I agree. In general "Build up - AS - Placate - crit-kill a minion -then scrap it out" is my group play style. My two main stalkers are dark and spines. Midnight's grasp and impale can both kill a +1 minion after placate nearly always, especially with buildup running when I can get a +2 reliably.
Dropping two enemies right off the bat, especially if one is high priority like a sapper or something, is a big help.
And the team never complains about me running away, because I don't. =) -
I hate to be the one to break the news, but you can't slot purple sets until you are fully level 50. I dunno why the mechanic is different for them than other level 50 sets, but it is.
-
Quote:Not true. Both Touch of Death and Smashing Haymaker also give S/L defense. They give less than Kinetic Combat (about half) but KC is NOT the only S/L set out there. Its only four-slotted. The idea is that the Ice/Shield is S/L rather than positional (like melee) and Kinetic Combat is the only melee set that gives you S/L defense to add to it. The more chances you have of slotting it the better.
Personally, I like to slot Smashing Haymakers while levelling because they are so plentiful and cheap that I don't have the temptation to respec just to pull them out and sell. I can slot over them freely. If you buy them crafted you might not feel that way, but rolling them on your AE tickets, or buying the recipes is really affordable.
Touch of Death is almost always a bad idea, only worth it if you specifically need the extra accuracy and damage it outputs, since you're spending 6 slots instead of 4 and getting only half as much defense out of the extra investment. Usually you're better off going KC and two from another set with good Accuracy pieces and/or a decent proc if you're already over 95% damage enhancement. -
We need a little more from you in order to help you out.
First, will you be starting the axe/fire at 1, or is that the one that is almost 50?
What will you be doing with it? Solo content, team missions & task forces, PvP, soloing AVs, farming? Each of these will have a different build.
What level will you be playing it? Only at 50? Will you exemplar down for task forces? Will you hang out in the PvP zones or Arenas? This will change what powers and what order those powers are taken.
What is your budget? From least expensive to most expensive:
frankenslotted IOs -> SOs only -> Affordable Set IOs -> Sets including top tier and Purples -> Anything goes including PvP IOs
And welcome to the game!
If you don't know already, SO = Single-Origin Enhancement, IO = Invention Origin Enhancement.
And take a look at Paragon Wiki, it has a ton of info you'll appreciate!

I think this bit is interesting:
Quote:Emphasis mine.the Incarnate Abilities are exclusive to characters who have "peaked" from a powers perspective at level 50.
Begin baseless speculation:
Now, as I've been lead to understand the incarnates system is sort of looking like new epic pools. In other words more powers and slots. But I dunno if that's just people talking or if that's accurate (at this stage I think no one does though it might be possible to disprove if a Dev formally shot the idea down somewhere).
Adding a new defense toggle to a squishy is competitive with adding set bonuses via IOs in terms of the end result. Do I think it will be this simple? No. I'm guessing the are not going to make it easier for us to add more set bonuses AND more powers with the same scaling that goes on from levels 1-50.
I'm assuming it will be different somehow. But that said, adding a new toggle would allow two ways to get to the softcap: powers and set bonuses.
End baseless speculation. -
Quote:The key thing is that you only get the set bonus for pieces in that specific power, not in all powers. Also, the proc is not unique so you could put it into your attack, and a second one in taunt to get the full 6-piece bonus from the set. I'm not recommending you do this or do not do this, just saying it is possible.I just purchased the complete set of Perfect Zingers which has its' own damage proc. I'm new to the use of IO sets so I've got what may be a daft question for the veterans who've been using them for a long time. I bought the set for its' 10% regeneration bonus but I also want to use the damage proc (Chance for Psionic Damage) it a fast cycling attack power. Can I place the damage proc in an attack like that and the rest of the 5 set IO enhancements in Taunt and still get the 10% regeneration bonus?
Thanks for your help. -
So, I'm looking to edge up my performance by tuning down my graphics settings since I can't tune up my graphics card. What settings are the biggest performance hogs?
I've done some experiments, but while I'm able to completely gut my visuals, I haven't been able to figure out what works best for improving the (edited) Performance.
