Actually, the subscription isn't costing you anything. Subscription is 14.95/month. They give you 400 points (5.00) and a free server transfer (9.95) every month. 5.00 + 9.95 = 14.95.

And that assumes you are using the monthly subscription plan. If you use any other plan, they are actually paying you to stay subscribed.

The title of this thread is, "I'm sorry, but I say no." If you say, "no" then that's fine. Say "No", and move on. What this thread is really about is, "I want to say No, but your marketing makes it so hard, so I am gonna complain about how effectively you tempt me to spend more money."

In the case of "side switching", that is a specific feature of "Going Rogue", so in the case of those who buy (or have bought) "Going Rogue", they have already purchased access to that feature. If someone hasn't purchased Going Rogue, and they don't before Freedom is released, they will still be "Premium" but will have to pay for access to the Side Switching feature.

They will grab trial accounts ON the 17th (as many as they can) since those accounts will be usable for the full duration giving them the maximum amount of time in game to spam you.

From a marketing standpoint, Free Trial programs are a good way to draw new players into a game, so it wouldn't make sense to suspend them until the last possible minute. This leads me to believe that Freedom will be launching September 1st, or very very close to that date. September 1st happens to fall on a Thursday which is typically not a good day for a major launch, being too close to the weekend. Best educated guess then is either the 31st of August (a Wednesday, which is the same day of the week that Going Rogue launched) or some time early the following week.

What I would retain, doesn't matter a fig to me, If I unsubscribe, I don't play.

But now my sub doesn't cover powersets any more, which is BS, since my sub hasn't reduced in price.
Your original post cited losing existing Archetypes and Powersets. If you subscribe, then you will have access to all your characters, all of the current ATs (they haven't announced any new ATs, but who knows what the future holds), and all of the current powersets. The only confirmed "premium" powersets are Beam Rifles and Street Justice. As an example that not all future powersets will be "premimum", the new Time Manipulation set is not going to be "premium" but will require a subscription.

And truth be known, I would not be surprised if the Beam Rifle and Street Justice sets don't eventually either make their way into the Paragon Rewards tree or just be flat out free to subscribers. After all, when City of Villains was released, I paid for it as a separate purchase. Now everyone gets it for free. Last year, when Going Rogue came out, I paid for that as an expansion. When Freedom comes out, all subscribers are gonna that for free as well. It therefore, would not surprise me to see the same thing occur with Premium sets.
  6. Bottom line, you are looking at the question backwards. Instead of asking what you will lose if you stop subscribing, you need to look at what you will GET if you let your subscription lapse.

Right now, if you let your subscription lapse, you get....umm... gimme a moment here... I know I have the answer here somewhere.... let me see.... oh yeah! You get nothing. Nada! Zilch! Except an email saying how they hope you will return at some point, and occasional reminder email saying they would love to have you back as a subscriber and telling you about some of the new features.

Even if they limited you to a single character slot, forced you to play on an assigned server (rotated to ensure an even distribution of players across all servers), and didn't let you play more than 3 hours a week, that would STILL be more than what you get right now.

The truth of the matter is, they are giving you much better than what I describe. Exactly how much is determined, in part, by how long you subscribed, and in part by what boosters and expansions you purchased.

Your argument is like having someone give you a brand new car, and you complain cause it's not a Lexus like the people who PAY for a Lexus get to drive.

It sounds to me like you heard CoH was going to have a Free-Play option and you decided right then and there that you would stop paying, and now you are disappointed that if you do, you won't get some of the things you want.

Okay. You are more than likely okay. In any event, once you see the difference with a direct fiber optic connection vs copper wiring from a POTS line and local cable television, you won't WANT to switch back... ever.

As for my plan, I am actually on a 20/5 plan. The plan I am on isn't even offered anymore. If I go to the services website to look at/change my plan, it auto selects the 20/20 (for about 10 bucks more than I am currently paying).

