  1. It's all about how you use RoF.

If you Aim > BU > RoF The mobs will scatter before they are defeated or spread out far enough to limit the effectiveness of your other AoEs.

The trick is to Aim > BU > Fire Breath > Fire Ball and THEN RoF where you are standing. The mobs will be trying to close to melee range to smack you. The slow effect means they'll get one shot at you and then the Avoid + Damage effect will have them turning tail and running but by then it will be too late and they will have spent most of the duration of the RoF in its area of effect.

To answer your other question: 5 slot Posi Blast and a HO micro. Some players consider this an exploit and the Devs, both old guard and current crop, have been known to go both ways on whether its an exploit or whether it is working as (un)intended.
  2. I like my Arch/Dev/Munitions but I rarely play him any more. He's really only good for soloing and he's safe but very slow for that. He's not all that good for teams since almost all of the secondary powers with the exception of Web Grenade and Caltrops have excruciating Activations/Interrupts/Endurance costs.

Some caveats and information on Arch/Dev. What I chose, how I slotted it, and why I see it that way:

Web Grenade -This is your have to take power from the secondary. It's actually quite useful since even targets that it doesn't immobiilized will be slowed and suffer a massive recharge penalty.

Caltrops - One of, if not the, best power in devices. With enough recharge you can have 3 patches out at once. Nothing is going to be getting into melee range with you. I gave it 4 slots with the End/rech/slow enhancement from each of the slow sets.

Taser - Extreme Short range, standard duration stun. If you are using the above 2 powers properly nothing will ever get close enough to use it. It can be useful combined with Stunning shot vs bosses but most likely the bosses will be dead before they get into taser range. I skipped it.

Targetting Drone - For an Arch/Dev I don't recommend taking this power. There are several reasons.

    1) Archery has a higher base accuracy than any other blaster primary. You get more mileage out of your accuracy enhancements.

    2) High endurance cost especially considering how few powers in Arch/Dev that it helps. (This power does nothing for Caltrops or Cloaking Device)

Targetting Drone does nothing for Pet and Psuedo Pet powers. These powers will need accuracy enhancements to function effectively:

Rain of Arrows (psuedo pet based rain power), Trip Mine (psuedo pet), Time Bomb (psuedo pet), Gun Drone (pet).

    3) Supresses when mezzed. While you are mezzed you get no benefit from Targetting Drone but blasters get to fire their tier 1 and 2 primary powers and tier 1 secondary power even while mezzed. That means that Snap Shot, Aimed Shot, and Web Grenade will still need standard accuracy enhancement so that you can hit your targets while mezzed. In the late game (especially against Carnies) you'll spend most of your time mezzed and only get to use these 3 powers though pre-laid trip mines and caltrops will keep you relatively safe enough that these missions are still soloable.

Adding all that up only 8 out of the 18 powers in Arch/Dev, get any benefit from the drone.

The benefits that you do get from Targetting Drone can easily be simulated by other means. TD gives + to hit, +perception, and resistance to tohit Debuffs.

You can get + to hit from slotting a Kismet Unique in Combat Jumping, using Aim, and from using yellow inspirations which fall like rain while playing.

You can get +perception from slotting a Rectified Reticle Unique in Aim. Granted it's not as much + perception as TD provides but it is still enough to see through Night Widow smoke grenades and fire at disappearing targets like Ghosts and Ancestor Spirits.

You can't get tohit debuff resistance from any other source but you can avoid the worst of the debuffers through smart play. The time this is most useful is in the mid 20s to high 30s when you run into CoT ghosts. You have alot of tools to use at your disposal to prevent being debuffed in the first place:

Ghosts will fly over your caltrop patch but web grenade gives them -fly and solves that problem. You can also use stunning shot to detoggle them and if all else fails you can use Aim or a yellow insp to counter the debuff.

On top of all that you can slot several +accuracy set bonuses by using sets like Positron's blast and Scirroco's Dervish.

All in all I found TD to be of little utilty for my Arch/Dev and respecc'd out of it early on.

