    Why?

Think of it as an Army of Superheroes, I mean a force where specific cities could have heroes on station, but at the call of Superiors. It makes for a flexible striking force. Ideally a SG led by one, with up to 4 Generals To lead up to three Captains who lead up to three Sergeants who run one 4 hero squad each.

    Just a thought.

PS. My youthful zeal is testimony that i never truly 'grew up'. I tried growing up, but all I could get was Government Work. Peter Pan has KW Stryker envy I am told. This game, this City of heroes, is so enjoyable to exercise, i love it. I spend up 6 hours daily on it (yes, I am retired) and still have time to pay bills, go shopping, enjoy my other hobbies and taking naps**

*A big Plus for us seniors. I truly thank one and all for the information and advice. Should i invest in the Big player's Guide for COH? I found it on EBAY for under $15.00. Is it worth the investment?

    That's all for now
    Take care everybody-

    Few more things (and welcome!)

Buying guides for pretty much any MMO - don't do it. I mean, the old Prima guide (non-binder-bound paperback) is good for giggles, you can read what things were like in beta (such as the never-implemented Faultline trial, or Gravity controllers having Fold Space,) but it's roughly as out of touch with the current game as the graffiti the workers put on some ancient Egyptian monuments when they were built. Even the newer one - "designed to be updated continually!" - isn't. Guides have pretty much been dropped.

For guides, come here, or wander to Paragon Wiki (NOT the Wikia version! If you see Wikia, you're in the wrong place.)

Supergroup membership/leadership doesn't cut you out of running teams. You're not limited to running teams with just your supergroup or anything - so feel free to completely ignore your supergroup (well, other than running in supegroup *mode* so you get prestige built up for when you DO want to build that base.)

Also... don't advertise yourself as a magic tanker. Nothing wrong with it, mind you, but your origin (magic/science/natural/tech/mutant) has just slightly more impact on the game than what color hat you're wearing, if any. Normally just saying you're a tanker is fine. If anyone's curious, add your level, primary and secondary powerset. (for instance, my forum-namesake comes in multiple versions. Depending on where I am, as a tanker, I'd say I'm a 50 Fire/Super strength (SS,) 50 Fire/Energy Melee, or 26 Dark Armor/SS tanker... then again, I could be playing a non-tanker version!)

Just trying to help you sort out what info people are going to want when getting a team together. Then again, if you start the team... *shrug*

Plus it would save my various settings.

Reason for the post was I was curious if the game versions were different enough between XP and Windows 7 that this might not work. Anyone know if this might be a problem?
Yeah, as mentioned - there's no different version of COH for win7. What you're planning should work just fine. You may want to check the guides section, though, for a guide from Bill Z Bubba about moving/reinstalling COH.... this one.

I tend to back up my COH directory anyway with new issues, etc. and went through a similar process - first with upgrading my old machine to win7, then building the new one. It's painless.

(Oh... yeah, agree 100% with both grabbing the 64 bit version, and with making sure you have the current drivers for everything, but especially the video card, ready before you do the upgrade.)
  3. So you can:
    Get to the login screen
    Log in
    Select a server/character

    Is the character selection slow?

Which server are you trying? I know I've had issues on occasion with east vs west coast (surprisingly, for someone in FL, west coast gives me fewer issues.) If you're not sure which is which:

    East:
    Freedoom
    Infinity
    Liberty
    Pinnacle
    Triumph
    Victory

    West:
    Champ
    Guardian
    Justice
    Protector
    Virtue

See if it happens to one on the other coast. (if you don't have a character there, see if you can just whip one up - hit random and go in, see if it loads.)
  4. And one you *keep ignoring* -

    Quote:
Again, can't respec origins. While *new* characters could decide on their drawbacks, etc. by picking an origin at creation, old ones (well over a million - I don't recall the exact number mentioned a few anniversaries ago on created characters) would be stuck. Using your original example, my mutant /regen scrapper would be getting penalized for being mutant if they wanted to use the extra damage - for an option they could have picked *years* ago. No, saying "don't pick one then" does not "keep classic players happy," as you're now telling them "don't use the system that just got added." It'd be like restricting the upcoming Incarnate system to newly made characters only.
*SIX YEARS* worth of already created characters. You want to tie these to one of the FEW things we can't change. ED? Changed slotting, later dealt with IOs. IOs? Easily retrofitted (or ignored.) Power changes? Change slotting or power changes with a respec. Tie something to origin? Stuck with a choice you could have made years ago and can't change.

Let me reiterate that last part so that maybe you get it.

You can't change origin in response. You would affect literally millions of characters for something they picked when it had no real affect, when it was a "flavor" option.

Do you get what the big issue you're not addressing is yet? And no, "Just ignore it then" is not addressing it.

    Your idea will:
    - Annoy casual players who will suddenly have some drawback someone else does.
    - Annoy RPers who are getting penalized.
    - Annoy those who like to min/max their builds for best efficiency for a choice they can't change.

    1. If they were just "all the same," why not just call them inherents instead of "origin-something?"

    2. Again, can't respec origins. No. Just no.
  6. Standard response to origin changes like this:

We've had origins doing nothing for six years. We can't change origins - I don't believe the character data is built in a way that would *allow* us to change it (origin being one of four character defining, unchangeable items, including AT, primary and secondary.) You would thus be denying people an option that, if this were in game from day one, would be an informed choice and part of character building. You'd essentially be punishing people for giving no attention to what's been, basically, a "throwaway" character piece, or for choosing an origin for RP as opposed to min/max reasons.

