Game Crashing Video Card Driver
Make sure your video card driver is up to date. I don't follow ATI, so it may be.
Overheating or a hardware fault can cause your video card driver to stop working, but so can faulty software. Try to verify all files using the launcher. I think a dev posted the command line switch to do that with the new launcher.
I am running City of Heroes on a desktop computer with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and an ATi Radeon HD 5850 video card, with the 11.1 video card driver. Everything has been running smooth as silk, until two weeks ago.
I rolled up a new red side Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptor, and was running the toon on some missions. Specifically, the Origin of Power mission arc from Ashley McKnight. When I reached one of the people she sent me off to talk to, the dialog window popped up, but it was empty. The game then froze, and about five seconds later, both of my monitors blinked, and the game crashed. Then a message popped up indicating that my display device driver stopped working, and had been restarted. I thought this was odd, but it was the first time it happened, so I just wrote it off.
On Saturday, the same exact scenario occurred again while talking with a contact in Sharkhead Isle.
Yesterday, I was running Dean MacArthur's mission arc, and went to talk to Lt. Chalmers. Sure enough, the dialog window opened, but it was empty. A few seconds later, the game crashed, both monitors flickered, and then a message popped up stating that the display device driver stopped working, and had been restarted. I rebooted my machine, relaunched City of Heroes, and played some more. About 15 minutes later, I pulled up my Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptor's contact list, and boom. Another game crash with a "display device driver stopped working, and had been restarted" message.
I don't know what's going on here. I've been playing with the same setup for months now, and everything has been working fine until two weeks ago when I started heavily playing this new red side Corruptor. :\
I did some Googling, and apparently the "display device driver stopped working and had been restarted" message often indicates that the motherboard is overheating. I'm going to find and install a temperature monitoring utility tonight, but any other advice would be appreciated.