Smoke Grenade - The to hit debuff is minor and the -perception can be worked around by using some combination of stealth powers such as Super Speed, Cloaking Device, Stealth, and a Stealth IO. All in all this power is entirely skippable. The only reason I had it was as a mule for a Dark Watcher's set. I respecc'd out of this power early on.

Cloaking Device - A decent power as there is no movement penalty and it provides a slighly higher defense boost than it's pool equivalent, how ever I recommend skipping this one too and taking the Stealth Pool instead. The reasons being that you can slot an LotG +7.5 in Stealth, Grant Invis and Invis and one of the things you'll need as a blaster and won't get until very very late game from your APP (if it has one) is a rescue power for when you get over whelmed. Phase Shift is available at level 20 and I highly reccomend the pool route to get this power at level 20. Since you can't use Cloaking Device and Stealth at the same time I recommend skipping Cloaking Device. You can compensate for the -speed in Stealth by using it in combination with Super Speed.

Trip Mine - A good power if you don't mind SLOOOOOW. 5 second cast and a 4 second interrupt and a recharge speed of 20 seconds means this is a power you won't use on a team. If you are soloing as a trapper this will be a staple power. A slotted up stack of 6 will wipe out an entire spawn including the boss in one large explosion. It will also take you 2 full minutes to set up.

The best use that I have found for trip mine is to drop a mine between me and the spawn and put caltrops on it. Drop one or 2 of these Caltrop/trip mine patches depending on spawn composition and then unload your AoEs. Aim + RoA > Explosive Arrow > Fist full and anything that's left will get stuck in the caltrops and run afoul of the trip mine.

I slotted it with 5 pieces of Obliteration (every thing but the proc) and a Multistrike Dam/Rech.

Time Bomb - A good power if you don't mind excruciatingly SLOOOOOW. 9 second cast and a 8 second interrupt and then a count down to detonation of 15 seconds all on top of a 360 second recharge means this is also a power you won't use on a team. If you are soloing as a trapper you can place a time bomb, back up and drop a trip mine, throw caltrops on it, you then have a couple seconds to wait, but if you hit Aim as the light on the time bomb starts blinking faster and immediately fire RoA onto the Time Bomb both powers will do their damage simultaneously and you'll wipe out the spawn. Anything that gets missed will be easy to finish off with your other attacks or the Caltrop/Trip mine patch.

I took this power and slotted it the same as Trip Mine.

Gun Drone - This power is a huge disappointment. It has a 7 second cast, 6 second interrupt, and a 180 second recharge. It only lasts 90 seconds and can be destroyed by enemy fire. It costs 39 endurance, does just a little more damage than Snap Shot each time it fires, and it moves at standard speed which means you'll consistantly out distance it even if all you did was put one run enhancement in Swift.

Gun Drone will interfere with trapping as it is not stealthed and will begin attacking the spawn you are setting up for spoiling the set up.

The only thing it is really good for is soloing in a high mez environment (like Carnies) as it is unaffected by mez.

    I skipped this power.
  3. I agree with Vanden. I ran hero stats on my Fire/Fire Dom for awhile and much to my surprise my highest total damage powers were consistantly Combustion and Hot Feet (and in that order too) I hate the long animation of Combustion and the inherent risk that results but it puts out too much of /Fire's damage to skip.

The issue is that I don't have a farmer in the traditional sense and I refuse to make one (such as a fire/kin controller). So I use whatever level 50 I have at hand, which right now just so happens to be my tank. With that being said, AE farming is a very long and arduous process, boring too. However, I do farm tickets every now and then to keep my WW slots full.

As far as not wanting to wait or paying exorbitant prices? I don't think anyone wants to be paying 10 to 20 (or more) times the normal cost of anything. I don't have time to play every day so I don't want to be waiting to buy something. Selling is obviously a different matter. Before the incarnate trials, if I wanted a circuit board immediately, it normally had cost around 500 if I wanted to wait or that much or slightly higher if I wanted it immediately. It did not cost 200 times the amount.

It's all well and good that some of you in this forum have the time to be farming and logging in every single day, but for many of us out there we simply don't have the time to dedicate as we once had. The only positive this has brought is that sought after enhancements have come way down in price
I'm responding to your post and others that are like it, not picking on you particularly.

What you are talking about is an entitlement mentality.

