crashes when encountering large mobs

I have narrowed down the game crash to only when encountering a large spawn or ambush.
I have tried a lot of things to fix this:
New video driver
Old video driver
using the -renderthreads 1 command line option
Uninstalled my anti-virus
checked for malware
tried both Vista and Windows7 with the same crash
tested my memory with the Windows7 memory tester without error
uninstalled and re-installed COH

Here is my COH Helper and HijackThis log:

this also happens to me when i enter a mission with alot of npc's in combination with ambushes. usually in poorly created architect maps where there are so many npc's you can't even see them all.

Posted

I can *make* it crash with a constructed mission but I also get crashes in the AE building, in regular missions and once even just on the loading screen before I was even in the game.

Turn off Vertical Sync
Turn off Anisotropic Filtering
Turn Water Effects to Off or Low
Turn off Bloom
Turn off Depth of Field

Basically, you want to set your CCC and ingame settings to those in the first post of BillZBubba's ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations thread that is stickied here. Explanations for why those settings are problematic are in the post as well. Mostly, it is due to ATI's implementation of OpenGL support in the drivers.

Once you have things running smoothly, you can tweak up some of the settings one at a time, keeping in mind the items that will cause problems.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I made the changes you suggested and the rest of BillZBubba's instructions. The game is still crashing. What else can I do?

You might want to try turning off some of those programs running in the background. One of them may be interfering with CoH. The first thing that pops out to me is the VM software, I have no clue how CoH would react to a VM environment but I do know that CoH is sensitive to timing errors.

There is no VM running, it is just a tray notification applet.

Yes but only crashes one or the other client, never both at once. I also crash when single-boxing.

Ok, first. Turn off a couple of those extra programs running.

ACTool.exe (you aren't playing Asheron at the same time I assume)

Klient.exe and YahooMessenger.exe (you may want to chat but it's best to eliminate all extras until the problem is found)

Puptime.exe (don't need to check on remote servers right now)

Tcap.exe (I have no clue what this one does. Do you know or is it just something you tried once and don't use? Or for that matter something you use only occasionally?)

Robotaskbaricon.exe (helpful I suppose if you actually use IE but shut it off for now)

vmware-tray.exe (again, unless you need it to be running)

TrueImageMonitor.exe (program is set up to autoload but you don't actually need it unless you are making an image. In fact it's not needed at all unless you actually want to monitor and control the image process while it is going on.)

TimounterMonitor.exe (Again, not needed unless you are making or mounting an image)

CorelIOMonitor.exe (Keep it or turn it off, your choice. It's an annoying little program that must be installed and run for Corel Photoshop to run. It constantly monitors cd drives for disks "just in case" you want to get pictures off them. I don't see how this could be causing the problem but you never know.)

After you have shut off the above listed then try playing again. If you don't crash then you can add them back one at a time till you find the guilty program.

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!

I disabled all the programs listed and it is still crashing.

You said you did memory testing using Windows mem tester, and turned off a lot of your background processes. You might want to try a different mem tester also just to be sure.

Try monitoring your temps, I don't know if Speed Fan works with Windows 7 but you can give it a try.
