Quote:Well if a guy wants to have fun with the fembots they are going to have to make sure the impotence cures still work. But since the fembots could easily be programmed to like balding men I'd agree that line of research is probably not going to be necessary in the long run.No fembots yet? For shame Science, for shame... It's 2012 already! Get on the ball! Quit with the baldness and impotence cures and do some real SCIENCE! for once...

I think about 95% of these crash/lag problems people have with this game are based on the computer they are using to play it, not the game code or servers.
About four months ago I got myself a brand new, top-line computer to replace one that I had been using for around 4 years before. I had noticed with my old computer that over the years the game seemed to get more laggy and crash prone as time went on. At the end it got to the point where I was reliably crashing about every 1.5 or 2 hours of playing.
But as soon as I started using my new computer (again with its bleeding edge GPU, CPU, memory, etc.) I have not seen a crash or period of lagginess at all. Seriously - not one crash since I got my new computer in at least several hundred hours of play.
I think that just about every new Issue introduces a new set of memory leaks and/or graphics changes which puts just a little more strain on a given computer's ability to handle the game. If you're trying to play the game with an older/marginal computer to begin with then you're more likely to have problems than if you're playing on a top-end machine. Not sure there's really any "solution" to this other than keeping yourself ahead of the curve hardware-wise. -
Quote:Yep I'll agree it's a nice feature with a misleading name.Actually, that's a really nice feature, even if the name is a little confusing. I read "focus group" and immediately thought of a person with a clipboard asking what I liked and didn't like about the product I'd just seen (Steve was delicious, by the way). I kind of figured it might be a dev/GM tool that had shown up on my account by mistake, so I didn't mess with it.

Quote:Heck as a case in point there was a time (and perhaps they still want to believe this to some degree) when the Devs assumed that players would only use travel powers while traveling in "non-combat" situations. They fully expected and intended for people to always turn off their travel powers while in combat. This is why powers like Fly used to have -ACC penalties and large END costs because they seriously wanted to "encourage" people not to use them while fighting. Even now the main purpose of Travel Suppression today is their last ditch effort to try to make fighting with travel powers on just annoying enough to make us not want to do it.Devs need to check with players a bit more often about what our expectations are and not rely on what they "think" they might be because in doing so they are ALWAYS going to be wrong at some level.

This was a clear example of the Devs trying to shoehorn a play style over top of their players' general desires. *shrugs* -
Once AI becomes advanced enough that we seriously have to question whether or not it has become independently sentient then we'll have to come to grips with our own divinity as (big 'C') Creators. More important than whether or not we can call ourselves gods is how we'll relate to our new creations - will we harmoniously accept these creations as equals or will we desperately try to maintain some kind of mastery over them and keep them relegated to second class slave-like lifeforms?
Basically we'll eventually have to deal with a pivotal point in history when we'll be faced with a choice of having to accept them as equals or not. How we'll handle that will determine whether we have a happy future or one more like that portrayed in movies like The Terminator or I, Robot. -
Because it honestly would make more sense to be able to buy it than the way it currently "works" which is almost the very definition of insanity. There should be absolutely nothing awardable in a MMO that hinges on whether or not another human (in this case a Dev) arbitrarily wants to give it to you or not. Put it this way: what if we had to get permission from a human Dev to be able to level a character from level 49 to 50?
-
Quote:Heck I'd probably give them $10 or $20 bucks for it. As a business if Paragon Studios doesn't want me to throw free money at them for something dumb like that that's their problem, not mine. *shrugs*Bug Hunter doesn't induce reporting of exploits among anyone who likes to exploit exploits, and annoys badgers who like to see clear criteria for gaining a badge. They should make it buyable.
Eco
As silly as this idea sounds at least it would be more deterministic than a badge who's only criteria to earn is "a whim of a Dev".Quote:They should hide the badge somewhere random in the game, and keep moving the location every few days....
Alternatively as soon as 1 person finds the badge, it re-locates.

Quote:Actually comparing today's CoH to April 2004's CoH I'd say we're currently playing CoH version 1.98 now. The Devs have done a remarkable job pushing the limits of what this 10+ year old (counting pre-launch development time) game system can do. But I think to believe that this game can continue much past another few years without major overhauls is betting against reasonable reality. If you looked back to 2004 you'd realize that you're already playing CoH 2.0.
Eventually either someone will create an -actual- CoH 2.0 or this game will come to an end without a path forward. -
Quote:I thought everyone knew that if you had a complete collection of all these base salvages on your character that all the nerfs this game has ever imposed on you would suddenly be removed.Curious, what is the point of having these? I got a bunch of base salvage on old characters. I know it doesn't drop anymore.

