We attacked Primal Duray first. He teleported ONCE, maybe 45 seconds into the fight. Shortly after that, we held him. He did not teleport again and we got zero air strikes. So.... a cakewalk.

That's fine. Leave it to me to decline to join your league due to the leader apparently being either indecisive, deceptive or just incompetent.

If someone doesn't announce what trial they will be doing, I ALWAYS ask. If I get a BS response, I don't join.

Yeah, but there sure were morons on both sides in that exchange. If I'd been seeing that chat, I'd have gotten some popcorn and enjoyed the show.

We care. Some people objected to the selling itself. Some objected to the sanctimony of the 'community service' claim. Up until his last post, it was all pretty much supposition and opinion based on limited information. With his last post, by his own words, his character has now been established.

You can avoid it by going with a keyboard specifically designed for gaming or by trial and error (which I did, since basic keyboards are cheap).

I think the linked keyboard is the same model I'm currently typing on. It's dirt cheap but has very nice action. I used it with my previous build and am still using it. I like it so much, I have a spare sitting in the closet for when this one wears out.

You don't 'need' it. I WANTED it. The difference is noticeable. Since it eliminates seek time, it's most noticeable when loading many small files vs a handful of large ones. It makes a huge difference starting up Windows or loading Photoshop. Playing CoH, not so much. And when I say, "not so much", I THINK it's faster, but the difference is small enough it might just be perception.

Not sure on Mother Board.. Asus or Intel I guess.
I had Intel in my last build, Asus in my current one. Intel mobos can be pricey.

500MB hard drive. I dont need 1TB.. Id rather have a smaller faster HD
The larger HD isn't going to be slower. They all run at 7200 RPM.

Need good fans.. 120mm and quiet
Buy a quality case so it has good fans already, rather than having to replace the existing fans in a cheap case.

No Liquid cooling.. dont trust it.. just the thought of liquid around electronics scares the crap outta me.
Also, it's significant extra work and cost. Unless you go with a permanently sealed system. Corsair makes a whole array of them. I've never even considered them so I can't offer an opinion.

Need a good but not necessarily great Sound card..
You know, on-board sound USED TO suck like a tornado, but it's gotten pretty good in the past few years. What I normally do is build the system without a sound card and see how the mobo sound is. Two builds ago (Intel mobo), the audio picked up interference from other components and getting a discrete sound card fixed that. On my current system, I am using the audio on the Asus mobo and am very happy with it.

  9. Actually, you don't need to cancel first. Just go to your account management page and click the banner for the holiday offer. I bought the 12+2 on my main account and 6+1 on my second account. No problems.

Note: The offer is only available through Dec 31.

Usually true, but some big PSU names make cases also. I got a really good deal on my Antec 900 case with an Antec 650 watt PSU installed. A lucky break, since I was absolutely dead set on an Antec power supply and I happened to like the looks and features of the case.

You'll also want a good CPU heat sink/fan, I've had good luck with Zalman
Coincidentally, my current system has a Zalman cooler. I've heard that the most recent stock coolers from Intel are the first ones that aren't basically junk. Having said that, if you plan to stress the system AT ALL, you want a better cooler. A more efficient cooler will also help keep the noise down as the fan (or fans) won't have to work so hard. I have this cooler. It's 6" tall and weighs 1.6 lbs. If you go with a big cooler, be aware of the width of the case to be sure it can accommodate something that tall. I run 8 instances of SETI@home 24/7 so my CPU is running at 100% capacity all day, every day.

You can get a big name 64GB SSD for $110-120. I have a 128GB Crucial SSD and loading big apps (Windows, Photoshop) flies. If you go with a regular HD, I'd second that particular drive. I have an earlier version from that same line.

And I can ramble all day about computer hardware. We need most posters so I have more to comment about.

It is no more or less acceptable than selling something on the market. But to characterize it as a community service is pathetic.

During the last such loyalty program (for the Vanguard stuff), you would have been fine. Official word was that as long as the account was active for any part of a day, it counted as not lapsed.

