  1. Oh and one more thing. Posi definitely does want to be able to increase the allowable size of MA arcs but hasn't yet figured out a way to do so. The limiting factor is that even now there are people who complain about the amount of time it takes to load up the missions. I can understand why it takes a bit of time for some. After all, the custom enemy and ally data isn't on your system already like the standard enemy data is so low end systems are of course going to lag out.

Now that I've the basic information and being understanding part out of the way. Would those of you who experience inordinately long times in loading missions, or the market, or zones or whatever do me a favor? Quit complaining and get yourself a real computer so those of us who are capable of handling larger chunks of data can get the goodies? Or if you can't afford yourself a new computer then at least quit complaining about the difficulties you have due to your system. It isn't the highway department's fault that your second hand Yugo has a top speed of 40mph (64kph) and the speed limit shouldn't be lowered just so you can keep up with the other cars.

Sorry for the rant but I just hate it when I hear that the limiting factor in some area of the game is that some systems can't handle it. If the console world went with that marketing strategy then the ps3 would still be using cds and 32 bit graphics just so the original playstation owners could still play the games. I've upgraded my system twice since CoH was released just to keep the shiny bits at maximum shininess.
  2. The best news (in my opinion) came not from the panel but just from discussion with Matt and Joe. I'm not sure when it's going to happen (likely I16) but soon at any rate. We are going to get a missing glowie/hunt indicator. When the remaining amount of glowies or needed enemies is 10% then they will show up on the map.
  3. I'll be there Saturday. Won't stick around long enough for the meet and greet but will hit the booth and the panel.

Curse you Prof, you are right. That could be a fun arc. Spot the wolfman. Puff the Catgirl.
  5. You can however go upstairs to the entryway and it will work there.

I myself find that rather silly because the story authors of CoX have to deal with these conventions as well and dealt with it appropriately from what I heard, like that mission that's all Paragon Protectors at al three ranks.

Really, you shouldn't be surprised you get a bad mark for your sonnet because it's 10 lines long as opposed to 14. The authors can complain about feeling limited now, sure, but the fact remains they can still whatever they fancy, and the fact that the official authors of CoX had to deal with these 'limitations' for five years now.

Sonnets rock, and if you don't like their limitations, well, you can always read other poems.
The difference is that the devs aren't limited by file size like we are. If for instance you wanted to create a coalition of villains centered around the theme of let's say the four seasons. Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. If you actually go so far as to create custom minions, lieutenants, and bosses plus an AV for each of the seasons you will have created 16 custom characters. At this point so much of your file space will have been used up that your mission arc will basically be limited to two missions with limited story telling and the descriptions of your custom characters had better be one word descriptions.

So no, the people actually writing the missions for the company don't have the same restraints we do. And yes we could tell five arc missions filled with all the appropriate types if we only want to use standard mobs instead of creating new and interesting types.

Tell you what. Go run through "The Butterfly Effect" by @gadgetdon. This mission was once a dev's choice but has since been replaced in dev's choice by the second arc in that series "Return of the Lizard People". That's right, two arcs in the series of three written so far by @gadgetdon have been made devs choice and all three of the arcs are very popular stories.

When you are finished tell me this. Does the experience for the first two missions deserve to be cut because they only feature minions and lieutenants? Should the great contact dialogue be cut down to a terse "Ok, now go do this." because more characters will need to be created in order to bring the mission up to the required level? Should the powers available to the minions and lieutenants be doubled just so they are worth the same experience as a normal Hellion?

In other words should the mission be changed from a challenging but not overwhelming arc with great storytelling into either an overwhelming arc that will destroy most teams and feature almost no story telling? Or should it be left as is and have all rewards for it cut in half?

I say drop the requirement of having at least 18 powers in order to get full experience for the mobs. Then double the size allowed for an arc. At that point I'll be glad to rewrite my arc (which purely coincidentally is based on the theme of the four seasons) so it includes minions, lieutenants, and bosses. But under the current restrictions I'll just unpublish it and not bother writing any more. I want to make a fun mission and tell a unique story. Not create team killer missions or tell a story that's about as sophisticated as Dick and Jane.
  7. Check to make sure you aren't trying to use the NA client with a Euro account or the Euro client with a NA account. The way to tell the difference is that the North American game files are named cityofheroes.exe and cohupdater.exe. The Euro files are named cityofheroes.eu.exe and cohupdater.eu.exe.

