Softcapping /SR without Pools?

Was just emailing a buddy about toons we are rolling for double XP. I was leaning toward a Claws/SR toon (or maybe DM/SR).

Futzing around with Mids, I was trying to see if you could softcap SR with just bonuses from IO sets and without dipping into pools (like weave, manuevers etc.). Closest I could come was around 42% melee/ranged/aoe.

Is it possible to hit the softcap with just IO sets? Or would you need at least 1 from the pool sets?

If there is a sample build somewhere or you have one, thanks!

I'm just wondering why you can't take the Fighting, Leaping or Leadership pools.
What do you plan on taking instead of those?

I had the leaping pool, fitness and medicine pool in there. Just curious if it is a necessity to hit the soft cap with the "usual pools" (ie. weave, manuevers) or you can do it just from IO bonuses?

Here you go. I went a little overboard... 47.8 melee, 50.9 ranged, 46.9 AoE but I did this quick. You could probably 4-slot your first 2 toggles mixing R.Fortune and Gift of the Ancients and use the remaining 4 slots for something else like Laser beam eyes or conserve power.

The reason why the Fighting pool is generally considered requisite for softcapping is because Tough is the only pool power that will accept the Steadfast and Gladiator's 3% +def IOs and Weave is the most powerful +def pool power. That's 11.85% +def(all) that you're knowingly abandoning by not taking those pools, not to mention the rather significant benefits that taking Tough can have for an */SR.

My Claws/SR is softcapped without Fighting or Maneuvers, but I did slot tactics with Gaussin's. With Zephyr sets it shouldn't be very difficult.

But Not needed... I am at about 50% all positions without tough or weave. And on my /sr I never have taken and dont miss even not having tough or weave...


I do wish I had my build in mids to post but the one I am running is totally different then what I did for mids

Definately doable without, fighting and leadership. Thats generally how I build mine. I just cant afford the end drain those powers have so I use the travel sets instead.

I kinda did. Red fortune in my toggles Plus the Guassian's Set in Focus Chi gave me +10% to Ranged def. Coupled with Ed capped toggles, and 3 slotted autos, Ranged def did indeed hit the soft cap.

Then when we got some new IO sets:
Obliteration for +3.75% to Melee
Blessing of the Zephyr, +3.13% to Range &amp; AoE twice

However, to really hit it, Scirroco's Dervish in your AoE attacks and Touch of Death in Melee will get you higher AoE and Melee def than my build did

To use the Steadfast Protection Res/Def you really need to get Tough, although that does require investing in pools. (Originally I only used Tough as a Steadfast placeholder, never turned it on)

Bah I do not miss the tough/weave on my fire/shield either but I was going for damage my +40% damage buff for 1 target makes up for what I lost from tough yes I am softcapped

Shield is a bit easier to drop the Fighting pool with since it's got +res powers to take the 3% +Def IOs so you're not losing nearly as much possible +def. */SR doesn't *get* to slot resistance in any of its powers.

I do not like taking the fighting pool on any AT. They take too much end and, alone, they are worthless. If you can soft cap without it, that's 3 powers open to allow you take some fun powers. I do see how tough can help with "luck shot". But that's what aid self is for.

Not to mention the number of slots your regain or could reorganize to greater benefitd by taking them

I got my kanata/sr to soft cap but I had to go maneuvers to get there to get the build to do what i really wanted it to do

It's not really difficult to soft cap without pools, it's really more restrictive of choice of sets used. It's a trade off of more options for power picks but less options for slotting.

It easier to soft cap only excluding Fighting than to soft cap and have pool A, B, C, and D.

My build on live has Leadership (Assault &amp; Tactics not Maneuvers), CJ, Fitness, and Flight. The 2.5% Def to all from Gaussian's in Tactics is need in my build for all 3 positions. Slotting Zephyr's into CJ and Fly also helped.

Avoiding Leadership all together would be a bit trickier, especially if you didn't take Focused Accuracy. I worked up a build that was soft capped to all but Melee. You would either need to slot Follow Up for Melee Def or take an APP power that had a power that could be slotted for Melee Def.

Made a bit harder by the fact that I like the Achilles Heel Proc in Slash and Mako's or ToD seems less than optimal for Follow Up.

So a build that does slot Follow Up for Melee Def but has some open powers and slots plus a few travel powers slotted with Zephyr's.
