I almost bought this poster at Emerald City Comic Con... until my wife pointed out that I had nowhere to display it.

Quote:But you can summon Cenobites with it!The look of the Tech shield ia awesome, they hit that sucker outta the park. So, why does the Tech War Mace look like glowing rebar put together by a drunk welder?
...yeah, it's pretty awful. Some kind of glowing stun-prod would be nice for the tech warmace. -

For real fun -
Consider the fact that each spines power is individually customizable. -

Quote:Ice is... okay. It's great at holding aggro, it has a damage aura, it debuffs enemy damage, it can refill its own endurance bar. Its mitigation is almost entirely defense-based, but it does not have high levels of defense debuff resistance - it sits on about 52% DDR on my ice/km/soul tank. I use EA to take me over the softcap to give myself a debuff cushion. It is really nice to be completely immune to slows, though. Running at full speed off a multiple KoA caltrop spawn is nice.I generally play scrappers or blasters, I have a few controllers, but generally I shirk any role of responsibility to the team. But now I'd like ice armor.
I'm not seeing any ice/dark out there and it seems to be amazing. Great S/L/E/N defense and every dark attack does at least -5% ToHit on the enemy.
(if you don't know what ToHit is, it's like boosting the defense of anyone that enemy is attacking. So, an AoE had that effect for not just you, but anyone being attacked by any enemy in your aura.)
2x damage/taunt toggle auras, and Energy Absorption. And while Touch o' Fear was initially looking like crap to me, the 22 second -10% ToHit rocks very, very hard.
It looks too good to be true, so I assume it has to be. There'd be no end issues with the two recovery powers, two heal powers, slow resist.
So, what's to hate?
[I'm not prepared to put up a build right now, but the only powers I'd skip would be Hibernate and Shadow Maul, take Fire Epic to get Char, FBreath and Fball, and only take Fighting to Weave, Maneuvers and Tactics.]
With vulnerabilities to both fire and psi, as well as to-hit buffs, I find that hibernate is a really good option to have. Think of it as an in-combat rest; it's fast enough that you probably won't lose much aggro between going into hibernate and leaving it.
Dark Melee makes any tank more durable, and it should work very well for Ice Armor. The ability to shut down bosses with Touch of Fear is also quite nice.
I'd say go for it. Just make sure you have Hibernate - you'll want it. -
Quote:Because it's so hard to communicate with your team or to set up a bind saying "Unstoppable crash in 10 seconds." Take five seconds to recover after the crash and get back to it. Most teams can manage without a tank for a few seconds.I know you are not pulling my leg here. Still, it brings up the question. Where in a Lambda or a BAF will it be prudent to use Unstoppable? And how would you deal with the crash, 3 minutes later, in a situation you cannot predict where the team will be in advance? Or for that matter a LRSF? In short, how exactly will others work out the crash and make this an effective tool for new/high end content?
I do understand other sets/archetypes may be right to say get in line, and may be right in doing so, but Invulnerability has carried this particular problem for many years. -
The guys at MPS, when I saw them give a presentation back a couple of years ago, pointed out that a walker would be the vehicle of choice for rescue work in flooded areas. You know, like Katrina or a tsunami.

Anecdata time:
I've had two purple recipes - a Fortunata Hypnosis and a Soulbound Allegiance - drop on me in iTrials. I also had a respec recipe drop on me.
It seems a bit off to me, particularly considering the paucity of other drops. -
Yeah...
Every time I see one of these, I think of these guys, who are actually working on doing it.
Their major funding is from their CEO (I believe) who is independently wealthy from his stint in the technology sector during the dot com boom. -
Quote:If you get two rings, go play with the adds for a bit. Staying and tanking and getting all of your teammates irresistibly held by the sequestering effect doesn't help anybody.Other than being sequestered so often (there should be a badge for that) I found the new trials relatively fun. I think the drop rate of shards/threads should be increased on Lambda. Otherwise like most trials players will just shotgun through them to get to the end.
Chances are there will be another melee who can hold some attention on themselves.
Thee new trials are great, but there are circumstances where you shouldn't just stand and tank them. Marauder's Nova Fist and the sequestration effect will take a tank out of the fight. Fortunately, you're given ample warning to mitigate those effects.
I once managed to get myself killed by Nightstar trying to pull her to the tennis courts - that was my fault for not paying enough attention. (And failing to drop a purple first.) Otherwise, all the new content needs is a new set of tactics and some decent situational awareness.
For the record, I'm playing a softcapped inv/fire in these trials. -
Quote:I love the smell of anti-intellectualism in the morning.No. Holding a doctorate merely means you've invested lots of time and money into obtaining a piece of paper that says you know something. Ostensibly, this means you're "educated". But it's always possible that the reality of the situation will generate massive cognitive dissonance.

