Quote:I always suspected the RNG God was chaotic evil.Sometimes I gather the team for a small RNG God prayer and sacrifice a squishy to the RPG God...in hopes that I get a purple drop.
Unfortunately the RNG God needs a serverful of sacrifices...still he is not appeased!
Hmm, maybe we could bribe the devs to accidentally make Freedom's Atlas Park #1 and Virtue's Pocket D both become free-for-all PvP zones (convince the servers they're both using Warburg rules) for about 30 minutes prime time Friday evening. That should be enough sacrificial victims. -
Earth/Ice is much easier than Cold/Earth. Cold is not bad, it's just trickier to play.

Quote:#1, don't open with roots unless you have a wall to hide behind. Especially on teams. So, after the various suggestions here I ended up rolling a Dominator. Given that I solo a lot due to playing at odd times surviving is relevant to me and I have found so far that I have issues with it. Assuming I pause a bit between fights I can usually kill things, but anytime I have more than one Lt. or even sometimes a pack of minions that are yellow, I seem to have great difficulties.
What suggestions are there for increasing survivability at low levels? Power choices, slotting, etc. are all fine options. I'm currently playing Plant/Fire but as I'm sure the character will be lower level for a while (since I haven't leveled to 50 before I'm interested in the dev-made mission arcs more than AE) I'm perfectly fine changing sets to have a better leveling experience.
#2, for bosses solo, stack the hold fast as you can.
#3, as said, confuse as fast as you can -
Quote:I saw some interesting post by Nihili a while back I WISH I'd saved (because I can't find it from searching) on slotting a fire armor's heal with three miracle and three aegis to cap toxic resist (after two stacks) and heal for the max potential. Doesn't one of the /regen click heals give toxic resist? Might be cool to see a stalker tank the hydras in Apex.Yeah that's what I kinda meant, I was just sleepy and tired of her 100th post of weird stuff (like 'omg I have severe end problems on all my stalkers'). Recon quickly outdoes using insps slotted and I only get a steady supply of tier 3 greens when I'm farming +4/x8 on my SS/Fire Brute.
I should've mentioned MoG softcaps you to defense, since it's already more than incarnate cap I did't feel the need. Didn't wanna get too specific about why usually regens cap their res with MoG in the response (Resilience, most get Tough, Brutes wil probably slot MoG for a bit of Res to cap, not that it seems to be a popular set among them).
Didin't know it gave toxic resists tho, although it was always funny to see regens turn on mog and instantly faceplant in the middle of some psi-using mob -
Quote:The one fire/fire/mace top-end build that I am aware of (by Frosticus) was over 400dps before incarnates existed. I've never seen a blaster with those numbers. But am not saying it isn't possible.I haven't run any numbers to compare Fire Doms with Fire Blasters, but it is worth noting that Fire Blast is better on Doms at the high end (shorter activation + more damage), and Embrace of Fire is potentially as good as or better than Build Up + Aim (in terms of over-time benefit, since you have half as much wasted cast time) at sufficient levels of recharge.
Sleet is also a pretty big deal; the more each build sells out to increase damage, the more important that -RES becomes.
I'm not sure the Dominator would win, mind, but at the extreme high end I think it'd be darn close. -
Quote:I have issues with videos on my computer. But This is embarassing, I really did look for it for 20-30 minutes straight. We'll I'll get to borrow the PC again this weekend so will give it another go.Hyperstrikes video tutorial, IIRC, also opens up the accolade menu.
Thanks for the hotkey Aggie! -
Quote:No one can use incarnate abilities as the missions are below level 45. Also many characters are running with less than full set bonuses due to the lower level of the missions. You solo the SSAs?
What level is your toon, how is s/he slotted out (any IOs?), and what Incarnate abilities do you make use of (if any)?
My main toons right now are a level 36 ice troller and a level 30 SJ brute. My brute might be able to solo it, but an ice/storm troller is definitely a team-oriented toon; soloing anything with that character is painful in the extreme.
On my plant/storm controller I pretty much just used confuse, my single-target hold, my aoe immobilize, and air superiority plus the occasional sands of mu. VS the EB at the end, I did ST-hold, AoE-hold, ST-Hold and that was that. He was a pinata until he died. And his two buddies helped me pound him down thanks to seeds of confusion (once the AoE hold wore off anyway). On part 2 since it's level 30 I'll have access to my pet and many more attacks.
My blaster is sonic/energy. I sleep minions, then stack stuns on bosses. I don't think they got off more than 15 or 20 attacks against me the whole arc. Half of those were from the EB at the end and I had three small purples and a medium orange helping me vs him. So came out unscathed and again, he spent 90% of the fight as a pinata unable to act except to stagger around while I pounded him.
