what is in a name?
Wyld Fyre is simply the first non taken spelling of Wildfire, who is a fairly faithful recreation of Jamie Smith, pyrokinetic commune girl and tech whiz who got pulled into a messy incident of a Dark Conspiracy game, one of the first RPGs I ever played. Technically should have been Fire/Devices, but I kept feeling guilty with that build's munchyness, so she became Fire/Energy
.Winternight is somewhat of an inside joke, Winternight is my local server and the character started as simply a mockup of an avatar for it.
Hmm...trying to think if anyone else is interesting...
Kagehoushi - Watch Flame of Recca
Cat5 - Essentially trying to design a Angelic Layer style angel, I hit upon the bad joke, though after several costume revisions, she doesn't even have the cat ears anymore
Mister Sandman is so named because he puts people to sleep.
Crashcart is what they call the thing they roll in when people are 'code blue' (i.e. dying)
I took American Maid because Liberty Belle was taken.
Through the magic of science, Patchworks was assembled from the remains of defeated Super Heroes and Villains in the quest to create the ultimate crime fighter. The differing origins of the body parts caused a mental breakdown and Patchworks was forced to repress his powers, except for his super strength, in order to remain functional. He still hears the voices of the past heroes and may talk to them at random times.
My character's full name is Sir Velkyn Do'N'Vashe, which translates into "the shadow of house N'Vashe" in Dark Elven.
I'm a DnD geek, can you tell?
Schwartzsturm was formerly a leading scientist and soldier in the Third Reich (Kroenen of Hellboy fame homage). He was so breathtakingly lethal and efficient he was dubbed "the Black Storm," or "die Schwartzsturm." Vanished during the war facing another superhuman, blah blah, joined the fight against crime for reasons unknown. Loathes the Council.
Sapphire Scarab, my Blue Beetle/Spider-Man tribute, takes his name from the relic that gives him his powers—a scarab formed from sapphire.
Madam Firefly = Madam Butterfly + Fire.
Sideburn (reserved for better facial hair options) just loves his 'chops. Enough said.
Thraxxus (reserved until I can find a Rad/anything build I like) is a named after a biological weapon developed during the Cold War. Radiation is the closest to disease, save the toxicity of Spines.
Dr. Manos (reserved until I can find a D3 build I like/bigass collars and such) is a tribute to mystic heroes like Dr. Fate or Dr. Strange. I named him after the worst film ever: Manos: Hands of Fate.
Dr. Zero (reserved until I can find an Ice/Anything build for any AT I like...and because I'm a bum who wants auras and I'm too lazy to work him to 30) is a nod to Mr. Freeze. Heavily armored, save for a frozen head surrounded by vapor.
Prof. Weisswald (retired) is a given name and title. Once the Golden Age superhero the Newtonian, he retired his Gravity Gauntlets years ago. After the devsastation of the Rikti War, he put his scientific mind to use and crafted a new set of Gravity Gauntlets and armor to protect his fragile, aged frame. Retired after a nasty encounter with the Clockwork.
Miss Komodo: Former assassin/martial artist villain with mutant claws. Seemed like a cool name
Cyberstar MD and Shade: Robots built by Cyberstar as prototypes, eventually they're models will be sold to police forces. MD is a healer model, Shade uses negative energy.
I have others, but most of my alts are based off power combos I want to try, and the names are pretty lame.
Umbryl: Well, the character was originally Shadowguard, but I didn't like the design, so deleted and started over, but I wanted to change the name, yet have it be somewhat similar. He's kind of a cross between mutant and magic, origin-wise, so I thought Umbryl fit.
Killer Antz: Killer = chest beating bravado; Antz = well, they're ants. An evolved, sapient ant colony that built themselves a cybernetic suit.
Ms. Moscow: Kind of Ms. Marvel/Power Girl-type from mother Russia. I don't play her often -- only when I want to tune my feminine side.
Baron Brimstone: Baron = he's royalty from some tiny European country; Brimstone = sounded good for a fire tanker. Plus, he's got a magic origin, so Brimstone seemed to fit.
...and several more that are just in the drawing-board phase.
Mad Gremlin: He is a gremlin, but he wasn't always a gremlin, so he is a little annoyed about it.
