Observer Mode

Voyeurs get to observe...

Oh, believe me....I will be watching
Why not just make us unable to send any messages of any kind while in observer mode? Wouldn't that be easier?

Team Speak and other chat programs. Too easy to bypass.
Still here, even after all this time!
Sad thing is...people I don't know will get to see me get my [censored] kicked.
First I will come in all confident.
I will then get knocked down.
Finally, I will be laughed at by strangers. Then I will be overcome by shame.
Yeah, that is pretty much how it will happen.

Lol. I wonder if the opposing EMP can REZ you, so they can do it again... and again.. and...
Actually I am quite infamous to healers. Unfortunaly the orange letters in my sig are true. Technically, I got my main to around lvl 75.
Oh...forgot a picture.
Yeah, its pretty much a casual thing for me now...
this just give me an idea:
let the betting begin, bet influence on teams...all we need now is some super-bookies....

I feel uncomfortable when Positron uses words like "voyeur".
He might wanna change that.

You guys crack me up
but seriously folks, the reason why the colloseum was at the center of roman life in many ways is because of the audience. the mightest of gladiators could duke it out in the most extravagant and flamboyant of battles, but if no one was around to watch, who really cared? the emperor, who decides the fate of the defeated gladiator, was his thumb not influenced by the cheers, or jeers, of the audience?
please positron, let us watch battles in the arena! let the heroes inside get worked up to the cheers of the people! let the people outside watch as their favourite heroes turn the competition into mush! let the streets be washed with the bloo...
oh sorry. got carried away there.
Very nice.
CatMan - some form on every server
Always here, there, and there again.
MMmmmm Spy Drones.
This is a damn good idea. My respect for you just went up a bit Poz. Don't let it go to your head. I'll just run out and buy a little more NcSoft stock before the jump happens due to the slew of people joining for the unique PvP in CoH.
Or, I could give you a cookie. Your choice.
OMG, that's brilliant.
OMG, you used my idea that I just posted, and even had time to make it better. You work fast!! I guess that's why you're Positron. Great job. I can't wait to watch some battles.
I bet a lot of people who don't want to PvP will be spectators and use that to eventualy try it out for themselves.
I've got mixed feelings about all this. On the one hand, it's just extraordinarily COOL that we'll be able to observe matches. Not so sure about having hover-cam-bot's flying all over the place... as long as they're never considered part of the targeting tree then I guess it'll be fine... But why make them destroyable at all? Why even have a model? Just let the viewer go into noclip mode and float all around.
Of course, this can and WILL leading to griefing... imagine an 8v8 match, where one team has hired or brought in a bunch of 'spectators', and all those floating cameras are sent to get as close to the other team as possible, being annoying and getting in the way (please tell me heroes will be able to clip straight through them, and don't let these cameras be as strong as your average pedestrian!!!). Of course, that'll be an inherent problem with pick-up matches anyway....
I suspect that leagues will form, and everyone will be governed by the honor system to not use spectators on teamspeak to reveal locations of the other side. Those SG's that do employ those kinds of tactics will undoubtedly be booted from these leagues, so it'll kind of govern itself. That's the way it's been in any FPS league I've ever been in. Always a small, tight knit community who trust each other not to "cheat"... although there's always one or two teams that try, and don't ever get caught... since there's no real way to prove otherwise.
For general spectators, not involved in the match, free floating would be best, as well as 'follow mode', where they would track behind a hero of their choice from either team, so they could observe.
If you are on a team and die, and go to the observer mode, you should either be locked onto your corpse but able to look freely around, or you can be locked onto ONLY following your teammates, and never the opposing side. Leave that kind of viewing to demo's and such.
Would also be great, and i'm fairly sure this will be able to be done, is that observers will be able to record demos... who will later convert them into movies. Can you simply imagine the quality of movies we'll be watching after these arenas go live? We'll finally be able to have 'actors' playing villains and such, and be able to fight with each other on camera! It'll be wonderful!
Anyway... really looking forward to it! Can't wait! Just really interested to see how it's all implemented.