My fire/fire dom used about the same strategy as my plant/storm stacking holds.
Will be running my dual pistal/traps corr through both this weekend. But that one is soft-capped to range as low as level 20 so I don't think I'll have any troubles.
those are my main squishies. It wasn't hard and I'm not a strong player by any means. I found one trick that works (holds) and use it over and over and over and over. hehe.
Also, if you find you're having trouble soloing, the villain arc is easier because you can have a boss-level ruin mage on your side for the final battles if you ally with the circle in the first mission. -
Windfall, xpboost and prestige boost did not impress me.
Dual and team inspirations are interesting, but not so much so that I was like ZOMG MUST BUY MOAAARRR!. The few I got free were a fun experiment. I'll probably never get more.
I'll chime in that the rocket board is awesome.
Unslotters I haven't used, all my characters need full respecs and so those aren't as handy for me. Anyone with solid builds might get good use from them.
Enhancement Boosts definitely have potential, BUT you need a lot of them. Even to get haste down to 2 lots instead of three you're looking at using 10.
I haven't had the opportunity to test the signature power or signature summon, but they look cool, but not worth a month's investment.
Beam has been pretty good so far. I know I'll get titan weapons because that's what I wanted out of BS way back on my very first character.
In the end, for me the best bang for the buck I've found were the extra storage items. I got one each of the enhancements, recipe, salvage and two of the auction house expansions. Dear god it is glorious and has totally improved the fun level. I rarely hit salvage full warnings or recipe full, as I am now just above the point where my storage fits my length of playtime available so hitting the market at the end of the session is just in time. and on my farmers the extra enhancement slots really cut down on trips to the crafting table and back.
I don't need to be more powerful, but not having to leave loot behind is very nice. And being able to buy/sell more is awesome. -
I'm with the kitty. On Virtue I've been asked not to bring my stalker to things, but it's quite rare. If you really have that bad a problem, then you're running in the wrong crowd.

Quote:You know, now that lots of people are on SO only builds, I'd love to see a thread like "the results are in" from the scrapper forum for stalkers. Showing the best attack chains for each primary and their damage output. Doing it with IOs and incarnate etc would be much more complex but, the SO-only should be straightforward enough. For attack sets...claws is probably the weakest....as it only does lethal damage and does less damage then most other sets..
but it does attack faster....and thus technicaly slotting it with certain IOs and such can really make it work really well...becasue more attacks means more chance of some IO with a special effect going off.
but again...IOs should not be mandatory..and thus...the set would proibably rank last on a list of best attack sets for stalkers. -
Quote:Sorry man I dun remember any more (see my sig) too many longbow missions and they all blend together after a bit. I know I was flashbacking and it's not one of the first ward missions... I think it was either a nerva arc or one of the 40-45 grandville ones. Haven't done any tips lately so not one of those. What mission is this? Because it's not the hero morality mission I am talking about. In the one I am talking about you free a police officer. The first ambush is Silent Blade. You defeat her and talk to her, then your doppelganger ambushes you. Since posting last time in this thread, I've run this mission again and stood my ground right there next to Silent Blade with my NB/Nin Stalker in Hide. My doppelganger runs right up, hits build up, and then... nothing. Just stands there until I attack.
I know of no game mechanic that can describe what you're seeing there, but I'd love to try it myself. I'm curious what's going on there in whatever mission it is you're talking about.
Maybe I can figure out this weekend when I get another chance to play.
Funky that the dopleganger doesn't attack you. I'd test that but my stalkers are all proper villains. -
Quote:Real fast note of thanks. I tend to be a snarky jerk on "what's the best" threads because people tend to post idiotic questions. You actually told us what you were going to do and what you think is fun so we can answer you. So thanks!Hello folks. Been quite a while since I've played CoH (last time was pre-Going Rogue).
I've got GR now, and have been getting familiar with the game again (and noticing that Praetoria is HARD compared to early Atlas leveling).
I'm looking at a couple different character types to work on leveling up, but my big question right now, is about Dominators.
I'm trying to decide what is a good one, as far as a nice mix of control and damage, something balanced towards both survival and "kill speed". I do a mix of solo and team stuff, but because my hours can be really odd, I end up soloing a decent amount. Thinking of leveling through the Praetoria content as well, since it is new to me.
Any suggestions? I know there have been a few changes to things, so am looking for opinions!
And pretty much the already given mind/fire is probably the best for what you want. Mind/ is famous for being able to solo hard content, including the whole LRSF including all 8 AVs at once. And /fire is the best damage. Mind/ can also be very affordable.