The Paragonwiki entry for the Steampunk Pack sums most of it up. Paragonwiki usually has all the info about these things so I don't know why the authors of this particular wiki page didn't include the male costume items but there's plenty of those in the game too.
Hope that clears it up. -
Quote:That's cool. I didn't even bother to check the "coming soon" sections of my local theaters because I didn't think that it'd could go national in just a couple of days.Good news for you, Lothic:
TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY will be playing nationwide starting January 6, 2012.
Which means I get to go see it again.

Well for the record I never once said that I thought Kelley's vision of Wonder Woman was perfect or that I thought his show was a guaranteed success. I simply believed it deserved a chance to be on the air.
The problem with this Internet age we live in is that the fanbois were not only able to rip Kelley's pilot apart before the studio suits had a chance to decide on it but they reacted -so- negatively to it that I suspect the networks won't even bother to give anyone else a stab at the franchise for a very long time. Everyone's hatred of Kelley's show not only prevented him from having a chance but probably poisoned the entire idea of Wonder Woman for anyone else.
When faced with another decade or two of NO Wonder Woman at all I almost would have liked to have seen a few episodes of Kelley's questionable attempt at it. *sigh* -
It's not too often when you work at a job where you get to have fun with your bosses over something like this. I think it's cool David E. Kelley was able to rub their noses in it by having a cameo of his version of Wonder Woman on his other show.

I won't quibble here about who would have been a better actress to play Wonder Woman or whether the show was really going to suck or not. I'll just say that as good as Lynda Carter was the only way there will ever be another Wonder Woman show is if the fans give someone else a chance at the role. The only thing that really bothers me about the failure of Kelley's pilot is that the fanbois reacted -so- negatively to it that it'll likely be years before anyone risks trying it again, even if the next person who wants to try it has a really good vision for it.

Quote:I think if the way the news was released had been handled better by the lead dev at the time, there would have been less whining. With 20/20 hindsight I can certainly agree that the Devs could have handled the situation better at the time.Quote:The big issue was trusting people who signed an NDA to be mature. Well, that and Jack's disconnect from common sense from the players side (I understand what and how he said what he said, but ouch none the less)
ED was a bitter pill to swallow regardless. Even though I can now accept that it was ultimately good for the game in terms of overall balance it wasn't really sold that way to the playerbase. Perhaps if the Devs had better explained what they were trying to accomplish the transition would not have been so traumatic. Lessons learned and water under the bridge I suppose... -
Quote:I don't know too much about Thor, the comic book character, but one would think that he ought to be speaking some kind of "ancient Norse/Germanic" dialect. Even if he knew modern English he'd likely speak it with a heavy accent the way a non-native speaker would. I suppose the comic book just glossed over that detail the same way Star Trek pretty let every alien automatically speak perfect English. It does sound weird, but Thor sounds about right speaking German to me for some reason.

Quote:I replied to the suggestion in just about the only way that was useful. *shrugs*Now, show me where I said "this has to be in now/soon." For someone insisting we have to "keep things in perspective," you seem to miss me saying PVP itself needs fixing first, which is not a small job and would take time on its own.
All I'm pointing out is one of the styles they have, and that COH could take some cues from it for a different experience. Period. No timeframe suggested. (The only thing even close to it is mentioning we have the LFG queue in game now, which could be used if this were ever considered.)
So, instead of stomping all over anyone's "hopes to get anything implemented" (which aren't mentioned to begin with,) how about replying to the suggestion itself?
My point (which I now realize you probably didn't pick up on presuming from your forum join date that you are relatively new to the game) was that people have been suggesting various ideas like yours to improve PVP in this game for years. Many years. Long before the specific game you're referring to was even a glint in its Lead Devs' eye from a galaxy far, far away.
I realize that you did not demand that you wanted X, Y or Z by such-in-such date. But the very nature of your hopeful suggestions implied that you might be happy even if it took what seemed like a "reasonable" amount of time to create. Problem is things basically have not fundamentally improved with this game's PvP for years. The overall concept of PvP in this game has become a very low priority sideline and probably will always be from now on.
When CoV was first introduced as a "standalone expansion" back in October 2005 one of the main concepts behind it was the SG base raiding PVP system. It was clearly going to be the cornerstone of the original "end-game" vision long before the Incarnate system even existed. Unfortunately the feature never really worked - too much server lag made the whole thing a craptastic disaster. It literally only managed to stay in the live build of the game for a few weeks in total before it was permanently pulled back out. In fact I think it'd be easy to nominate the failure of the SG base raiding system as the single most embarrassing and costly development misstep this game has ever suffered through.
Since then the support for the entire PvP system in this game has faltered and been effectively deprioritized by the Devs. The Arena system (and the related Gladiator feature) quickly faded away unused by a majority of the playerbase. Even the population of the open zone PVPers (in Bloody Bay, Sirens Call and Recluse Victory) has diminished to a handful of diehards.
As I said before I'm not against PVP improvements for this game. I simply counter-suggested not get your hopes up about this. This game has been leaning strongly towards the PvE side of things for years and if the Devs aren't willing to "fix" even the basic PvP problems (as you put it) how likely do you think it would be for them to want to try another ambitious stab at new PvP features (along the lines of your suggestions) after the humiliating and costly failure of SG base raiding system?
Let's just say I don't really need to "stomp" all over your suggestion - it appears the Devs have already beat me to it. -
Basically there's no way to get around the fact that this game is based on a game engine/system that's now pushing 10+ years old. Remember much of what we see here was established during the first years it took to initially develop this game before it officially launched.
I'll be the first to priase the efforts of our Devs for all the hard work they've done over the years to push the limits of what this game can do graphically. But sooner or later we'll have to accept that this game will never be able to last forever in its current form. At some point the amount of updating it'll require to stay competitive with newer games will become so massive that really the only reasonable alternative will be starting over with something like a CoH 2.0.
The complaint that "our humans are ugly" is starting to approach that tipping point where as Aura_Familia said the only way to adequately "solve" that problem will be to wait for the next game to be made. -
I'm not against the idea of getting PvP improvements in this game but let's keep things in perspective. It's obvious there's some differences between a game that implemented PvP roughly 6 years ago versus a game that launched its version of PvP only 2 weeks ago. Sure it might make sense for this game to "learn some lessons" from other newer games, assuming those lessons prove to be worthwhile. But please don't get your hopes up that anything is going to change here anytime soon.
The Devs of this game already have the content of the next 2 or 3 Issues established in the pipeline at any given time. Even if they woke up tomorrow and decided to completely copy everything that other game is doing for PvP it'd probably still be at the very least 6 months or a year before we were able to play with any of it. *shrugs* -
Quote:I loved Robinson's portrayal of Elim Garak in DS9. In many ways he made that series worthwhile to watch all by himself. But I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for stories like this one the folks who worked on DS9 wouldn't have had a good model to follow when they created Garak in the first place.I see that set of descriptions in a job title, and the one and only thing I can think of is "Elim Garak". With all due respect to Mr. Gary Oldman (for whom I have an immense amount of respect), he is not Andrew Robinson.

