  1. Sounds like a pist off sig/other or greedy "friend". You can try, but I don't see this going far depending on the exact circomstances. :-X

But if you are not otherwise patching, then the client may become unstable or unplayable at all after a patch.
Which will become just as simple as dragging it onto a host machine after every patch for patching and back again, but you'll need to keep an eye on the patch notes before hand.

Is there an echo in the room? j/k, I just find it cool when I manage to nail something like that. Looking again though, I'm wondering if the GPU's sufficient.

A GeForce 7800 GTX is not enough anymore, especially at the resolution you try to play at(1680x1050). The graphics card is probably overheating at that.
Just read this, yeah that'll cause just as much trouble. +1 on dropping resolution to say 1024x768 and completely disabling AERO (I'm shocked 7 hasn't even done that itself).

You're definitely low on memory. 2GB, in this day and age, is seriously pushing it (CoH is much more comfortable with 4GB). Especially if you're upgrading past XP (fortunately you're not on Vista, which was a bit heavier than 7). You also can't upgrade your RAM without upgrading to a 64 bit OS, seeing as your video card has so much, and the limitations of 32bit architectures.
Agreed, too low physical ram and not x64 will cause headaches with CoX.

I'm pretty sure this sums up the OP's desire as Admin should be for administrative content, not chatter. Place Event chatter in the Event channel (there IS such a channel right?).
  9. Or more simply put, give us the option to convert one token type to another. Perhaps add the ability to save up so many free tokens (5-10) to allow us to say open a single character slot. Better yet, save up more (10-20, idk at this point) and convert that to a PR token.
  10. As a test, disable your AV software for a few minutes and then try to run it. If it Works, then we'll have something easy to go by.
  11. Funny enough, I think I've settled on the Performance MX mouse as I started looking at the natural contour of my hand (because of the arthritis restrictions) and it seems to fit great. A little higher in $$, but I'm looking for a build to last 5-10yrs so it'll be worth it. I'm thinking that the KB will be the K750-Solar.
  12. Grr...after losing my primary laptop last month to GPU fix-failure my backup laptop's right hinge has broken (again). I guess this build's been pushed up. Too bad I shredded that latest Citibank offer for 0%/12mo CC. >.<

While passing by the options at work, this came to mind as well. I figured the alternative would be to run a USB extension cable (likely with a powered hub), but I became concerned about reaching the maximum USB length. Granted, they're only going to be USB 1.1 (low powered) devices when it comes down to it, but cable length does matter after a point. The biggest concern not necessarily being miniscule latency, but the ability to do things like hold multiple keys down and not overload the buffer (or worse, lose the command packet altogether). I've actually seen some with much of this taken into account as they're geared towards gaming as well, hense the price of half of them.
  14. I realize it's a mild step down, but what does 1920x1080 look like?
  15. Nothing's ringing a bell right off the bat, but I have experienced a similar issue on bad lag days. I did notice your memory related quandry. Well, I see it that way atleast.

I'm assuming you're running the x86/32bit version of Windows XP. You seem to have 3Gb of physical RAM and a GPU with 1Gb of VRAM. I'll try to describe what could be an issue.

From my understanding of Windows Memory allocations/equations, the OS starts with the GPU memory. In this case 1Gb. And then starts using up the onboard RAM. Depending on the system, you have a maximum of about 3.5Gb of total usable memory. With your situation this means that the first Gb of that is taken up by the GPU, leaving 2.5Gb for the OS and applications to share. While XP will likely take between 300Mb-756Mb, the game will try its best to take nearly 2Gb. If the OS is using more (I'm including everything but the game when talking about the OS using memory). Needless to say it's entirely possible that you may experience issues related to this.

P.S: look for HijackThis and CoH Helper in the forums and post that info here as well. the game doesn't use Direct X, but you are off to a better start than some.
  16. So I brought it up here, but figured I'd start a new thread to focus on actual players' experiences in case someone else has the same Q later. What have you tried? What should one avoid for gaming (the need to be able to press lots of keys at once accurately). Did you stay wireless? Why/Why Not?