Now, of course, some of you are right to point out that such a system is ripe for abuse... you can scout out enemy positions for your buddies and the like.
Thats why we made these Observer cameras targetable and easily destroyable. This is a very cool feature that adds another dimension to gameplay.
[/ QUOTE ]
Very cool indeed - although I can see a lot of abuses there too.
Running your camera up to some Kinetics defender running Repel (or some similar power which costs the user per target like Oppressive Gloom) and causing them to lose endurance, thus directly affecting the fight while an Observer. Heck, just getting a half dozen cameras buzzing in my face while I'm trying to fight would be annoying
On the other hand, maybe I can get a horde of my fans to cluster around me and boost my defense and acc buffs from Invincibility
Or any number of draining kinds of powers... having a friend always nearby in camera mode so you can always fire off a targeted heal or other self-buff (soul drain, consume, transference, etc. etc.) on a target which doesn't have souped-up defenses would be awfully handy in many cases.
DS
But how many spy-drone can watch the match ?
I prefer have to fight other Heroes than destroy a massive zerg of watchers..
And another thing..if they are targetable and destroyable this mean they are solid. Many of them could cause problems and exploit ( 20 drone floating aroud a blaster make him intargetable or at least much much difficult to target while he can nuke safer )
Anyway...*drool* :P
[ QUOTE ]
Aw, they're destroyable? Why not give us an option to make an invisible (thus non-distracting) version that can't be targetted, and just disable chat while in that mode?
[/ QUOTE ]
Because SGs with Teamspeak and Ventrilo will still be able to cheat.
Just a thought, but...is there any chance the spycams could have the "judge" emote enabled? It would be fun to be able to display a scorecard rating a PvPer's actions. The coin-toss might be good, too, with an observer acting as referee in a match.
The Way of the Corruptor (Arc ID 49834): Hey villains! Do something for yourself for a change--like twisting the elements to your will. All that's standing in your way are a few secret societies...and Champions of the four elements.
[color=hotpink]I think that fallen heroes should be able to either stay at their body, follow somone on their team, or become a camera. observers not in the match should not have a physical form, but have free movement. as for observers spying for 1 team, the ovservers should have their own channel that the fighters cant hear, and thats the only one they can use!
Mrow!
Ok, so the cameras are destroyable...what if you're just an observer, and not part of the match at all? Can they blow you up too? I'm just an innocent bystander. lol
What happens if there is an "Event" being hosted and lots of people want to observe? I can see the arena now with a 100 observers, so cramed with cameras the contestants have trouble targeting each other and don't have a hope of destroying all the cameras before new ones arrive.
LF Nova Blaster to Clear Cameras. PST
LOL Hopefully there will be a hard limit to the number of observers.
----------------------------
You can't please everyone, so lets concentrate on me.
Sounds good, but I'd like an option where you could "attatch" to a hero and watch from outside the actual battle. It would be like watching a demo, where you can only see local chat, and the console is hidden, but you can rotate the camera to get a clear view of the action. Perhaps you could have a list of all the participants and the ability to switch between them at will.
What happens after your camera is destroyed? Do you booted out of the match?
I'm thinking that before the match starts, you could invite people as observers. I'm not sure how viable this is in CoH, but an RTS I played a while back called Strifeshadow had the ability to allow a virtually unlimited number of observers by making it so that the players didn't have to wait for the observers to "catch up". Any sort of lag would show up to the observers as a skip in the action, while the players only had to deal with latency in relation to each other.
Personally, I'm less worried about 'cheating' by giving away a hiding player's position (and that's all you'd be able to do, since the console is hidden). Who wants to have a long, drawn out match of hide and hide? The possibility that someone will give away your position only makes it harder to play like a weenie.
If I remember correctly, there was a Legion issue from the mid to late 1980s which had Lone Wolf/Chamo Boy etc. land on the Khurd homeworld and they fought some Khurdish gladiator in an arena.
People would have floating eyes (with betting lines) transmit the action to their homes. Interesting parallels.
Anyone else remember this?
ooo that sounds kinda cool, i wonder what the cameras will look like lol.
Thanks for giving us some inside info on this posi