Second Possibility. Make sure your password isn't over 13 characters long.
  8. She has been a trainer for a while now. The not training villains part is a bug that should be fixed in I16.
  9. Every single time I've had to petition for a GM I've gotten a response in less than five minutes.

Not likely. It is possible that she might be able to load into the hero tutorial zone because it's less graphically developed than the villain one. However as soon as she zones into Atlas or Galaxy the graphics requirements go way up so she would likely just crash again.

Like Master-Blade said. Have her post a COHHelper report and we will be able to tell if the problem is hardware.
  11. Yes it does require extra space for installing. And only having 5 gigs available is bad anyway. I would suggest a few possibilities.

First, clean up your hard drive. If you don't know how to do it then right click on the drive, select properties, and then select disk cleanup. There is a good chance this will free up at least a couple gigs.

Second, anything you want to keep but almost never use or look at, burn it to cd or dvd and remove it from your hard drive. When you have a couple terrabytes of space to play around with then keeping old stuff is no problem but when you are tight for space it's always better to makes seperate archive disks.

Third, get a new secondary hard drive. It's possible to pick up a good 250 gig drive for around $40.

If you can't do either of these there is a possible work around. If the game is still physically on your second drive then you can skip step 1 and go directly to 2.

Step 1: Install the game on your second hard drive.

Step 2: Copy the game files from the game folder on the second drive to the game folder on the first drive.

Step 3: Put a copy of the cohupdater.exe file on your desktop. Not a shortcut but the actual updater file.

Step 4: Run the updater file and when it asks where to install the game then point it at the directory you already copied the files to. At this point it should just verify all the files instead of actually needing to install them.

Think about it this way: Say there is a 1 in 10 chance of a recipe dropping. In normal PVP play, that would make it relatively uncommon and a decent drop rate. However, players could also line up and let a friend kill them repeatedly. Let's say in this circumstance, a player can kill an average of 10 characters per minute. That would mean 1 recipe per minute, roughly.

Our reward scheme is not as naive as what I outlined above, there are other checks to help prevent the Conga Line of Death style of farming, for instance. Still, there are major concerns regarding these becoming too prevalent.

Now, all that said, I'll ask the Rewards Team to take a look at the data and see if we are happy with the overall drop rate.
Floating rate. Make it based on the number of characters in the zone.

a 1 in 5 chance of a drop divided by the number of players. 1 player would of course have zero chance to get a recipe. 2 players it would be 1 in 10. 20 players would be 1 in 100. 100 players it would be 1 in 500. Etc...

Increases the drop rate for low population zones but doesn't lend itself to farming because of the rep timer.
  13. They need to do a "Death of Superman" type thing. Statesman and Recluse can die fighting each other. Then we get Statesboy, Statesgirl, Statesborg, Statesbot, and Shaq... I mean Steel... I mean State.

And Recluse can get retconned into an emo EMT who can transform back and forth between normal guy and spider guy.

It really depends on if it is a server problem or a route problem. If it's a server problem then yes they are going to fix it. If it's somewhere along the route then no they aren't going to fix it. You'll have to wait till whatever system is messing up the connection is fixed.
  15. Mandu

    yeahhh....

If you have a reskinning program such as windowblinds then you need to tell it not to reskin the City of Heroes files. It will cause just the problem you mention which is launching but not loading.

Second, playing through Steam causes problems with some systems. Steam and CoH aren't nearly as compatible as they should be. Launching the game on its own is a much more stable way to run it.

Not necessarily. On my account right now I have 70 months of Veteran Rewards Time and nobody is going to be seeing the 69 month award for around half a year.. That's because I buy a year at a time. The category Veteran Rewards Time counts all the time you have played, plus the time you've paid for but not yet played.

The category that counts is further down the page where it lists the award level and when it was (or will be) awarded. If the date shown for your 12 month award is in the past then yes, you have reached it. If it's not, then you haven't earned the award yet and you got it through the bug I mentioned.

    Some other random facts:
    * No , the toons that can not choose Sands of Mu have not taken Ghost-Slaying Axe instead
    * It seems my meele toons (scrapper/tanks/brutes) have no problems taking it
    * The toons that have problems are often controllers

I thought all my toons (and there are many of them) would get Sands of Mu once I got the 12 month badge?