As an actor Oldman has a pretty amazing ability to span a wide range of "types" of characters. I have little doubt that he'll pull off this role quite acceptably. Unfortunately since the closest theater to me playing this right now is an 8 hour drive to another state I'm probably going to have to wait a bit before I get to see it myself. You'd think there'd be a least one theater in all of Florida that would be cool enough to a rate a movie like this.Quote:I'll certainly see it since it's one of my most favorite spy novels, although Gary Oldman, an actor I normally like, is gratingly cast against type. The least he could have done is pull a DeNiro-esque weight gain for the role instead of wearing a modest fat suit. As it is, I'm worried he'll overdo the sepulchral side of Alec Guinness's performance and neglect the fussy, comic side of Smiley's character.
If we're playing Want, Settle, Get for casting Smiley, I would have chosen Albert Finney, Michael Gambon, and Bernard Cribbins. Oh well.

Yeah but at least if the Daleks were invading Germany it'd be reasonable to expect that they would switch to speaking German. The idea of Captain America speaking German is about as weird as Joe McCarthy speaking Russian.

For those interested in using keybinds/macros I think the actual name of this power was changed during beta from "Magic Carpet" to "Flying Carpet". I guess they were worried that using the word "magic" might have implied that it was only for magic origin players or some-such. I suspect they'll probably still keep using the phrase Magic Carpet in the market just to confuse the issue.
-
Eh, I played this game for several years before it even had a market. Sure I've made many billions of profit from it and sure it could be improved upon, but it's hardly what I would call my main motivation for continuing to play this game.

Way back when they nerfed Fire Imp levels from from +0 to -1 they made it completely public. I would be very surprised to hear that they intended to do the same thing to Lore pets as a stealth nerf. If anything this is almost certainly a bug and/or unintended.
But then again because there was such an outcry over the Imp nerf maybe they decided to try (and perhaps fairly successfully managed) to sneak this one past us. *shrugs* -
Quote:All I know is that even if their ToHit buffs are allowing them to supposedly "cheat and grief" then I must be getting old because I never really noticed it. I've thrown several different AT/powersets at them with characters of various levels and I still killed them pretty much as fast as anything else. *shrugs*Basically, the Awakened Conduits have a Click Power that amounts to "YOUR PRIMARY/SECONDARY IS *INVALID* AND WORTHLESS" to all Defense based protection schemes because ... well ... just because ...

If a player were doing this, it would be considered both Cheating *AND* Griefing. I mean, it's not as if Defense (alone) isn't the flimsiest protection scheme possible out of the alternatives or anythin- oh wait ... it is.
This thread sounds once again like the classic "My Scrapper is suddenly facing one of the very few things I can't kill in 0.002 seconds" syndrome. It's funny how players who are used to instantly mowing down 99.9% of their opponents get when they stumble over something that actually challenges them.
