You succeeded in building a game that had nearly everything I could want. I don't know if I will ever find a game that does the things CoH did.
1. Look like whatever you want at level one. Seriously, this is huge. Being able to build a seriously cool character and play them for only five levels or whatever, what MMO let you do that before CoH came along? Ideally, I'd like something with even more customization, but having started out with EQ I can tell you what I don't like about "all newbies look like newbies". Everything.
2. Super-Sidekicking was the best thing ever. Seriously, I hope every game in the future does something like it. Being able to play with all of our friends on whatever characters at whatever levels is a godsend.
3. Casual-player friendly, something a lot of MMO's simply aren't. For a couple of years I worked nights, and I played EQ on their Test Server, which had a very low population, and my Shaman had to solo much of the time. And that was a class that was good at soloing, but it still wasn't a game that was friendly to solo players... most MMO's weren't.
4. Making me feel powerful. One player versus three enemies, I think that was Jack's standard, which I far exceeded since many of my characters are heavily IO'd, but even one on three is better than the old standard, which often meant even 1 on 1 was a tough fight in which you might die. (I can sstill vividly remember being in a team of six or eight on the Plane of Disease or somesuch, waiting for an expert monk using feign death to separate one rat from another bunch of rats, because god forbid you get two or three rats, the whole team would wipe. Sure, they were Plane of Disease rats... but we were all above level 50, and we had to gang up on one rat.) But my characters could solo against many enemies... I may never find another MMO that does that.
5. Cool powers. Some of the ones that came out in the last year were among the coolest of all.
There's a lot of other stuff I could add... but it all adds up to a game that did a lot of stuff differently than anyone else, and was incredibly flexible in what it allowed me to play. I really don't think I'll find another game that does all of those things again... or at least, not until some former Paragon Studios designers wind up somewhere else. -
That's a good idea, I think I'm going to do something similar.

I'm thinking of keeping a "Last 90 Days" journal, but I'd have to back it up at some other site as well since I don't know when these forums might go away.
Regardless, I've set myself several immediate goals:
1. Get my staff melee brute to 50.
2. Get my nature affinity/water blast defender to 50.
I have other toons that I'd like to get to 50 as well, but these two are new sets that I want to experience a bit more of.
Beyond that, I'd like to play through Praetoria once -- I never really did make it all the wa through -- and First Ward and Night Ward, I haven't done any of Night Ward before. One of my longer-range goals was to run a Praetorian to 50, but no real sense in wasting 3 months to do that now, I just want to experience the stories at least once.
As for task forces and trials, I've done nearly all of them, most of them I can do in my sleep, but I haven't played a ton of incarnate content so I've never done a Minds of Mayhem or Dilemma Diabolique Trial, and there are some redside strike forces that I've only done once or twice. I also haven't done an Abandoned Sewer Trial in over a year, I'd like to organize at least one more of those.
I still haven't played through every one of the SSAs, that's easy to fix though. And I know there are a bunch of mid-level newer arcs and I've only played through one that I know of.
So... I still have more stuff that I want to do than I probably have time to do. -
Technically this is the first character I ever created, but I deleted her within a few days.
Organica, my first real character. -
Thanks Sean, and good luck wherever you wind up next.

I have 48 characters on Virtue on two different accounts, and also six other accounts. So you can understand if I say that I haven't spent 5,000 hours on one character.
Mouse Police was my main character on my main account for several years after I came back to the game, and my only serious badger. So she's still tops in hours.
Sparks Fly is one of my favorite charactes and the one I PL my other toons with most often.
I've played Tiffany Blackheart a lot too. I *think* she's #3 on the list. -
I'm going in the opposite direction actually. I was IOing a new toon today... one of the last I plan to get to 50... and I was like, "f it, I'm buying everything off the market at whatever price it takes to do so. I can afford it."
So someone's making money off me. -
My projects are:
Get my staff melee/energy brute to 50. Was 29 last night, but I got to 35 today and did some IOing (I tend to slot 30-33 IOs).
Get my nature affinity/water blast defender to 50, currently 30.
Possibly get my staff melee/ninjitsu stalker to 50 as well (currently 30).
Whatever else I can manage to have fun with. I started a new Beast Mastery toon, so will play with that a bit. I had the points to spend. -
Hami raids every Sat until they shut us down, Per Exxx
We had fun at today's raid. There were at least a couple of people who had NEVER done a hami raid before, or even been in The Hive. ^_^ -
I never played Earth & Beyond but my friends did, and from what I remember the servers stayed up for several months after it closed, but got increasingly unstable as time went on. That's sort of what I expect here too.

