That said, I don't see why people DON'T diversify servers. I'm not shooting down the idea, since I wouldn't argue with more slots, but it's not that hard to get started on another server. Use it for retired characters. Use it for villains or praetorians. Have people you like playing with? Bring them over with you to kickstart a new SG with a new theme. Meet new people.

    But that's just me.

Frankly, I don't think (certainly hope we won't) see a targeted AOE heal. If we do, I'd hope it would have enough of an END cost/recharge/be a poor enough heal that it wouldn't encourage people to just sit back and spam it - rockin' the (risk-free) remote aura, if you will. And I really doubt we'd see it on a mastermind set.

The game's not difficult as it is. We don't need an even bigger dose of easymode slapped on it.

Don't tempt them. We'll have Null the Gull take over from Statesman, but you'll have to fight some Praetorians and get permission from the Bucket of Annoyance to do anything with him.

Seconding the "You're doing it wrong." IN fact, if that's the issue you're having, you're doing it VERY wrong. As in trying to fly by jumping off a cliff wearing swim fins, a lead suit and cement shoes wrong.

    PEBKAC.

Post the build, post what you're doing, go through the guides people have made (there are several good ones.)

You'll see it as you try to put in the enhancement, as I recall.

And getting respecs tends to be easy. If nothing else, wait for the next issue. Big changes to a few powersets and to the Stalker AT = practically guaranteed freespec.

I'd suggest a gentle reminder as you try to 4 slot something like Stamina (which can only use 1 enhancement type), telling you about ED.
... which ignores IOs. Yes, you can only use one enhancement type (EndMod,) BUT there are multiple *sets* you may want to 4, 5, or 6 slot for for various reasons, from the +END proc to the set bonuses.

And 100% agree to the ST rezzes.

    1. lol @ "easy."

    2. Why would a graphics option be a "Null the Gull option" as opposed to being in the tailor? That would be like saying you can alter your costume at a trainer or at icon, except for head options which need to be done at the Science stores.

And for Power Pool customization, Who cares about the rest? What can they do with Tactics, Assault, and Stealth ect.....

    Not alot.
Search. People have asked for alternate/minimum FX options, permanently attaching one of the Flypose options to flight, etc. for other powers for at least as long. Just because YOU may not care about the others doesn't mean other people don't.
  8. Please don't do that. Leave the question up, and reply or edit with the response you got, as others may be wondering the same thing.
  9. I don't agree with any of that, to be really frank. Except perhaps the option of auto-finding a server - as long as the player *KNOWS* it's going to the lowest population (at that time) server.

Population "imbalances" between sides only really matter in PVP-based games, and you'll see incentives and server merges for those games to keep that balance going. (And by PVP based, I don't mean "it has some form of PVP," but that "PVP is a core component of the game" - to where character advancement requires PVP to finish missions and the like.)
  10. Better (and more true) than the original StickInTheMud post.

Like in the case of DVDs (sometimes I want a specific one out of the set and they don't sell it separately), food (sometimes X comes with Y and the restaurant won't substitute Z, nor sell their food ala carte), service plans (sometimes I want a specific set of services, but no such limited package exists) - I see it every day, and every day I make my choice and move on without thinking that the people presenting that choice are in some way cheating me by doing so.
Not a great example - unfortunately, a lot of real-world examples are lousy with this.

For instance, suppose I want the second Indiana Jones movie. My local merchant only has the Indiana Jones Three-and-lets-not-talk-about-it pack. With them, I have the *option* of going to ebay, or going to amazon.com or any number of other merchants *to* get what I want (plus price shop and the like.) The only result is that merchant doesn't get my business for that item.

For COH and these costume packs... show me where else I can go to get the costumes without the silliness of the packs. The only alternative is "You don't get my business."

    Of course, there's this attitude:

If it's not something of interest to you, why are you complaining about people complaining? Some people want as many costume options as they can get. For them, it IS an important part of the game, and this is a frustrating, irritating way to get to those parts (just like having gun skins drop from *one* trial, and be fairly rare last I looked for them on the market.)

"Required" is a strawman. You can play the game in nothing but basic Tights. However, costumes bring some people (quite a few, I'd guess, given how the costume creator is praised) a great deal of enjoyment. The choice is "enjoy the game, but be anything from disappointed to annoyed at the way these parts are going to be supplied because there's no guarantee of anything but spending money" or "enjoy the game more because there's an alternate way of getting them."

    /this.

Unless they're selectively asking a certain smiley abuser and using that as their sole feedback. As it is, once it hits beta, unless there's a massive gamebreaker (like the Kheldian form powers / Domination not working a couple betas ago) it goes live pretty much as it is... regardless of what's said. Perhaps a little tweak here and there.

Beta's pretty much just a mid-level stress test for the issue before live, plus a bit of marketing.

YOu don't see sonic blast because people don't want to *hear* Sonic Blast. It's such a mishmash of effects. (And it's even weirder coming from a female character.) "Braaagh! AAaaagh! Awoooooooooo!" .... wha?

They really need to make an alternate sound set for that.

but in general it is very cheap to run an MMO if you put minimal dev work into running it. So turning one off that has even a few thousand paying customers probably doesn't make much sense.

"Someone else's stories who're no longer with the company".

