  1. Mostly for AoE defense as I changed up the slotting on Tough to get over the hump on Ranged Defense. I figured you liked the bonuses slotted into the Shields as is. If that's not a big deal it would be a bit easier to hit the soft cap using some set bonuses in those powers.

    Either way what I did up real quick requires Hover and CJ to be running.

    Also mixing up Shield Charge could get you better defense numbers but would be detrimental to the Frankenslotting. Hard to know where to compromise when it's not my build.

    I tend to shoot for "cheaper" sets, and other bonuses that "good enough" but that isn't optimal for everyone. my DM/SD scrapper has only now come into it's own at level 40 with 40%ish melee Def and 37%ish AoE and Ranged Def. my attack chain is long but the endurance is more than manageable.

    Edit* I was trying to quickly get up to the soft cap without CJ but kept coming up short so I just caved and added it at 49.

  3. It's not really difficult to soft cap without pools, it's really more restrictive of choice of sets used. It's a trade off of more options for power picks but less options for slotting.

    It easier to soft cap only excluding Fighting than to soft cap and have pool A, B, C, and D.

    My build on live has Leadership (Assault &amp; Tactics not Maneuvers), CJ, Fitness, and Flight. The 2.5% Def to all from Gaussian's in Tactics is need in my build for all 3 positions. Slotting Zephyr's into CJ and Fly also helped.

    Avoiding Leadership all together would be a bit trickier, especially if you didn't take Focused Accuracy. I worked up a build that was soft capped to all but Melee. You would either need to slot Follow Up for Melee Def or take an APP power that had a power that could be slotted for Melee Def.

    Made a bit harder by the fact that I like the Achilles Heel Proc in Slash and Mako's or ToD seems less than optimal for Follow Up.

    So a build that does slot Follow Up for Melee Def but has some open powers and slots plus a few travel powers slotted with Zephyr's.

  4. My Claws/SR is softcapped without Fighting or Maneuvers, but I did slot tactics with Gaussin's. With Zephyr sets it shouldn't be very difficult.
  5. On most teams in most situations a tanker isn't needed. At that point a melee toon that doesn't die is plenty good. Now if it is required that a damage sponge sit in the spawn and HOLD agro then a scrapper probably won't cut it.

    Plenty of other Scrapper Secondaries are very sturdy on their own and file the role of alpha taker.

    Love my tankers, as well as all my 50's, but I know in 99% of the game you can replace X with Y and be just as successful.
  6. One thing to consider is Air Sup with it's knockdown can add to damage mitigation. That might be enough to not need Elude for the situations that your defense can be compromised. As far as AE content goes, if the mission isn't simply packed with mobs with Build Up inps can get you by. Most PvE content doesn't benefit from Elude after reaching the soft cap.

    Oh and since you are level 40 you can get a temp travel power in the Shadow Shard.
  7. I never picked up a Mace power on my Huntsman and I enjoyed my build all the way to 50. Double Assault and double Maneuvers helped to soft cap Ranged and AoE defenses. Add in an AoE immob power and you can be very survivable. Never met a team I didn't like or that didn't like me.

    Could you make a build that can do more? Sure but you can also make a build that does less. if nothing else try planning out a build in Mids and see how things would go.

    Build me a DM/SD

    Looking at your build as is, it seems that Ranged Def is only 43.6% currently unless I'm missing something.

    I am having a similar issue with my build, I had a, lets call it a cheap build, with Air Superiority and Fly, plus CJ, Fitness, and Fighting. Once I hit the late 30's I found myself wishing my attack chain was a bit tighter. About the only thing I've come up with is dropping Air Sup and Fly for SJ and Hasten. After that the only real differences I see between our power selections is I plan on taking OwtS instead of CP.

    One thing you could consider, if concept is really important doing a SD/DM tanker will net higher defense values giving more freedom in reaching the soft cap. That might make it easier to take teleport.
  9. Using just the powers you had I made some slotting changes. Quick changes as I left Quickness and Sprint and Swift 3 slotted (I'd say just 2 slot each with level 50s). I have ALL the Claws attacks on my SR right now, mostly because I "notice" when I don't have the "best" attack for a given situation. Sure Focus - follow Up - Slash is Awesome if you can afford to run it, and it's not bad with Strike or Swipe as a filler, but all the AoE's are worth while too. As i dropped Weave and Tough from my buidl I added Strike and Evis mostly as set holders but I do use the attacks. There is nothing wrong with taking them all if you are not trying to "completely optimize" your build. But, after you settle on a build I would try to "maximize it" as much as possible. As others have said you can get better stats out of a few more slots and different IO set choices.

  11. My build isn't built around extreme recharge and I specifically avoided the Fighting pool. I probably have 1 more single target attack than I really need but I do have a solid attack chain when exemplared. This is a bit of a change from my actual built, I don't have Elude or CP and I do have Fly, but this is closer to what you have. Note that I'm getting close to the same amount of defense from Tactics as you get from Maneuvers. My build sacrifices other set bonuses for defense boosts, in order to pick more powers (i.e. not taking Fitness Pool). What works for me isn't for everyone but this might give you a few ideas. Wasn't even a very pricey build.

