Claws/SR and Sleep/Imobilze/Hold

Hi,

I'm relatively new and I'm trying out a new scrapper that I lovingly refer to as Miss Sleeping/Held/Stunned.

She's currently at level 14 and it seems that if an enemy can inflict one of these things that they do so with near 100% accuracy. Just last night she got in a fight with a CoT Madness Mage and she was asleep for over 10 minutes. Nothing else happening. The madness mage just kept putting her to sleep while I waited for something else to happen. Finally she got in one wack in between naps and he blew up, then she went to the hosp, but at least it was over and it was something different. (I went back after restocking my supply of break frees)

Anyway, I was wondering if there is anything that I can do to help with this problem, suggestions of which powers may make this happen less often.

Before you answer I just want to let you know that I'm not into Min/Maxing or creating the perfect build. I create heroes based on a concept and try my best to stick with that concept adding powers that I believe fit the character and not necessarily what is best to win. In addition to claws and super reflexes I am working on the leaping and health power pools, again, because I think they fit and I may not even take all of these.

My question is simply, are there powers that can help with this so that I can decide if they will fit with my concept of who she is or should I make sure I always stock up of break frees. Will this change in the future as she gains levels or is it something that I can depend on staying the same and that I need to learn to live with? Will some of the powers in her primary and secondary that I'll get later alleviate some of this problem?

Practiced Brawler is available to SR at level 10 and it will protect from all the standard mezz type powers. If you put a second slot into it and use 2 SO recharges once you reach level 22 it will recharge before it expires unless you are severely debuffed. It is one of the pains of playing SR in the low levels so for the next few levels you can bring some break frees along.

Thank you JAXMAN for the quick reply. I haven't taken practiced brawler yet do to making choices about power pools and such. This advice has definitely pushed it's selection to the top of the list for level 16 and adding an enhancement slot at 17, though I won't have access to SO's until 22 at least I know that this can be helped at some point and I won't be using that pet name forever and that even with DO's things may improve somewhat.

I always expect some growing pains but I haven't run into a trouble as bad as this before. Granted, I haven't been playing that long and I'm sure there are others

What powers have you chosen so far?

I don't know if it holds true for critters, but on hero powers, sleeps have higher than normal accuracy.

As a lowbie /SR, you have practically no defense, and you'll never have defense against pure psi attacks, which includes the sleeps. Happily, Practiced Brawler will make you immune to the effects.

Since Practiced Brawler won't be on permanently until you have 2 SO recharges in it, your best bet is to take it, and click it right before you get into a fight with a Madness Mage, or with Ruin Mages who drop those earthquakes that make you flop around. Practiced Brawlers will protect you against nearly every status effect except Terror, but few critters have a Terror power so it's not a big deal.

If you haven't already used your Alternate Build, the next time you're at a trainer, try selecting your alternate build and you can re-choose your powers up to your current level.

If you can work it so you get Practiced Brawler at 10, and the Focus at 18, you'll be sitting pretty. Focus is a knockdown with a 40' range, so if you see a troublesome critter up ahead and PB isn't recharged or active, you can click Focus and start running towards them, and it'll knock the critter down as you get close enough for them to see you. WIN!

I'm glad you realize that being mezzed for a scrapper is a problem. I've seen so many new players who power level new scrappers and tanks and never take their mez protection. They get to level 35 or so and wonder why they're on their backs most of the time when other scrappers/tanks aren't. I've seen a level 41 dm/sr without practiced brawler about a week ago.

Please don't take this post as me trying to put you down. I'm actually praising you that you realize there's an issue with your scrapper and you're taking steps to correct it.

To be honest, off the top of my head, I'm not quite sure. I'm pretty sure it's the first 2 attacks and the first 3 defense and in Fitness, swift and health and in leaping just Combat Jumping.

I'll give the alternate build some thought, but I like to try to live with my choices, mostly because it gives me a better understanding of what works and what doesn't. Using the alternate build now means that I won't have that option in the future and who knows what other mistakes I'll make. Better to try to live with it and save that Alt for as long as I can.

Not at all, That's why I'm here, I'm extremely new to the game and most advice is helpful. the example I gave above was rather frustrating since the only enemy was the mage and little damage was being inflicted to my the hero and it was quirte frustrating. I was left with continuously clicking on an attack hoping to get lucky. I was just thinking that I'm going to have to power down my computer to get out of it when I managed the hit that caused him to explode.

Looking at the descriptions when choosing new powers is still a little confusing. For example, the description of Practiced Brawler coupled with the long recharge time and high endurance cost (which is what I got out of the short description) led me to believe that I could better spend the choice on another attack or in on one of the pool powers, not realizing that this would be more beneficial later on.

Some scrapper sets don't get their mezz protection until level 16 so don't feel to bad about not picking it up right away when it became available. And in truth Circle of Thorns give almost everyone difficulties in the teens.

I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

For that matter, I think the teens are just a generally difficult period for Scrappers. It gets better in the twenties. Super Reflexes is a late-blooming secondary, so it could even be the thirties before you're feeling really solid. It's worth the dues you have to pay.

