My dear, evil is a point of view. To the Loyalists, the supposed heroes of Paragon City are evil. They come from a world constantly teetering on the brink of destruction, see themselves fit to judge another world (such arrogance), and then decide to overthrow the government just because they don't like it.

So who, exactly, is evil again?

Bingo. Two of my SG mates made the mistake of trying to do a Numina the other day. . . .

Let's just say they got a teensy bit frustrated at the lack of regular mobs on the streets. After all I can't repeat what they really said in Vent without getting my forum account at least temporarily banned.

Then the criticism counts. If you want this badge, you have to go through this very ordinary mission set and then have the possibility of Anti-Matter teleport away (although I thought that only happened in the first half of the arc and you can defeat him correctly towards the end of it).

It's like saying "The Positron TF sucks and everyone knows it sucks but we give it a pass because its old content" despite it being a core requirement in earning two badges.

Rather then everyone acting in a knee jerk defence, read the complaint and suggest another way of taking on Anti-Matter for the badge.
As has already been pointed out, if the OP had used just a bit less venom in their post they might have gotten a more positive response from the community. But ranting like a lunatic doesn't really accomplish much. I for one agree that some of the older arcs are in desperate need of a revamp. But I do not agree with delivering that sentiment in a rather inflammatory fashion.

I think it's just 'cause you're evil Switch. (Sorry, just couldn't resist.)

On a more serious note, I do have a theory about this. I'm sure we've all had those times when the game just decides that our attacks are going to miss. A lot. It's like the random number generator gets stuck in a range for a moment. Hence the reason we have the Streak Breaker code.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about: a while back playing my Mind/Fire Dom I distinctly recall a mission fighting Longbow. I hit Mass Hypnosis on a spawn of 6 mobs and saw the word "Missed" 6 times. I checked my combat log and every single attack had a 95% chance to hit and the game rolled between 96 and 100 6 times straight.

I think that very same phenomenon is what contributes to the weird drop rates some people see. The game just gets stuck in a range and funnels all the drops to Team Member B. I've run with teams on which practically no one but myself got anything and my recipe inventory filled up almost every other mission.

Anyway, just my 2 influence. I think it's a quirk of our random number generator. I wonder, does the Streak Breaker apply to recipe rolls? If not, maybe it should.
  9. Is it really that big of a deal? I mean, honestly.
As for P_P's "player question" on the general discussion board, am I to assume that any sentence ending with a question mark doesn't belong here?

    Understood completely.
My bit of amazing luck last night was after a 3 month drought of my own.

That being said, I have grouped with Quantum_Particle several times over the last few weeks and I can personally attest to his entire account being very buggy. I've seen some pretty bizarre things go down with his characters that affected no one else on the team, so I feel for the guy.
  11. Doctor Xaxan, here's my take on the situations you describe:

    1) I've never encountered someone horribly misusing caltrops. Oddly enough, I can't even recall ever tanking on a team with someone that had the power. So on this I can't comment.

    2) My usual solution is to in fact hang back just long enough for the fire/kin to actually eat the alpha. One of two things will happen: they will faceplant and I'll pick the spawn back up, or they won't and I'll just pick the spawn up anyway. Of course if they absolutely refuse to learn, I'll one star them and never team with them again. Problem solved.

    3) Superscout Scrappers: I let them die or not, as their own ability dictates. I will grab the aggro after they're gone, same as with the fire/kin. If they don't die, the team is just moving a little faster.

    4) Big Ego tanks: If the other tank really really really super duper really wants to take point, I let 'em. But I keep an eye out for any issues and take up the slack if I have to. If they annoy me enough, they get the 1 star treatment as well.

I have to agree with the others that I probably wouldn't bail on a TF. I've been on some absolutely horrific ones that, amazingly enough, got all better once one or two "key" people left. On a regular mission team though, I will definitely find something else to go do pretty quickly.

    First Server

I started on Liberty to play with some RL friends that played at the time. Even though those specific people have long since left for other games, I remain on Liberty as I've made other friends and the place just feels like home now.

