Observations about Recluse's Victory over the past 2 nights:
<ul type="square"> [*]I think people like playing heroes better. Every RV instance I entered was easily 70% hero / 30% villain. Villains got trounced every time, which got very frustrating after a while. Heck, in RV 17 there were enough heroes to camp in front of the villain hospital just out of drone range, and hold all the villains in place while the rest of the heroes captured all the pillboxes over and over. I thought I was in EverQuest for a minute.[*]With NPCs fighting side-by-side with PCs, debt is a forgone conclusion.[*]Named heroes/villains are ludicrously difficult. It got to a point where I just had to run every time I saw Positron or Manticore. I was hoping as a corrupter that I'd be able to contribute somewhat to debuffing/damaging them, but they seem 10X more resilient than an AV, and even if one-shotting is impossible these days, they can still defeat you pretty much by just looking at you. Never once while fighting a named character did I feel super. I felt like an ant getting beat down by a god.[*]PvP is a lot more fun with teams than trying to lone wolf. [*]Stealth (even slotted) is pretty much useless. Players seem to see right through it.[*]Any build without stamina (not including masterminds) seems pretty much gimped, even with one end reduction in every power.[/list]
I'm sorry the observations are all negative, but in two nights of gameplay, it's been nothing but punishment. I'm sure there's going to be a chorus of players ready to tell me what I'm doing wrong now. -
Don't get me wrong, because I love the idea of mayhem missions, but wouldn't it be nice to have a PvP variation of it? I'd like opposing players to be able to come after me, rather than NPC heroes/villains.
Just a little dream of mine, y'know, to actually have conflict between villains & heroes where they can actually affect each other's game. PvP zones don't fit that bill (yet). -
You may or may not be able to do anything about it. If it's a software firewall on your computer (like Win 2003 Firewall or Norton), then you just have to tell the software firewall to allow CoX to connect through it.
If you're at work or school, sitting behind a corporate firewall, there's probably not much you can do. You'd have to get your IT admin to open up the proper port to allow a connection. They don't like doing that... -
If you want, I'll host it for you. It's tiny. Blast me a PM if Pilcrow is too busy to help you out.
-
Killing an opponent within the hospital should reset your reputation to zero. There's nothing notable about killing a weakened opponent over and over.
-
I could have sworn I saw someone bust out a cell phone in Talos Island last night at the tram...
-
Thanks for taking the time to write this up, Zombie. 5 stars for you...
He's getting rid of the Talos stores? Can he also get rid of training enchancement drops post level 20!? -

My concern is how the base system will support the SMALL supergroup.
My SG is a total of 10 guys. That's it. We're all real-life friends and we want to stay small and tight-knit. I am having serious doubts that we'll be able to compete against the other groups out there with 75 full members.
It seems that the base-raiding system is not geared for small groups or casual gamers. Lord Recluse, can you provide any comment on this?
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, your 10-man SG would need to get an item of power first, which would likely be a chore in itself. I keep foreseeing items of power largely ending up in the hands of the bigger SGs with the massive influence and members to get one and hold onto it. So your SG can probably go raiding to its heart's content, but I don't think protecting your base would often be a problem.
[/ QUOTE ]
This is still speculation of course. It would be disappointing if true though. I mean, even within the promotional cinematic trailer for CoV at E3 showed a base raid staged by a team of 5 (Statesman, Positron, Manticore, Synapse, and ForeShadow). I know it was just a promo video, but my hope is that the system can scale for SGs of different sizes. -

Here's my gripe with the new comic (SPOILER WARNING)...
Are they going to kill Statesman off in EVERY single issue!? They're 2 for 2 so far! There's only so many times I can put up with those kinds of shenanigans (with Marvel comics being the worst offender of the "kill a hero, bring 'em back" club). The heroes lose any aspect of mortality every time it is done. Soon, no one will care how much trouble States and his crew get into, because you just know that they'll all be there in the next issue grinning from ear to ear...
My 2 cents... -

Personally I'm not that hepped on the idea of paying rent to maintain a base. Rent was one of the big fun killers for a lot of MUDs, and when I'm already paying "real" rent to play CoH, the idea of having to constantly play in order to maintain my base does NOT sound worth it.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm worried about the rent as well. My SG consists to 10 (count 'em, 10) RL friends that just wanted to play together. We haven't accepted anyone else into the SG, nor do we plan to. It seems that we'll have a hard time paying the bills if we have a base that can compare to a base of a full 75 member SG. -
He's not dead. He was waiting for Statesman to clear the area so he could use his Awaken.

Poor Synapse! Recluse knees him in the nuggets and calls him Sally in front of his friends!

