  1. According to the March Producer's Letter:
    Quote:
We will also be giving you a free repsec with the Anniversary celebrations at the end of April...
I know they said the in-game events would be next month, but I don't know if those count as the celebrations at the end of April seeing as they will be in May.

I'm not in any rush to get them. I just wondered because I already have plans for using the respecs on several characters. Issue 20 has shown us how much of a grind the Incarnate system will be and I feel the need to consolidate my characters down to three primary Incarnates. The characters I need the respecs for are in the process of being stripped of IOs.
  2. Long forum export takes up a lot of space on the page. When posting a build for others to review in Mids', the data chunk is all you really need to post.

I seem to need to repeat my mini-INF-making alignment merit guide a lot today...
    Quote:
IO sets are more affordable than you think. No build is out of your reach, unless you just don't put forth the effort. Yes, purple sets are extremely expensive. However, there are equivalent non-purple sets that offer a lesser recharge bonus, and using those won't break the build.

You can gather INF in short periods of play time. You don't even need a "farming" character to get started. Some people don't like playing the market because it is risky and it takes a decent amount of INF to get started. I suggest doing tip missions and collecting Hero or Villain merits.

You can easily gather tips in Terra Volta by killing grey-con bosses. The trip there is fast if your SG base has the teleporter for it. That should take less than 5 minutes. On villain side, the island in the South-East part of Sharkhead has a good amount of level 20 bosses on it. Next, stealthing or running to the objectives for each mission should take less than 5 minutes per mission. Once you learn which tip missions are annoying or hard for you to do quickly, you can dismiss them while in Terra Volta so you only get the tips you want to do. Overall, it should take you about 30 minutes per day to do tip missions as long as you're not using Fly as a travel power. It may take you longer at first, but the speed will come as you learn the mission layouts and learn which ones to skip. Do the morality mission when your alignment is full. If you're on Hero side, the alignment mission that has you fight your mysterious double is significantly easier and faster than the one requiring you to rescue a bane spider.

After four days, you should have two Hero or Villain Merits. Turn those into a Luck of the Gambler: Global Recharge IO and craft it and sell it on the market. That should get you about 150 million INF. Do that three to five times and you will have more than enough INF to get your character into almost any IO set build as long as it doesn't have purples or PvP IOs. There are other IOs worth buying but the market changes all the time and I don't have time to look up what is the most valuable. The point is that almost any character is capable of earning enough INF in a short amount of time per day. You don't have to already have a "farming" character to make enough INF to get into the IO market.

As far as your build goes, you need to read about enhacement diminishing returns on Paragon Wiki. Basically, slotting more than 3 generic IOs of the same type is a waste of slots.

Your toggles have no endurance reduction and you will be suffering due to that.

I will post my Scrapper Super Reflexes template again to show an efficient way to reach the soft cap (45%) for defense. This may not be the absolute best way to do it, but it isn't expensive and it leaves plenty of slots for other bonuses you may want. The important thing to keep when adapting this to suit your build are the toggles, how they are slotted, and the defense set bonuses. The Luck of the Gambler sets don't have to be in your build right away, but they provide the most benefit for those seeking to do DPS.

While leveling with this build, don't worry too much about IO sets until 47. Stock up on purple inspirations at the hospital when you get a chance and one purple should get you to the soft cap when you really need it.

  3. Syntax42

    My next brute

Against All Odds is a VERY good taunt aura, even on Scrappers. Sometimes Tankers can't pull aggro off my DM/SD.

I liked not having the "gogogo" mentality for a while. I still wanted to jump into spawns and kill fast, but it was nice to not feel like a slow team would slow down the pain train. The increasing damage is what made DM/SD feel so familiar to Brutes. The more enemies around you, the better damage you do.
  4. Syntax42

    Is jab worth it?

That must have been what I was thinking of. My only Super Strength character is SS/Fire.
  5. Power color customization is amazing. Almost any sets you pick can be colored to give your character the multi-element theme you are looking for. Dark Armor might be the easiest, though. You could color your damage aura red for fire. Cloak of Darkness could be white for wind. Ice Melee would give you water. Fire APP would give you fire. Heart could be a red effect of Dark Armor's toggles.
  6. If you can achieve 32.5% positional defenses, you could have a pretty tough tanker and still do decent damage. It would require investing in IO sets, but it is worth the effort. Use the alignment system to farm Hero Merits if you want an easy way to make INF without marketeering. I posted in another thread a few more details about how to do tip missions efficiently on hero side.
  7. Syntax42

    My next brute

I used to be addicted to Brutes until I played a DM/SD Scrapper. Not having to build up Fury just to do damage made things a lot easier. Instead, I was looking for the biggest cluster of enemies so I could do as much damage as possible with AAO and Soul Drain buffing me.

Scrappers really do deal more damage than Brutes in most situations. A Kinetics just brings out the difference in base damage even more. Just consider one, at least.

Boxing can also take that set. Most people take Tough and Weave anyways.

OP: You can look at powers in a few different ways. In Mids', go to Window, then Powerset Comparison. The most used comparison is damage per animation time because this determines DPS of an attack chain. Mids' displays it as "Damage / Anim". Jab is the worst attack available for DPA.

Another thing to consider is damage per endurance, but they are generally balanced for a set unless a power does more than single-target damage. This leads to the last thing to consider. Status effects like stuns and knockdowns are useful. Be sure to hover your mouse over the effect to see the chance of it occurring. For Jab, it is only 10%, which isn't very reliable. The magnitude is also too low to stun anything higher than a LT.