That's the bizarre thing about a random drop system like ours: some people just seem to never get lucky, while others seem to get lucky all the time.

Granted we couldn't buy slots when CoV first came out but people pretty much said the same thing when it was looming on the horizon. And we got some additional slots when it launched.

So I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the Devs say.
  15. I'll join you Marcian.
The chaos that is Paragon City absolutely cannot be allowed to infest Praetoria!
  16. Ah, Freedom. Such a lovely term. You're jealous of our counterparts in Paragon City, aren't you little one? You wish you had their freedoms.
Shall we examine the freedoms you so covet? The people of Paragon city enjoy the freedom to be:
    • Shot
    • Stabbed
    • Kidnapped
    • Experimented Upon
    • Mutated
    • Sacrificed to ancient gods (my personal favorite)
Such lovely freedoms indeed. Emperor Cole offers stability young one. You and your kind would force us all into chaos. I shall be more than happy to present you to the Emperor myself. Then he will know who his true loyal subjects are. And we shall be amply rewarded.

OOC: Oh my, this is going to be fun.

    I see.
So the fact that I have had to turn down people asking to join my mission team every night for the past three nights due to my team being full means a dead server right? And the fact that I can pretty much get a TF if I sneeze sideways also means a dead server I suppose?

Here's a funny, but related and true story: The other day I was doing an ITF. After Romulus died the last time and we took to the towers to finish off the Cimeroran Traitors I looked at one of my global channels to see the following (names changed of course, and paraphrased a little).

    Randomguy: Anything going on?
Randomguy: This server is so DEAD. OMG this game is dying!

This was followed by several people in the channel basically asking him "lol what?". Because we didn't ALL drop what we were doing and instantly respond with "Randomguy! OMG JOIN MAH TEAMZ!" Our server is dead. Yeaaaah......sure. Never once did it occur to this little fellow that maybe people didn't instantly respond because they were busy doing things.

Oh and by the way, I play on Liberty, not Freedom. One of the servers I have seen people describe as dead. Let me assure you, it is very much alive.

    The road to 50

Pre-30 I prefer a mix of solo play and teaming through normal contact missions and TF's. Even though the xp is very fast, I don't really care for 8 man teams. My ideal team size is about 2-4 people. On my last two characters I've run on large teams in the lower levels and managed to completely miss Faultline, which annoys me as I love the story arcs there. Yes I know I could turn off xp, but that defeats the purpose of playing a lowbie IMHO.

After 30, I have found that I can barely stand most of the hero side story arcs. Too much running around, too many street hunts, and the mission objectives of the door missions are sometimes painfully annoying. I often run radio missions and TF's in this range, or help friends with arcs they want to do on their characters.

I don't generally powerlevel through any of it, though to be honest I've thought about it. Certain AT's and powerset combos are downright bloody awful pre-SO's and pre-Stamina. Until SSK I flat refused to exemp my Ice tank below 26, for example. It's a miracle the character made it to 20, much less 50 because his Endurance issues before EA were just that bad. So for that reason I still think that while the recent xp changes have helped the lower levels, the Devs still have yet to address the core problem: the performance of sub-20 characters is far too low compared to what they turn into later on. Buff lowbies I say!

This concept seems to trip up a lot of new players to CoH, doesn't it?
DocDominion, to make a long story short, CoH is very different from other MMO's in that a pure healer isn't really necessary. (i.e., you don't really need one person standing in the back spamming heals all day long to keep everyone alive). That being said, healing does have its place and can be a very useful thing to have around. But making healing the single focus of your character is going to in the long term prove very boring for you.

For example, my first (and so far only) level 50 hero is a Tank. He is softcapped for defense, which means that he rarely takes damage from anything short of an AV beating on him. He can literally charge into a very large spawn of mobs and sometimes take no damage at all from their initial strike. A purely healing-focused character on a team with him would get very, very bored.

