I've got nothing against our Euro brethren, and personally I'd be all for finding some way to improve their experience. I'd play on Union or Defiant. Heck, I'd play on the German server and practice my admittedly-horrid Deutsch. But the idea that NCSoft *owes* you better service rankles me. They provide a service. You pay to access it. Your recourse, should you not think the service worth the money, is to cease paying for and using it. I know that sounds callous, but that's capitalism for ya.

Yeah, we men are like that. Or so my wife says anyway.

    Ahem.

Tyrrano - Not so much evil as a big dinosaur. The Hulk, but with teeth. (I'd love to be able to run his slider to Jurrasik-size) So yeah, destructive, chaotic, but not really evil.

Nepharyte - His basic goal is to return the world to the Primal Darkness that spawned it. He doesn't want to *rule* the world so much as completely erase it (and himself) from existence. His tools are former humans twisted by his necrotic technology into grotesque mutant zombies. Hrm, yeah, that'd pretty much peg the Evil-o-meter.

Eden Raith - A succubus who devours life essence and considers humans as cattle. Not quite in Neph's league but still not someone I'm inviting to tea.

Speaks With Wind - A native american shaman, he's not evil at all, but the earth/earth dom set fit the concept, so he's waiting for side-switching.

I have a few other redsiders, but they're not really fleshed out enough yet to say evil/not evil.

And just because I'm an equal opportunity villain...
Inquisitor Malthus - my AR/fire blaster. Dedicated to stopping Nepharyte and his minions at any cost. Unfortunately when that cost includes accusing and "interrogating" innocents, she's proven to be quite OK with that. Where another 'hero' would try to cure the people twisted by Nepharyte's horrifying ministrations, Malthus will simply put them out of their misery to prevent them from carrying the taint. Some folks think that the citizens of Paragon are running from Hellions? Sometimes they're running because Malthus is walking down the street.

Is she evil? Yeah, probably so.
  5. I happened across this while reading a blog on Architectural Record's website. Thought you lot might find it interesting, too.

  6. Some days it surprises me that computer-based gaming works at all. There are *so* many things in the pipeline that can mess it all up. Consoles are so much easier - no eleventy-billion different rig configurations to deal with.

I think many of the issues around i17 are little things that have managed to raise the 'good gaming threshold' just enough to cause a host of problems for folks who were hanging out just under that threshold before.

That could also be a part of the reason why international players are seem to be experiencing a greater number of errors.

My favorite band is from England. They're not horribly popular, so they no longer play to big stadiums. And they were never very popular on this side of the Atlantic. Still, I pay my money when they release new music. I should have just as much opportunity to see them live as someone living in England. But no. If I'm lucky they come a couple of times a decade, usually to someplace like Montreal. Mind you, that's about a 25 hour drive from here. That's hardly fair, now is it?

    Unfortunately, life is rarely fair.

Most of those have simply asked folks to lay off bashing you. Only a few have expressed a real agreement with your premise.

For instance, did you assume I disagreed with your assertion and count me in the '26' that disagree? I quite pointedly expressed no opinion on it - I simply stated it looks like you got an answer.

That in and of itself tells me it's probably at least partially your end. Even if there is a problem at some level in a CoX server/ISP/etc., if it's only happening to a small percentage of clients then there has to be some portion of the problem stemming from the client.

Still doesn't mean that your system/ISP/etc. wasn't contributing to your issue. Heck, maybe you're one of those 'lucky' people who's personal Murphyonic field makes weird stuff happen to computers. Have you ever had trouble wearing quartz watches?

(I ask because my lovely wife can literally stop a quartz watch dead simply by holding it in her palm for a minute or so. Every time. It's strange. And trust me, her computer does really weird things when she uses it, especially if she's already upset or frustrated - things that it never does when I'm trying to debug it.)

The more information the better. I don't envy anyone tasked with trying to solve these types of issues - there's *so* many variables.

As for the original problem, the only times I've ever experienced this behavior it's always come down to a low memory condition. End result of one of the memory leaks discussed in other threads, perhaps?

If I can't drop the game in an instant without letting the team down, then I can't team. Beside's it is unfair to the team.
I'm in the exact same boat, but I find that being up-front about it works. I tell teams I'm on that spousal aggro and/or child spew/breakage/ambulance is always a minor possibility, and if I happen to go AFK I'll either be back in a few minutes or I'll post a brief goodbye and bail, depending upon the circumstances. Most teams are cool with that, and if they aren't I can always go back to soloing.

Now doing a TF is another thing - I won't sign up for that unless it's late enough that the kids and wife are all asleep and I can reasonably expect to finish and still get up for work the next day. Which explains why I've managed all of three TFs in 3 1/2 years.

  15. Lots of good advice in these posts. I'm actually an architect in my 'day job', and as you might expect the office interiors bug the livin' fire outta me. As for the buildings themselves, more variety and realism would be an improvement, though I agree that Faultline is *much* better than the older zones. More mixture of architectural styles, and how about sloped roofs on something besides warehouses? How about other large 'public' buildings - certainly a city the size of Paragon has a football stadium? A racetrack? A bus depot or train station (besides the Yellow and Green lines of course)

Feel free to PM me and I'll drop you my email address. I'd be happy to give specific advice almost anytime.

Something about the 'farm' areas in Croatoa is very appealing to me.

    Still love the Ski Chalet.

Yeah. Replace your video card. Actually, it's possible that new drivers *might* enable it, but I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Incidentally, I ran into this myself trying to play on a laptop from work. Mighty frustrating. :x

  20. Well, the first page and a half of this thread were entertaining.

While meeting with the surgeon last week, he mentioned that this was 'being worked on' - essentially he thought it was already in FDA trials, but whether it gets approved in 6 months or 6 decades is anyone's guess.

As for me, still rocking 20/12 in my good eye and 20/20 in my 'bad' eye at the ripe old age of 43 next month. Hopefully I can stave off the downhill slide until the presbyopia fix is in and just get it all done at once.

It's not like there's a guy standing there sticking a laser pointer in your eye. I think the chances of permanent eye injury are less in a lasik procedure than the chances of a hailstone hitting your glasses and driving a shard of glass into your eye.

I'm afraid my first thought was, if your new laptop doesn't have a CD drive, chances are it's not gonna be up to running CoX anyway. Hopefully for your sake I'm off the mark about that...