In most cases, 5Mbps is more than sufficient. In my case, the audio stream is using a constant 128kbps. The hits for the database server are sporadic.

Another thing to consider with FIOS vs most other high speed internet connections is that your available bandwidth is MUCH more consistent. Cable companies typically like to use language like "up to" when they talk speed. That's because if your neighbor is using a lot of bandwidth, it has a direct impact on you. This is not true with FIOS. Your connection is yours all the way to fiber network switch, not shared. They will still use the same "up to" language, but it's more so that they can reserve the right to throttle traffic during high traffic times. If they have ever done it in the 4 or 5 years I have used FIOs, I never even noticed. This is NOT true of the time I spent on a cable modem. Noticeable drops in performance were a normal occurrence.

I think you'll be happy with what you see from FIOS, and yes, if I am wrong, you can even blame me.
  12. I gotta admit, the extra enhancement trays are looking mighty tempting. The price may be slightly high, but considering that there is no other way to increase enhancement storage, and it is a universal, one-time, purchase.... maybe.

We know a definite move date now so I was about to purchase their Triple Play package and saw that their FiOS service comes in different speed packages. I didn't know this existed before. So, I come to the community again for assistance. For those that have or are knowledgeable about FiOS, what speed package is most desirable for online gaming?

    Thanks in advance!
I have been a FIOS subscriber ever since the moment it was available in my area. I have loved every moment of it. I run a small internet radio station, so whether gaming or not, I constantly have bandwidth being used to stream the broadcast. Additionally, part of the website for the station accesses a database server here as well in order to power an automated request system. All of this is done via my FIOS connection with no issues whatsoever.

I have had one case of an outage following a thunderstorm, but it was resolved quickly. The ability to diagnose a problem in a fiber optic line is INFINITELY better than the ability to diagnose a problem in a copper line. Even if there is a physical break in the fiber optic cable, they can tell via GPS within about 1 meter exactly where the break is.

This being said, there are a couple of things you may want to be aware of. If this is a house that you are having constructed, and you order FIOS as your initial installation, they may or may not run the copper lines at all. This means, if you decide later, that you don't want FIOS, you may have to pay to have copper installed in order to get phone/internet/television service. Additionally, in SOME areas when FIOS was first introduced, it was common practice when they did the installation to actually pull the copper lines away from the house. Again, this means if you switch back, you have to pay to have new copper lines run. I am fairly certain that they stopped doing this after a few negative news stories came out, but I am not positive.

My bank manager cut it up with scissors, which to me was a novel experience. The point, though, is that now I have to swap to my new card before my bill date is due (which is still a while away, luckily), and I don't seen an option to do this on my PlayNC account. The only way I can think of to do this is to cancel my account billing, then restart it and enter the new card's details, instead.

Here's the kicker, though - won't this somehow interfere with the Paragon Points we're already accumulating towards Freedom? I remember a few people got burned with the Vanguard Pack promotion that required uninterrupted subscription for a few months when they had to swap payment methods or had their cards expire and such, and I was wondering if that won't be a problem when I go about cancelling and resubscribing. I wonder, furthermore, if there isn't some kind of "Swap Card" or "Add Card" option in my game account management that I'm not seeing. I know PayPal have that, but I'm sure they use a different infrastructure.

Basically, thread: Will swapping payment methods interfere with my Paragon Points acquisition and is there a better way to do this than cancelling?
I wouldn't expect this to matter in regards to the Paragon Points. The Paragon Points don't require "uninterrupted" subscription. As I understand it, the current promotion that is letting subscribers accrue Paragon Points pre-launch gives everyone points on the first of the month, provided their subscription is active. Once those points are credited to your account, they are yours.

  18. Before I get into this, let me state something very clearly. First, I do not think Freedom, or the players it will hopefully bring are a bad thing. I posted quite some time ago pondering the question of whether this may be something that we'd be seeing. Furthermore, I like most of what I have seen about how this is all being implemented.