Thanks for everything, it was an awesome ride!

It's an awesome picture.
Your son is clearly a great kid! I'm just sad he'll never experience trick or treating City of Heroes style.
The last thing I did in game before the news came down... I had gone to bed very early Thursday night and gotten up very early Friday, so I ran five tips on my staff melee brute Princess Ozma. I did the other five this morning to confirm hero status, since it was something I'd started.
I also logged into the forums around 11 AM and had time to grab one of the free costume codes and apply it to one of my accounts, and I was feeling really good about that. I don't go bonkers over the costume codes -- I already have several on each of my two main accounts, and don't feel a need to collect a bunch more -- but I added one to my Dilithium Flower account, and was pretty happy about that, and happy about my plans for the 3 day weekend.
Then I checked the forums again on my afternoon break... :/ -
Well, I was prepared to run this project for as long as it took... at least into next year, I figured, with the idea that the closer my characters got to 50, the more impressive the whole project might seem.
But obviously I'm not going to spend the last 3 months of the game running DfB over and over, just to get these characters into their mid 30's. I've identified 2-3 characters that I'd really like to play to 50 -- my nature affinity/water blast defender Forest Goddess, and my staff melee/energy brute Princess Ozma, and perhaps my staff/ninjitsu stalker Eternal Sweeper as well. I also finally went ahead and bought Beast Mastery since I had the points, and created "Dog Aggro" since I'd had the name reserved for months. I don't expect to play that character to 50 but I can have a little fun with him I guess. And other than that, I just want to try and run the TFs I really like and try anything I haven't already tried in the game before the end.
But for what it's worth, here's my other DfB characters that I had intended to post pics/bios of over the next couple of weeks. I spent time writing up the bios to try and make them entertaining, so at least I can post them:
As for what I learned from running DfB over and over? There's really not that much to learn, but I was surprised at how great people on Virtue were about the Vahz badge. Probably 85% of the runs I was on someone wanted the badge, and 90% of the time we got it. The few times we missed, people didn't speak up quickly enough. I think there was one miss by accident and only once where someone just purposely didn't go along with the request or ignored everyone.
A couple of these freebie accounts are now VIP. I don't know what good it'll do me, but I had an extra CoV Collector's edition code and a GR code that I applied yesterday. -
Well, you don't have to worry about too many new AT sets and costumes coming out or Paragon forcing you to spend your money anymore...
-
Nifty. ^_^
I'll probably get more writing done on the next year, I think... >.> -
I was about a day 6 or day 7 player... and I also left the game for about 1 1/2 years. But anyway... been a long fun ride.

Things I was planning to do someday:
* Level my PB to 50, and my Crab Spider, Bane Spider, and Fortuna to 50, so that I could claim to have a 50 of everything, instead of just "one of two kheldian ATs and one of four SoA ATs". (My bane was named "Barbie Bane", I liked that one.)
* Finish that AE story I had planned which was basically helping a daughter save her father -- a "Tom Swift" style teen action adventurer (now quite old). With lots of over-the-top stuff and in-jokes.
* Level a toon from 1 to 50 all in Praetoria.
* Level up a whole lot of my other alts.
* That DfB 1-50 with 7 characters thing. Yeah, don't think I'm spending the last 3 months of the game on that one.
-----
On the other hand, I do intend to do a few of the things I still haven't done (which are few and far between). Still haven't played a Praetorian all the way up through those arcs, still haven't played through Night Ward, still haven't done the last of SSA1 or any of SSA2, which won't be complete of course, but I should do it. And there's probably at least 1 redside SF I haven't done yet. -
On the one hand, I don't generally identify myself as furry.
On the other hand, I have a wikifur entry.
I have a lot of friends who used to run Conifur up here in the Northwest. I attended Rainfurrest last year, it was a very fun con actually, much larger and better-run than Conifur ever was. I sat behind our Tai-Pan table most of the con. ^_^ -
The stories of Sister Flame were always some of the best ones on the boards. And her AE arc was a blast to play through. ^_^
-
You kept it a secret until now that you liked to spam the servers?
-
Well, given that everything on the market is player-supplied, I can't see that happening. And given that nobody is doing a thing to alter the game at this point, I can't see that happening. But there will probably be a lot of people dumping stuff on the market or giving stuff away, y'know...
-
Wow... we had no idea... >.>

My guess (from what I've heard) if you're VIP now, you should remain so until the servers shut down around Nov 30th.