If I'm the low-on-the-totem-pole toon in the group (usually a TF), then you're D# right I'm gonna set HA to auto and try to stay out of NPC melee range unless needed. With my arthritis, hitting HA everytime it recharges was killer.

Otherwise, Hasten is ALWAYS on auto nomatter the toon. There does come a point where the attack chain (IEverloading the KB's buffer with a million "hit them NOW" button presses) will prevent Hasten from shooting when recharged, but I normally just Esc the cue clear at that point and retarget.

  19. I 'think' there were ads for the first year or so and perhaps upto or a little after COV was released, but then nada. I guess the hope was that word of mouth and product on shelf would work. Marketing isn't cheap, but we did have some real cool "I'm a Hero, I'm a Villian" stuff too.

Adding some of the flexibility that a website offers ingame would help keep more people involved.
And this is why I came up with it. While I do like some of the nifty things that have come to pass with SG based websites there's always a catch. On of the groups I'm part of has one on a very common, game-centric portal. But I had to register, create some login (to add to my long list of login keys), and try to remember what that was. We ran into a problem and had to abandon said original page because the original SL equivalent (who basically held the keys to the page) had to leave for RL issues and we've yet to be able to get ahold of them after atleast 3-4yrs. Needless to say a second site was created, but the risk is there.

But for the record, the forum listed this thread as being started at 9:10pm on 04-27-2012 and your reply at 8:59pm on 04-28-2012.

Either way the records show Oldeb beating my post by 7 minutes, but that's likely because I open all the threads in tabs before I actually answer them so on My end it looked like I was first until the post refreshed the thread.

I remember you saying that now, but didn't realize that you actually left it on for said purpose. My Apple G4 has the app, but the poor thing only has a 1Ghz custom proc w/ 1Gb (or is it 2Gb, I always forget) of ram. I had to take it off the laptops due to the thermal issues.

Why did Weird Al's "When I was Your Age" just run through my head after reading that?
  24. While I normally deal with the nVidia versions of these laptops, the dv series is known for temperature issues under pressure. Especially the multimedia series. While I do agree with the two software monitoring links, I would like to add that the following two gadgets are great for on the fly (WinKey+D) temp/load checking:

All CPU Meter and GPU Meter from Addgadget.com

I find them to be more accurate (timely manner wise) than the others when going for a quick check. You can even see when your CPU/GPU are throttling up/down! Well that and a million other things about the hardware.

NeWay, if you're using a laptop cooler like I have to with my dv series, then make sure it's actually running. The USB cable on mine (it's a y-cable) tends to shift and cut power to it, but because my system fan is set to Full On, then I can't hear when it shuts off.

I dont' have a link, but there was a recall somewhere between 2009-2011 relating to the batteries. I forget the details, but check it out when you can. You can actually look up your exact build on HP's website.

There's a chance that it might be a driver stability issue considering it's an ATI card, but I'll leave that for the More-techy than I. That and I'm aiming more at the overheating as well. Try those gadgets and take note what the cold-boot-to-idle temps are as well as the "I just logged into the game and I'm sitting idle in atlas" temps. I'll tell you right now that the chip's probably overheating if the GPU sits at or above 60C ingame. The nVidia problems sometimes involved the actual on-chip solder reliquifying, thus the eventual blue screens and psychadelic trips.

    Other Thoughs:
You might wanna consider upgrading to Win7 Pro as it's usually less picky. Well, I'm generally not a fan of "Home" or limited functionality OS versions anyway, but it's a thought.

Just for the sake of optimization you might wanna up your swap file to the windows recomended amount as the game Loves to use upto 2Gb of physical/virtual memory. If you have the dough/desire, then upping that to 6-8Gb physical memory wouldn't hurt (actually it'd probably love it) assuming that's a newer model and not a maxed out older system.

  25. Making sure that you're otherwise safe (not surfing PRON at the same time, etc), you could try turning off your internet security apps. It's possible that they're blocking the install. I'd do that and try to reinstall/repair the installation.
