It's kinda funny, Inventions themselves are a reward, but getting the IOs you want and building a character can be a time sink.

Within the past year, I've basically started planning builds and playing with Mids while my toon is leveling to lvl 22, at lvl 22 I start frankenslot or insert the cheaper sets (or more likely the expensive sets that are cheaper in the late 20s early 30s). I place my bids low and let them sit while I level. My characters grow into maturity and by the 40s are usually pretty close to where I want them to be. I never use SOs or even non-set IOs unless for end redux, (toggles), endmod (stamina), or rech (click mez protection).

I don't really spend a whole lot of time at the market other then stopping by to drop off or pick up stuff. Once in a while I go on a spending spree and will spend 30 min to an hour at WWs running to the university and back to craft and sell, but thats usually when I'm tired and am just logging in to chat with friends and sg mates.

The biggest thing I see that kills me is seeing people spend 200 merits on a recipe they need (say Perf Shift +end) and slotting it when they coulda bought a LoTG +rech the salvage and sold it for 200mil. They then could have bought the perf shifter for a 10th of what they made, and had another 190mil to spend on the build... I shake my head everytime. I just did this and it will pretty much finance the rest of my Ice/MM's S/L soft capped build.

I think what he's saying is that if a squishy character can get 90% damage mitigation, something is out of whack. I recently respecced my Rad/Kin corr to have softcap S/L defense and I've got my Son/Rad corr softcapped to ranged
The thing is though, either a soft capped s/l build or a soft capped ranged build, only has 90% mitigation to 1 type of attack/ position. Completely soft capped to all postitions and/or damage types would be 90% mitigation, but you are leaving all sorts of room to either melee and AoE attacks with a ranged build, or any non-S/L typed attack with a s/l build. There are a plethora of things that can take down a single type of capped build, soft capping to a single position or type, is not as great as a /SR or /SD character. A blaster cannot have "/SR levels of protection" because they're DDR and hp scaling damage resistence don't exist for the blaster.
  3. Stalker Guru's and experts, what do you think of the below build?
I just started this character, so I have ALOT of time to adjust the build, and save up the inf. however I believe it should be a fairly inexpensive build, just need the IOs to be available.

  4. Here is a STD lvl 30 IO build. Just note that the Heal Set IOs in Energize are for reg. Heal IOs, mids just didn't have that available, which I think means I'm using one of the messed up versions on my PC, so you may not be able to import, but you can still see what the STD IO build looks like. Also you can swap that second Acc IO, with either a 2nd Rech or an End Redux, its up too you.

I have my Claw/Ela at lvl 28 and frankenslotted for Acc/Dam/Rech, on attacks, and slotted my shields with Reactive Armor to start working on my S/L defense.

I would highly recommend looking to frankenslot you attacks, look for the cheapest available set IOs around lvl 25-30, 2 Acc/Dam, 2 Dam/Rech, and 1 Dam/End should give you nice values that you won't have to reslot, ever, unless you switch to using full sets.

Do you think the best slotting for Static Shield would be a single EndReduction early, and damage resists as slots are available around lv 30?
And I'd highly suggest slotting Res first, then an End Redux. Claws gets and End discount, so /Ela is even less inclined to need then some other sets.

This is exactly what I fell into. You have to make an effort to unlock certain 20-40 contacts it seems and this avoided the luck of who you were offered. Ive never naturally been offered the freaklympics arc, however leveling this way I was able to get it as soon as I hit 29 (when the 25-29 arcs open up) and I don't have to worry about outleveling it or not getting xp while I play it. Plus you get the powers you earn while running it, its such a win win.

This is also why I posted this, so that others like me, could experience what i am right now, total rejuvination of the game. Plus you can "challenge" urself and play the earlier arcs you missed w/out the powers you're used too and see how you do. Although having bitter ice blast for the hollows arcs was pretty BA.

I had known that and been enjoying that with friends and TFs (Posi and Synapse are much less hair pulling now) but I hadn't ever given any thought to using it to actually level up through Ouro. It's alot of fun to just plow through the level 20-24 Archs with all of the powers you have up to 29 and still earn the xp.
  7. So while creating new characters is always fun for me, playing through the levels and leveling up has become quite monotonous. So while on my newest toy (Ice/Mental Blaster) I realized something. You still can earn XP while exemped, and you have access to more powers while zemped. This realization sparked an idea that has added alot more fun to the game for me.

Once I leveled to 25 (which is fairly easy) I started using Ouroborus solely. This gave me the power to pick exactly what Arch I wanted to play and I don't have to go through the "stupid" missions to get to the actual arch. You can use the O-portal to trasnport directly to the contact instead of slogging across multiple zones if you can't call, and you earn a ton of merits.