  12. Typically the way to make SR a power house is to reach the Defense soft cap of 45% to all positions. After that, to use an optimized attack chain can mean aiming for some recharge bonuses, and after that plus regen is always good to have. I'd never turn down plus damage but surviving is usually the major concern.
  13. Well what is a TON of inf to you?

    My DM/SD build cost me close to 100 Million inf and I used Merits to buy the Numina. But I am softcapped. I can't run the uber attack chain MG-Smite-SL-Smite-Repeat but I'm not trying to solo AV's or Pylons. I am soft capped and have plenty of attacks. What I have here at work is a bit out dated and I am working up a second build that will be stronger and pricier but for a while I plan to be pretty close to this build.

    I'm sure I could have gotten by cheaper but when I got into buying mode I acquired everything I was looking for at once. I'm level 33 now and have close to 200 merits banked on the DM/SD so I'm getting my money back. I used another alt to shop with.

    Either way, this has done me well on TFs, teaming, and soloing so far.

  14. Well I rolled a Plant/TA and did enjoy it, TA does come into it's own often late for controllers. And I've done the Storm Defender thing; having done both now deep down in my heart I wish my Plant troller was a Plant/Storm.
  15. Also many AE bosses are going to be considerably tougher than standard PvE bosses. They have greater access to to hit bonuses and also -defense powers. But that just means it's a bigger challenge.

    huntsman?

    When I looked at the powers I'd take for a Huntsman I kind of though of it as a Blaster with melee powers in the primary instead of the secondary and team bonuses in the secondary. I did go Bane just to grab the better armor, cloaking device, and surveillance. I have a blast running around with capped ranges and aoe defense while having an aoe immob power, that lets me do some very silly things on teams. I will say my single target attack chain could use another attack, but using the debuffs rounds it out fine for me.
  17. I run Assault and Tactics on my soft capped Claws/SR plus my regular toggles and CJ. The IO sets give me more of an endurance reduction than my SO build did so even with two extra toggles I last longer. It's only in drawn out fights I need to pop blues, most PvE content I toggle up and go.

    Your attacks will drain more endurance than your toggles, more endurance reduction there will go far in your over all endurance issues. But If you can afford it there are uniques out their that help off set the issue even more.
  18. OwtS was my level 49 pick on my SD/mace tanker and will also be my level 49 pick on my DM/SD scrapper. If leveling is a pain I may take it sooner and then respec into it at 49.

    Claws/?

    Well I can say I understand the draw of fire and forget secondaries to pair up with Claws. I will always lean towards SR for Claws until something similar to Shields or Shields itself can work with Claws. The thing you will need for fire and forget with SR is to Auto PB and stop attacking long enough for it to fire off when it recharges. SR can be a tough road early, but gearing up towards the soft cap is relatively easy.

    But I can see where WP would fit better, you don't have any true synergy with Claws but also nothing major as far as disadvantages. The one thing that comes to mind is the knockback with Shockwave reducing RttC's effectiveness, but that can also be managed. Tough and Weave make WP really impressive, and you have the end to run them with QR.
  20. This is What my Hunstman runs around with. After using merits for some of the pricier pieces it was a fairly cheap build. Soft capped to ranged and AoE without cloaking device so that gives me a bit of cushion for defense debuffs. And if you stay out of melee you won't miss being soft capped there. I find I constantly move to get into a better position for AoEs so that helps as well.

  21. I'm not certain about the lore for CoH, but aren't the heroes already registered? If not then I'd be all for keeping a secret identity and doing whatever necessary to maintain it. Some back stories would undoubtedly include the hero/villian not having a secret identity; at that point the morals of the character would determine their side. I would say most villains would register, as more having been arrested multiple times wouldn't have much of a secret identity left; not like they couldn't go bad later anyways.
  22. AV's resist debuffs so stacking them will work nicely. Also as far as soloing The Clockwork King, you get the temp power to use on him so he should be fairly easy.
  23. Expect a learning process.

    You'll figure out how much control/debuff is required at any given time. Because your debuffs are clicks not toggles they may not recharge in time for evry spawn, in fact several of them will not. Oil Slick Arrow and EMP Arrow have long enough timers that they will at best be used every other spawn. To me that's not such a bad thing. For one, since you are not using toggles, the debuffs don't go away if the anchor dies. Plus half the fun of pointy sticks is inflicting pain. If you take a lot of time at the beginning of a battle to debuff, you will not be attacking much. You'll have to figure out your own balancing act.

    I like that I do not do the exact same thing for every single spawn, but then some powers are more fun than others.

    Claws/SR Build

    This is 33%ish defense by level 36 to all positions. Assuming just SO slotting, so there are a lot of slots to go around as the SR powers don't take a lot of regular enhancements. Take Slash, Focus, Follow Up and one of the first 2 attacks (I like Swipe's animation myself) and you have a single target attack chain by 18. I'd take 2 AoE attacks by 32 for PvE, any two really. Consider Weave, very useful to soft cap with, but if you plan to respec into IO sets you can take then. For general play I don't use Aid Self but you could work that in. With temp powers from safeguard missions I'd push the travel back a bit.

    At 33% defense, one small luck will get you to the soft cap if you are fighting a tough battle, so this will do most PvE with ease, good defense debuffs can hurt though.
