Am I unable to play with Verizon?
I have a pretty high end computer: Radeon HD 6870 graphics card, AMD x4 3.6ghz processor, 6G of DDR3 RAM, 64-bit windows 7, ect... So I know its not my computer.
However I have a Verizon Unlimited data package and I am using my Droid Incredible as an internet tether. I ran speed test and have 104ping, 1.23mbps down and .76mbps up. I just reactivated my account after many years, downloaded and patched everything, but when I get to the login screen and put in my account info it delays for awhile and then gives me an error message that says "unable to connect, could be due to local network or firewall block...ect" I have turn off all firewalls and protection, but it still does the same thing. Is there a work around? |

This morning COH is down for maintenance until 12 or so. I guess you've tried previously to login (like yesterday) and gotten the error?
Verizon shouldn't be the problem. However, the game is using a new installer/updater since you left. Are you still using the old loader?
Today a few minutes ago is when I first tried. I thought that the maintenance was over since I can now log into my NCsoft account. Hopefully this is just due to the maintenance, but does everyone else recieve this error?
City of Heroes Legacy Updater no longer in use from August 4
As of Thursday, 4 August 2011, the City of Heroes launcher will no longer be supported. After this date players will only be able to launch the game through the NCsoft Launcher, or through the Steam platform. If you havent already, now would be a great time to download the NCsoft Launcher! On average, players will experience faster downloads and increased usability with the NCsoft Launcher over the City of Heroes launcher. In addition, youll also receive the exclusive Wisps aura in-game for downloading and using the NCsoft launcher!
If you have any questions regarding the NCsoft Launcher, our F.A.Q. is available here.
If you cant find an answer to your question , please dont hesitate to use our Support page or our Issues & Bugs forums.

Yes everyone gets that while maintenance is in progress - and the server status page is broken, so you can't tell from that either.
Oh, and WELCOME BACK to CoX ?
Just saw your question, I am using the NCSoft installer(I saw that the other one is going to be removed soon).

I thought about trying this for when I am away visiting family with no net. I was afraid that there would be a hidden charge though. Could you let me know how you do it and if it works out for you? I have the same service as you, and the original droid.

I have used my droid with verizon to log on the game in the past when my cable was down. It works ok but if you team expect to turn down the graphics settings.
I have the unlimeted data plan also and use a program called pdanet to log my computer onto the net via the droid on verizon wireless.
The first time I tried it I was going to drop cable and save 60 bucks a month but after the 3rd or 4th time runinng into the lag monster I changed my mind and still use cable and maxed graphic settings lol.
good luck to you
It works. I even have all the graphical settings including Ultra Mode (I think) all the way up and playing smoothly.
I use EasyTether and the Droid X from Motorola all the time.
I actually get better gaming because the Droid X tethered gives me 104 Mbps and my home wireless is only 54 Mbps...

I'm not really sure graphics settings impacts required throughput all that much. I play routinely using a MiFi portable hotspot from Verizon. Although I recently upgraded to the 4G model, most of the areas of the country I travel to still don't support 4G so its usually in EVDO 3G mode.
Regardless, lag isn't an issue. Latency on Verizon's EVDO network is actually pretty good and you don't need a lot of speed/bandwidth to play the game. I monitor my usage pretty closely since Verizon doesn't offer the 'unlimited' plan (I'm on a 5gb/month plan) and even with 2 hours of play per day, I barely hit 1Gb usage from that for the month.
I play on both a Mac running lower-resolution modes (due to the insanely buggy Mac client) and an Alienware running the client on Ultra mode. Don't really notice lag in either situation, other than the normal stuff you'll get on a 24-man BAF run or a RWZ raid.