24" 2007 iMac, 4 meg Ram, crappy ATI,RadeonHD2600
MY desktop natively runs in 1920 x 1200 so that's where I have the game set also. I get fidgetty when I can't alt-tab out of the game. -
Since people are talking builds and not chains, real fast a few questions:
What are the top three fire blast chains? I know there's a huge difference between the recharge needed and that Umbral posts agreat summary. BUt I can't find it anywhere.
If I'm running Incinerate-Scorch-Cremate-Scorch on a fire-melee toon, what is the next step up in damage/recharge? How does it differ on a brute (with gloom) from a Scrapper/tank?
With Electric Melee (not on a stalker) What is the best st chain, and again would a brute do it differently because of gloom? -
To back up what Ketch says, there have been several tests on carrion creepers as well and the enhancement slotting follows the same rules as the proccing. Meaning if you put a Posi Acc/Dam into it, the accuracy and the damage offer zero bonus to the single-target vine attacks. NADA. Zip. Zilch. No Lexus for you.
For best results slot it with two Acc/Dam Hami-O's, two Recharge IOs, the Impeded Swiftness proc, and any other 1 selection of your choice.
But no matter how you go with it, I immensely recommend at least one Acc/Dam hami-o. A level 53 if you can afford it, but they are very spendy. -
Quote:vendor trash = Salvo and Far Strike instead of Thunderstrike. Or Cleaving Blow instead of Obliteration. Triage instead of Numina's or Doctored Wounds. There are typically 20 to 40 recipes of most of the trash sets for sale for under 5k scattered among various levels. What do you mean vendor trash? Cheap stuff on the market? Random drops you get? Or is there an actual generic IO vendor?
And yes cheap. I recently bought and crafted a level 24 cleaving blow dam/end for less than 50k total including recipe (509) and salvage (1818 total = 309, 309, 1200) and crafting cost (36,820). That gives me 19.2% dam/19.2% end from character level 21 through 50. Slotting one SO from level 22 through 50, only replaceing it when it expires costs over 240k total, and gives a maximum bonus of 38.3%, an average of 33.3% and sometimes as low as 24% right before it dies. Looks like the Cleaving blow is cheaper, available 1 level sooner, and gives higher bonuses.
But as Siolfir points out, you do gotta blow the time crafting it. I prefer crafting to finding the right store and figuring out the chaos of what icon is the enhancement I want. It takes less time for me to shop and craft than to use a quartermaster.
I do craft random drops I get. But I sell most of them. Generic IO recipes you can buy from any crafting table, you can also spend AE tickets on them. Technically, you can spend merits on them, but please don't. -
Quote:I've never transferred inf between characters. I once used Fulmens to move influence to infamy so I could buy prestige for my base. I still haven't ever used the email thing except to send an IO to a friend and I sent myself one large inspiration to see how it works.I think I'm leveling very slowly...at least for me. I've had characters in the 40s with close to 50 hours of play. That's without powerleveling. However, I'm part of a network and some SGs on Virtue chock full of power gamers who can blitz through content with incredible speed. On Justice, I'm solo and away from that advantage.
I'm also being strictly independent with infamy generation. As you can imagine, I can transfer in a few billion in infamy and buy up everything. But what would be the point, and where would the fun be? I'm attempting to approach this project with none of the advantages of a veteran player who has rich alts, a support network, etc. Obviously, it's not quite the same because I have thousands of hours of in-game experience that no new player would have, but I don't want people to think that a new player couldn't do what I'm doing. I haven't even activated my vet reward bonuses so if I want to respec, I'll have to either buy a respec recipe or do the trial. Same with temp powers and even costume tokens.
But I use AE until level 10 because I don't like the "get no drops until 4, then only salvage until 10" mechanic of real missions. That boost typically gets me 20 million before level 10, and provides me with my first few IOs both at the same time.
Still, I think it might be the time thing. Most of my level 30-ishs have to be getting close to 100 hours on them. I'm horridly inefficient at leveling. I have a level 43 whose been around for over two years and I actually play him "a lot". That's less than 1 level every 2 weeks. Plenty of time for orders to fill. -
Quote:That couldn't be possible and still have it be a dual build. The whole point is to swap around the slots and powers. If you kept the same IOs some/most would be invalid.I wish that dual build allowed the second build to use enhancements from the primary build.
