind if you're going to start a Vampire game:

    1) World of Darkness campaigns are set in a world of monsters. It is not a nice place and it's not supposed to be. Moreover, like some other horror games, your vampire characters run the risk of insanity from their actions, which in this case takes the form of losing your humanity as you slide toward the monster.

    2) Vampire games are meant to be intensely political. There are a nice array of powers and many of them can be quite impressive toward the top end, but the game is really about the social politics of creatures that don't die of old age. They can get quite violent, but there will be quite a lot of behind the scenes manipulation and such. If a political game does not sound appealing, this may not be the best first step into tabletop gaming for you.

    3) This is purely opinion, but Vampire in particular seems to attract some of the most bizarre of gamers, and gamers in general are kind of odd people to begin with.
  18. Oftimes I leave out all the personal details and put down the most essential element of the character - sometimes, it feels more important to give the feel of the character than it is to give real specifics. Here's an example. While it tells you really nothing about the personal history of the character, it tells you basically what you need to know.

    A: Judas got banned? When?

Last week or the week before, I'm not sure offhand.

EDIT: It was somewhere around the 1st.

So, you're not saying he doesn't have the right to post about something cool, but you are reserving the right to sour it by dragging in your own historical nerf baggage from some other thread.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Where did you read in my post that he doesn't have the right to post? I said it in the very post you quoted he does have the right to post.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Read the highlighted portion of what I said carefully and observe that I in fact noted that you didn't say he couldn't post.

    [ QUOTE ]
You are just telling me not to post my opinion and in that you are wrong.

    [/ QUOTE ]
And you're wrong about what I'm saying for the third time in two posts.

You can write whatever sour grapes you want. No one is trying to shut you up to prevent your important message from reaching the masses so they too may know how grievously you have been wounded by the nerfs of yesteryear and how the bitterness has seeped into your soul and whatever other Nine Inch Nails lyrics might go along with that.

What I am saying is there's a time and a place. Just because the right to free speech means you can stand up in a wedding reception and drunkenly talk in front of the crowd about how the bride used to be your girl doesn't mean you should.

It just seems to me that instead of popping into a fun thread like this saying "nice going jackass now the devs will nerf me because of stuff you minmaxing hosers keep doing to me" and so forth, people make a new topic that says "I hate people that are still having fun" or whatever and go off in there.