Besides, if that's "fair enough," then so's "I think it's perfectly fine as is."

The OP makes a comment that seems to imply his issue is with the animation ("Looks like you're flinging monkey poo") and says all the other origins have "cool" powers:

    Quote:
Throwing mutagen at people feels an awful lot like a monkey throwing feces. Could we not get a different early level attack temp power? Something cool, like all the other origins have?
    Animation for Mutagen:
You reach toward your hip, and throw a tiny something cross-body (left arm/right hip.)

Animation for one of the "cool" powers (Science - tranq dart) :
You reach toward your hip, and throw a tiny something cross-body (left arm/right hip.)

Animation for another "cool" power (Magic - Apprentice charm) :
You reach toward your hip, and throw a tiny something cross-body (left arm/right hip.)

Animation for another "cool" power (Tech - Taser dart) :
You reach toward your hip, and throw something cross-body (left arm/right hip,( having wires appear in midair a few inches from your hand.

So if the OP is talking about wanting a "cool" animation to match the other "cool" powers, he doesn't have a leg to stand on because he already has one.

  13. /disagree.

Scrapyarders, in general, are a pain (except to my Plant/Thorn.) The last thing I want to deal with is having to pass by on (say) a 40-ish MM and suddenly having a metric ton of TNT sticks thrown by demolitionists wipe me out. Passing that by *getting through the 20s* is a high point of my MMs.

The only things that needs to be done to scrapyard are:
    - Make him not run like crazy
    - redo his route so he doesn't suicide at the BM kill field.

Plus, not all zone events scale. The Rikti do, yes, as do the zombies. However, Troll raves don't, nor do the Hellions for SC fires. The difference? The troll raves and hellions are persistent events - just like the scrapyarders - thus giving people plenty of time to mess with them (or just say the heck with it and outlevel them.) They really are part of the zone. Holiday/Invasion mobs are not, thus you want to have more people able to fight them in the (generally) limited time they're available.
  14. Farming, I don't think so right offhand. As far as playing and soloing, mine's doing all right, though still kind of a lowbie. Someone else will have to tell you about the upper levels. (Ice/ does pretty well, not sure how /earth goes.)

    /this.

Though - and I haven't paid attention to the price of these things, tbh - what I had in mind were KB resist recipes. They start at... oh, 10 or 15, one of the two. So, get someone to that base level, AE to death and just keep rolling. Cheap random rolls? Who cares if I get 30 Fear recipes in that case? It's not as big a risk.

Intent - ok. Execution = abusable.
  17. Personally -

Well, I agree with Umbral, somewhat. If it benefits the game by doing so for one group, why not benefit the whole game by doing so for both? Not in the name of "fairness," just - oh, common sense, I suppose. Why not get everyone excited?

Of course, the flip side of this is that I've seen several posts by EU (English server) players that they've already used up all their slots. I can't help but wonder if the French and German servers are in worse shape in that regard - in which case, extra slots won't help. If the population won't support (financially, I don't mean players going "yes, please!") extra servers there - have we gotten official word about why or why not a server *list* merge (no more EU/NA) couldn't be done? I think that'd benefit the EU side more than slots. (Yes, even non-English. French and French-speaking Canadian, for instance, would have a few more people to play with. German... well... )

(I want to say we have, but heck if I can remember it.)

  19. I'll /third the "if you're coming from another MMO, you've got to get the 'need a healer' knocked out of your mindset" idea. I recently let Aion expire (waiting for 1.9, rather tired of the kinah chase, etc.) and frankly I started to *hate* playing my cleric there. Not only do the heals take way too damn long, but add heal aggro (I *hate* that - I can strip aggro from a gladiator by healing them) and the fact that, unless we're dealing with utter wimp enemies, if I do anything BUT heal or buff it seems that someone's going to be dead, or close to it, soon. (Don't get me started on having a camp of elites right outside Morheim's gates... when you're 13-20.) I'm *extremely* thankful COH isn't like that.

What bugs me most about the whole "healing" thing in here, though, is that people will concentrate on it - even on non-emps - and just not bother to learn how big of an impact the rest of their powers can have. I don't just mean the "pure emp, take no attacks, add medicine pool" types. I mean the Kinetics that do nothing but transfusion and, later, transferrence pretty much. Or the rad with nothing but mutation and the healing aura. Or the thermal that won't take the shields - or much of anything else, just the heals and rez.

There are times it's handy, yes. Early game, doing a sewer run? Sure. Keep that health up. Hami raid? Absolutely. But that's a tiny, tiny part of the game.

And, quite honestly, those that were "purged" the first time (35 and below) are still "purged" if people want to pick them up. They wouldn't have gotten relocked.

  21. /signed.

I've had times in the past where I've "inherited" a SG, for example, and had to get ahold of coalition mates - I don't care about how much prestige they have, etc, I just need to get ahold of the leader. Or otherwise needed to get in touch with whoever's running a SG. Right now, SG search is useless (and "top 100," really? I don't care how much prestige you have, that just makes you rich, not good.)

Really hoping a revamp is due.

  25. Of my 50s, only my MA/Regen Stalker (for story reasons) is going Heroic. Or at least mostly heroic. Probably completely - I've already re-rolled her elsewhere, though. I can't think of any others that would make the switch.

Adding non-50s (and not "I'll be making one of these in Praetoria to start with,) I've got a mid-20s PB who's got enough "do whatever it takes to get the job done - namely wiping out Nictus and their supporters" in her to go at least a little grey. The 50 version of her, though - nah. Lesson learned and all that.