In CoH, the role of "healer" most often takes the form of buffs for your teammates, debuffs on the mobs and (in the case of Controllers) CC'ing mobs so they can't do anything at all. Healing does play a part in that, but it to be honest it is not the most important part.

I know all the above might sound very strange to someone coming to CoH from an MMO with a more traditional setup for team support, but trust me, it's true. If you focus only on healing you are cheating yourself out of what could have been a much more entertaining experience.
  21. My only scrapper so far would have been Dark/Willpower instead of Dark/Regen. I've thought about remaking him a few times, but just haven't brought myself to do it. He's a very old character, and as such has several anniversary badges.

Eclipse can be made perma very easily so once you have it set up so its perma you will be running around like a Tank minus taunt.

If you have the money you might want to sell your SOs and switch to level 30, 35 or 40 common IOs which can take you all the way to 50 and beyond. Once you save up some inf then you can invest in the proper sets to finalize your build the way you want it and see increased effectiveness.
Thanks for the advice. I hit 38 last night and built out both my Tri-Form and Human Form builds with level 40 IO's. I usually wait until around then as the 40 IO's are roughly +3 SO's in strength.

And you're right about Eclipse. As soon as I got it I jumped into a spawn of Fifth Column to try it out. Hitting the resistance cap was very very nice.

I've only managed two 50's over the years, and I stopped playing both of them almost as soon as they hit 50. I can easily see me not doing this with my Warshade. He's the only character I've played thus far that I'm truly interested in maxing out with sets. It's going to take a while to do so for both builds, but hey, Paragon City isn't going anywhere.
  23. <scratches head>
    <reads the thread again>

Ok......no offense at all intended to anyone, but I really don't understand how you can possibly have the impression of Kheldians sucking because my own experience directly contradicts it. I'm currently leveling my first Kheldian, a Warshade. He hit 38 about 30 minutes ago. I have found him to be pretty squishy outside of Dwarf, yes, but it doesn't even begin to approach the levels of "fail" so many have described in this thread. To be honest my first Dominator at CoV launch felt FAR weaker than my Warshade.

His damage output is good (in Nova with Sunless Mire going it's downright crazy at times), he has no downtime whatsoever, he has a powerful heal that is up pretty much as often as I want it, I can cap his resistances with the push of a button, he can pop into Dwarf for extra survivability if a pull goes badly. I'm just not seeing the "fail" here.

Granted, when I am soloing him I do have to use strategy and not just charge in like a bull in a china shop. Is that what puts people off? That Kheldians do take some strategy to not faceplant? I mean no disrespect to anyone with that statement, I'm just trying to understand the meter by which everyone is judging them.

My two problems with branching were these: First, I missed the Assault Rifle style of play from levels 1-23. Second I felt like I was playing a completely different character from 24-30. I felt like I had lost something. The discontinuity between what it had been from what it became was much too drastic.

Your suggested method of branching would have been much better for me. I wouldn't have lost my early abilities, and I would have felt I was playing the same character.
Afterimage, my experience was almost the complete opposite of yours. When I made my first VEAT, all I wanted was to play a Crab Spider. I did NOT want to be an AR corruptor. I agree that once you branch a VEAT feels like a totally different character. However, unlike you, I detested the first 23 levels and got them over with as soon as possible.

Same experience on my Fortunata. I didn't want to be a Claws scrapper/stalker, yet there I was, stuck with a totally different playstyle for the first 23 levels of the character's life.

I agree with Memphis Bill. The branching mechanic needs to come earlier. MUCH earlier.
  25. If I'm not mistaken, the actual bug is not the mission itself, but rather Sister Airlia. She's not supposed to offer you that arc until you are level 40, but goes ahead and does so anyway at 35. The rest of the mobs in the missions scale, but the ambushes don't. Seems like I remember reading that somewhere.

As for the Ballista's, yeah, they are a bit too much IMHO. Their defenses and damage are way out of line for them to ever spawn on solo missions.