Any writer of an ongoing serial that says the above should consider another profession. The old plot points are not "someone else's stories". The new plot points are not "your stories". The CoH game lore is bigger than any one writer and should be treated with respect accordingly...rather than as a platform to introduce some completely random concepts that have little to do with the existing lore. This isn't fanfiction; the contributions of all writers should feed into the general narrative, rather than from it.
There are a lot of times I dont' agree with Xanatos, but he's really hitting the nail on the head in this thread... all the nails, frankly.

Just had to quote this bit because it's something that irritates the hell out of me with the way the current team is going, even MORE than sticking Praetorians and the Well in everything.

I really think some of you need to be exposed to sets of story arcs like this to see how good they can be. (Assuming the dev team does them decently, of course.)

But the remnants of the old team did alot more than just keep the game up and running. Invention system. Mission architect. Power Customization. Praetoria. Morality tips. Incarnate content. Against all odds, they actually made the game better. Always in the shadow of what their predecessors did.

For the Freem 15, I imagine it must mean the world to finally claim City of Heroes as their own, to stop feeling like the crew of a low-budget sequel. It's their baby now, i7 to i22 and still going strong, no one can claim otherwise. I say cut them a little slack even if it is borderline bragging. So the devs couldn't wait to tell everybody they were finally bringing down the portrait of their old boss. Does it matter? They deserve it.
The flip side of that is the whole "We don't want to continue any old ideas, we just want new new new!" that personally I find really, REALLY irritating as an attitude. Blood fo the Black Stream? Nope, screw it, even if what we know sounds interesting. Other epics? Nope. How about just adding content to DA? Nope, have to nuke it and put something else vastly different in (and limit access.)

And "Finally claim City of Heroes as their own?" How many of them were there well before becoming Paragon Studios? It already IS their own, so that argument really isn't one. They've hardly been "in the shadow of their predecessors." Jack lost interest, what, after issue 5-6? He had his "super secret project" (which has yet to see the light of day in anything but some many-years-old concept art) and then the Marvel MMO which siphoned people from COH and eventually became CO.

I don't think they've "felt like the crew of a low budget sequel" since NC bought them, hired most of the team and gave them their own offices and a fresh cash infusion.
  20. About the only thing the OP has right is that PVP is broken and needs fixing. Pre-I13, Ice Blast was *very* popular as a primary, usually paired with Energy or Electric. If PVP is ever fixed (like that will happen,) THEN we can start looking at PVP adjustments for sets.

Until then, you're complaining that your car's cupholder is broken while you're stuck in a sinkhole, the axles have snapped and the frame is bent - there are MUCH bigger problems to deal with (namely PVP itself.)

Tech? Straight up guy in a tech suit...or a sentient robot, an alchemist from another dimension who uses magi-tech. Science can come from a million and one sources, not all human. Magic is an even broader group, as is mutant.

The long and short of it is, the time spent doing story work is better spent on content EVERYONE can enjoy all the time, rather than 'Origin Only' arcs that will never mesh well with all concepts, and probably not even the majority. There is a reason Origins have been left well enough alone for a long ol' time now.
Somehow I don't think you actually thought about this and decided to just recycle a response. How would an origin related story chain, as described, interfere with anyone's origin story or background?

For instance, with your own objections:
    Quote:
Tech? Straight up guy in a tech suit...or a sentient robot, an alchemist from another dimension who uses magi-tech
Do you think Crey, on seeing some new tech, would *not* be interested in getting their hands on it and trying to reverse engineer it, regardless of where it came from? It's the OUTSIDE GROUP'S interest after seeing the character.

    Quote:
Science can come from a million and one sources, not all human.
And this would prevent an OUTSIDE GROUP from being interested in it why, or interfere with someone's backstory how?

    Quote:
Magic is an even broader group,
COT, BP (or, hey, there's actually a group that would like to eradicate magic because they did so on their home world - the Rikti. Hmmmm... look at that, in a way the suggestion is partially in place already.)

    Quote:
    as is mutant.
So, say, the Devouring Earth (and yes I know they're more level limited) wouldn't be interested in finding out about what caused a mutation in order to advance their own interests?

Does it affect *anyone's* backstory that, for instance, the Malta Group is just working against (or trying to capture/subverty) any "metahuman?" No. Is anyone's backstory affected by having MAGI, GIFT, DATA, etc around? Nope - and they've been there since day 1. The OP's suggestion wouldn't affect anyone that way either.

The OP's suggesting story content. Not making (say) Mutant have a higher resist cap or something. And if you're really adamant that nobody would have any outside interest in your character, you could ignore the arcs.

Why would the GMs know better? They don't just service this game, and they certainly don't keep up with the individual comments of each game's devs/community service reps.

    Cutscenes

    Yeah, cutscenes. My suggestion?

    Get rid of 'em.

Yes, I know they advance a story, etc, etc, etc. But:
    - You can't skip them. Supposedly if you've played it before (trial/tf) it will skip if everyone has. But the game's not aware of alts, so when my new Mr. Blastalot hits one... I can't just skip it.

    - They look bad. Just flat out - no matter how many shinies they put in, they just look *poor.* Why? Because we have fixed-expression bobbleheads having balloons appear as they bob and stiffly emote. Newer games have characters look like they're actually *talking* and emoting properly.

    - They get people cutting in with text, thinking it's humorous.

In their place, I say adopt the comic-book medium and give us "comic pages." Yes, more work for the art team (though apparently the cutscenes are *also* a lot of work) but it matches the genre, it would allow appropriate expression (instead of "creepy fixed bobblehead") and, yes, help offset that this is an eight (plus) year old game to people coming in.
