OOC: What do your characters do?
a note influence is not cash, the best way to explain it is FAME
for example Pink Neo Ranger is relitivly poor shes about 16 and lives with her parents, (and have every Power Ranger merchendice know nto man) but her technical genius and her force field ranger get up has made her quite erm.....unforgetable so her 90 od k influence is just that...pleape know here and give her stuff (enhancements) if she promotes them (spends influence)

Death Wreck is a vengence demon who, bacause of a bad summoning by the CoT, has been incarnated into a human form. Most of his power has been stripped from him and he is now subject to the whims of a human body. As he has gotten more powerful he has lost more and more of his human appearance, this is not a total set back as it would be in any other city. As a vengence demon DW's skills were kind of limited (He killed my Dad, go kill him. OK) Now, he hangs out in his apartment in Dark Astoria (cheap rent) and plays his Dreamcast or patrols the streets of Paragon City.

True, in terms of the literal meaning of the word. It is fame. However in terms of game mechanics. This is what we get when we sell and what we spend when we buy. Therefore I tend to veiw it as cash. Just my 2 inf.

Zyphoid was a Dr. But that was while ago. In his experiments he came across some sap from a tree of life. Hoping to use it to find a cure for the lymphoma that was killing his wife, he created a serum. Not willing to test this on his wife he went through several versions in lab test (no animals were harmed.) But with out a living subject to test it on there was no proof of the effects. So he did the only thing he had left and tested it on him self. The change was pretty gradual. Flesh turned black, large green veins swelled to the surface
But his wife never saw the monster he was becoming. She was killed in a mugging while walking in the park. This drove Zyph into a deep depression and what arose from the ashes was a hero.
With his powers the way they are, he no longer needs to eat or sleep. Recently through investigations he has learned that what he truly did was alter the creation of a colleague of his (skiping names to avoid spoilers.) Known as the will of the earth. Now he fights crime waiting for the day that he may become a monster. He stands around the train stations when he feels slightly tired (hehe I log off)
One spandex hero once said to him fighting to avenge your dead wife? Yea thats original. Zyph replied So is spandex
And walked away.

My main, Gaul MacFion, is busy full time running the Nights Watch, so he doesnt get out much. the time he has off from there he is looking out for his younger sister Eryn. she is also new to the city but crashes at the Watchhouse. the both use the stipened for being heros plus the bounties for the criminals they bring in to support themselves and the Watch.
OVCP-002 is a program written within the server itself, not an actual hero in the game, but rather a part of the game. no need for income.
Charged Ion works for the American Meterological Society studying the effects of super powers on the worlds climate, especially in areas of high concentration (hence asignment in Paragon). they dont know that he is a superhero.
havent thought of backstory for Silk Shadow, but it has something to do with her grandfathers katana
Super Simian (lvl 13 science tanker) was a genetic scientist who's revolutionary new steroid left him with a revolutionary new cancer, treatable only through a unique form of gamma radiation that left him with invulnribility and super-strength. He continues his gene research remotly by studying the effects that his steroid had on his body. He sends his results in to various companies to help them further understand gene therepy. He is paid hansomly in cash. (Liberty server, Liberty Covenant founding member)
I have other characters, but he's my fave.
Let´s see.
Crosshairs is a goverment employee, he works as a goverment liason for the SG On Her Majestys Service. That pays fairly well, but he also picks up any bountys on crooks he brings in, that makes for a nice lump of extra cash wich is sorely needed. The gov just refuses to spring for anything but standard FMJ ammo after all, and Tungsten carbide rounds just ain´t cheap.
TAD Mk 13 is a robot, he realy don´t need money as his internal nanobot repair system can break down just about any material to affekt repairs.
Agent Omega is a goverment agent, so i´d bet they pay him a fancy sum just to keep him happy. (Don´t want that agent running of with multi-billion cybernetics just because he felt he was being underpaid you know. : ) )
Dunkelrand is living of the interest of some Switz bank accounts from WW 2.
Big Earl is a truckdriver first and a hero´ish person second.
McBurk is almost flat out broke. Anyone feel like employing the poor sap?
Nessie just don´t care about money, being an ancient spirit kind of makes you look beyond that kind of stuff. If he ever needs to pay of informants or such, he can always bring up something from the earth that those silly humans concider important. Like gold or diamonds.
Re: influence, cash, and fame,
We really ought to regard influence as an undifferentiated sum of cash, social connections, fame, etc. Enhancements aren't actually objects you can take to a pawnshop, much of the time. Training and natural techniques are after all, skill. And magic is, like, posession/blessing by supernatural entities, as I understand it. None of those things has an easy, clean translation into cash the way a pawnshop translates "Explosive Ammo" or "Nectanebo's Coin" into cash.
Personally, I think some of the Natural Origin enhances should have been reputation themed, e.g., the fear, taunt, and confuse.
Ok, sorry for threadjacking.