But as a player with sever alt-itis, I definitely understand the desire and sympathize with it. What I found as a solution is to sell IOs to people with dual builds. Money makes the pain go away. -
Quote:Thanks. In that case 5 SO-power enhancements slottable at level 1 are pretty good. Just a shame they're not Acc/Dam since Accuracy is what we need most at that level. That's because they're advertised wrong. They have the stats of a level 20 IO (which is slottable at level 1 instead of 17 like a true level 20 IO), not any kind of DO.
@kheldarn, yes Master was right I was talking about slotting two different ones into the same power. Since they're dual aspect that's the best way to get an apples to apples comparison to DO/SOs: use two slots. -
Looks like he will. already posted the same thing in 4 of them plus the PvP forum
-
Quote:I think the problem is your lack of alt-itis. I have 9 villains under 35 and all of them have more than 90% of their slots filled with IOs. I don't play any single one more than two hours a week and rarely more than once a month. If one gets a great IO they can't use (volley fire drops for a brute) then I craft it and use my base to transfer to my corrupter or dom. And between that and giving them a few weeks for bids to fill before I login next, I've never had any issues.Actually, I had hoped to start them earlier. I have infamy to spend but nothing to buy. I already have two full sets of Touch of Death ready to slot at when Fara hits 37 However, the bulk of the pieces are level 40. Sub level 40 pieces are as rare as hen's teeth, and I've been covering mulitple ranges in an attempt to gather them. I've been unhappy with the lack of robustness with the villain market.
Good to hear about Crowd Control. I'm looking forward to having it slotted up.
I imagine that playing the same character and leveling fast like you do, the villain market might not work well enough. -
This is even true on weapon sets where it causes redraw. I have air sup on my bs/regen and I exemp down to level 14 all the time, and without air sup it would be extremely frustrating.
-
What about poison?
Also, I can say that getting the Achilles heel proc into your tier-1 mercs is nearly a critical goal. Makes a huge difference. -
Quote:Ah, hmm, just tested and it seems you are right. But you can input the powername into chat in brackets like [arachnos soldier.pummel] and have it come up. You can do that for any powerset and power even the ones from enemies.Actually, no, you can't. If you press P (or go to Menu -> Powers), you can not right click on any power you have not picked. For example, a brand new Level 1 character can't right click on their Teir 9 power to get info. All you get is the little hover info, that gives a very, very, very short summary (ex: PBAoE, -ToHit, -Def).
-
Do you end up using Kick much? I'm messing with your build and mine and wondering about how much sooner than tough you took it, and wondering if another power might come in handy there. 'Course that pushes back toughness.
-
Depends on the set. The confuse also packs the highest ranged defense bonus in the game (5%). And some of the procs offer things that are unavailable anywhere else (chance to hold in an AoE immobilize is spectacular, chance to knockdown added to aoe dots, etc).

Quote:If you slot two of them you'd haveAll the enhancements enhance damage/recharge 16.66%
For the Proc part:
Clockwork Efficiency - 10% chance for 0.5 scale Energy Damage
So these will be moderadely useful at the low levels, but not enough that having them is unbalanced against anyone who doesn't
33.3% Dam and 33.3% recharge AND two shots for 10% small damage.
If you were able to slot two level 4 SOs at level 1 you'd at best have
38.33%/38.33%, and +0 SOs are 33.33%.
So these seem to be too powerful for the advertisement as being on par with DOs. They are better than +0 SOs (in the sense of the same total % as a +0 SO with a proc on top).
Edit or did I miss-read and they are giving 8.3%/8.3% for a total of 16.6%? -
Quote:It is available all the time. Open your powers window. Even the greyed out powers you can right click on. It pops up a window with a description, but a second tab has the detailed information. It isn't available in the enhancement slotting screen if you don't have it yet. That is news about the chat thing. I'd never heard of it.
I downloaded Mids but never really messed with it much because it seems very cumbersome and difficult to use. I should sit down and try to figure it out someday. -
What I found is that you get better results slotting your fear for -tohit instead of fear. This way the enemy is attacking you, thus generating fury, but missing, so you're protected. Also, it also protects your team if that matters to you.

BrandX can you post that long form for those of us on Macs?