You are upset that people aren't playing midrange content and midrange characters and producing salvage in that tier and that is making it less fun for you to play the game.

What that effectively translates to is:

You all need to waste your time doing something not fun and provide the proceeds of that not fun time to me at a fraction of their opportunity cost so that I don't have to waste my time doing something that isn't fun.

I'm not presuming to speak for Gatecrasher, but what I believe he is getting at is to take one of your own midrange characters (or exemp through Oro), run a mid range mission or midrange arc, and gleemail yourself one of the circuit boards that drop. A single mission should net you more than 1 circuit board and will take you 15 minutes at most.

A level 50 buffing defender can generate 2 million inf in an hour (other ATs can generate far more). If all you want to do is play your level 50 toons and can't be bothered to generate your own salvage then you should pony up for the people who do bother. After all 100k is only 3 minutes worth of income for a level 50.

    What to make???

For massive PBAoE damage a Rad/Fire/Mace blaster soft capped to S/L.
  9. I just want to be able to buy my gun drones from the same weapons store that Malta get theirs from. The Malta version is what gun drone for the players should be. It's time for an update.
  10. You can get another 60 seconds of FoNish style survivability with the Eye of the magus accolade.....
  11. Mind/Ice/Fire is an amazing combo even using SOs alone.

You get several exotic damage types (Cold, Fire, and Psi) and you can layer soft controls (slows, fear, sleeps).

Ice has power boost in the secondary so you can increase the duration of your AoE controls by using both Power Boost and Domination. When solo this can be quite handy as power boosted controls will last long enough to defeat the spawns.

I went with /Ice over /Energy for 2 reasons, Energy doesn't have a good ranged AoE, and /Ice has the fastest animations of all the Dom secondaries. It is a bit light on damage but the Fire Epic makes up for that quite nicely.

Once you see how much better the Dom is when Domination is up you may be tempted to go for Perma. It makes a world of difference and it is most definately worth the effort.

If blasters were again *clearly* (yes, I know, some blasters can still outdamage all other ATs, but it's just not that big a margin any more, and not all blaster combos/builds can do this in any case) the damage kings of the game, I wouldn't mind the lack of any built-in defenses.

Having said that, everyone is outputting so much damage anyway, esp at 50, giving blasters yet more damage might break the game even more than it currently is. So maybe the more practical route is to give blasters a bit more innate survivability, though too much and the question will be flipped to, why scrappers?
Yep heard those arguments before too. The comparison is misleading.

Glass cannon was valid back in the days when blasters actually out ranged stuff and could get a few attacks off before stuff entered melee range with them. The devs patched that "exploit" out.

I personally have no problem with a High damage output low mitigation AT. I have no problem with an AT that's designed to survive through active mitigation. The problem is that in order to do so the blaster has to be able to stay active. Mez means that a blaster is no longer active. Having no built in remedy to that issue is the part of the design that's bad.

The dev reasoning for mez protection is that toons that have it available are designed to be in melee. Tanks, scrappers, brutes all are designed to be in melee. Veats and Doms are also designed to be in melee at least part of the time. They too have reliable mez protection available to them.

The blaster secondary is, in most cases, designed to be used in melee yet the blaster has no real mez pretection available to them. This is contrary to the design purpose of mez protection.

You get quite a bit of melee defense when you soft cap S/L.

My Rad/Fire build can soft cap melee defense with a single small purple insp (which I have to do frequently anyway, machine guns are lethal and have a hefty defense debuff to them). That puts ranged and AoE over 25% at the same time.

It isn't damage that blasters need, it's survivability. Personally I see being defeated as losing. The idea that RotP "should" be part of my attack chain seems like an oxymoron.

The survival tools that a blaster has are active mitigation. That means that the blaster has to stay active or be defeated. Mez means the blaster is no longer active and even now most of my blaster defeats are due to mez.

Let's see where do I get mez protection.... It's not in my primary..... Not in my secondary, gee its not in my epic either, can't get it in pool powers (ok a bit in acro but it's not worth all the power picks required or the endurance cost), can't get it from IOs. Guess I have to use the insp tray for that.

