Building a Fire/Fire tank... is guide still viable?

That guide should be fine, it was posted in February and there haven't been many/any changes to fire/fire since. Also, I'm fairly certain the author of the guide is still around, so you might try (politely) messaging him for some personal advice.

I would personally go for a build with tough and weave. Then again I take tough on pretty much every character with status protection.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

You are missing several key ingrediants in that build...I am at work right now, so do not have the ability to log into Pyro Beetle, but let me just say this...

Consider what you need in a single target attack chain, then eliminate all else...

Consider what you need in a AoE attack chain, then add those powers...

Fire/Fire tanks are great AoE tanks, your goal is to kill things before they kill you. If you are relying on single target attacks, then you are going to have problems.

I may have posted an IO build (can't remember if it was here or on the SG website) about a year ago...not much on the budget side, but it does the trick.

A couple of quick notes:

You have no kb protection at all and you'll be getting bounced around quite a bit without. One option is to find a Steadfast -kb IO and stuff it in somewhere replacing a end redux in one of your resist powers early. (Typically you should shoot for either 4 (minimum) or 12 kb protection as anything below 12 doesn't cover what would be the worst kb in the game. ) Another option would be to grab Combat Jumping and put the Karma -kb protection in there. Nice thing about CJ is that it does provide Immob. protection and without burn you don't have any. A third option is Acrobatics, but with the advent of IO's most don't go that route anymore.

Temperature protection is really only going to be getting you 12% cold resistance and 20% slow status resistance as you'll already be capped to fire resist. If you could live without this power you could replace it with Combat Jumping, but at an earlier time.

When should i be looking to IO my build? When should i put CJ in, or should i just start doing IO's ? i plan to do more at 50 but can't afford it right now. Or should i re-socket for burn? And i would need atleast 4 IO's but should really get 12?

On my Fire/** Tankers, I usually take Combat Jumping at 10 and Super Jump at 14 and never take Hasten, but YMMV.

I usually start looking at IOs at level 27, but don't get into them seriously until level 32. It depends on the character and how much cash I have lying around.

Be Well!

I'm not sure that putting two extra slots in CJ does much for you. Those two slots only increase your defense by 0.9%. You'll be better off putting those slots in powers that can accept IO sets that will give you additional defense. It's possible to soft-cap Smash/Lethal defense with Fire/Fire/Pyre, though it's expensive (requiring pricey sets like Kinetic Combat and Obliteration, though you can also use Mocking Beratement and Enfeebled Operation which are very cheap).

You'll probably want to put something like Karma: -KB in your Combat Jumping, and Steadfast: -KB in or two of your armors. Not getting KBed makes being a tanker much more fun.

I was reviewing my fire2 build earlier and comparing Combustion and Burn. Seriously considering switching to Burn at my next respec. If Mids is to be believed, it does considerably more damage for less END. Am I reading that right?

12 pts of KB Protection is overkill for all but 1% of the PvE content. 8 pts will do you for the VAST majority of the game.

And btw, for the record, I leveled my fire/fire tank to 50 pre-IOs, with fight not leaping.

Get both, AoE is your friend, and Burn is still more situational than combustion. But both are good.

My problem is trying to understand if i even need hasten if not ok yeah ill drop it for CJ/SJ, but im just trying to figure out where im throwing those 2 other sockets, could someone post the changes to my build so i can see what you mean?

As for Burn/Combustion what should i drop to get them both w/o losing def/resists?

I'd prefer to keep SS but /shrug, if making/getting kb io's is honestly easier, and keeping hasten is worthwhile then i'd much prefer to do that... i don't know just confused about the whole IO situation as it is O.o

Would it work better if i took tough/weave/acro earlier?

I'll agree to disagree concerning 4 kb. Every discussion I've seen concerning kb has pretty much come to the conclusion that you won't see a difference between having 4 vs 8 kb protection. I do agree that shooting for 12 covers a very small percentage of the PvE content. Which again goes back to my 4 vs. 12kb.