One thing I've done on a few of my /SR characters of late is 3 slotting Practiced Brawler with the intent or knowledge that I will be using a respec later on and can reduce the number of slots used at that time. By placing 3 lvl 15 recharge IO's (minimal downtime, something around 7 seconds lack of coverage) or 3 lvl 20 recharge IO's (perma) mez protection issues are minimized. Admittedly this might not work as well for someone newer to the game and hence no vet respecs available.

At least you didn't build the SR I saw on a STF (of all places).

DM/SR. Everything from DM. From SR: Focused Fighting (that was never turned on), Agile, Practiced Brawler....and nothing else.

No fitness pool, and 3 travel powers (started with Flurry, Jump Kick, and TP Foe)

He was level 50 and didn't have a single "damage taken" badge (I checked). I would have laughed and not done much else, but he started blaming the tank for him dying all the time, when he was running in and firing off Soul Drain and Dark Consumption before anyone else had gotten there.

My point being Hube02, is that you are MILES ahead of that guy, who was PLed to 50 without ever doing anything. You're recognizing that you have an issue and are coming to the forums to find out how to correct the problem.

One of my mottos: The only stupid question is the one that is never asked.

I've found this with most of the characters I've tried so far, and this one in particular. With the others I did not see much, I took the missions that sounded interesting, avoiding the ones that I knew would cause a problem and as a result I usually leveled out of the contact before ever completing. The only ones that I tried to make sure I completed where the story arcs. (Then again, when I started I didn't realize that the contacts stopped talking to me because the hero reached a certain level). So, I've been at level 14 with this one for some time to prevent this and see more.

Not a problem for Miss Sleepy Time I'm well on my way to getting the first damage and debt repay badges and I've only got a few more minutes of held/immobilized/sleeping left to get that badge. Although, having XP turned off through 20 missions has helped ad to this. Quite honestly, and this is only from my newbie viewpoint, those are important milestones to reach. Only my tank I proudly display the "Indestructible" badge title. She had trouble in her teens as well.

Not sure what your highest level char. is, or if you've come across ouroborus (ouro) yet, but with the ouro-portal (o-portal) you can go back and redo the missions/story arc's at their level despite the level you are at (Ouro auto zemps you like on a task force). (hope that made sense). I plan on doing this with my Ice/Mental blaster I am currently playing. With the latest change to Exemping since you can still get Xp and have +5 levels of powers to the zemp level, I think this may be a very fun way to trek 50.

Yup, ran into ouroborus with my first toon (the tank) and I make sure I do that arc every time now (I feel like the character is kinda naked without the ability to use that travel option, makes it so much easier to get around). I have done a few of the arcs that she missed along the way there, but the only thing really available that way are the arcs and I want to see some of the other missions as well, although I may skip many of the ones that I've seen with other toons I'd like to explore what's available and take a slower approach. I'm sure most people have seen it all, but this is all new and exciting to me. I like taking my time, reading the clues and following the stories.

Haven't gotten a 50 yet.

You'll get there. And if you've started anything like I did, it will probably be with a character you haven't even created yet (my claws/regen namesake wasn't created until I'd been playing for 5 months)

It won't be a problem for a while, but keep in mind that you may need a Break Free or two again when you start fighting the Carnival of Shadows. It was a nasty shock on my Super Reflexes scrapper when one of the bosses used a fear on me. I hadn't been shut down like that since I picked up Practiced Brawler.

Heck depending on what you set your rep to I've gotten held right thru PB by both Carnies (the MI and friends) and Rikti stacking holds on me. I make it a practice to try and always have a breakfree or two among the inspires I carry.

An update.

Up to level 19 now and I took Practiced Brawler at 16 as suggested and slotted two recharge reduction at 17. With two 20++ DO's the difference between duration and recharge is 24 seconds. Miss sleepy time still gets held/slept/immobilized/disorientate, but not nearly as much. At least they do not hit 100% of the time now.

Just in case you didn't know - you can get the Ouro portal without doing any arcs by clicking on someone else's portal, and then going to the top of that arch that stretches from the top of the building down to by the pool.

There's an exploration badge there, and getting the badge gives the Portal. It's a handy way to get the portal if you hit 25 on a TF or something and haven't otherwise done a "temporal disturbance" arc.

Once you hit 22 and get SOs in it, it should become perma.

(Hint: Take Quickness in the early 20's, it really helps)

This thread reminds me of my first time playing this game...rolled a spine/regen, pretty much made all the worst decisions...learned and moved on. But yeah, take chances, make mistakes, get messy. Best way to learn.

I don't think I'll ever be that person that broadcasts "Hey, anyone got an Ouro protal I can borrow". Besides, I've generally always got my own well before hitting 25. (They never broadcast where I am or I would let them use it, maybe, if I was planning to use it). Quite frankly it is the main may I cut down my travel time. Going to Bricks, Ouro to Talos and you're right next to Green Line. Then I'll tell you that I never take a travel power as soon as they become available, I find there are other more important things that I need first.

Anyqwy.. at level 20, go see city rep and do cape arc, go to icon and save them from the Tsoo, do the Midnight Arcs that lead up to Ouro. By 22 you have the portal.

Is it sad that, when I started playing, my first instinct was to go out and do some research to found out how stuff worked before I started doing things haphazardly?

No Umbral, it's not Sad, It's in Character.
But if that wasn't the case all those of us who rely on you would never be able to ask you how best to build a scrapper!
So its ummm happy.