I throw influence at Statesman and he throws back cookies. I throw influence at Ms. Liberty and she throws back pie. I throw influence at Back Alley Brawler and run, because he throws five day old Pillsbury biscuits that are harder than Sky Skiff's hull. Being cybernetic, I don't sleep, so I don't need a house. (You can always bathe in the fountains and rivers.) If you ration it well and keep a schedule, you can also live off the free danishes and doughnuts the tech stores give away during sales. Who needs a job?

Interesting thread.
Purple Nebula secretly heads up a multi-national corporation and has a private investigation firm on the side.
Greystar lives off of what little he gets from the city for fighting bad guys.
Swamp bug lives in a swamp. He doesn't even own a pair of pants. Doesn't care either.
Malakai McFey is homeless, sleeps on the streets, begs for change, washes visors and goggles for influence. He's pretty new to the city.
Femdroid is the property of Galactic Investigations. Doesn't earn money.
Demonelle has been known to occasionally charge bad guys an 'arresting fee', which usually consists of whatever they have in thier pockets, for her time and trouble. She's trying to be good, honest.
What your hero does or doesn't do is completely up to you. Heroes get some pay, so subsisting on that is likely enough for day to day living.
LadyMage's alterego, Rachel Hollie is a full time member of the Paragon City Ballet.
Just A Girl, or Melora Devon, is a Personal trainer in her off time, occasionally teaching women's self defense courses.
Caffiene Queen and Canadian Witch (Karen Maitland and Breanna Beauchamps) are both students at Paragon University. Caffiene Queen is also the spokesperson (in her hero persona) for Champion Cola.
Blueberry Pie (aka Danielle Reaves) is the daughter of the Paragon Museum of History's Curator, Maxwell Reaves. She has the whole little spoiled little rich girl motif going.
ShadowSoldier (Coriana Xanith) doesn't have a job per se, instead she spends her time working on her suit, getting it repaired back to the form it used to be.
Ashes of Rose (Rose Van Houghton) is a 16 year old High school student.
Rainbow Avenger is a personal trainer to the wealthy, which allows him the time and flexibility to fight crime whenever it suits him and to look fabulous doing it. He's extremely well compensated for what little work he does but is unconcerned about his living arrangements because he is seldom home. When he is, he's usually in the bedroom.
He shares a rather squalid fourth-floor walkup in Kings Row with his friend Kid Clockwork. It was the Kids place originally (before Rainbow crashed one night and never left). KC is a renegade Outcast Shocker but is gradually distancing himself from his gang background. His proximity to the Avenger is gradually strengthening his abilities. That and the fact that he has not quite said no to Superadine. He mostly hides this secret from his roommate, who would not approve.
Kid Clockwork has no job per se, and I suspect he may still be selling restricted substances from his apartment and/or robbing the thugs he arrests. In either case he will have to outgrow these habits to become a real hero. Stay tuned kids!