Which would you as a player prefer: Combat Jumping/Super Jump vs. Hasten/Super Speed? Both bring different things to the table.

Looking at your latest build it looks like you're not getting enough end redux in your attacks. Although it may seem like your biggest end usage is in your toggles, you'll burn through it faster with your attacks.

As for the -kb IO's I'd try and grab a Steadfast -kb IO as soon as you can and place it either in Fire Shield or Plasma Shield. If I recall correctly you can get them as low as a level 10 recipe. Anywhere up to a level 17/18 should cover you should you ever exemplar down for the Posi tf in the future.

I've tweaked your build a little throwing in 3 IO's. This will give you a little more defense, some kb protection and a touch more to hit. If you feel you're not getting enough kb protection you can add an additional steadfast in tough. If you want to free up a slot from somewhere else you could add another in Plasma Shield. If you feel like getting more IO's along the way there are certainly other suggestions that can be made.

You'll want to get the four Accolades I've marked on the build as they'll help with +end and +hp, which will in turn improve recovery and recharge.

Although I swapped out Temp. protection for Burn at lvl 49, you'll probably want it much earlier. Possibly in the early 20's, but that's up to you. You'll get a feel for it as you level up.

Just some food for thought. It's been a while since I've just done a build with SO's and minimal IO's.

I totally plan on IO'ing i just need to level and get the money for it hehe. Im really not seeing how i could put Burn in w/o screwing up sockets on fire sword, tough, incinerate and greater fire sword later on.

In my opinion leaving tough until 32 is a mistake. I would move Consume and Fire Sword out further, unless this is a solo tank. In a team you will die OFTEN with Tough at 32 - I usually take it at 14.

Fire is the weakest of all of the tanks. It requires serious dedication to get to the 30's where it becomes stronger and then late in the game it is much weaker than all the other tanks.

I know people are going to chime in and say my fire tank did this and blah, blah, blah - however if you IO out any other tank and play them the Fire tank dies first every single time - except for Ice tanks who with so much defense can have a luck breakdown and insta-gib.

Your team buffs really matter with fire, a group of nazi's with slows can stop you from healing completely - then you die - but that Kin of bubbler saves your bacon.

Personally a Fire/Fire tank is a slightly tougher scrapper with less damage in my opinion. Without the knockdown, stuns or other mitigation, everything hits you and you can be dead before you know it. I always use SS and as a vet skip hasten. Often late in the game I will get Heal other and heal self for my Fire tank.

I do use Burn often and I wish they would remove the panic, but the sins of Fire tankers past still haunt us and so we get no love. We asked for knockback protection in Temp pro and a bit of DEFENSE 5% or so and were denied. I have stopped making fire aura tanks/scrappers and instead use dark and color it like fire.

Ummm, no. Actually, not just no, but Hell No! If you need Tough at 14, you're doing it wrong. If you're on a team and dying 'often', then your Team is doing it wrong - and so are you.

While a Fire/** Tanker is still a Tanker and perfectly capable of doing a Tanker's job, the strategy and tactics are different. You don't play a Fire/** like a Stone/**. Fire is Dynamic, you don't just plunk yourself down in the middle of the mob and taunt-bot your damage-sponge to victory! You also don't join a PL team expecting your lowbie tanker to be able to perform at 50+ level - the game doesn't work that way.

Despite not doing everything the way _I_ would, Neofusion has the critical bits in the right places.

Be Well!

No disagreement here.

Sort of bumping this. My fire/fire tanker was my main from prior to issue-1 through when I left the game just after issue-7. Since coming back, she is in a sad place, so I will need to rework her. This thread has some good info, but wasnt it mentioned some time ago that the Devs were going to look over the fire defense set, has anything been talked about since then? At this point I am still stunned how this set has been shafted over the years. I could swallow having minimal def/resist (when compared to other tankers) do to the massive offense Burn offered (pre-nerf) but something needs to be done to bring everything back inline.

If anyone has some new builds please post them.

Thanks in advance. JV

There have been no significant changes to Fire, lately. This post, and the guide by Grey Pilgrim represent the current state of the art.
