This is the first time I've re-opened this forum since the first few days after it was created, to be honest.

Quote:Hard to proceed when you lose the Tanker?First one, we lost 1/4 of the league going in. If the trials limited to 24 people SAY SO. If it's supposed to be 36 people let 36 in! Anyhoo, we were kinda in disarray, so we weren't successful.
I intended to be there last night, but something came up. -

Sometime you'll see small shields attached near the forearm or elbow so they can be worn while wielding a weapon two-handed.
These are much less useful than either the old-style center-grip "punch blocking" bucklers (which require a free hand) or the classical "Argive grip" Hoplite-style shield (which requires a free arm and hand). I guess they're more useful than nothing, but only by a little, and the idea of making a shield charge with such a trinket is ludicrous.
Aside from huge, cumbersome pavise-type shields you can hide behind (which also preclude using a two-handed weapon), most shields derive their usefulness from being mobile. The user is able to move the shield at will during combat to block. This, of necessity, involves using an arm independently of the weapon arm.
Bucklers are traditionally held in the fist and used to meet a blow before it has gathered momentum (the aforementioned "punch-blocking" style.) You can strap one onto your arm and ignore it, but it will provide insignificant benefits compared to a mobile shield. -
What huge two-handed weapons are useable with a shield? A real shield, not a small disk tied to your arm?

Quote:P-38 Lightning is probably my all-time favorite for looks and maybe for effectiveness if used right. Watch the Dogfights episode with Robin Olds, for example.p38-lightnings are so much cooler looking than a spitfire
But despite the coolness factor, I think the Spit was "prettier" in an aesthetic sense.
Bonus fact: When I was very young, P-38s occasionally flew overhead when we lived near Hanscom Field in Massachusetts. -
Quote:Note that this is true of many powersets. My Tankers get "maximized" benefits if they use their Bruising attack, hit Build UP, and then hit their heavy hitters. My debuffers get "maximized" benefits only if they lead with their debuffs. Controllers need to use Containment to "maximize" benefits, and mezz to stay alive. Not to mention Blasters -- between Aim, Build-Up, heavy hitters, nuke, and some mezzing/controlling powers to stay alive, all complicated by a constantly shifting Defiance bonus, I'm never quite sure if I've "maximized" my benefits in any given fight.I still find them both annoying because, ultimately, you must press X followed by Y to get "maximized" benefits.
But it's fun to blast away! -
Come to Tanker Tuesdays. All-Tanker teams, and I'm usually the wiseacre suggesting we recruit more Tanks.

Or clipper ships. Or perhaps the Supermarine Spitfire.

Quote:Text box:Right. The current application is a bit of a 'fake,' it's just a draw distance application (not particle FX). That said, full zone particle FX would be prohibitively expensive, so we'll generate the appropriate atmosphere in other ways.
Quote:It is foggy. Exits are W, S. You hear a Grue. Quote:As long as @TheCheshireCat's DA arcs still exist in the MA...then nothing the devs make with their revamp will get to the heart of what it means to be Dark Astoria. Want to see good writing? Check out "Astoria in D Minor"
There's no geek "humour". (hoorb)
There's no spikey shiney armour.
There's no gimmick fights.
There's no uber-lame NPCs stealing the spotlight.
There's no writing telling you how your character is thinking/acting/speaking.
There's just an awesome engaging story that utilizes what we already have to it's maximum potential. If the devs are looking for a direction to take DARK Astoria than this is it. It's just horror. It's amazing. -
Quote:I dropped a couple of partly-slotted O2 Boosts on you when I saw your health dip at all. That made me feel productive, but I'm under no illusions that someone with Dark Regeneration actually needed to be topped off.I was a bit concerned about the lack of defense-boosting buffers at first, but there was no need. Between the Storm and Time debuffs, plenty of soft control from Freezing Rain/Earthquake and blaster KB, and the hard Earth controls, there wasn't much hitting me anyway.

Well, that's not strictly true. In games, choice within a structured environment is good. Let's take a game vastly more successful than COH: Chess. You can choose to move any of your 8 pawns on the first move, or you can jump out one of your knights. But if your pawns could move any distance and direction you chose, the game would quickly break down into the equivalent of a pair of six-year-olds arguing about made-up powers: "I took you King with my Death-Ray Pawn! I win!" "Nuh-UH, my king is Chuck Norris!"
My point is that there is such a thing as too much choice, theoretically. Or at least unstructured choice.
Certainly this case (mandatory secondary pick) seems arbitrary. But the line has to be drawn somewhere, and this is where they drew it. Sure, they could move that line, but the next day someone would ask them to allow him to pick the Tier nine at level 1.
I don't really get that. You're saying the players playing one way (farming) and the players playing another way (non-farming) are both forced to play the same way? How is that possible? -
Quote:Well, it could be argued that giving such an AT damage close to Blaster & Scrapper levels would invalidate Blasters and Scrappers. So you move the damage down so as not to tread on their toes. Way down, of course, because it has to be significant difference.Rangle - Eldagore mentions Tankmages in his original post. He points out that he's not asking for something overpowered, but balanced, so as not to tread on Blaster's or Scrapper's, or anyone else's toes.
But the OP doesn't want it to be as low as Defender damage, because we already have those. So we move it back up a bit.
And he's less interested in team use of this proposed AT -- it's mostly solo damage he's looking for.
Well, Defenders already get a 30% damage bonus solo.
It would be possible to alter the damage to a finer balance point, I suppose, but is it really necessary to make a new AT for that?
edit: I see the OP has considered this line of thought and rejected it, for reasons I don't really understand. -

That would introduce a "suspension of disbelief" problem. I'll believe that you can fly, shoot radiation beams from your hands, or turn into a stone monstrosity; but I can't believe a cat will follow you around loyally.

I'm having a weird graphical issue on an older computer after the 11/10 patch.
I have an ATI Radeon 9800 graphics card. I'm running in Windows XP.
I see that per this thread, I am supposed to use the older 9.3 drivers for best results -- which I am, according to my ATI Catalyst Control Center.
It's worked fine for me for a long time, but since the patch, I am warned that I probably need to update my older drivers. But when I log in, my "window scale" setting in \options has reverted to the default (100% scale) from my usual 80%. Also, my windows have moved around from where I usually anchor them.
It's little trouble to re-set my scale to 80% and drag my windows back around to the way I like them, and save the results. But each time I log out of the game entirely, it re-sets the window scale to default and shuffles my windows (probably back to some default position, but I am not certain).
How can I fix this?
Can't buy a new card, as I am told I will have to buy a whole new system to support it.
Suggestions?
Thanks for your time! -
I guess "lower pop server" is relative. Yeah, Justice's population is lower than Virtue or Freedom, but it's almost always in the top five, sometimes even #3, more often #4.

Quote:Well, the advantage of the short form is that it pushes the author toward a conclusion, unlike an infinite blank slate. A short bio at least concludes, instead of rambling on. You'll probably find more people willing to appreciate a short bio that has a definite arc (beginning-middle-end) than you will find people who want to read the Unabomber-Manifesto-like outpourings of everyone they team with.If you don't like reading long bios, or won't read a bio that scrolls. Then don't.
That said, I'm not against creativity...
This seems like a much better approach. Good idea! Perhaps the original 1023-character Bio space could even be renamed "Blurb" to emphasize it's the short, snappy version? -
There's an anti-aircraft missile vehicle one sees in the RWZ and other places that looks like an M133 APC chassis with 2 pairs of 4 missile boxes mounted on top. There's a lot of real-life equipment that looks close to that, but I haven't been able to find a match while Googling around this morning.