War Club: He uses a magical club of a warrior ancestor.
Adamanteus: An AI housed in an almost indestructible shell of adamanteum.
DarkHawke: Given a forced mutation by a medalion with a hawk-head symbol on it. Dark Melee is one of his power sets.
"Shut up Mr. Burton, you are not brought upon this world to get it!" - Lo Pan
@MadGremlin
Steele Magnolia - Taken from the character's given name, Hell Steele (yes, her mother didn't want and said her daughter looked like hell when she was born) and a reference to the nickname for Southern women who persevere despite terrible circumstances. The name also serves as a reference to the fact that she wears heavy metal armor, even though she's a blaster.
Simon-Says: Named for her powerful mental powers and her whimsical penchant for playing games.
2020 Vision: Named for the fact that he came from the year 2020, and a juxtapositional reference to the phrase "hindsight is 20/20 vision".
For the full story, see the RP Thread Whitmoore Apartments where I write for them (copiously).
Together we entered a city of strangers, we made it a city of friends, and we leave it a City of Heroes. - Sweet_Sarah

Governments have fallen to the power of social media. Gaming companies can too.
Although Slip's had many names, the one he uses today has some special meaning for him. His old mentor had chastised him for being careless. She said he couldn't just "run slipshod around the city." Though they had a falling out, he later took the apt description of himself and wore it proudly, to always remind him of the flaws he was trying to overcome.
Hippie Mage: Story reason - Hippie Mage didn't come up with his name himself. When he was starting out his hero career in Seattle, his rescuees had told the media that they had been saved by "some kind of hippie magician". After that, people began referring to him as the "Hippie Mage". The name stuck, and the mysterious magical hippie began using the name himself.
Real reason - When I was first trying to come up with a hero, a magical hippie was one of the first concepts that came to mind. Since I'm not very original, I just decided to call him "Hippie Mage". *Shrugs*
Techsupport: Techsupports' name was chosen two-way. It tied in nicely to his backstory, which ties in nicely to my RL job :/ Also it's a clever play on his Archetype and Origin. A Technology Defender... Support class, tech... etc
Cyclonite Cat: A Fire/Fire Blaster. She has nothing to do with the weather. I was inspired by a movie title called 'Detonator' (name taken). Then tried 'Blast Cap' and varieties (also taken). Then decided that I really wanted her name tied into an explosive. I came out on 'Cyclonite' one of the most popular explosives in WW2. Her backstory turned her into a university chemistry major, and given her powers, a 'nerdy' name suddenly fit well. Also, it alliterates like any proper comicbook superhero style name
D'20 Gladiator I took (with permission) from one of my favourite webcomics. And the why is really too long to explain.
Pei the Moogle; her name's more or less a pun too. Paying the piper > Pay the piper > Pei the Moogle :P
TechDefender Rad/Ele Defender
D'20 Gladiator DM/SR Scrapper
Cyclonite Cat Fire/Fire Blaster

@Cyclonite Cat
(Names changed at GM 'request')
Paw Prowler- D3
Paw cause Im a Clemson fan and Prowler cause as a Dark/Dark build I thought of the tune " Night Prowler" by AC/DC.
Falcon Kitiara:
Kitiara is her true name. Her first name, her family name she won't tell.
She chose Falcon to underline her passing from simple citizen to fighting hero. The falcon is a fighting bird, its flight is elegant without need of any training (as Falcon Kitiara's moves and posture are, she had to survive in a forest, alone, without equipment, and hunting and climbing and running and still be silent requires an excellent coordination and gracefulness), it is thought of as noble (and Kitiara's motives are noble, helping others, and avenging her parents), and it is alone (as she has been for so many years).
That's it
Captain Neem was a young mutant who at an early age learned to fly and fire kinetic blasts. He also really REALLY liked superheros and side scrolling space shooter video games. Neem is the sound that boss lasers usually make in those games and many heroes were Captain somethingorother so he put the two together.
The Core Being was a mysterious entity who was born in the reactor core of an experimental power plant. See the link in my sig for more details.
Electric Shell is a hero who was born with a chitanous shell over his body, For some reason it builds up amazing amounts of static electricity which he can discharge at things.