Quote:It was changed...Dominator's Embrace of Fire doesn't seem to have been changed. Think that was an oversight? or a deliberate thing.
Its name went from Fiery Embrace to Embrace of Fire.
That was the only change - it kept its old functionality. That was a deliberate decision on Castle's part. -
It goes something like this:
I have attack X. Attack X with nothing slotted in it does 100 points of lethal damage.
When I hit Fiery Embrace, Attack X now does 100 points of lethal damage and 40 points of fire damage. Cool, huh?
But it gets better. The fire damage from Fiery Embrace is affected by enhancements and damage buffs. So, if I hit Build Up, then Fiery Embrace, then Attack X (unslotted), I'll be doing 200 points of lethal damage and 80 points of fire damage.
Then I team up with a kinetics defender who hits a Fulcrum Shift in a big mob, pushing my damage buff to the scrapper cap. I hit Fiery Embrace and Attack X, and Attack X does 500 points of lethal damage and 200 points of fire damage.
Even if I just slot my Attack X to the 95% ED limit, I'll do 195 lethal damage and 78 points of fire damage.
That bonus fire damage applies to all your powers that do damage, including things like Blazing Aura and Burn, and anything from your ancillary/patron pools. Blazing Aura goes from doing 10 points of fire damage to 14, for instance.
The newly buffed Fiery Embrace is awesome. -
Perhaps that's the mysterious future use for Astral Merits.

The one side gives you a Victoria and an ACU, which is the one you did want...

Quote:If your daughter is that keen on tanking, get your Mids' Hero Designer and let her have a crack at it. I bet she'd surprise you with how well she can build one, and it's great for mathematics/problem solving/learning about opportunity costs.Do you use Mids Hero Builder? It allows you to plan out a build and even export it to the forums. If you have it and use it, take a crack at a build, post it, and the community can help from there. If not, or you don't want to get it, try listing any/all powers you definitely want to have and someone might throw something together.
Just make sure she knows that 45% defense will make her tank super-tough and let her go with it. -
I would think that Cryonic could be explained away as "throwing a bazillion knives/shuriken."

I tried one BAF run, and one Lambda run. Both were joined via the LFG system.
The BAF run failed, I think - both my wife and I managed to crash out during the third phase, and by the time we got back, it was all over. The team was doing well - it might have failed because everyone crashed at the same time.
The Lambda run I joined was also unsuccessful. It moved like clockwork until the last phase, when several people got confused about temporary powers, and Marauder just had too many spawns with him by the time we got all the gates down.
Learning curve - it'll get easier as more people learn the tricks of the trials. -
Quote:Gone With The Wind is purest fantasy... but not in the way you mean, and a quick perusal looks as though you're right.I think I found a guy, though: Clark Gable. No sci-fi or Fantasy that I can tell.
Gary Cooper's also light on the fantasy/sci-fi... he does have one credit that fits the bill much as GWTW does... The Fountainhead is pure fantasy as well. -
Quote:That's rather missing the point, in my opinion.I ran vs. the greatest spread of baddies that I could across all difficulty settings. So yes I also faced them. When I play with my little experiments I try and get the best cross section as possible.
Of course having 60% defense won't help you against 95% of the game. Things still have only a 5% base to-hit chance against you.
The idea would not be to compare against the entire game - it would be an apples to apples comparison against enemies that have a 64% to-hit chance.
Your icer would have roughly quadruple the survivability against enemies with a base 64% to hit if you built to 59% defense vs. the usual 45%. That should be a noticeable difference.
I don't think that using a new soft cap tank on most content is a worthwhile endeavor - it's a precision tool that's highly over-engineered for the task. It's like using a laser-guided computer-driven industrial drill press when all you need to do is drill a pilot hole for a screw. Yes, it will work, but it'll take three times as long to do as using a regular power drill, and you won't have noticeably better results.
It's about using the right tool for the job - which is why I'm considering using one of my three builds as an 'Incarnate Tank' build. You don't use it across a wide variety of content, you use it for Incarnate content. -
Quote:But were you running against Praetorian Clockwork/DE?I actually ran max defense on my ice/, I was over 60% s/l/e/n and had the toggle from red side soul... although watching it work with chilling 'e was neat because of the -dam but the additional -acc was not noticeable, it was seriously disappointing. I run about every possible combination for tanking on my ice/ just because I like in game testing vs. computer spreads etc. Max defense had to be the biggest let down of all builds for me. Clicking EA added even more defence but again I noticed no real benefit over 45% no matter the content.
For me this was a much better mids experiment than was in game. -
Quote:We have three builds at our disposal... there is no reason not to consider building for the Praetorian content. I'm not investing in that until I see how often I'll be running the content, but the way the league system works, there's a good chance that a pick-up trial *won't* have the defense buffs you consider necessary. There's also something to be said for being a self-sufficient tanker running those trials.I think most people would agree that it is a waste of slots and power selections to aim for that much defense. The majority of the game only requires 45% defense to give your enemies the lowest chance to hit possible. Other than DE tip missions, content with higher base to-hit is designed for team-play only. In a team, you will most likely have someone to cover the gap in defense from 45% to 59%. A good team leader would likely build their team in a way that ensures everyone has the best chance to survive by including the right defense buffs.
Those levels of defense are not limited to stone tanks. I've made some Mids builds that I'm still experimenting with, but I've got a Shields/SS build that's got 59% defense to all positions, and an Inv/Fire and Ice/KM that hit 59% to S/L/E/N. I'm not going to post them here yet, because they're still in progress and a bit ugly at the moment - build skeletons as opposed to builds.
Those builds make sacrifices - pushing defenses that high does have significant opportunity costs that I'm generally unwilling to pay.
But, I don't think that a build that softcaps for the new content is uncalled for if you have intentions of running the new content regularly.
As to your contention that JakHammer's stone tank can't move in combat - if you don't see the big glaring power called Teleport that serves just fine for stone tank mobility, that's an oversight on your part, not JakHammer's.