I do however, wonder if the timing may be off given the current state of the player-base. In most MMOs where there are two or more factions, the players are, at least somewhat, evenly distributed between the two sides. In CoH, this is far from true. The discrepancy between the two sides is quite large.

Why is this a problem? Because first impressions are going to go a very long way in determining whether or not a new free player will turn into a VIP subscriber. Let's take our new player, who will name John. John logs into the tutorial, goes through and chooses to become a Villain. He exits into the Rogue Isles and sees one of two things:
    1. A mostly deserted zone where he feels like he's playing a single player RPG.
    2. A reasonable number of players, but most of whom are new, like him, and therefore can't form a team.

In the second case, some of the players may be tempted to subscribe so they can form a team. Others will simply walk away with a bad first impression of the game.

In the first case, a much larger number of players will simply walk away without even considering the possibility of subscribing.

Some small percentage may decide to see if things are any different on the hero side, but a large number will simply assume that things are just as deserted there.

It seems to me that it would have made sense to try to look at why there is such a discrepancy between the number of players on the two sides, and sit down with the community and try to address them to encourage a more even player distribution.

Easier said than done. They are likely storing the amount of inf in a long integer. The largest number that can be stored in a signed long integer is 2,147,483,647. They round this down to 2 billion to keep it simple. Can you imagine the out roar if people had to remember they were approaching their cap when they got near 2,147,483,647? Besides which, as a safety measure you don't want people to actually be able get to the "real" cap anyway, because if there is an error, it can lead to all sorts of problems. To a computer 2,147,483,647 + 1 equals NEGATIVE 2,147,483,647.

Besides which, raising the inf cap is a bit like congress raising the debt limit--it's a temporary fix at best, and next year, we will be right back here having the same discussion asking why the cap is only 4 Billion.

It's common for the servers to show "Up" before you can actually access them. The login server (which is separate from the game servers) is not shown, so even if the game servers are up, if the login server isn't. you can't login. The login server is typically the last one they bring up. This allows them to run quick in-house tests to make sure they are ready.

Currently though, it looks like there may be an issue with the server status page itself. If you notice, the last time the status was updated was June 24th.
  24. A lot of players, myself included, express that we find repetitive grinding of the same content to be boring and undesirable. However, let's take a look at few facts of how a large segment of the community have chosen to utilize the existing game content and other systems.

First there were mission farms. We would find some mission that offered good XP or good salvage drops and put together teams to farm it repeatedly, never actually completing the mission objective, specifically so we could farm it again. For example, the Battle Maiden farm.

Then we got Newspaper Missions on the Villains side, and subsequently Radio Missions on the Hero side. Many players then ignored any contact missions that didn't offer some specific reward they were seeking and instead went from level 5-10ish nearly all the way to 50 with just the Newspaper/Radio missions. Missions, which are essentially all the same.

Then we got the ability to be as creative as we liked and create our own stories with the Mission Architect system. A large segment of the community used the system to create farming missions which didn't even try to pretend to actually have any story behind them.

Now it is easy for any of us to come up with anecdotal evidence saying, "Hey! I never did any of that stuff!" I could even, honestly, make that statement myself. However, take a look around, we are in the minority on that. Even if 100 people reply to this and say I am wrong, it would still be a vocal minority and not representative of the community as a whole. The developers, however, have access to statistical data that we do not. They see exactly what the majority of the players to spend their time doing while playing the game.

Yes, we can say that we hate grinding repetitive content until we are blue in the face, and it won't change one simple fact...actions speak louder than words. We, as a community, have acted, and the developers have heard us loud and clear.

While I can see the issue here, I think you may be looking at it backwards. Right now, there are 3 powers that you don't have. You will get those three powers with 1 slot each. That's 1 more slot than you currently have in them.
Even if you don't slot them, you are still ahead of where you are right now, so your build will not be any worse off than it currently is, and will in fact, be better off.