I have found plant/ and earth/ to also be spectacular primaries for both solo and team play. Plant/ matures fast with seeds of confusion so early and earth/ has some of the strongest hard controls out there.
Other than /fire good hard-hitting assault sets include /earth, /ice and /psy.
Those are really the go-to sets and there's not a bad combo among them. -

Quote:Did you have the freespec saved up or were you able to use /respec to access the patron respec?I just got home from work and checked my old toons and found I had a Night Widow at 35 called ManWidow (he's male). I turned diff down to -1/0 no bosses and headed to Rein.
I chose Black Scorpion and went to the missions. All the missions were in the public mall area where there were no foes hanging around. In the missions all foes were 35! Bloody Malta slowed me down.
The final couple of missions were in StM and I found Dr Quatrexin was a 35 eb. I finished him off then did a freespec and found I could choose my epic pool.
Yeah could not move on to the 2nd part of the arc so I assume that is lvl 40 as normal. -
Quote:I'm not sure what your question is. You can view which missions are part of an arc by looking for the book icon in your contact tab near the contact person.how do i view them, can someone explain it to me,i dont see how i can view it in game
You can view the text of your mission in the window when you talk to the contact. Also keep an eye on your clues tab as many bits of the story appear there along with a running summary of what you have already accomplished.
If you meant something else, be a bit more specific and we can help you. -
What I've been seeing is that nothing can be taken for granted anymore and it's a good idea to talk more. Lots of returning players with pure SO builds that don't know the limits of what they can and cannot do.
Lots of new players with bad habits from other games who don't understand how buffs beat heals, or how tanks aren't mandatory for most of the missions, or this or that. City is really a different style of game, and people got used to everyone knowing how to run the different task forces and now we have a flood of new players who haven't learned the tricks yet. And they are used to MMOs where you to kill everything on a pass because raids are a pain to organize and yet the only way to get the best exp and loot. City is totally different but they have no idea how many options they have because few other games give so many. So have to talk.
Personally, I've been enjoying it. -
I'll back the votes for Plant Storm. That one works well for me.

Quote:usually those guys alternate oilslick arrow, something to light it on fire, and rain of arrows. I've heard that will drop a +2/x8 spawn in three clicks, including bosses with a second rain of arrows. Never teamed with one to see it though. I tried to make one, but it was pure fail.Actualy mew did get beaten by a defender once....played with this defender who used arrows...arrow/trick arrow.....not sure how but they could pull off the huge arrow attack every 10 seconds or so...that was the only attack they pretty much used....they didnt really need a team.....
The player who played that defender actualy asked the team if we wanted them to power level us.
Mew was very impressed....never met that player again nor ever met a character that could do what that defender did.
I did once team with a blapper who had provoke and out-tanked my tank on the Kahn taskforce. Survived spawns that slaughtered me, held aggro better, and did blaster level damage. That was also embarrassing.
IOs let you make really weird builds these days. -
Quote:Don't take sting, get Gambler's Cut. Sting sucks gambler's is awesome. And yes, put a heel proc in gambler. not in Dragonfly. Damage procs in dragonfly.Anyway, what I'm thinking of, is replacing the last IO in Sting of the Wasp, Flashing Steel and maybe Golden Dragonfly for an Achilles Heel: Chance for -Res Debuff.
Quote:I'm also looking at Divine Avalanche and thinking if a full Mako's Bite set in that is a bit excessive and if I should get a Defense set frankenslotted into it. Do note the Steadfast Protection +Def slotted in Kuji-In Sha. I like that bit of stunt-slotting myself.
Quote:Finally, I got a few power picks that I don't care much for. Smoke Flash in particular. But what else is there to get if it's one power from a power pool that works good with no additional slots? (Or at least can leech a slot or to from elsewhere without hurting anything.) The only thing I can think of is Hasten, but... glowing hands breaks the concept.
Quote:Anyway, got any insights? As I said, I've been toying with this for a few weeks now, and I'm at a stalemate with myself over it.
Caltrops doesn't benefit as much from +dam as from procs. And slow makes a huge difference. Try one level 43 slow/end/rech, the slow damage proc and the posi damage proc. If you can get it ragnarok's chance for knockdown is both hilarious and awesome in caltrops.
The red fortunes in danger sense aren't really helping you. Either push it to 6 slots (one from placate one from stamina) or swap to 4x gambler, or pull some for elsewhere.