Now how about defenses..... nothing in the primary..... Nothing in the secondary (well a tiny bit in devices), a little bit in the pool powers, not enough to really make a difference, one Epic power has a moderate amount but only against 2 damage types, it comes way too late in my career, and it supresses if I get mezzed. I can get quite a bit from set IOs but it takes lots and lots of time and influence to do so.... Guess I have to look at the inspiration tray again.

Resitances pretty much the same, none in the primary, none in the secondary, I get a low to moderate amount in my Epic but to mainly to just 2 damage types again. I can get more resistance to that 2 damage types by taking a Pool power but it wastes a power pick to get there and I start getting to the point that I'm wasting so much endurance running toggle resistances that I can cripple my damage output, besides that it supresses if I get mezzed. I can't really get any extra resistances with IO sets. (Well I "can" get some to Psi, Fire, and Cold but only from the most rare and expensive IO sets). Guess I have to look to the inspiration tray again.

So it's pretty well established that I'm going to be taking some damage. So where do I get some hit point recovery from..... Nothing in the Primary, No heal in the secondary.... oh, wait, I forgot rest but.... that's on a really long recharge, makes me vulnerable for far too long, and can't be used in combat. It reduces my damage output to 0 for far too long to be seriously considered. Ohhh look there's one in the pool powers again. That means I have to waste a power pick to get to it. It's got a pretty long animation and it can be interrupted so have to be careful using it as I can take more damage during the animation time than it heals. Looks like the best way to use it is to run away (that doesn't seem very heroic to me) and drop my damage output to 0 for a few seconds to recover halfish of my hit points. One Epic gives me a non-interruptible self heal but its on a really really long timer. It won't be available nearly as often as I'll need it. I can get a tiny bit of healing from some IO set procs but the math shows that I'm better off building for Regen than depending on them. I'll probably wind up dipping into the insp tray again.

What about rescue powers? Hmmmm nothing in my primary, nothing in my secondary. Oh look there's a couple in the Epics. Hibernation.... Hmmm reduces damage output to 0 and it's a level 47 power comes quite late to be useful. It lets me heal without taking any damage or being interrupted, takes a while to recharge, and leaves me potentially stuck in a swarm of bad guys when it wears off. AH wait PFF, recharges quick, low slot consumption.... Shoot, reduces damage output to 0 again, but at least I can get it at level 41. I can use aid self while in PFF, of course I can still take damage, get interrupted, and if I get mezzed I'm hosed. I can move away from a swarm of bad guys but that still sounds suspiciously like bravely running away again. What about Pools? Cool look at that, Phase Shift. I can get that at level 20 but it costs 2 powers to get there, I can use aid self with out risking being interrupted, still reduces my damage output to 0 though and it takes a while to recharge, solves the mez problem though.

Long and short of it is, unlike every other AT out there, the blaster's most reliable source of mitigation is the inspiration tray. All my blasters gobble insps faster than kids eat candy. All of my other toons can usually ignore the insp tray.

In my opinion there's something intrinsically wrong with that from a design standpoint.
  15. Blasters exist so that buffing defenders have something to do on a team.

Post invention system and Going Rogue there was no reason to roll a defender instead of a corruptor. The incarnate trials have changed that. The better Defender buffs are again useful (but only in that part of the game) and can be useful for the entire team and not simply for the squishy blasters.

Certain corruptor combinations can both outdamage and out survive a blaster.

Scrappers significantly out survive blasters, many of them can out damage a blaster too especially if you figure survivability into the equation. A defeated blaster's damage output is zero.

Cloaking Device, a Stealth proc IO, and the Stealth effects from Super Speed can all be used together.

Cloaking device and the Pool Power Stealth can not be used together (the powers are mutually exclusive.)

Last time I checked Soul Tentacles was base range 40 and Web Envelope was base range 80. Adding range to Web Envelope by using /EM's Boost Range, Alpha Cardiac, and/or range enhancements has the potential to keep mobs completely out of retaliation range while still within your potential attack range. Soul does not give this opportunity.

This doesn't even get into the possibility that a significant percentage of players skip their snipes, but if they did, this would only heighten an existing demand imbalance between the two piece types, viewed as categories.

