Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - Who else is gonna see it?

I read this ages ago - then my hubby and roommate came home from seeing something or another and said, "Did you know they're making a movie of it?"

Then I took a look at the cast list and said, "Oh, HELLS, yes."

I am so there next week... and I think it'd make an absolutely fantastic COH story arc/TF/VF.

Anyone else going?

I've never heard of it. Which means that if I do see it, it'll probably be later on TV or Netflix.

I'm really jazzed about this film--it's just filled with brilliant actors. Sadly, it's gotten a limited release and isn't playing anywhere near me. Hopefully, it'll get a wider release soon.

I take it this means the movies just getting an overseas release?

I enjoyed it greatly. I am also old enough to remember the TV series with Alec Guinness. Didn't always understand what was going on but they sure were moody The film captures the same cold war feeling and Gary Oldman makes a great Smiley.

Don't expect any car chases

I see that set of descriptions in a job title, and the one and only thing I can think of is "Elim Garak". With all due respect to Mr. Gary Oldman (for whom I have an immense amount of respect), he is not Andrew Robinson.

Not sure if it's going to get a wider US release after Dec 23rd. I hope so.

If it does well, I'd love to see them do the rest of the Quest for Karla trilogy (Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley's People). ESPECIALLY if they can get Patrick Stewart to reprise Karla!

I would probably see it, since I like the whole Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Cold War spies genre; but, tbh, isn't it too dated to appeal to the general movie-going public?

(btw, is it set in the seventies, like it should be; or has it been updated like The Manchurian Candidate was?)

looks like it's something that's ultra limited just so it can qualify for Academy Awards

True - he would also make an excellent Smiley.

It's set in the 70s.

I'll certainly see it since it's one of my most favorite spy novels, although Gary Oldman, an actor I normally like, is gratingly cast against type. The least he could have done is pull a DeNiro-esque weight gain for the role instead of wearing a modest fat suit. As it is, I'm worried he'll overdo the sepulchral side of Alec Guinness's performance and neglect the fussy, comic side of Smiley's character.

If we're playing Want, Settle, Get for casting Smiley, I would have chosen Albert Finney, Michael Gambon, and Bernard Cribbins. Oh well.

Finally saw this on Saturday. Absolutely brilliant. A very subtle film, but it works.

(When we first got to the theatre about 20 min early, it was virtually empty. By the time the previews started, it was PACKED. And this for a 1pm show on a Saturday in downtown Bellevue.)

I loved Robinson's portrayal of Elim Garak in DS9. In many ways he made that series worthwhile to watch all by himself. But I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for stories like this one the folks who worked on DS9 wouldn't have had a good model to follow when they created Garak in the first place.

As an actor Oldman has a pretty amazing ability to span a wide range of "types" of characters. I have little doubt that he'll pull off this role quite acceptably. Unfortunately since the closest theater to me playing this right now is an 8 hour drive to another state I'm probably going to have to wait a bit before I get to see it myself. You'd think there'd be a least one theater in all of Florida that would be cool enough to a rate a movie like this.

Sadly my rule of thumb for seeing a movie in the theater is it has to have the kind of action that works best if seen on a big screen. Saw M:I-GP last week and the various stunts qualify. TTSS while my kind of movie, spy thriller, it doesn't strike me as something I would regret not seeing on the big screen so DVD for me.

That's cool. I didn't even bother to check the "coming soon" sections of my local theaters because I didn't think that it'd could go national in just a couple of days.