Stamina, go with two pieces from perfection: the end mod and the proc. The proc is minimally better than one endmod. And use the set bonus to get a free move speed buff. If you want a third slot go with generic endmod. At four slots, going with perf is again better than commons (proc, end mod, end/acc, end/rech). You could also move one slot over to physical perfection and get a second move boost.
On your build, I'd recommend the numina unique over the miracle in health. It's a miniscule difference, but that's how I'd go. the higher your defence the more regen will help you recover between hits. In theory. -
Quote:I get most of mine from AE ticket rolls. I think I have 18 or so kinetic combat acc/dams banked. I should probably sell some of those hehe. There's a few pieces here and there that you're right, are much less likely to turn up and that if the person isn't doing TFs or story arcs or TFs they won't get via rolls or straight purchases.Well, I can think of a couple of reasons. Some of those sets (like Kinetic Combat) are quite expensive, so if people aren't doing many tips or TFs while leveling (and aren't playing the market) then they may need the vastly higher earning power of a level 50 character to afford them. Also, they may not want to invest that much inf in a character until they're sure they are going to stick with him/her.
And of course, if they level up in AE it may take a lot longer to fill the bids on the IOs than it does to get to 50...
But in my experience the people who say they wait to 50 to IO, also say they have the money for the build. They just don't use it before then. Some snobbery about level 50 IOs vs lower level IOs is also usually given as a reason. then they post a build with the IOs I mentioned. -
Quote:You know, I'm not 100% sure, but I think that trying to hold aggro might be grounds for revoking your membership in the stalker club. You're supposed to be using placate to get the mob to attack your squishy "companions" so that you can AS them again and again when they're not paying attention to you.My Stalkers all already take Provoke (for using after they use Assassin's Strike), and would looove to have a Taunt aura. What is the point of having soft capped defense and/or large resists if I'm merely going to shed my aggro to an unshielded corruptor?
So, Provoke it is. A taunt aura would be handy as an option.
Plus it's funny. -
visit the facemaker and have her give you one of the smiling faces. Or change you to a catboi. Either one should work.
Just don't ask where she got the raw materials for the smiling face or you might stop smiling. depending on how squeamish you are. -
Quote:Random is random. his windfall did not effect you in any way shape or form. Unfortunately the human brain is possibly the most powerful pattern detection device on earth. So powerful that we find patterns where none exist. Especially on very small data sets (like your "set" of one datum).I'm curious about how they work as well. I was on a team with a guy who used one (just me and 2 others) and i got a purple within 10 minutes of him using windfall, and he got one 5 minutes later. In this group he was high level and i was tagging along so he was doing most of the killing.
It's as if HIS using of windfall effected my outcome by virtue of it passing through his kills somehow.
Also, for drops, it has never mattered who did the killing. Probably never will. -
Quote:Here's the short version. If you want to stay with the exemp target of 25 here is a cheatsheat of the best slotting:Gavin, first off, would like to thank you for the elaborate detailed explanation of what would happen exemplared to 25. That being said, I have to warn you, I'm not a huge numbers guy and my head nearly exploded trying to wrap my brain around all of that.
So I "think" the best solution for me in order to keep my concept in tact with creating an exemplar build with little loss in power is to just move my exemplar target level from 25 to 30.
If I slot lv 33 IOs and boost them up, they will actually be better than lv 50 non boosted IOs, and I can keep the set bonuses as low as lv 30. And I wont suffer much enhancement scaling from 31 (where scaling begins) to exemplared 30 it seems.
Oddly enough, most of the quirky set bonus mechanics I knew about, like being able to keep set bonuses even in powers taken in the 40s when exemplared far below that as long as the set IOs were within the 3 level rule. I just phrased things poorly, and mashed together things that technically aren't set bonuses into the same thought, such as procs, etc.
Thanks again.
Part of a set you want bonuses from:
Single IO: Use level 28s
Dual: Use level 24 unboosted
Triple: Use level 28+++
Quad: Use 28+++++
Frankenslotting for numbers without set bonuses:
Single IO: Use level 50 (don't bother boosting because of the large bonus rule)
Dual: Use level 24 unboosted
Triple: Use Level 43 unboosted
Quad: Use level 50+
Purples:
Single: unboosted
All others: boost+++++
PvP IOs would follow frankenslotting rules, but pretty much only level 50s are available so follow purple rules instead just to make life easy.
I'll do a no math cheatsheet like this for level 30 tomorrow. I just got off work and my brain isn't functional. But I am 90% sure that your plan for 33s boosted 5 times is a solid one.
And thanks for getting me off my lazy bum to figure this out. Usually I just wing it and end up screwing my builds over big time. -
I don't see any reason to change the name. A wishlist is a wishlist, not a gift list.