So we've probably got at least 3x as many powers out there wanting ranged sets as snipe sets. At the same time, at level 50 (which a lot of people are playing at now due to Incarnate stuff), we have five sniper sets and two ranged sets. As far as I know, mob drops (pool A) are not weighted the way Merit and ticket random rolls were back in I16. So, for same-rarity items we actually get something like a 2.5:1 ratio of snipe drops as ranged set drops, when on a level of relative number of powers, we need at something like at least a 3:1 ratio in the other direction. In other words, we're massively oversupplied with pool A (and probably B) snipe pieces.

When I get snipe drops, I delete everything except Manticore pieces. I sometimes end up deleting those once I check the market, but sometimes they're worth crafting and selling.

Not to mention that you "can" slot ranged damage sets in a snipe power but not the other way around.

    That was argued in Beta.

Suppressive fire is a term used in military science and defined by NATO as “fire that degrades the performance of a target below the level needed to fulfill its mission. Suppression is usually only effective for the duration of the fire.”

It should have been -to hit and -damage.
  21. Don't forget that Alpha Cardiac will also increase your range.

Your problem with your build will be surviving long enough to utilize all those cones.

A suggestion along that line would be to switch to Mace mastery. Yes I know there are no additional cones but using hover and Web Envelope (a base range 80, AoE immob) along with Scoprion sheild can solve your problem.

Web Envelope applies a -fly, a -jump, and an Immob to the targets keeping them where you want them. If you use Hover this can, in theory, keep them where you want them and potentially out of their range while still in yours.

Slotting your secondary powers with Kinetic Combats can boost your S/L defense to reasonable levels. This combined with all the extra range should solve the survival problem.

If there is something annoying about a power set or an arch type then after the first run through to see if it's the power set/AT and what I might do to playstyle to compensate and it still comes up lacking that particular power set/AT no longer sees any play time. That's not a good thing (at least in a customer/customer service sense) as it decreases the potential for me and people like me to continue playing (ie: renewing subscription) if I'm out of new stuff to try AND the old stuff no longer holds my attention because it's annoying instead of fun.

Right now DP is in the catagory of annoying rather than fun. It's a combination of both the animations and the shortcomings where the power set is concerned.

I need no excuses to point out DP's flaws as there are many and the advantages are gloss worthy because they are few.

My blasters are many and vaired (Arch/Dev/Munitions, Fire/Fire/Fire, Ice/Fire/Force, Rad/Fire/Mace, Energy/Energy/Force, Fire/EM/Force, AR/EM/Ice, Arch/Ice/Ice, Sonic/Ice/Elec, Energy/Elec/Fire, Ice/Elec/Mace just to name the ones high enough level to have epic powers) but (until today) I couldn't see a good use for DP.

My wife and I were talking about DP and this thread. She is pretty much of the same opinion I am on both the animations and powers. (I think that may have more to do with our age and generation than anything else). In any case we decided to play to both the strengths and weaknesses of DP at the same time. We both believe that the animations look ridiculous so our theme in this case is one of silliness.

Both of us are wearing jesters outfits. She thought that amunition and Electricity don't mix so she rolled a DP/Elec Blaster. I went with Dark/DP defender and the whole idea that shooting stuff = - damage so I'll be using mainly Chem rounds. I'm also going 3 or 4 procs in each DP power the rest of the slots will be franken slotted for Acc, Rech, and End. I even went so far as putting boxing gloves my my toon and making that the RP reason that the pistols are always spinning around and flying into the air, but that was just a bit too silly and I went back to Jester's gloves.

My wife has a rule of 3. 3 defeats and that's it for that play session. She signs out after she finishes the mission. If she's really frustrated she exits the mission, auto completes, and then logs out. We are extending the rule of 3 to both characters for this. We got to level 7 today before we died a total of 3 times. I doubt that we'll get the toons much past 20 before she shelves it or deletes it (judging from past experience) but what the heck, we both should get some laughs out of it, so if you play on Justice and see Super Sillyous and Super Silly Yes (a play on Supercilious for both of us) you'll know who it is.

