AT-AT Walker for America

I was worried for a second that the DoD got some insanely stupid notion, but since it's just fans on a lark, that's just fine.

Military applications, I like where you're going with that.

Hmm. I have a strong feeling that this may not really be physically possible in full scale. With a smattering of engineering experience and a degree in Applied Mathematics, I know enough to be dangerous. (Note that the guy 'attempting' this has "no technical expertise," in his own words. So he'll be like a project manager? I suspect this is more of a publicity stunt than any realistic kind of project.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big SW fan, and I'd love to see this work, but I wish an engineer would have come up with it rather than someone who basically has NO knowledge of complex multi-stage mega-engineering projects like this one.

Of the top, it may be that the energy required to move such a behemoth vehicle may outstrip its ability to carry the weight of an engine that can power said vehicle, for starters. Also, the legs are shockingly thin on these critters, so it may not even be able to support the weight on 3 legs at a time (which is the minimum if you think about how it moves).

The saving grace is that you're only moving one leg at a time, so moving said leg does not seem SOO difficult... you may need to shift the center of gravity a few feet around on each leg motion. If not, the vehicle might be inherently unstable, I think, and that might be a recipe for catastrophic failure...

Not so sure it's a good idea to send money to this 'cause' (ie, 'guy'). Other causes might put it to better use. I hear Charlie Sheen is having some troubs lately...

OK, I shouldn't be so negative about the possibility that this could be engineered - we've already seen amazing things.

I will say that on a volunteer, donation-based funding basis, with an inexperienced project manager, I'm pretty sure this would be a buncha money tossed down the drain, possibly used to enrich some random entity. With millions of dollars and NASA-level scientists behind it, I have no doubt it could be done.

A few example issues that would need a dedicated team of people: tolerances, materials, manufacturing equipment, design stress failure, general engineering design, cashflow...

I would agree that power for the system might be an issue, but I don't think materials would be a serious concern. You can make some pretty amazingly strong materials these days. I wouldn't worry about that.

Honestly I suspect the thing might be doable at some scale (full scale, maybe not since that is a fairly large behemoth). But as I said, I'm glad it's just for kicks. Walking military vehicles are an insanely stupid idea (especially one with a configuration like that).

The blueprints don't indicate the easy-access Jedi/hand grenade port in the "belly" of the AT-AT.

Yeah...

Every time I see one of these, I think of these guys, who are actually working on doing it.

Their major funding is from their CEO (I believe) who is independently wealthy from his stint in the technology sector during the dot com boom.

Presumably it's located under the same bathroom where the pilots go to read the latest issue of Naboobies.

This needs to happen. Then it needs to face off against the life-sized Gundam they erected in Japan a while back!!

Of course it's inherently unstable! Didn't you watch the second movie?

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Erm, I take it all back. I for one welcome our new independently stinkin' wealthy, well armed, mobile and heavily armored Overlords.

Also, I'm going to start investing heavily in solid steel ball bearings about 9" in diameter. Get me... i dunno, a billion of them.

the whole concept is pointless. The moment it nears reality Lucasfilms will file a lawsuit. In fact they may wait until building actually starts so that they can also sue for the blueprints and then build one of their own.

Someone has already developed an all-terrain robot designed to carry about 340 pounds of equipment. It can adapt and cross ice, rocks, walk through forests, etc. and reach a supply point via GPS. This means the light infantry wouldn't need to be overloaded with their own equipment and actually would be able to perform as light infantry.

If I can find the video out on the internet I'll post it, but my first thought was "AT-AT Walker."

Is this a walker or tracked/wheeled? Generally, the slight mobility advantage of legs is overcome by advantages of the other options.

While building a functional replica of an AT-AT is cool, I have a hard time picturing those 4 skinny legs as being able to support the behemoth and provide decent mobility, plus the possible fuel requirements could be prohibitive as well.

Also let's not forget the classic line "use your harpoons and tow cables, go for their legs!"

The guys at MPS, when I saw them give a presentation back a couple of years ago, pointed out that a walker would be the vehicle of choice for rescue work in flooded areas. You know, like Katrina or a tsunami.

That's very impressive. Also a bit frightening in the deep depths of my subconscious fearplace. Maybe a water-balloon gun would also be a good investment...