Digital was born deaf, mute, numb, and incapable of moving under her own power. Lucky for her she was born to a rich family who invested a lot of money in wetware interfaces. They had her hooked into a virual world that tied directly to her brain and allowed her to interact with her parents who then home schooled her and broght in specialists whenever she wanted to learn more about a subject than they knew.
After her 17th birthday she had become quite the inventor and had developed plans for a suit that would allow her to move under her own direction, she also developed a set of goggles that would feed information about her surroundings to the virtual world connection in her brain. Further inventions have allowed her to do many amazing things in her surroundings. She is now 20 years old and fighting crime. Digital was the name she chose for this due to her reliance on digital technologies.
Super Funball is a man who was fused with a highly reactive form of rubber, Anything that collides with him is repelled the opposite direction at three times the force. (kin with lots of slots in repel) Mostly a joke character.
^gotta admit, Digital sounds cool
Dark Mirror/Mirage: Started off as a Tech-based Illusionist but became magically empowered by an artifact he retrieved from a Hellion raid. He loves illusions and trickery and loves to irritate his opponents. Because of the artifact, however, he has lost his memory and sees himself as a nonexistant entity. Trying to learn his past is like looking into a distorted (or Dark) mirror.
Paravespula: A former chemist who manufactured a drug that had the mutagenic power of bonding completely different sets of DNA. He ended up with the DNA of a rare species of wasp. He has the power to regenerate lost limbs and he's capable of producing his own venom. Paravespula is the genus of most species of bees, wasps, etc.
Powersets I'd like to see:
Water or Wind-related powers (not just Storm Summoning)
More Minion-types
Demolitions Blast set (and maybe a Specialty Explosives Buff/Debuff) in tribute to the greatest explosives villain ever, Evil Midnight Bomber
The Phantasim: RL the misspell is due to my lack of any kind of spelling ablity, int the back-story, however...
beginning his carreer in the 1930's, he didn't care enough to choose a name for himself, thinking a nameless force that struck in the night would be more unnerving to the criminals he hunted. On June 14th, 1938 the headline on the Chicago Tribune read "Misterious Phantasim Strickes Undreworld". The typo wasn't caught by the editor and the corection was printed deep in the paper where noone would see it, but by then it was already to late, everyone assumed that the mis-spelling was intentional and it stuck...He's still alittle sensitive about the whole thing
Vulpa: "It's Latin for fox, Stupid!" or so says the battle cry
Mister Majestic: Well, he's very full of himself and thinks of himself as very...well...majestic.
I am Karite, my name means Reaper. It was the title held by the most powerfull shinobi of my clan. It was my mentor's title before his death. Now I wear both the title and wield his legendary katana.
My Name Crour, is latin for Bloodshed. His other name is Sodalisae which is latin for companion, His name means companion bloodshed. (I mean it more as companion of bloodshed but then its long and complicated...)
*Sigh* I felt that people should know the genius of my hero naming ability. LOL-just kidding.
Queen Etheria- first started with her name, which was kindly borrowed from one of my favorite cartoons on Adult Swim, The Venture Bros. It was Dr.Girlfriend's name when she was with Phantom Limb. Anyways I made her costume and then I had the idea for her; the spirit of an anicent eygptain priestess of Isis, trapped in a magical gem, who fuses with a mild mannered, shy museum intern student. Poof-superherodom.
Morbidangel-A bad-a** comic book hero by London Knights. The story of my CoH character is actually a book I'm writing. Half-demon, half-angel, exiled to Earth and hunted by both sides. Whats a girl to do but try to survive. Taking the mantle of balance, she fights to maintain the thin line of good and evil.
Etherburn-Healing ability and Radation powers. Radation burns...and Ether was used as an anesetic, so Etherburn. This one is my fav. name because it's clever and I didn't borrow it from others.
Shock Jock - name originally came during beta when I was looking for a quick name to make an elec blaster. I was listening to the radio and "shock jock" sprang to mind. Character-wise then, it made sense for him to have been a radio DJ before becoming a hero. A brilliant engineering student, he helped to create the shock gauntlets (for lack of a better term) that give him his electric powers.
Dusk Storm - a dark/storm defender. Storm was an easy part of the name; Dust Storm first came to mind, but since his powers are night-based for character purposes, dusk sprang to mind. Hence, Dusk Storm
Wind Of Mind.