I would not take Jab. In top-end DPS builds, Punch is even too low of DPS to use. Gloom and other Epic pool powers are better for DPS than Punch or Jab.
  9. The cap is 10% resistance, which is a stack of four. I believe that is the same for all of the other proc effects.
  10. There are no "bad" combos. Every set just works differently. Some are better at certain things than others. Some sets or combos require more team support to tank certain AVs, but they can all do it with the right team setup and strategy. If all else fails, inspirations can cover a lot of gaps for a limited time.

Willpower / Ice will be good at regeneration and slowing the rate of attacks. Ice Melee isn't a very damaging set, so you will be relying on teammates to kill things. Willpower has high regeneration when enemies are in range, and Ice Melee's recharge debuffs will ensure enemies don't hit very often so your regeneration is more effective. Ice Patch will be your best friend when you get it. Freezing Touch will allow you to hold a boss when double-stacked, but that requires some recharge and hold enhancements.

Overall, it should be just fine for tanking groups of regular enemies. AVs will resist a lot of the recharge debuff, but some is better than none.

  13. I would donate it to charity. There are so many homeless wandering around Paragon City!

Seriously, though, there is almost no reason I can think of to have that much. The most expensive builds cost 10-15 billion, depending on PvP IOs and purple prices. Most characters don't need anything that nice, though. I would probably dump it all into prestige just to get rid of it.

    SS/SR help?

I have a Super Reflexes Scrapper template that shows how to efficiently hit the soft cap (45%) for defense. Brutes are nearly identical to Scrapper armor sets. Keep in mind this isn't the only way to do it. I just show how it can be done using any primary set with the goal of using as few slots as possible and not using PvP IOs or purple sets.

  15. Reactive appears to do damage every time it procs, or renews the stack of DoTs. Dropping a Burn patch on a pylon (or any other fast-attacking power) is the easiest way to see this. Your combat log will fill up with almost as many Reactive damage ticks as your other damage ticks. If the debuff had to fade before another could be applied, there would be noticeable gaps in the proc damage frequency.

The only advantage the OP's attack chain has is the faster animation times of the set. DoT effects do not trigger the Interface procs because they are not counted as separate attacks. Burn and other patch effects are different because the pseudopet "attacks" several times per second.

I do not believe the faster animation times are enough to make a lesser attack chain catch up to a top attack chain. It is only about 10 damage and the other attack chain would be triggering procs with only slightly less frequency.
  16. It sounds like you think Super Strength has some sort of unbeatable advantage over the other sets. While it does have a nice buff from Rage, other sets have nice features too. Dark Melee has an endurance restore power and self-heal that can help with Dark Armor's heavy endurance cost. Fiery Melee has more AoE attacks than other sets. Stone Melee has two AoE knockdowns.

If you expect to team more than solo, you should focus on surviving and holding aggro. A Tanker does not do as much AoE damage as other ATs and is not expected to be the minion-killer on teams. Your taunt aura and taunt power are generally enough to hold aggro long enough for the team to destroy the soft targets quickly. While Tanker AoE is not useless, you will feel like you can't contribute much to the AoE damage when everything around is getting destroyed so fast by everyone else.

If you expect to solo and farm more than anything else, there are much better ATs and combinations for that. If you really like Dark Armor and have fun with it, I would say pick Fiery Melee for the extra AoE attack.

I just tested Burn again. My last post was based on what I observed in the combat log before today's patch. Now, the Burn patch does properly trigger Reactive procs.

However, Fiery Embrace does not boost the damage done by the Burn patch. It only boosts the damage done in the initial hit. I can't say for sure if it worked that way before the patch.
  18. I just tried to go to http://www.cityofheroes.com and I get the error 403: forbidden message. Wow, the web server is messed up today. I only wanted to read the patch notes...
  19. Interface procs seem to be bugged for pseudopets. I watched my combat log carefully as Burn ticked away on a Pylon. I did not see more than a few ticks of the Reactive proc. It should have been going off for almost every tick of the burn patch.
  20. If you don't have a better power to take, Dark Consumption makes a decent set mule for PBAOE sets. Did you look into Epic or Ancillary pool powers? Most of those pools have an AoE attack.

The island in the South-East part of Sharkhead. It has some sort of ice bosses around the cliffs. There are plenty of Sky Raider bosses around the runway. It is nowhere near as good as a hazard zone on Hero side, but it is the best place I found for killing level 20-30 bosses on Villain side.

  23. I just tested this on my SS/Fire Brute. I can confirm that FE does not add damage to Boxing. It does work on Gloom, so I assume it works properly on Ancillary/Epic pool powers.

One attack that isn't working with FE is not a good reason to skip Tough and Weave. Maybe we can help you with your build if you are using Boxing as an attack. By level 50, you should have enough attacks to never need it. While leveling, some builds take their attacks later and focus on survivability powers early on. Using boxing while leveling is not an issue, but you shouldn't need to use it at 50.
  24. I do not like the new morality or alignment missions. They have too many bugs and poorly-organized objectives. I usually farm more bosses in Terra Volta until I get the tips I want.

I have done that one and I do remember the Arbiter having a full spawn that I had to kill. It sounds like you weren't close enough to his spawn point for the fortunata to aggro you too.
  25. Make sure your video card driver is up to date. I don't follow ATI, so it may be.

Overheating or a hardware fault can cause your video card driver to stop working, but so can faulty software. Try to verify all files using the launcher. I think a dev posted the command line switch to do that with the new launcher.