Hmmm, let's see...
Belladonna. is independently wealthy, with the origins of her wealth being a bit dangeous to speculate about (at least where she might overhear). She lives in a sprawling condo (the entire floor!) in Dark Astoria, right next to the Moth Cemetary wall.
Lotus On Water (Hasukazu Kitegawa) is similarly fortunate, being the only child of shipping magnate Hideo Kitegawa. She does, however, hold a position with Kitegawa Shipping, unsurprisingly in the Security department.
Dollhouse (Cassadie Cohen) is a highschool student, living with a foster family and supported in part by the insurance settlement resulting from her parents' death. She also receives a generaous stipend from Diemos Innovations, the builders of her cybernetics.
under.tow (Dr. Annabella Planck) is a research professor at Paragon University.
"And in this moment, I will not run.
It is my place to stand.
We few shall carry hope
Within our bloodied hands."
Virtue:
Mindora has no job. She's been buying food solely on her hero stipend, and sleeping in her Personal Force Field, hovering in midair, right up until her SG-mate Shadeburn found out about it. She now shares an apartment with Shadey in King's Row, though they're looking for better accomodations.
Rongo (Nami Mizuno) is an undeclared freshman at PCU, on a student visa from Japan. She doesn't have a job yet; she lives in the PCU dorms.
Turankusu is a business administration freshman at PCU. His parents are fairly wealthy, owning a high-tech firm, and so he doesn't really need a job. He receives $2,000 a month for rent and living expenses from his mother, and is training to take over the company. He currently lives at the dorms, as well.
Chakat Streak is a masters student in mechanical engineering at PCU, and works nights as a bartender. Shi shares a penthouse condo above the MC Louis Investments building in High Park, King's Row, with hir SG mate Tygara.
LtCmdr T'rana used to be an officer in a future space navy before being time-displaced. Now she's attending the Paragon City Police Academy, and taking special training for SWAT placement.
Agent Ravage works full-time for KGB Special Section 8, be it in heroing, constructing devices to aid himself and his SG mates, or taking care of the SG pet, the People's Puppy.
Freedom:
Sonnette Felstrom/Nalli Midori (host and symbiote, represented in game as two different characters) is a former actress, and currently a professional adventurer/hero.
War Cat, EarthShade, BrightShard, Chakat Streak, Chakamil Silverspot, Mindora, Diabolesse, Jasper Baen
KGBSS8: Agent Ravage, Pestilence Girl, Umbral Claw, Howlback, Dr. Glit
Young Phalanx: Necril, Blazing Witch
Victor Manning (Vectorman) normally works as a computer programmer. However, he seems to always find himself between jobs, as he keeps getting caught playing some video game instead of working (in actuality he's remotely controlling his alter ego).
Aiden OSullivan (The Soul Keeper) is the owner of a rough neck bar.
Herr Automaton doesn't really do anything. He occasionally goes to pawn shops and pawns off the weapons he recovers from whoever he's fighting for money. Most of the time, when he's not fighting or being insulted, he's back at his secret abandoned 5th Column Base hideout in Gemini Park, watching TV and eating cheez doodles.
WOLVES AND BEES 2012
Hmmm, let's see.
Tygara (Dr. Jennifer O'Hoolihan) was a research Biologist before she became a weretiger; in the aftermath of that change and the Rikti War, she became a professional hero. Now nearing the end of her career (level 46), she's looking into becoming a Professor of biology at her Alma Matter, PCU. She shares a penthouse condo above the MC Louis Investments building in High Park, King's Row, with her SG mate Chakat Streak. While she could afford a better place, its a bit impractical for the lower-leveled Streak to get around places like Steel Canyon and Founder's Falls, and she enjoys hir company.
Nihi was a Feral Cat in Hawaii before being transformed into a catgirl, so she'd been surviving be sleeping and hunting in Perez Park when not heroing. However, due to the recent cold snap, she's been looking into warmer accomidations.
Seismis lives off the payments of a Trust fund he was willed when his parents died. He's currentlly an undeclared freshmen at PCU, and lives in the dorms.
Omega Rabbot, being a rebel Eidolon, has no need for food or sleep, so has no perminant residence or job. She tends to hang out at video arcades, anime shops, or libraries when she's bored or needs to relax.