I haven't seen any word on the current program. Hopefully it will work the same way.

It sounds like you were on a team, so this wouldn't matter. Your TEAM needs to inflict at least 10% of the damage to kill him. Of course, if you're solo, you're a team of one.
  16. I know some of the usual places like Tiger Direct and New Egg but any other places I should look for parts.
Not in my book. I've built my past 3 systems and buy everything from NewEgg.

Im figuring to spend around 1000-1200 and I can build it slowly as I dont have all the money right now.. Ive never put a PC together from scratch but i have replaced Ram. hard Drives, Video cards etc etc.. and I think i am pretty bright.
Having done all those things, the only aspect that would be even slightly challenging is applying thermal compound to the CPU and mounting the heat sink. There are plenty of tutorials for this on the web on tech sites and youtube. Personally, I'm a fan of Arctic Silver and went by the guides on their site www.arcticsilver.com

Also, I would suggest DON'T build it slowly. The technology is improving constantly and better components come out all the time. You gain nothing by building it gradually. Save your money and then buy everything at once.

I have no idea what kind of case to get.
Pick a good name brand. My current case is from Antec, the previous was from Thermaltake. First, figure out how big a video card you'll be getting and if you must have certain connectors in specific places. Do you need 8 USB connectors? Do you need Firewire on the front panel? On the top? Do you need four external drive bays?

I have no idea how much power supply I should get
The other components will determine that. AFTER you select all your other parts and review the power requirements of the video card, go to a site like this one and tell it everything you're installing. It will advise how big a power supply you need. It will also suggest how much surplus to factor in to account for aging and if you plan to run the system 24/7 (like I do).

I am thinking an Intel 5 or an AMD chip ( my understanding is that some AMD's are cheaper and run quite well for what I am doing ). I dont think I need an i-7.
Yep. An i5 should be fine, based on your first paragraph. I'm not familiar with AMD's product line.

I need advice on how to keep it quiet and cool.
Yeah... well, the #1 way to keep it cool is to add fans... which makes it noiser. Keep one thing in mind - bigger fans are better. A larger fan doesn't need to spin as fast as a smaller one to move the same amount of air. This is one reason I picked my case (Antec 900). It has a 22cm diameter fan in the roof of the case. Yes, that's about the size of a DINNER PLATE (almost 9").

Firstly, how is the phrase "more casual friendly" consistent with "by any objective measure"? "Casual friendly" is a VALUE judgement.

Secondly, I dispute that judgement. I don't see the incarnate trials as being more casual friendly than task forces.

And I call BS on that interpretation. When you get drops from farming, they are created out of nothingness. It's something that did not exist before. When you grab a name, you're taking an existing and limited resource. If you farm and get a purple, it doesn't stop anyone else from getting purples. When you camp a name, no one else can have it.

Again, as I stated, I don't have a problem with the behavior. My only problem is with characterizing it as a 'community service'.
  21. Once upon a time, when the final healing badge was for ONE BILLION points healed, I had gotten the first 3 badges (and more than half-way to the fourth one) on my scrapper using Aid Other. Now that the healing badge requirements have been reduced (TWICE!), using Aid Other is actually viable - but tedious. At any rate, I got my badges back then so I finished them in the Arena since a billion points was beyond ludicrous.

Regarding the reduction in the badge requirement, the final badge was reduced by a factor of TEN, then AGAIN by a factor of ten. With the stupendous AoE heals anyone can get from the Destiny incarnate slot, the badges shouldn't be too hard to obtain in normal play. Get on a Rikti mothership raid with 47 other people and set the heal to auto-fire.

Mez - Like Snow Globe suggests, I used two Sappers (even con).

Okay, but it should be blatantly obvious that other people *DO* see a difference. Personally, I don't care. I do agree, though, that referring to it as a 'service to the community' is a crock. A service would be handing them out for free. Getting some good names and then deciding to profit from it is just human nature. But don't try to paint it as being altruistic in any way.
