Depends on what you want to solo. Will you be as good as say a rad/sonic? Nope. But can you solo tip missions? Sure. Quite safely in fact. Set up a build to slot damage into dark blast, If you are going to do a solo build you can drop the buffs for other players and just go with dispersion, hover or combat jumping (preferably hover imo) tough/weave, manuevers. slot for ranged defense and hover blast with dark blast. You wont kill quickly, however between the defense and the -acc you are going to be very very safe. Maybe turn off bosses tho. Since they will take you a while solo.

Great. Just great. Now we are going to see a whole bunch of people running around with this build and the devs are gonna freak out and nerf this build. Way to leak the secret of real ultimate power....jeesh!
-
Just my opinion of course, based on playing my kin/elec defender for the last 2 years, but I don't think you really need to build for heavy recharge on a kinetics defender. You are going to be very busy with your primary as is and so you wont be standing around waiting for powers to recharge, between fulcrum shift, transfusion, the siphons, then your own contributions from your secondary you are going to be very active with just the base recharge and the boost you are getting from siphon speed. Personally the route i went with was boosts to accuracy, to hit buff, and defense. You can toss thunderstrikes into your attack powers for both accuracy and defense. Slotting your actual kinetics powers will be difficult as they do not take many sets. Doctored wounds in your transfusion is a must of course but otherwise the siphons will not give you much option for slotting. You dont have to slot heavy in your primary suprisingly which is nice since it'll let you put more slots into your pistol powers. Also when you get your alpha I slotted it with nerve for the all around accuracy boost you are going to get. nothing worse than firing off a transfusion to save the tank and it misses....Nerve Radial will boost both accuracy and defense boosts for any powers you have that takes them. Just a thought.

I'm gonna second Local's recommendation for Ill/Rad. It is incredibly fun both solo and on teams. And now with i19 rolling out you have enough power picks to have one build that is amazing for both. You can have a heavy single target hitter and still not lose effectiveness in a team environment. The investment was quite a bit I'll admit, but totally worth it. I spent similar amounts on toons I never played again because they were one dimensional (BS/SD farmer comes to mind) but invest heavily in your Ill/Rad and you have a toon that is useful in every single possible situation (except maybe farming AE but then again. Thats boring anyway)
-
By far and away my Ill/Rad, Griff Wonder, is my main. But when I have maxed out hero tips for the day or I'm just feeling like something else I'll grab one of a couple other toons (I'm not really into alting much and prefer focusing pretty hard on a few toons)
Light Mender- 50 PB (Triform with a lean towards tanking)
Sugar Shake- 50 Kin/elec/elec Defender (For when I am on a large team that wants to steamroll things)
Max Flatulence (The Marvel of Methane) -43 Dark/Dark/Dark defender (for when I am just feeling silly and want to play with a joke theme toon)
Really tho, there never seems to be a situation that wouldnt be done best by my Ill/Rad. -
Quote:Totally. You need to slot that puppy for damage. The recast on blind is so fast that slotting for hold is kinda pointless. you are reapplying the hold during the chain. slot it for damage and you wont have to worry about the duration cuz it'll be dead. Stick with the Ill/Rad. Take fire as your APP. This morning right before work I had like 20 mins to kill so I logged in to mess with my costume for the umpteenth time this week and saw that the clockwork Paladin spawned in KR. I look at the clock and think...Yeah. I got time. I head to KR and drop that sucker solo like I was walking in the park. Ill/rad is awesome fun. You wanna start your day off right? Go drop a GM. Then everything doesnt seem so bad....(wow thats kinda sad now that I think about it...) Toss in a high recharge build with Rise of the Phoenix available every 30 seconds or so and you can get downright reckless and silly with your playstyle.I keep forgetting about the fire epic pool, I really hate air supp right now I hardly use it, I enjoy using flash up close but I am not liking having to melee, I keep forgetting about it and my blind is costumized for hold not damage sadly, but I am considering making it more for damage.

Despite my undying love of recharge, I ended up going with Cardiac Core on my Ill/Rad. I already have over perma for my PA and most of my powers recharge close to instantly so I thought spiritual wouldnt be that helpful. the end reduction however was amazingly helpful for when I am pursuing my goal of dropping AVs/GMs without popping blue skittles. picked core over radial since i liked the boost to range as well.

It really depends on what powers you know you want for sure. What you can do is download Mids and throw together an i19 build with what powers you know you want, generally what slots you want, and then post it here so we can use that as a starting point to give you advice.

I noticed that my expensive build toons don't really shine as much in a team environment as they do solo as well. Take my Ill/rad, for example. I spent a stupid amount of inf on him to get Perma PA as well as a few other effects that I really wanted and he can handle a GM with ease. But put him on a team with defenders or corruptors and all of a sudden I'm the guy tossing down controls, debuffing with rad, helping with damage etc. Just another member of the team. No more helpful than the SO'd FF defender or the SO'd blaster on the team. This isn't a gripe. It's actually a really good feeling. On teams it doesnt matter nearly as much how uber you are and I start to question why I even cared so much about perma to begin with. I am very grateful for my D3. It reminded me you dont have to do obsessive number crunching in order to enjoy the game. You just need a fun concept and 7 other sleep deprived nerds at 3am.