So I just wanted to share this idea with others so that if they are looking for a way to break routine don't forget about Ouroborus, this is where the xp while zemped has really shined for me, and hopefully it will work for others as well
  8. These are what I have that are on my home server (Liberty) I've just moved a bunch of unplayed characters over with free transfers to make room for new characters.

    Blasters:
    Psychocinder lvl 50 Fire/MM/Force
    Klyx lvl 50 Ice/Elec/Elec
    Mutant X-7 lvl 50 Nrg/EM/Force
    Psychoshot lvl 44 Arch/MM/Force
    Phoenixdown lvl 41 Fire/EM/Force
Sublimental lvl 28 Ice/MM/(Cold when the time comes)
    Exo-7 lvl 6 Rad/Ice
    Radfyre lvl 4 Rad/Fire

    Scrappers:
    Ex-7 Elm/SD/Blaze
    Clawfyre lvl 50 Claw/Fire/Dark
    Splyce lvl 50 Claw/WP/Body
Zero Defex lvl 28 Claw/Ela/(Body when the time comes)
    External lvl 24 Fire/SD
    Fyrecide lvl 10 Fire/Regen
    Fantom Ex lvl 8 Kat/Invuln
    Ex Blaze lvl 8 Fire/SR
    Fantom-X lvl 6 Kat/DA

    Defenders:
    Tryck lvl 28 TA/Dark
    Shadow-Veil lvl 20 Dark/Psi
    Kyd lvl 14 FF/Rad
    Xasmras lvl 4 Dark/Ice

    Tankers:
    MX-7 lvl 50 SD/EM/Pyre
    Blue - Fenix lvl 50 Invuln/EM/Pyre
    Ground Effex lvl 6 Ela/SS

    Trollers:
    Psychofusion lvl 14 Mind/Rad

    Villains:
    Psycinder lvl 50 Fire/Psi/GW Dominator
    Psychoshiver lvl 38 Ice/Psi Dominator
    Livewyre lvl 34 Elm/Nin Stalker
Mind FX lvl 18 Mind/Nrg Dominator
    Psychoshade lvl 13 Widow (Female)
    Laxx lvl 10 Elm/SD Brute
    Dartex lvl 6 Widow (Male)

I have a lvl mid 20s WS and a low 40s PB on different servers.

Anything that is below 20 is pretty much unplayed and was made a concept or something I wanted to try but stalled at a low level for one reason or another, most likely getting an idea for an alt that turned to be more fun. Anything under 10 was made just to see how a set looked (IE RAD blast with /fire and /ice to see what they looked like).

LOL. ok well, I would build for defense, being Kat/ I would look to get yourself a Single Divine Avalanche from the lethal/melee soft cap. Not sure what your budget is, but here is a non Purple/PVP, but still moderately expensive build:

It will get you to the melee soft cap with one DA, and past the lethal cap. You've got pretty decent recharge to get energize up more often (48s downtime) (you can forego the LOTG in Weave for the regular LOTG Def/Rech, provides the same defense value and is much cheaper and will only make you lose 1.5 seconds on Energize. The most costly thing will be the sets of obliteration then the kinetic combats, but shouldn't be too bad as long as your patient.
  10. War Mace, cuz it's pretty and strong!
  11. What are you going for? Do you want to make it more survivable? (More Defense, Typed or positional?), do you want more recharge, are you looking for more damage? There are a number of posibilities but kinda need to know what direction you are looking for. You have a bunch of sets that don't look to compliment each other very well. Personally I would be going for a +defense build:

Pair it with Ice/ for some blaptroller greatness. Give it the Elec Epic for a total of 3 ranged holds and a melee hold, + another AoE, Ice Storm, Frostbreath, and Static Discharge make for a very nice AoE compliment to the single target monster you will be.

I also would not recommend taking the dmg aura, it is an end hog, and you should be mixing ranged and melee attacks enough that the damage ticks won't add up nearly as much as having the end to fire off attakcs. YMMV

Key powers to take from /Elec are Charged Brawl, Havok Punch, Build Up, Power Sink, and Shocking Grasp. I'd say Skip Lightning Field and Lightning Clap (unless you are going to mule them out) and If you can fit Thunderstrike go for it, but its not necessary.

However if you really want to try something different I whole heartedly suggest a /Mental blaster. Ice/MM has reinvigorated my deep seeded blasting love.

I only have one character that I made an exemp. build for. It was my Fire/MM blaster who I made to solo Posi, he had a stealth proc/SS, and 6-slotted frankenslotted attacks. This was prior to I16 and I would need to respec to make sure I have the powers/slots I want since you get the +5 lvls worth of powers. He could totally have blaze and stamina, but not sure if those even have the slots allocated to them. I may do the same on either my Ice/MM or my Claw/Ela characters I've been leveling.

