UPDATED: An Idiot's Guide to RP
think your onto something moe....
First off, awesome guide. RP is a subject near and dear to my heart, and Ive seen more RP on Virtue than on any other server, or any other game.
Ive just read through the last 16 pages of posts, and there are a few things Id like to throw in.
One of the best ways to meet other Rpers is to open up that find window, and invite one to your team. A lot of Rpers have taken to listing that they ARE roleplayers in their search comments, and inviting one to a mission you were about to solo is NEVER a bad idea. Even if you have to lackey or sidekick them. Fire a few in-character one-liners or comments back and forth during the mission, and see where it goes! While youre at it, add Rper or RP friendly to your own search comments so people know what to expect! Youll enjoy your missions a lot more, trust me on that.
The bios and descriptions are perfectly valid in this game. Please, stand around sometime and just read peoples bios as they wait for the train or step off the boat, or while youre waiting for the tank to get back from the restroom! How do you know this guys life story? A hundred ways!
Hey, I saw that interview you did on Channel 7 last week. Did you really grow up with Clockwork?
I read your dossier, Mr. Smith
Im sensing a conflict with you and your family.
I just probed your memories, Im sorry to hear about your mutant father.
Is it true what the Hellions say about you? That you feel no pain?
These sorts of ice-breakers are like one-two punches to floor your fellow Rpers. Youre taking an interest in their story, and also revealing something of your own. Its a great way to start up some nice RP.
Yes, not to be elitist, but the RP community, like any other subculture, has its own conventions and jargon they use to identify their own.
i h8 sewers lol - not an Rper.
I aint never gettin the smell outta my clothes if they keep sendin me down here! - Rper.
The first guy, Im not going to waste my time with. The second, Ill re-invite him the next time I see him on. Yeah, its faster and easier to type the first line, but Ive found in the years of online roleplaying Ive done, that people who think ur and ne1 are actual words tend to be very immature, powergamers, or just people that arent logged in for the same reason I am. More power to em, but not my preferred company, you know?
Anyway, again, great RP community here on Virtue, and if you want to take a more active part in it, dont sit around Pocket D waiting for somebody to come talk to you. Reach out there and say something. Youll be surprised at who you can meet.
Thanks for the comprehensive guide. It's added a new dimension to my CoX experience....

Great guide... I feel more RP pro-ish than ever! I don't care what they say, Burnsie, you're a smart idiot.
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but a good way to help develop a character's personality is find online personality tests and answer them as how you think the CHARACTER, not the player, would respond. It can go a long way in showing how the character would react in certain situations.
Also look for those lists of favorite things that are very prevalent on blogging sites like MySpace and LiveJournal, once again answering as the character, not as the player.
Just a couple suggestions that may have already been mentioned.

Yep! I gotta agree. I just made a toon on Virtue and was dabbling with the notion of RP. After reading this guide, I know exactly what I'm going to do. I don't feel like an RP noob so much anymore.
Burnsie - As far as I know you are a rather intelligent idiot when it comes t RP.
Zeke_Thorn - I like your info. Good tips. Nice way for me to realize I should change how I type.
Pheonyx - Also clever, a very very good idea!!
Bravo to you all!!

more like
"I just probed your [censored], sorry about that"
Insert whatever you want in censored anything works
Ive known how to RP for a long time, but this is useful for people who didnt RP for a long time. Though half the people I know RP, but not on city of heroes. Still, useful.
((hehe that's pretty cool idiots guide should post that also on Pinnacle there's a few there that need it ))
Hello all,
After reading a bit of this post, it seems I've been inadvertantly doing most of that. While I don't actively RP, I am a huge fan of bios and even more detail. Basically, what I'm asking is that you read Roseheart's bio and tell me what you think, or any Constructive criticism you might have.
For those of us who are curious, I plan to upload her extended, third-person bio to the CoH Writer's Guild when I get some of it done. While there, I'd recommend reading the bio of Iron Horse, it's awesome.

Villains: Krazeek (SS/Elec Brute), Oblivion Probe (Bots/Dark MM), Officer Loveless (Stone/Regen Brute), Thrashcore (Sonic/Devices Blaster)
Im having an issue getting into Rp mostly because of the really totally off the wall things people advance as story lines. I could deal with most things, but plot lines like super farting and an attack from an army of super wrestlers under the command of cloned drow elves is a little far out there.
I have been hanging out in pocket D and was told that it is the cess pool of RP... I havent seen that, but is there somewhere else?
Im just getting furstrated, I had hoped to get into some hero and villan stuff, and maybe some drama or romance, but all i see are care bare stare plots and sam who wants to unite the slugs of the sewer to over throw the power of polly pocket.....
Ok so it isnt that bad, but i get all carried away, and you get the point.
Try an RP supergroup? I've never seen anything like you've described XD

Yeah, I haven't run into any of that, myself. More than anything I see a lot of transsexuals and MRP catgirls at the D than anything else.
Plugging into an RP-focused supergroup is a good route to go. Also, I've had remarkable luck, villain side at least, with meeting random RPers in PUGs thanks to the "RP Friendly!" tag I have in my temmate search comments.

Mature Role Play, aka cybersex please.
Oh.
Well to be honest I am poiting out the worst of a week in pocket D, so to be fair, it isnt always like that.
So adding RP freindly, good tip. I'll do that
In regards to finding a RP Super group, I dont see too many on the Sv threads that arent at at least 6 weeks old or so, are there any other boards, or is there just a luck factor getting into a good rp based group.
What is it with all the cat women? Is that like a furry thing?

There are stickied topics on this very board for Virtue-specific SGs.
Also, you can always put out a looking for SG post with what you're precisely looking for. Generally speaking most groups are on the look out for a new potential inductees.

Hello Virtue, i have to wonder when the unoffical status came?
i started playing a hair (like a week) after beta CoH.
and to play with a freind (the one that showed me beta) i started on justice, now I am a RPer heck been playing D&D with my brother since I was 7, like 20 years ago. And LARP's eversince his girlfriend a few years ago showed them to me.
Heck I even have my RP toon on justice a WS thats mute through her transformation into a warshade.
(much to the shock of those on justice)
I didn't even know most on CoX even though about RP to the point I've just about given it up.

I've just made an alt on this server, villain side, named Operative Schallwell. Coming from the RP server on WoW, Feathermoon, I'd like to be able to see some roleplay again.
[/ QUOTE ]
hey man i just noticed this. I was on feathermoon for like a year and roleplayed a lot. Switching to CoX was easy and i enjoy this game much better.
Great Guide man. It would definately help me if i didnt know a thing about Rping.