I am perfectly fine with occasional posts suggesting improvements to Pistols, just like I am fine with suggesting improvements to /Devices. Frankly, /Devices is in much worse shape than Pistols. Pistols falls right in the middle of the blaster pack, with advantages and disadvantages. /Devices advantages are meaningful, but only in a very small subset of play. Some of the Pistols disadvantages you list, while meaningful, are really only meaningful in a very small subset of play. That is a difference to me and that is why I'll champion buffing /devices, but I am meh on Pistols improvements.
Um, /Devices is in worse shape than any power set out there especially since inventions came out in I9. I'm not sure that I would want to use that as a comparison with anything. I'm all for solutions to give more utilty to all the existing and under average power sets. /Devices, Psi/, Elec/, and DP all need some work and that's the order that I'd put them in for priority too. The current crop of devs though seems to think that gimicks is the way to go. I prefer thinking that is outside the box that gives more options rather than fewer.

But just posting to slam Pistols after you had already stated your preference? Nah, I have trouble getting it. Now, I understand power-hate, but Pistols is just not worthy of the level of venom you toss at it, especially when you do it uninvited.
It's not hate. I'm not angry. There is no nerdrage or /ragequit. When I post I have a reason and since this is the internet, and a public forum, if someone posts then clearly replies are invited. I dislike the animations therefore there is no shiney that blinds me to the gaps, inconsistancies, and lacks in the performance of the set. I always give a power set a complete try before I make a decision and my posts draw entirely on that experience. It's not simply an unsupported opinion.

I do not wish to give someone who has a question about the set's performance any false hope as far as performance goes. The times I jump in are when another poster is touting the animations of the set when performance was the question. If you want to sacrifice performance for animations that's fine by me. If what you are really after is performance, I'll be steering you in another direction. I have said many times that there is nothing DP does that another set does not do better with the exception of the sheer number of procs you can pack into it. I've shown numerically, to the best of my ability where I come from with that.

I've shown where the set is weak, where it needs improved, how it can be improved and I can't recall anyone disagreeing with those posts.

It is below my personal standards for a power set of it's type. For me personally it is ahead of the Elec primary and far ahead of the Psi primary but that doesn't really mean anything since they all fall below my personal performance threshold. That means that beyond the initial testing of that power set it gets 0 play time after that.

If I want, or my concept call for slows, Ice is better. If I want KB/KD Energy is better. If I want extra Damage Fire is better, if I'm serious about -damage I'm playing a defender. If I want animations that look cool to me I'm still not playing DP.

When DP was first announced I came up with several concepts for DP toons. When I got in Beta I realized that not a single one of my concepts would fit with the animations of DP.

The only concept that I have left is a -Damage performance build for a defender and honestly that's pretty far out in left field even for me. The idea of -damage from shooting stuff with bullets is right up there conceptwise with my TA toons healing someone by shooting them with an arrow. in any case that particular concept toon will remain on the drawing board gathering dust until we get some Malta or Wild West animations for DP.

Squeaky wheel gets the grease, if you don't file a complaint with customer service you'll never get satisfaction, if you are in an election and you don't campaign you'll not be holding public office, if you fail to point out ommisions no one will do anything to correct them, etc, etc, etc. yadda, yadda, yadda. The members of the market forum were continually on about merging the markets even after we were told by Posi market merger = d00m, won't happen. We got WW, and oh look, boom, instant market merger and no d00m. I will continue to post to remind the devs that DP needs work just like I continue to remind the devs that /devices needs work. (Edit - I notice that you never seem to have any issue when I point out the problems with /devices but you do when I point out the issues with DP. Why is that do you suppose?)

One final point before I move on. Yes 10% defense for 5 seconds is, in the grand scheme of things, spitting in the wind. No one that seriously builds for defense builds with it in mind because you'll only have it 5 seconds out of every 45ish seconds in the best of conditions. People building for the defense cap are going to build all the way to 45 and ignore this minor buff.

People that are popping purple inspirations are still going to pop 4 because they are still going to want to be over the magic 45% mark after the 5 seconds of animation end. If you are being honest with yourself and everyone else reading this post you know that the only real and reliable use for this buff in the world of sets and set bonuses is as a defense debuff pad during the alpha and even then it's not all that good because most defense debuffs last longer than 5 seconds.