Just wanted to say "thanks!" for all those who spoke with Statesman or Lord Recluse "off the record" and actually respected it here on these boards. The fans on these forums are by far a cut above the norm.
I also had a great time meeting so many of you at WonderCon. It was great to see how excited people are about CoV!
See you at GenCon and Origins.

Well, as a creator of Deadlands, we've got to hand you 5 stars. What a fun game that is. I'm sure you'll churn out something equally magical in City of Villains.
Thanks Shane.

I wanted to know this for awhile now since I cant figure it out, but what HK flick is that from ?
[/ QUOTE ]
That's from Equilibrium.
[/ QUOTE ]
Thank You, I must now go online and hunt it down.

Look no further.
Equilibrium at Amazon
This film is well worth it for any action fan. Best of all, you see Bale kick 9 kinds of a-s-s and show that he is well qualified to be an action hero worthy of being called The Dark Knight. -

im a programer myself i know its extreamely hard to come up with something like that but if you instead of making a TV you could try like a bulletin board type of thing telling what matches are going on and at the end of the match it says the winner
wouldnt have to worrie about 20+ frames a sec just 2 the start frame and the end frame
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, how about if a match is in progress, you can click on it and it will open up a window that will let you watch the match. It would be something only visible on your computer so you won't be slowing anyone else down. It could be full screen so you won't have to worry about anyone else doing something that will hose your frame rate (just have chat windows visible so you can still talk to other people but block the participants of the fight so there could be no hints from the peanut gallery). It would simply be a webcast of the fight. That should easily be feasible.
You could even do this in a specified location(s), kind of like a sports bar. Would be a great socialization spot and I am sure quite a few matches would find their start there.
[/ QUOTE ]
You mean like seeing the match through another player's eyes? Like ESPN mini-cams? I kinda like that idea.
I'm not very fond of the spy camera idea (cheating sucks). I'd much rather watch the match through another player's eyes, just like watching NASCAR from the "in-car" or "hood-mounted" cameras. -
That's a good idea Jober. I'd be satisfied with a scoreboard, current matchup stats, and maybe a snapshot of the combatants. The bookies will gather for miles!
-
[ QUOTE ]
Asking for a TV is kinda like being on a boat and saying "Hey you know what would be cool, if this boat could fly, after all, planes can fly so why cant you make the boat fly". If you want a flying boat it really needs to be designed in from the beginning.
[/ QUOTE ]
I kinda like the idea of a Flying Boat! I want one! -

Render to texture really shouldn't be that bad - it's used massively in many other games (Lock On, HL2, Max Payne)
[/ QUOTE ]
None of the games you mention are Massive Multiplayer. I'm sure making renderings available to 250 in a zone is quite different than making it available to a single player. -
[ QUOTE ]
The TV idea is much better than cameras. Positron, if this is indeed possible given the new evidence, I'd take this route. You do not want to flood the arenas with cameras. Having invisible TV screens would be much better and the suites idea with individual instances would cut down on lag.
[/ QUOTE ]
What evidence are you talking about? Conjecture from forum patrons that aren't on the development team that have absolutely no idea what the code architecture is like?
Believe me, I'd love to watch arena matches on a giant Trinitron, but if the devs say it's impossible... well, we've just got to believe them.
I still want it though... -
[ QUOTE ]
This technically isn't possible with our engine. It would have to be a huge animated texture refreshing at 20+ frames per second.
We did think of it, but the engineers' eyeballs popped out of their sockets when we suggested it.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hey Positron,
What would be more useful than a huge Trinitron to view the matches inside the arena, would be a terminal where combatants could view a DEMO FILE of their battle AFTER the event. I know that each individual could do this client-side, but it would b really cool to just come out of the arena and have access to a "replay".
Anyone else like this idea? -
[ QUOTE ]
Aw, they're destroyable? Why not give us an option to make an invisible (thus non-distracting) version that can't be targetted, and just disable chat while in that mode?
[/ QUOTE ]
Because SGs with Teamspeak and Ventrilo will still be able to cheat. -

Here's my list of desired emotes. Some are ideas already presented here, and some are my own:
/em knuckles (crack knuckles)
/em neck (crack neck from side to side)
/em glare (some sort of eye flash)
/em cackle (an EVIL laugh)
/em kickcorpse (add insult to injury when you take a hero down)
/em combatpose1 (martial arts stance)
/em combatpose2 (martial arts pose with the "Neo" taunt that waves the opponent to come closer)
/em neckslash (draws finger left to right across throat, maybe even says "You're dead meat.")
/em lineinsand (draws a line in ground with toe, daring heroes to cross it)
/em thememusic (a villain's got to have creepy entrance music!)
/em impressed (a "golf-type" clap followed with nodding and perhaps a "Good. Very good...")
/em pace (walking back and forth, arms behind back)
/em break (moves hands together as if grasping something and breaking it)
/em dismiss (waves a minion to begone)