You're not really having fun if you use Mids. You're not really min-maxing unless you reinvent the wheel. You're not really enjoying yourself if you play popular powersets." Well, all those rules and regulations don't sound like fun, they sound like bureaucracy. When I look at the personal attacks they make against people who dare to play differently, I get the impression they're more interested in feeling superior to their fellow players than enjoying the game.
For me planning the build out in mids and adjusting as I play the character as necessary throughout its career depending on what it needs IS fun. just blindly leveling through the game and slotting whatever would not be fun for me, because I could end up with a steaming pile of dung, instead of the fun strong characters I make. On top of the Fire/MM and Fire/EM blasters, I also have an Nrg/Nrg, Nrg/Elec, Ice/Elec, and most recently a Ice/MM. I may have an Elm/SD scrapper but I also have a Claw/Fire and now a Claw/Ela. So while I may play popular combos, I also play less played ones as well. I'll will play what I feel is fun at the time I'm in the character creation screen regardless if it is well loved or not. I'm not going to NOT play something because "everyone" else does, but I'm not going to play something JUST because everyone else does either.

Not playing something "because everyone else is" is just as stupid a reason to play something "because everyone else is" , IMO

I definately don't just destroy any of the ones with value. I'll do a couple of different things, either build a Second build from the ground up (If I haven't used expensive IOs), respec out expensive IOs and slot in the second build, respec out expensive IOs and sell them, and completely reslot, or just leave in most of the lvl 25+ IOs and adjust a couple to enhance particular effects, however if it's only going to increase the power by 1-5% that isnt worth the cost investment to me, especially since sometimes there is a substantial cost difference between the lower level to higher level IO.
  16. Thanks Jay, thats really good to know, maybe now I can soft cap my Claw/Ela since I was gonna go with PP, but still had fitness in the build.

This works because it is a percentage of you base regen/recov?

That's pretty much my strategy, but only because for most toons getting IOs pre-50 wastes influence. Setting aside typed defense which usually comes from sets that max in the 30s and 40s, and the occasional Unique with a bonus that isn't level dependent, I find I am grinding through too many levels trying to get to 47. It's too bad, because it really would be much more fun in the 40's to be able to dabble with real IOs.
See I do the complete opposite. I start using IO's at lvl 25 and try to aquire set bonuses that will accumulate into my 30s and 40s. I had my Elm/SD Melee capped at lvl 35, ranged and AoE capped by 40. It definately adds a different dynamic to my gaming experience, because on top of growing my powers I grow the overall power of my character from 1-50 (well really 25-50, but you get the idea).

So, I've been at level 14 with this one for some time to prevent this and see more.
Not sure what your highest level char. is, or if you've come across ouroborus (ouro) yet, but with the ouro-portal (o-portal) you can go back and redo the missions/story arc's at their level despite the level you are at (Ouro auto zemps you like on a task force). (hope that made sense). I plan on doing this with my Ice/Mental blaster I am currently playing. With the latest change to Exemping since you can still get Xp and have +5 levels of powers to the zemp level, I think this may be a very fun way to trek 50.

This is exactly what I do, and have to agree that min/maxers are a very uncommon thing.

I know a few people who do build a character as strong as possible, but the vast majority of players I come across are no where near the maximum potential of the build.
  21. I'd go with Dark/Rad/Psi. Color the Rad something bright or maybe even Red? (just think It would look cool). I'll be leveling a Dark/Ice/Psi myself soon, while he will be magic, he won't be a "dr. strange" type, however maybe could possibly work for one.
  22. I've got Claw/WP, /Dark, /Fire, and /Ela. I've gotta say the Dmg Aura's from dark, fire and ela make them alot more fun then the WP. The Claw/Ela is my newest scrapping toy and he's a joy to play. Frankenslotted atm, so no set bonuses, but eventually will have about 50% rech (with lightning reflexes [quickness clone]) and 35% s/l defense. I think once I get to 35 with the vanguard claws he will look as cool as he feels to play.

I'd definately recommend either Claw/Fire or /Ela for a solid and fun scrap.
  23. I'd take the slot out of Tough, it looks like it gives the least amount to your total build, especially if it's not used.
  24. I've just started (lvl 18 atm) and am loving my Ice/Mental. It seems like it will have very good utility, frost breath and ice storm slotted for damage and slows + Snow Storm, holds and drain psyche, I'm going with the Cold Epic to cap s/l defense, hoarfrost, hibernate, and snowstorm. Seems like a good pairing and not something I've seen alot of.
  25. I would definately say Claws/ as the primary. You get your optimal ST chain (with the new zemp rules), good AoE (Spin). I would think Claw/WP would be optimal with the ST chain, no need for fitness (with QR @ 20) leaving room for SS + stealth or stealth proc for stealthing missions.

Here is an example of something I think might work (and be cheap).
I stopped at lvl 20 however any power choices after won't be of effect and you can add slots to flavor.
