If you want a thematic pairing, EM is the most obvious match for EA. I still don't see many SR brutes around, so if you want to roll something uncommon, this might be a good route.
Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.

With power customization, you really can do just about make any powerset 'match' and with some creative writing, you can make just about anything work. Obviously, the pink pom-poms of doom is the obvious pairing, but I strongly recommend against it for one simple reason: If you're wanting to be unique, don't go with the typical pairing!

-WM/EA is a good combination. Besides having the cult-reference to strong and pretty, it offers a good combination of mitigation options and offers acceptable levels of AoE and single target damage. While you said you didn't want to hear about build, having a balance of single-target and AoE attacks will increase your flexibility with IO sets.
-WM/SD can be pretty clever. Nothing quite makes a statement like a character with a pipe wrench and a manhole cover. 'Nuff said.
-DM/NRG would do alright. The to-hit debuff would help increase your survivability if you choose to avoid IO'ing out the character, coupled with siphon life. I like dark melee.
Just about any set combination would work if you think hard enough about it.
I have a DB/EA at lvl 31 that I like a lot, the combos really help my survivability. But it's not an easy build. Dark Melee is a great pairing with ea, the hit debuffs vastly increase your defense and you have a good heal in Siphon Life. (Energy Drain from EA isn't a reliable heal except when you are surrounded- plus the animation is SLOOOOOW).

IME, EA is a set that works well with a primary that offers some damage mitigation besides, well, damage. SS, Stone, Mace, and Axe are the first ones that come to mind using that standard, but of course you can make EA work with any primary.
Case in point, I have a FM/EA brute that I got to 50, though I have to say that the early levels were pretty rough.

I kinda wish they had EA for Scrappers.Im not totally one for chasing the Fury bar, but I will if I have too.
My first brute to get to 50 was a EM/WP brute. the atacks are a lil slow but not very costly when Quick recovery and stamina combined.
I'm plowing through missions with a claw/EA brute right now. Loving it.

I get the feeling that Endurance is going to be a issue early on, so ill brace my self for that impact.
Also, iv got the thought in mind to make the 2 Brutes Tech Origin based, and with both the armor sets in mind, thats not a hard issue to make them "Techy".
I guess that the issue is now double trouble, because now i need to find 2 diffrent melee sets to match up with these armors.
I guess SS could be combo'd with SR, mainly because I can see a man with cybornetic implantation having Robotic Strength, and Enhanced Reflexes.From what iv been reading on the resistance % for SR's defense, makes it seem like this wont be too much of a issue in the long run, when Rage crashes.(If it causes a severe drop in my Def %'s that im not seeing, someone let me know, please.)
If SS gives to big of a Def% issues, ill prolly switch to Elec Melee.
Then theres EA.I may go with Energy Melee, mainly because no one takes that route anymore, everyone complains its broken, and I could make a Robotic Brute that uses energy from a internal power source.Plutonium, Nuclear Energy, Plasma Energy, whatcher I choose for the back story on his capability to use Energy that much, and use the Fury bar as a "Energy Catalist", and not a Fury bar.More like saying the energy builds up over time with alot of use, or gets hotter, or something like that.
Good things I have Self Destruct.it matches the Energy Robot Brute Thematically.Not that id use it a whole lot though...
Never been much of a fan with EA, even after several attempts leveling a brute per and post buffs to EA.
I do know a fair bit about /SR and it's a late blooming set. It was tough for the first 28-ish levels until I could invest slots and decent enhancements into my build but now, at 50 and softcapped, it's a monster.
Iv been juggling around a Brute build id wanna play, and /SR, /SD, /WP, /Rock Armor sets that are widely used, just dont appeal to me.
(Im on Freedom, so of coarse no one uses it!)
So im thinking of going the Energy Aura route.I dont see anyone touching that set, so I might as well give it a go.
My only question I have, is what Primary to put with it?Hmmmm, EM/EA?
Maybe, not sure yet.
Anyone got any suggjestions?
Please, leave out the Min/Max part of it.I want a good Thematic match for Energy Aura, not a speech on whats the best.