Lord Damien comes from a former supervillian family, while both his parents are dead or incarcerated, they managed to hide their assests well enough that Damien literally wants for nothing. As he's planning to eventually become a supervillian in his own right, he heroes only to study the methods of the enemy as well as having a legitimate way to develop his powers. He's currentlly a law and criminology freshman in PCU for similar reasons.
Shadeburn used to be an elite thief and enforcer of a criminal organization in an alternate reality before being captured (and later experimented on) by Crey in a specimin-gathering foray via their illegal portal tech. Currentlly, she's a professional hero, living in a tiny apartment in King's Row on her Stipend. As she recentlly welcomed Mindora into her home, they're looking for a bigger place.
Freedom:
Sarah Murphy/Rik Felstrom (host and symbiote, represented in game as two different characters) Is a highlly experience law-enforcement officer and is currentlly working as a consultant for the PCPD. They have, however, held jobs as an Actor/Actress and Priest/Priestess in the past in their home dimension.
War Amy Rose is a mercenary warrior, willing to work for whoever pays well (She'd probablly join Hero Corps ig it were possible in-game), And she regards her stipend from the city as a payment for her services rendered as a professional [censored] kicker.
Tygara - 50 Claws/Regen/Power Scrapper, Virtue- Member of Kitties on the Prowl.
Shadeburn - Dark/Rad Defender, Virtue- Member of Catch 'Em Crew
Nature Boy' - Elec/Ice Blaster, Virtue - Member of Young Phalanx
Well, Felgraf doesn't really have a 'secret identity'.. he doesn't have anyone that could be harmed by having his identity public, and it's just far easy to 'hero' if you don't necessarily have to go run into some back alley and change your clothes.
He doesn't take the stipend from the city (Or, when he does, he doesn't keep it), either... it just feels wrong to him, to be paid for simply doing what he feels is right. So he lives in a rather crummy apartment complex in kings row, and makes the money to pay the rent and buy food by doing 'odd' jobs for the other tenants in the complex: Using his fire power to light the pilot light in the furnace if it goes out, or his stopping by people's rooms and using his ice powers on the insides of their fridges to keep them cold if (or, where he lives, when) the power goes out, and perhaps to help keep them cool during the summer. He also tends to take care of the occasional mugging or robbery attempt...
Sister Jeanne is a Catholic nun and as such is supported by the Paragon City Diocese (her stipend is tithed). Basically she has an expense account of sorts to live off and housing is supplied.
Ami Mizuno is a Medical Intern at Phoenix Medical in Talos. Unknown to the general public (or her) she is actually an andriod duplicate of the real Ami (deceased in the Rikti war). As such she has no need to sleep (although she has an apartment in SC to keep up apperances).
Rei 04 is a clone and as such logs back into her labratory 'home' after field testing on her powers. The taxpayers pick up the bill on her.
Coronal Flare is the adopted 'Daughter' of Jeanne (from Praetorian Earth) and as a minor lives at home with her 'mother'. Unknown to Jeanne she is also a Peacebringer fusion, the few times that she's been caught sneaking out, a fast form shift has prevented 'Mom' from making the connection between her daughter and the flying seafood platter.
Sister Jeanne 50 Katana/SR Scrapper
Ami Mizuno 44 Emp/Psi Defender
Rei 04 41 Grav/Kinetics controller
Coronal Flare 28 Peacebringer juvenile delinquent
Nicholas Dent, aka Point.Blank, used to peddle dope and do some larceny. These days he mostly fences stuff from Clockwork lairs. It's not stealing if a bunch of murderous robots have it, right?
Elumien is an ancient magus, and as such has various arcane means for fulfilling his vital needs. If he's in the mood he can always make enchanted gewgaws and sell the to tourists... lol
Arthropoda is basically an eight foot tall bug. He eats shrubbery. Lots, and Lots of shrubbery. Sleeps out in the open, whatnot. Few gangsters dumb enough to mess with a half ton of sleeping mutated freak.
Steele Magnolia is an unemployed metallurgist and neurologist. Hard to find good work when Crey is annoyed with you.
Simon-Says is 17 and lives at home with her guardian.
Winter-Kills is a college student and waitress.
Sgt Pandora is active duty USAF.
2020 Vision is an indigent runaway.
