Farming character (for a semi noob)

Greetings all. I've recently returned to CoX after some time away (about close to 3 years) and I'm looking to get back into the swing of things. Frankly I am simply overwhelmed by the things added since I left, invention sets, epic sets, incarnate powers, trials and task forces and it's all a bit daunting. I also see that the only 50's I have, which are a ss/stone brute and a fire/rad controller are both horribly underpowered from what I remember, I realize this is due to them coming from a time period where a few SOs and maybe a hami here and there was all you needed to function. I'm floored however as I see posts of builds with various IO sets which push the character really beyond the mundane and make them close to the "super" characters I remember from when i first started playing this game.

However, the issue is that I can't even come close to affording "any" of those goodies, not to mention after playing my stone armor brute for a few minutes, without my former kinetic partner who stopped playing before I did, it was god awful and i wanted to tear my eyes out. So I am looking to start a new farming main who can help crank out some infamy. Brutes have always been my favorite archtype as they never feel dull when their fury bar is going full throttle. That said I would like to make one to get started on my road to affording all those shinies, which means I need to work on a combo for someone starting out with a limited budget. Thematically (yes, I'm one of those people) I do like the look of shield defense, and was wondering how good it would be for a beginner farmer and if there were any build suggestions. I am open to other suggestions as well, but shield really does look interesting, I understand it doesn't have a damage aura, but from what i've been reading that could possibly be patched by taking things like mu mastery or pyre correct? In any case, any help would be appreciated.

There are tons of threads on this subject already, I suggest you look around.

I see 7 other threads with "Farm" in the title, on the first page of the Brute forums alone.

Pelvic Thunder - SS/Elec/Mu Brute

SS/Fire brutes seem to be the king of farming these days and there is a good reason for that. I don't have one myself, but I've been told it is a capable farmer on SOs alone. Shield is also a good pick for farming because it gives you another large AOE attack (Shield Charge). I farm very little, but when I do I use my main who is an electric/shield brute and he is amazing.

As far as making influence goes, farming isn't the best way to get rich quick. I would suggest perusing the market forums and read some of the guides over there. The ones by Fulmens are the best IMO. It's very easy to get very rich just by playing the market a little every day.

Also, you have the option of earning alignment merits to cash in for valuable IO recipes. To earn these you need to run 10 tips (5 per day) and then you will get a morality mission. Completing the morality mission will award you 1 alignment merit. 2 A-merits can be cashed in for an LOTG global recharge which will fetch 200 million on a good day.

Welcome back to the game and good luck getting reaquainted. There is a lot to be excited about in CoX land these days .

I did read those posts, I've read many posts on the subject. The issue is that those threads all assume a person with limitless infamy to toss about. I do not have that luxery yet which is why i was looking for suggestions for a person starting down the road to the endeavor.

Another thing about Super Strength/Fire brutes, they have been known to accomplish amazing feats outside of farming. Somewhere on these forums there is a thread from a gentleman who soloed the Statesman Task Force with his. Pretty impressive stuff.

Elec/Shield is good, but it is a one trick pony. ST damage on elec/shield is pretty weak. SS gives a good balance of ST and aoe. After talking about it here, my altoholism is tingling. Must.....make.....SS/fire......brute........

Then you should have posted that question the best farming thread, or some other thread.

Ah thats a very good point. SS/fire is actually amazing outside of farming, see the sig, if you have the inf to invest. However, will need to use a different build for farming and normal PvE imo. My SS/fire was originlly only going to be a farm toon to get cash for my SS/WP and other toons. Now he is my main and best toon at TFs by far, ive been wanting to try out the STF but dont want to lose frenzy >.<

I'm not into farming nowadays, but I'd say if you're dead-set on a farm toon on a very limited budget it's still hard to beat a good ol' Fire/Kin controller. Get one set up in a mission against enemies that don't mez (like the old Battle Maiden mission) and you're good to go even on SOs.

I believe the main appeal of SS/Fire is in AE farms, since you can opt to go up against enemies that have all fire-based attacks, which you're strongest against. Or if you want to be able to get purple drops, get old Demon farm mission.

But like an earlier post said, if your main goal is to make inf, it's easiest via the market. It's also easy to run a few alignment missions a day, then earn a Hero or Villain Merit. You can use 2 of those to purchase expensive recipes and cash those in too.

Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.

No build is out of your reach, unless you just don't put forth the effort. Yes, purple sets are extremely expensive. However, there are equivalent non-purple sets that offer a lesser recharge bonus, and using those won't break the build.

You can gather INF in short periods of play time. You don't even need a "farming" character to get started. Some people don't like playing the market because it is risky and it takes a decent amount of INF to get started. I suggest doing tip missions and collecting Hero or Villain merits.

You can easily gather tips in Terra Volta by killing grey-con bosses. The trip there is fast if your SG base has the teleporter for it. That should take less than 5 minutes. On villain side, the island in the South-East part of Sharkhead has a good amount of level 20 bosses on it. Next, stealthing or running to the objectives for each mission should take less than 5 minutes per mission. Once you learn which tip missions are annoying or hard for you to do quickly, you can dismiss them while in Terra Volta so you only get the tips you want to do. Overall, it should take you about 30 minutes per day to do tip missions as long as you're not using Fly as a travel power. It may take you longer at first, but the speed will come as you learn the mission layouts and learn which ones to skip. Do the morality mission when your alignment is full. If you're on Hero side, the alignment mission that has you fight your mysterious double is significantly easier and faster than the one requiring you to rescue a bane spider.

After four days, you should have two Hero or Villain Merits. Turn those into a Luck of the Gambler: Global Recharge IO and craft it and sell it on the market. That should get you about 150 million INF. Do that three to five times and you will have more than enough INF to get your character into almost any IO set build as long as it doesn't have purples or PvP IOs. There are other IOs worth buying but the market changes all the time and I don't have time to look up what is the most valuable. The point is that almost any character is capable of earning enough INF in a short amount of time per day. You don't have to already have a "farming" character to make enough INF to get into the IO market.
