Wow! There's going to be a tabletop COH RPG!
SAAAWWEEEETTTTT. Just another way to get my friends to buy the acual game...make them try the RPG!!!!
I cast Burn on the darkness.
I can't wait to GM this - anytime my players give me a hard time? NERF THEM!
In all seriousness this is cool - mostly cause hopfully we will get lots more of the backstory of the CoH world in it.
I do hope it's Mutants and Masterminds compatable, or has a conversion table.
It's so easy to write a _bad_ Superhero game. M&M, like CoH, just _works_.

I've got every game Eden Studios has ever produced, and all of them are good. Buffy, Angel and Conspiracy X (new edition coming soon!) are soooo good they're like gamer candy.
I'll be buying this bad boy as soon as it comes out -- only question is who gets to gm -- me or my husband?

The geek, it rises, uncoiling from it's slumbering grip on the base of my brain stem... hungering...
Unisystem, hm? Same one they use in the Buffy game and the Witchcraft game, I think. VERY simple system, great for quick-and-dirty roleplaying. I'm curious how they'll translate that to the variety of powers used for superheroes. Buffy's magic system was incredibly vague and open-ended... which works really well with the Buffyverse. Sounds from the press release that they might just translate the powers over, probably with a "build yer own!" system.
Anyhow, coolness.
You know, Fyre's name always makes me thing of a big white guy with a beer belly thats on fire. Like the Redneck version of the human torch or something.

LMAO!!!!!!
My very first COH character was a scrapper named Slayer Faith. When I got my own account I decided to remake my little scrapper and give her a name that was less of a potential copyright infringment.
Firecracker is an extremely obscure "Buffy" reference that still worked for the character concept. It, of course, was taken. Hence Fyrecracker.
But you sir, have given me a whole new perspective on the name. I'm not sure I can ever play my little scrapper again without giggling.

Unisystem is a totally different animal from d20 (well, technically M&M is OGL, but let's not split hairs).
I wish the old posts were here. I've had a hunch they would use Unisystem for a long time. Aside from the obvious connection Jack has to Eden, I think Unisystem is a good choice for CoH. It has plenty of substance to it, but it isn't a game with real heavy mechanics like d20 or Hero.
Just my opinion, but a real heavy system would be the pits for CoH. The RPG needs to come as close as possible to recreating the kind of action the MMORPG is so well known for. Combat needs to be fast and dynamic. I'm hoping we'll see a system akin to TORG where we have mechanics for grunts and then for the "real" bad guys. While that wouldn't be exactly like the MMORPG version, I think it is a reasonable compromise.
Kind of curious that one of the other systems that comes to mind that would have been interesting to use for this is Savage Worlds...considering that Shane is a CoH dev these days *waves at Shane*

And one of the best parts of Summoner was finding the little bonus clip that they made (The IFilm Clip) using that bit from the Dr. Demento Show...
But why? Champions already exists. Although I suppose a Paragon City sourcebook would be cool.

Not the slightest chance in heck. Eden is Unisystem, M&M is OGL based on d20, and never the twain shall meet. However, I'd expect the source material will be easy to use for whatever system floats your boat.
It's an interesting announcement, but I'm kind of on the fence as to whether it's something to look forward to. Eden games, while always good quality, tend to be heavily overpriced for what's delivered. I also dunno how well the COH power acquisition and enhancement structure will convert to a pen and paper game - it's OK for an MMORPG, but a little on the clunky side for P&P - but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
I hate to say it, but d20 might very well be more effective for a CoH tabletop. We're used to a certain level of dynamic combat, and it would be great if tabletop could emulate that. However, CoH has a great deal of mechanical complexity in how the combat turns wout. We as end users don't see the complexity since the software handles it for us, but for a tabletop game, I just don't see how anything but a d20 system or some proprietary equivalent can do the job. CoH is far more complex than most people would give it credit for.

Better face it. Champions is an... acquired taste. Although there's something to be said for the current cinder-block-sized HERO rulebook.
Personally, I think Mutants and Mastermind is a better match for City of Heroes, as it's level-based but still fairly free-form, but here's hoping the Eden came comes out good. If nothing else, they at least know what they're doing when it comes to game-writing!
Completely depends on your group. Champions is a lot more number crunching and a lot more flexable. It's also a lot... a LOT more hardcore. M&M is a much smaller bite. It still lets you (kinda) make the powers you want, but everything is in a nicer bite-sized package.
A CoH PnP RPG (wow, that's a lot of letters that stand for stuff) will prob go to being easier than M&M -- thus appealing to a younger audience. Just my guess here... You know it's not going to be involved as Champions, and Cryptic liked to involve the "whole" when doing stuff, so my guess is pre-made powers based off of a one dice attack system.

No no no, it's funny because as an auto-hit spell Magic Missile cannot be fired in a random direction, but needs a target in order to be cast in the first place. Since Burn is a drop, it needs no target and would actually be quite effective at dispelling the darkness. Add the fact that a first level wizard can only cast one spell per day, and Burn needs only a short recharge before it's usable again, and you can see how you miss on the sheer wastefulness of the act. Now if you were casting, say, Radiation Infection on the darkness, that would be closer to the original intent.
Why yes, I am a geek.