Anyone else got this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?
Are you quite certain that you have actually reached the 12 month play time mark on your account? There is currently a bug that is awarding vet rewards early or expansion items and powers to people who haven't applied a code. The reason I ask is that it seems the bug awards the items on a character basis rather than an account wide basis. Check your NCSoft account data and see what day your 12 month award is scheduled for.

    Costume Pieces

The Halloween event allows you to get pieces of salvage based on cheap Halloween costumes- Lord Recluse Mask, Statesman Mask, Back Alley Brawler Gloves and Hamidon Costume. Once you get one of each, you can take them to either Annah (heroside, on the south side of the train station in Croatoa) or Granny Beldam (villainside, on a small island north of the entrance point into Nerva) to unlock an extra costume slot.
Incidentally the fastest way to get to Granny B is to take a supergroup teleporter to Nerva. It drops you off right next to her.
  19. Personally I think that the reason there is no EU beta is for three reasons.

First: Because of the time difference. All the work goes into the game during working hours at Paragon studios. That's west coast NA time. Until the last issues the closed beta was only operating during those work hours. It would get shut down during most of the day.

Second: Due to the EU server location being in ummmm EU? /bug reports don't immediately get to the main devs and programmers. It's a slightly different client so it's possible that the bug reports must be collected and then mailed to the NA side.

Third: When testing stick to one environment. It's the same reason they don't run multiple closed beta test servers simultaneously. Test in one location with one client and that way you can be certain you aren't getting bug reports from a different release version than the current one.

I'm pretty sure there are EU players in closed beta right now. The difference being that they have NA accounts.
  20. Ok, first. Turn off a couple of those extra programs running.

ACTool.exe (you aren't playing Asheron at the same time I assume)

Klient.exe and YahooMessenger.exe (you may want to chat but it's best to eliminate all extras until the problem is found)

Puptime.exe (don't need to check on remote servers right now)

Tcap.exe (I have no clue what this one does. Do you know or is it just something you tried once and don't use? Or for that matter something you use only occasionally?)

Robotaskbaricon.exe (helpful I suppose if you actually use IE but shut it off for now)

vmware-tray.exe (again, unless you need it to be running)

TrueImageMonitor.exe (program is set up to autoload but you don't actually need it unless you are making an image. In fact it's not needed at all unless you actually want to monitor and control the image process while it is going on.)

TimounterMonitor.exe (Again, not needed unless you are making or mounting an image)

CorelIOMonitor.exe (Keep it or turn it off, your choice. It's an annoying little program that must be installed and run for Corel Photoshop to run. It constantly monitors cd drives for disks "just in case" you want to get pictures off them. I don't see how this could be causing the problem but you never know.)

After you have shut off the above listed then try playing again. If you don't crash then you can add them back one at a time till you find the guilty program.

O16 - DPF: {4871A87A-BFDD-4106-8153-FFDE2BAC2967} (DLM Control) - http://dlm.tools.akamai.com/dlmanage...ex-2.2.4.8.cab (I would also just plain get rid of this. Akamai download manager has a history of vulnerabilities)

    True Colors

I would like to see a color change for armor. Currently none of the armor options can have true white as a color. When you select the brightest white you actually get an off white. Just apply a white chest symbol to the armored chest and you will see how drastic the difference is.

It's the same with all the other primary colors but white is where it stands out the most. If I want red white and blue armor I would like to have the option of not looking like I just walked through a dust storm.
  22. I'm not quite sure what you mean here because resolution is a game wide setting and does not vary between characters.

Do you mean your placement of windows in the screen like your enhancement and chat windows?

Or are you making the mistake of entering the game in safe mode each time which always sets the resolution to the lowest setting?
  23. Stop downloading. Don't worry, when you start again it will pick up where you left off.

Now right click the city of heroes shortcut on your desktop. Under target change the line to read as this.

    "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -port 13094

That may not be the directory it's currently in so you might not change it to the above exactly. the important point is after the quotation marks put a space and then -port 13094

This will almost always speed up the download considerably.

    Tearing problems

By any chance do you have Steam? On some systems it interfers with the Nvidia drivers causing framerate loss and video glitches and it will show up in CoHHelper by causing the drivers to appear corrupt.
  25. Yes arcs stay published even if the account has expired. Just remember though any time a new patch is released that breaks one of your arcs you will have to resubscribe in order to edit them.
