Having trouble connecting tonight?
Yup, just "Connecting.. #3" now. Tried a few times so far. Bleh.
Also on Roadrunner in Buffalo NY.
On the PC you can try running ipconfig /flushdns at a command prompt and trying the updater again.
You can try this multiple times.
Another thing you can do is create an additional shortcut and bypass the updater.
If you need to run the updater to apply a patch you can use the original shortcut.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh
Change the path as required for your setup. Also note it's CityOfHeroes.exe and not CohUpdater.exe.
On the PC you can try running ipconfig /flushdns at a command prompt and trying the updater again.

Right now I'm bypassing the updater entirely when it's stuck, and I've contacted support. It seems like Time Warner is blocking something at its Chicago node that's preventing the updater from working, but due to the dynamic nature of traffic routing I can't really say for sure.

I almost hate for this to be my returning post, after so long away from the game, But I've tried to Flushdns, Triple checked the ports on my router, Unplugged and reset both my router and Sat. Modem.
The only thing new for me, Is I bought an additional copy off of Steam last night. It Downloaded fine, But the updater, just refuses to connect. I know last year, I could just launch about 30 updaters, and eventually one would connect, but that doesn't even work.
Even launching from steam, instead of the COH updater, has the same problem.
I've ran the net tool, but while it says it can connect to every server, This whole thing has me befuddled.
Please tell me you fine people have another suggestion for an old returning player?
~Stephen
Stephen, have you tried downloading the client from your PlayNC Master Account? This link should do it...
I've never used Steam, but I've seen a lot of people posting that they have issues after downloading via Steam. I've seen quite a few post that they didn't have issues in reply, but we all know no two computers are the same.

Biggest Troll on the forums? I'll give you a hint:
I have indeed in the past, and I recently tried it again. Still with the connection problems, but not quite the same problems as going through Steam.
I figure I will go ahead and do that tonight, and see how it goes. In fact that is how I used to get the game going, was directly from the DL here, and then mass launch it until something took.
Thanks for the advice , Been away far to long, and I'm curious to see the new changes.
The last Episode/Issue I remember, was we where going to get shields.
Stephen
To actually get into the game even if you have the updater connect issue, follow Fitzsimmons' instructions above for PC.
For Mac:
1. Open Terminal located in Applications > Utilities.
2. Type one of the two following commands:
If your City of Heroes data files are located in City Of Heroes.app > Contents > Resources > transgaming > Program Files > City of Heroes:
/Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider -- cityofheroes.exe -project coh
If your City of Heroes data files are located in City Of Heroes.app > Contents > Resources > transgaming > coh:
/Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider -- cityofheroes.exe -project coh

There in lies one problem I'm having PC BTW.
I don't have a cityofheroes.exe. Just the COHUpdater, even after I backed up the steam install, removed it, and started over from scratch with the link Kheldarn just supplied.
If I remember correctly, even on the updater, or adding the -project.coh line to the other .exe, one would see some kind of graphic on the update window. I'm not even seeing that right now.
Been using TweakCOH to try and figure out the problem here. For example...

I know the ping times look pretty bad, but that was normal for me even when I used to play. I've even removed the router completely out of the equation at this point, by going directly Modem to PC.
Now when I try to connect directly to the same update server, I can.

Please wait....

I can't help but wonder, if it's due to Memorial day weekend, lots of people having the weekend to play, so it might possibly be congestion. I do appreciate all the advice, so please, keep the ideas coming if at all possible.
~ a very grateful Stephen

To every one in this thread, If you are ever in Oklahoma, just for helping me, you get a free steak dinner on me.
Of course, I own a small ranch, so it won't cost me anything.
you all have my profound respect, and humble appreciation.

I've learned that apparently Steam is not working at all this weekend. Hopefully they'll fix the problem soon, but at least you can use the standalone CoH to play in the meantime.

Biggest Troll on the forums? I'll give you a hint:
Hey thanks Tyrrano. I played a bit when the game first came out, then again last year. I really love this game, but most of my friends went and got hooked on WOW. But times change, most of them have went on to other things, so I felt it time to revisit this game.
LOL, this is like my third account I have bought, I don't know why I don't just update and restart my other two.
oh, and Bacon goes well with everything.
anyways, Slow download last night, barely got 1 gig of it DL'd, but I seem to remember, that it took me a few nights, to get it all anyways. (I think they have a lot of traffic on their end, so it slows down)

I created a shortcut for the 'flush dns' command and put it in the Quickstart taskbar. (I only have the recycle icon on my desktop. I use my Quickstart to lauch programs.)
Right-click on your desktop and open new>shortcut.
Type %windir%\system32\ipconfig.exe /flushdns in the blank space. Hit 'next'
Type in the name of your choice. (Flush DNS, IPCONFIG, etc.) Hit 'finish'
This makes it a lot easier than opening up the Run command and typing it in every time.

Darndest thing, I can't connect to any update servers tonight to finish the game download. Been trying to connect since about 12:45 this morning. Oh well, Keep trying I suppose.

Oddly enough a few minutes ago I got up to 16 attempts on my mac
Rebooted and connected right away
Try using the EU servers, sounds like what i suffer with on a constant basis.
The connection to the german based servers has been well documented as poor yet we still have to live with it.
All the problems i am having in game i suspect shhh ! are down to the crappy connection we get here.
I was seeing an intermittent patch server connection issue that seems to have become full time now (both on the Mac and on the PC, so computer configuration is not the problem).
Already notified support of the issue, and ran a traceroute. It seems the traffic is being stopped en route to the CoH patch server.
I'm just wondering how many others are experiencing the issue (if you are, contact support as well) and which ISP you're using. I'm using Time Warner's Roadrunner, so if a lot of other people are using the same one I'm giving them a call.