She is an illusion/Storm controller
Storm control = Wind
Illusion = Mind
Wind Of Mind
"NO....No clowns" - Positron
50s: Smasha (SS/SD Brute), House Rules (Mind/Thorn Dom), Wind of Mind (Illusion/Storm Controller), Coraxa (Kat/Inv Scrapper), Summer's Dream (Fortunata)
9 Red Dogs - is an incarnation of a Palladium system Ninjas and Superspies Mystic China character. According to the glossary of that book, 9 is a lucky number, red is a lucky color, and dogs are lucky animals. So, her name means lucky, lucky, lucky. Since she's a kat/SR scrapper, I thought it fit fairly well. Plus, I knew I wouldn't have to worry about anyone else having thought of it first. Lauren was raised by monks who have a monastery in a pocket dimension. They dedicate their time and pocket space to the preservation and safe-keeping of dangerous mystical artifacts. Lauren was a little too undisciplined to stay in the monastery full-time, so she's been sent out to "sow her wild oats" and mature. In the meantime, she hunts for dangerous articfacts to deliver into their keeping. Every time Azuria thinks she's getting some artifact retrieved, it's really a replica with enough of an aura to fool the people of Paragon's MAGI dept. The monks are quite good at what they do (they've been doing it for centuries after all).
Chaotique - kin/NRG defender sounded sort if chaotic to me what with the energy grabbing and the random knockback and all. I figured that just about everything Chaos woudl have been taken already so I added the ending "ique" to give her a feminine, saucy, French-sounding flair. Really she's a grad-student field-testing her techno-organic PhD project. Naturally, the testing has run a little (OK, a lot) longer than strictly necessary. But what's a girl to do?
Corporate Witch - She was a super worker in the Crey Industry's marketing division, but they decided they wanted more. They started doing a little tinkering with magic and radiation combined to see if they could create the uber-marketer. They got the Corporate Witch (power of the netherworld fused to the perfect corporate clone). Poor Cai is stuck in the world of the office and can't quite get away from that world. She sees everything in those terms.
The Bonewrack - No, it's not mispelled. The word wrack means a great amount of damage, implying possibly even more than a wreck. The Bonewrack means to make a wrack of the Skulls after what they did to him ruining his life and his family (hence the use of bone pointing to a special love of skulls in particular).
The Bar-Fly = Jonathan Grey (Rad/Rad Defender): An (now) ex-alcoholic trash truck driver. Found a magical totem on the top of a trash can. Set it on his dashboard. Got into a wreck with a tanker truck in Skyway City that was hauling biogenic and radioactive chemicals destined for illegal disposal in the sewer network. The magical artefact broke during the impact and fused itself, the chemicals, and several flies into Jon's body. Currently doesn't understand why the Vhazilok smell like "Chanel No. 5"
'Ouzo = Gregory Nikiolidias (BS/Inv Scrapper): A recent immigrant from the country of Greece. Carries the "Broadsword of Jason" and is infused with the power of Hermes. Sent to Paragon City to discover his true purpose on the "Isle of the Bull."
Cinca de Maya (Blaster, I don't remember the powerset): Not well developed yet. Hispanic female blaster with a red, white and green costume, yellow bird emblem on chest. Created on the 5th of May (hence the name). More or less, a name reservation at this time.
Liquide Air (Ice/Ice Blaster): There's a compressed gas company in our area called "Air Liquide" that supplies hospitals, welding supply houses, and other companies with liquid Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide and other industrial gasses. The name's a basic ripoff. No background yet.
The B.F.G.D (SS/Inv Tank): "The Big Friggin' Green Dude" - He's big. He's green. You figure it out. He's one of my clown-around characters.
and finally....
Donald McRonald (FF/Mind Control Controller): Convinces enemies to buy his unhealthy fried foods, thereby giving them heart attacks, road rage, obesity, and disobediant children. Yes, he's another "clown" around character.
The Cowman - In reality it's just my nickname (can't remember how it got started other than I like cows). In the game it's just cause the guy's insane. He has no idea why he calls himself that. Just random silliness really cause he doesn't look anything like a cow.
I have others, but way too many to mention. A lot of my characters just use their own names.