So I've been working my dark/dark/dark defender up and he is sitting at 42 while I am distracted by the new i19 content. But I've been thinking about it while planning his IO build in mids and I'm starting to think that any IO sets put into him would kinda be overkill. I know, there's no such thing as overkill. But really, every time I get on a team with my D3, its like we just went into easy mode. Tossing out so much to hit debuff that we breeze through the content. My friends have been upping the difficulty when I use him but still we aren't getting any real issues. Now I'm sure I could dump cash into him to make him even better, but at the moment, I'm just using SOs and he has no endurance issues, does his job of debuffing very well, heals respectably, and I never feel like I'm waiting for some all important power to recharge since there are so many options available to do the job. I guess what I'm asking is, is this just D3s that are like this? Have I been dumping inf into min/max IO builds for so long that I forgot you can do a great job with just SOs or common IOs? I'm really starting to rethink the necessity to get expensive IO builds for all of my toons.

Quote:Hello, all.
I have recently changed accounts and had to re-roll my namesake character (Starforce). So, I'm coming here looking for suggestions on what sets might be a good fit for the "new" him.
I currently have him as a Fire/Rad Corruptor; and I enjoy everything about that combo except for the glaring lack of mez prot. Plus, I prefer defense builds...and it will be hard to softcap a Fire/Cor without taking Scorpian's pool and still keeping all the powers I want.
Short version: I am looking for an end-game character with sets that fit the name Starforce. I am looking for a PvE character and build; but also one that could PvP at least acceptably. I prefer mez protection if possible, and have burnt myself out on playing Fire/Kins for a bit.
So...any thoughts/suggestions?
-Star
.........Peacebringer........
*ducks the bottles and cans thrown his way*
Im serious tho. "Starforce"? Aliens? Lightform? I mean, it fits! If you are going for a concept toon that fits the name Starforce the peacebringer sounds really cool. The different forms are even named after stars! And despite the instant flaming I'm going to get from the l33t crowd here in a minute, they are really fun to play. I will now go back to happily playing my "underpowered" AT and await the hate parade. -
Sapping isn't as effective in my opinion as it seems. With a kin/elec/elec defender you can sap an entire mob very quickly, including the boss using transferance, however they can start plugging away at you as soon as they get even the smallest sliver of endurance back. Without a decent amount of -recovery I cant see sapping to be very viable. Especially compared to something like how a dark/dark defender can neuter a spawn with -acc and keep them that way. Much more easy and effective than sapping.

Quote:Well, holy cow... good call. I retract my previous statement and will resign myself to talking about Ill/Rads....Actually you're looking at the PvP values for Kinetics. In PvE Transfusion has -0.5 regen or a tenth or that provided by Cold or Rad and a twentieth of that provided by Traps. It's a nice bonus but it doesn't drop their regen as much as the other sets.
Dark is somewhere in between. Howling Twilight provides the same -regen as Cold and Rad but unlike the others cannot be made permanent. On the other hand Twilight Grasp gives it a little extra -regen (equal to Transfusion) which is up permanently.
For up time Traps is technically the best since it has 40second duration 90second recharge but since it's an area debuff that has to be reapplied every 10seconds it can have worse uptime against certain AVs (Battle Maiden and the CoP boss come to mind) plus since trappers rarely want to stay in melee range of an AV for to long it requires more effort to apply. -
Quote:Kinetics is only very slightly behind rad, cold, and traps for -regen (something like -0.026 according to red tomax) and has the added benefit of healing the team near the AV. Just thought that it needed to be on that list there. That said Rad, Cold, and Traps are tops for -regen. TA has a nod to the -regen also.
*EDIT* totally sorry for the double post. I'm at work and have been pulling 13 hours shifts lately so spaced that i answered twice, lol. -
I think kinetics is good for it. If we are talking -regen for AVs transfusion is up very quickly, is -4.974 regen as opposed to benumb's -5 regen. Transfusion also heals the melee folks near the AV and Kinetics can SB the team as well as boost the damage of the team in order speed up the AV stomping even further.

Quote:How can you not love the backhanded pimp slap of doom??? Greatest animation evar! Keep working on your Ill/Rad. When you get enough recharge and an APP you are going to have a great attack chain going while your PA and Phantasm wail on the enemy. I went with Fire APP and Blind>spec wounds>fireblast>fireball with a decent amount of recharge tossed into your build (which should be the goal of an ill/rad anyway imo) will be a constant stream of single target damage with a touch of targeted AoE at the end for flavor. All while your pets contribute to the pain. Coupled with Rad infection and enervating field for increased damage and more consistant hits your damage will be more than satisfactory.I actually have an ill/rad at level 30 he is getting more fun my only issue with him is not enough blasting and spectral wounds is probably one of the most unappealing looking powers ive ever seen, cant wait for animation changes, I love the set in the end though.

For AoE I totally agree with Firespray on Fire/MM. But personally I really enjoyed Archery/NRG. Its innately accurate, has a quick recharging crashless nuke in Rain of Arrows, good aoe and great single target damage. Plus with boost range your sniper attack can hit things you cant even see yet. Thats what I call range. You can hit things through a spotter for Pete's sake! But its great on endurance, damage, accuracy, a fun nuke you use often without consequence, not much to dislike there if you dig on range.
-
Ill/rads do plenty of damage imho. I mean, if we didnt, then how do we solo GMs so easy? Gotta pump out plenty of damage (even with rad's -res and -regen) I say forget corruptor and stick with Ill/Rad.
-
I gotta go with Spider. I had to make hard choices on my Huntsman spider build in order maintain team buffs and personal damage ability. Now I have both. But yeah /SR has gotta be tops lol.
-
sadly cant mail merits from one toon to another. But doing the morality missions to get the IOs you need when you are new is dead on perfect advice. It's rough when you first start out and this new system of merits has really helped. Especially seeing as how the markets current prices are a little crazy right now for people who dont have billions saved up.

Quote:Yeah, take out invisibility. With SS+Celerity you already have enough stealth for PVE. I saw your new build and had a few more thoughts (thanks for being so receptive to suggestions btwHaven't been ignoring your post Btw, just reading it over and reanalyzing my build. I take alot of time on these things, and I think I only have 2-3 days till the next freespec.
You mentioned taking out stealth. Just wondering, did you recommend taking out invisibility as well? I originally intended both powers to be useful for stealthing missions, but if SS+Celerity is good enough to stealth most missions... didn't think either power would be necessary at that point.)
grant invis doesnt need 3 slots (unless you are slotting for defense boost? its cheap endurance wise and recharges fast) in your superspeed you can drop the non stealth celerity IOs since they dont help you any. the set bonus from celerity is pretty lame 2.2% immobilize durations which you dont do much of and 1.5% health increase which is minimal. so keep the stealth proc in celerity but save yourself 2 slots in superspeed by taking out the other 2 celerity IOs.
Aim is underslotted, Aim is very useful for a kinetics defender since you need to hit for your powers to work. So you could take 2 slots from your grant invis and 2 slots from your superspeed and put those into aim giving you 5 slots in aim. With that you could take 5 slots of Adjusted Targeting (pretty cheap last time i checked) for a 9% global accuracy boostand 5% moar recharge.
also you have 3 slots in assault. You can't really slot assault very well so just keeping one slot and putting in a end reduction IO is fine, you can them move those slots over to your tactics instead for either a set bonus or just to hit buffs. If you can get another 2 slots somewhere you can pull the adjusted targeting trick for more accuracy and moar recharge. personally i think you should move shocking bolt up sooner in your build as you will get more use out of it than you will power sink. Since an energy build isnt prime for sapping you wont be running power sink in a sapping chain like a kin/elec/elec would so you can move that power later. the shocking bolt slotted for accuracy and hold will help with problem mobs like malta sappers and such.
That's all I can think of at the moment. I hope you are having fun on your Kin. Its a great defender set to play. -
One thought is if you can fit 2 more slots into deceive you can put 5 coercive persuasions into it and get a 10% boost to your recharge. you could get those slots by taking 2 slots out of flash and put them in deceive, then take the lockdowns out of flash and put in 4 basilisk's gaze IOs instead which would give another 7.5% recharge bonus and you wouldnt lose effectiveness. replace the thunderstrikes in spectral wounds with decimations for another 6.25% recharge and a chance for build up proc. take the 2 recharge IOs out of sup invis since it's totally unncessary given the global recharge you are going to gain. You only need 4 expedient reinforcements in PA and can slot 2 recharge IOs for the rest of the slots since the recharge bonus for Exped Reinf is at 4 slots. If you can find 2 more slots you can add 2 to spectral terror and put in unspeakable terror for another 5% recharge. maybe from one of the knockback powers possibly as they will be used less (dependant on playstyle) Instead of gift of the ancients, consider 5 slotting defense powers with red fortune instead, giving you a recharge bonus as well as damage buff.
these are just what come to mind at first. I'm at work and so dont have mids to make a proper adjust. Otherwise looks nice

I'm thinking mastermind made in Praetoria once he gets Going Rogue and taken blue at 20. Never has to deal with the villain stuff, he can get the ranged dps he likes from Bots or Mercs or Thugs, and the jack of all trades thing from the secondary. Like traps, or dark, or storm.
Bots/Traps is a very fun toon to play, as well as Thug/dark.
